Title: Listening Devices
Post by: lepetitfromage on 04 Mar 2012, 10:17
I think this is the right place for this. I couldn't find another thread that addressed this that hasn't been deceased for quite some time, but if there is one hiding somewhere feel free to move/delete this one.

I want to buy an iPod docking station for Fiance's birthday. His is ancient and frankly, it sucks. The sound quality is pretty horrid and it doesn't even support the newer iPods. I know in general, you probably won't get superior quality out of these things, but I'd like to find one that we can actually enjoy listening to. I figure there have got to be some audiophiles around here somewhere that can give me some advice. What do you use? Would you recommend it?

The only other issue I'm concerned with is that it needs to be compatible with the 5th generation iPod. Are most/all of these backwards compatible?
I found  this one (http://www.amazon.com/Altec-Lansing-IMT320-inMotion-Compact/dp/B0038W0N8G/ref=sr_1_12?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1330883837&sr=1-12) that seems to be similar to what I'm looking for, but some of the reviews make me question it. I really don't like that it resets to mid volume every time you turn it on. I can see that getting pretty annoying.

Any thoughts you guys have would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

I have a nice surround sound system with an iPod dock. The sound is amazing. My favorite part is having a remote.

Very cool.  :-)

We have a really basic system set up already for the living room that we can plug our iPods into as well but this is gonna be more of a secondary thing- for the kitchen/bedroom/travel.

One day, I'd really love to set up a big, sexy system like the one my dad had when I was growing up. He had a couple Quicksilver tube amps and a pair of gorgeous floor standing speakers that were pushing 5 ft tall. Set up a Squeezebox a while back- that was definitely a handy little contraption. The music that came out of that setup was smooth as silk. Nothing beat sitting in that sweet spot and just letting the rest of the world melt away.

Obviously, I'll never get that kind of quality on my budget.....I just want something that packs a decent punch for the money and doesn't spew constant static into my head. I'm starting to think that Fiance is numb to just how bad the sound quality is with his current iHome and he's got everything else a human being could want, so I figure...upgrading something he already has is a foolproof gift.

This is kind of related. I have a pair of speakers that I love but the jack has got bent. My Da did a bit with it but there's still a little balloon split on one of the joints. He managed to get it to fit my MP3 player and it worked but I don't want to put it in there again for fear of damaging both. The only way I've read to fix this is to cut the wires and basically solder them to a new jack. I'm scared of doing that though. Any advice?
I could try bringing it to somewhere to get it fixed but it'll probably cost as much as getting a new system.

To avoid having to solder, you could get a short jack extension cable, and tape up the joint with the damaged jack.

That's a good idea. Thanks.  :-)
