Despite me not really liking this current pairing, I have to say that Dora is looking absolutely delicious. Would have gone with a black skirt though. In Tai's case? She must have gotten dressed in the dark because that dress is hideous. It looks like a cross between a long john top and some art student's quilt project. *barf*

Dora looks fuckin' awesome.  Been too long since her goth phase.

Not sure what Tai was thinking with any dress, let alone that one.  It looks like she got it from a costume shop.

Not sure what it is but to my eyes Dora looks ridiculous.
High boots with overknees and miniskirt? Diagonally cut top? It looks like four things bought from five stores and put together using a random number generator in the dark while drunk. oO

It. Just. Looks... trampy. *duck and run*

There's a bar where silly outfits are considered very appropriate, especially for defusing any awkwardness they may now be feeling...

As for where they planned to go, though... who knows. Maybe they hadn't planned anything specific yet, and so had different places in mind.

Good lord. You used "defuse" correctly. You didn't say "diffuse". You are the only person left in the world who gets this right.  I swoon. Let me bear your children.

Dora has asked Mieville for fashion advice: maybe this time she listened and that's why the results were so bad.

My guess is they're just beginning to feel their way around with each other.  After all, Dora hasn't been in this kind of relationship in a while and she still (I think) has some hangover issues after the end of her relationship with Marten - along with her other issues and Tai is, I think, beginning to realise that this relationship is totally different than her previous ones and that Dora is a totally different class of lady than the others she has been with.  I think it's kinda cute actually.

But see, Hanners's dress is at least moderately fashionable - it's a light summer dress, and really, the design isn't bad at all, and is something that really doesn't go out of style. Tai's, on the other hand... that's something in a cut and color that I wouldn't be surprised to see my 84-year-old grandmother wear.

Not because of the drawning I hope... Because I did not only find it hilarious but it did make a good point in showing what NOT to do.

For some reason I think if Dora was wearing heeled boots, her outfit would work a lot better. Tai's dress just looks wrong for her to me. It might work on another person. Outfit swap, maybe?  :-P

Although I know bugger all about fashion. I just thought they were "trying too hard" as someone said so I got the fun without the complete, "The hell they wearing?" feeling.

Normally, i am not very sassy when it comes to clothing choice,  but...
Tai needs not only a refund, but a lawsuit for wherever she bought that horrid puce dress from. I mean jeez, that has to be the most unsettling outfit i have seen in this comic. The only time i think a dress like that would be appropriate is if you had oppressive parents/grandparents visiting.  It might look better in a different color, but that one is, just unsettling and horridly date-innappropriate.

I have to agree that they both look like they're trying too hard, but I think things could have worked if they made minor changes-

Dora: take off the tights and add a sleeve.
Tai- shorten the hem and unbutton a few buttons. A different color wouldn't hurt either.

Granted, Tai definitely looks the most out of character. Makes me wonder what reasoning she had for getting extra girlied up if obviously Dora is into her when she's wearing plaid and cutoffs. IMO, we're used to a little bit of gothi-ness from Dora, she just ODed a bit today.

Dora left her goth phase behind her long ago, so it seems a bit bizarre to me that she'd get all gothed up for her date with Tai. Did Tai even know her when she was still Spooky Pants?

I'm in agreeance with the idea that they're both trying too hard, but I don't understand the choice of clothes that either of them has made.

I think something about today's page really tweaked the "contrast" dial in my free association matrix: For some reason, I am reminded of that moment in Queen of Wands when Shannon and Kestrel catch Felix on his way out in drag then, after hasty explanations regarding a total lack of threat to their relationship, the next time we see Felix in drag, Shannon's in drag too, wearing a top hat and tails of all things, and they are going out to paint the town a very confusing shade of red for "teh lulz" as I understand the kids call it these days…

Anyway, that connection spawned the idea that they could totally go out as they are and really play up the "demure doll" and "goth harpy" acts to the max for a laugh, if only their relationship wasn't so new and tentative.

I don't dig the pairing either.  Just seems off and entirely too strange and just because of the girl/girl luvin' (I mean, who doesn't love that other than weird people?).  But that discussion has been done to bits.

But yea.  Dora does look absolutely delicious.  Pulls off the smokin' Goth quite well.

And Tai.  My god.  That grammy dress really is absolutely hideous.  Like why do you own it take it outside and BURN IT hideous.

This makes me sad, dammit! They were such a hilarious couple for awhile that strip was/is my favorite of their time together.

And flames aren't a tramp stamp.  Tramp stamps are those stupid tribal looking things.

Well… there isn't really a fixed definition of a "tramp stamp" but they are consistently depicted as much smaller than Dora's fire lake, and generally conform to an inverted triangular outline, centred over and pointing down between the buttocks, though block text in an arc above the same location is sometimes also considered a tramp stamp, especially if the text says "tramp"…
Equally there is no defined artistic style for the devices, so while simplistic patterns aping the styles of various aboriginal cultures' initiation tattoos are common they are not definitive, as pictorial depictions of such subjects as flora and Lepidoptera are equally frequent.

An actual tramp stamp is smaller, just in the center lower back. Dora's tattoo covers her whole lower back, not just the center, and she mentioned it's also part of a larger piece that's not done yet. Also, Dora's not a fucking TRAMP.

I don't think that anyone is seriously suggesting that Dora is a tramp just because she has some kind of tattoo (or for any other reason). They're just discussing the tattoo (which I'm not really following, because I can't say that the precise definition of "tramp stamp" - an expression of which I only learned thanks to this discussion - is of huge interest to me).

And don't say that was a long time ago.  I think it's only been 3 days worth of QC time.

I'm kinda on the 'my god, what are either of them wearing' side of things.
Me too. Why would Tai especially even have a dress like that? Did her growth stop at thirteen or something? Hilariously bad!

I figure Tai's dress is left over from when she was thirteen, or at least some time in her teenage years. It's probably when she started figuring out who she was and started dressing more "butch". Remember, when we first met Tai, she was still binding her breasts and looked fairly androgynous. She has heard Dora say she's not into butch girls (even if she thinks they're cute), so my guess is this is Tai's attempt to be more feminine.

Dora, on the other hand, has no experience dating another woman. She may be attracted to girls, but any ideas she has about what two women might do on a date are all second hand at best. I get the feeling she took aim at the closest stereotype and let fly.

Or I'm wrong and the last time she was in a relationship with a girl was when she was with the coven and she's going back to what she knows.

Either way, they're so awkward it's cute

'Tis possible that Dora was uncomfortable with Jim and mistook that for discomfort with relationships.

Her insecurities might only apply to relationships with men.

I kind of hope Dora and Tai take it slow, but of course they won't.

Tai, you're not modest at all. You once welcomed Steve and Marten into your apartment while there was a lady in your bed. :P
That said, unless Jeph outdoes himself amazingly, we have our moment of the week right there in the fourth panel.

Couple of things to note:
AnthroPC begging: "Will torrent 4 cash". This has a LOT of potential layers for analysis, but I'll just file it under "intriguing" for now.

It strikes me that Dora and Tai don't know how to behave in front of each other after just being friends for so long. Dora was the one who brought up seeing Tai naked, and ordinarily I think she would have had a much more confident response to Tai's flirting (given that she was ALWAYS going to say "Did you like what you saw?" on that subject). But she didn't.

I consider almost any tattoo just above a girl's butt to be a tramp stamp. A wide, branching, and often roughly triangular tattoo is a subtype of tramp stamp known as 'ass antlers'.

They're each trying for what they think the other wants.

Quoted for absolute truth.

Dora is in her Goth clothing because it's an association with a more relaxed and experimental time in her life. Clothing of that period invokes feelings of the time, ie she's trying to be what she sees Tai as, youthful and experimental. (Try it yourself, put an old work outfit on and see how it makes you feel)

Tai is coming from the opposite extreme, hence the bad dress in an effort to match what she perceives Dora as: maturity, stability and wisdom.

The two dresses expose their extremely different viewpoints at a superficial level (clothing) and on a deeper level (emotional/relationship expectation) simultaneously.

So unless they get down to actually trying to understand each other it's gonna be a train wreck.

I think rather that she's trying for her youth, and reaching a little.  We know she can do a sophisticated, mature version of goth (meeting Henry and Maurice), here she's trying to appeal to someone about 6 - 8 years her junior.

It doesn't really work, IMHO.

re: today's comic -

Dora's question feels a little odd to me.  I mean, I guess it's possible that in came up in conversation, but it just seems too damned heteronormative, to the point of almost being insulting.  It just feels like a question an insensitive straight person would ask, implying that one must necessarily question oneself in order to know they're gay.  I mean, straight people don't have to try a same-gender relationship to know they're straight, ya know?

Now, I do truly understand that Jeph knows this, and I'm sure it's just meant to be a question that naturally happened.  It just doesn't feel that way to me.

Of the lesbian couple I know best (I was "best man" at their ceremony) one had previously been married (and has grown-up children), and the other had been in a heterosexual relationship some years earlier.  These possibilities are certainly not uncommon, and it would seem to me perfectly natural for this to be a question that might get asked, especially by someone who has been there, as Dora has - there is no need to assume that it is judgemental in any way.

Yes, I know that it is entirely common to have had heterosexual relationships, marriages, offspring and the like - I have many several gay friends who have had this same experience.  I also, however, have gay friends who have never had sex with anyone of another gender.  My point is simply that the question sounds somewhat presumptive, that Dora may, in fact be surprised that Tai has not seriously questioned her sexuality.  Just seems a pointed question, one that a person would ask who is less educated on such matters.  Dora, seeming to be an out-and-proud member of the queer community, simply seems to be a questionable source of such a query.

Any question can sound presumptive if the hearer has a particular view.  I try to assume that a question is simply that rather than an implied statement.

This is not to say that questions are not also asked in clearly biased or leading ways - but this is not the case here, as far as I can see.

I wouldn't say her asking the question is odd at all, based on how Dora discovered her sexuality it seems a reasonable question. Note "discovered", whereas Tai just knew. Dora experimented to figure herself out so she just was working off her personal experience. Since Dora moved on to her next question after Tai answered I don't see her being surprised by Tai's answer. Also Dora's phrasing of the question sounds like a response to something Tai said so it looks like it came up naturally rather than was an opening question.
In a lot of circles, exploring sexuality is a new thing, regardless of sexuality and how sure or unsure you are about it. I think Dora was asking more about if Tai explored before she knew, rather than questioned her sexuality. Although that isn't much of a point because of Tai's answer.

1) God those tights are hideous. Dora is in her mid-late twenties and is still wearing ripped thigh-highs?

2) I think the question about whether Tai has dated any guys stems from an understanding of socially-mandated heteronormativity rather than an assumption about Tai's own sexuality. Many queer folk engage in heteronormative pairings before they come out, because society says they should. Furthermore, many people start "dating" before their own sexuality is even developed (anyone here had a boyfriend/girlfriend before grade five? I did). In Dora's experience, perhaps it is rare to meet someone who has always known about - and been totally cool with - their homosexuality, to the point where they never even tried dating someone of the opposite gender.

Ramming it in on the first date when they really don't know each other and one is already in too deep in liking the other?  Yea.  That's definitely a way to go out like a thousand exploding suns.  Faster than just one.  That level of intimate on Tai's account for someone who has wanted it so long could turn her uber clingy.  I think that may be an issue moving forward.  Tai wanting to really try monogamous and getting up in Dora's space too much.

I think to get to parent meeting stage though, we'd need another 500ish strips though.  Don't think it lasts that long.

And I disagree on the metal head sexy time clothes.  Then again, I guess it depends on the metal heads you know.  The hardcore one I know who think that attire is utterly ridiculous.

At any rate, the "get to know you" phase is weird.  Still really feel like they're just really close friends shooting the shit or as another said awhile ago, maybe it is because I can't get beyond the sisterly effect they had, at least on Dora's end, in the beginning.

It would be an inappropriate, Captain Heteronormative conversation if Dora had just randomly blurted out "so you've never been with a guy?" but I get the impression it's a response to something Tai said to which we weren't privy.  It's a comic, not a novel; we don't always get the context.

One of the old regulars, not around so much lately, has argued that Peter and Elssa were neglectful parents, putting their trips (in both senses) ahead of instilling a work ethic in Sven or nurturing self confidence in Dora.

I sort of agree but it's hard to argue that Sven has no work ethic when he's a successful popular songwriter who got all A's in college (no time to link). I think what the Bianchis didn't instill in him was a proper sense of general respect for others, and chivalry (considering what we know of Peter's past, we know he didn't set the best example).

I just went back a few comics and noticed something... What happened to Clinton? (http://questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=2244) ...

It seems that some extended conversation on that topic just got dropped when Tai showed up. But we never see the resolution after... did he just skedaddle when he noticed no one was paying attention to him anymore? This is ghosting me.
I know he says "just in for some coffee" ... but still. He engaged in that bit about his sister and then ... *poof*

Good to see Jeph mess with perspective a little more. Everything is usually left-to-right standard comic conventions, and that gets a little old after a thousand or so strips. I'm glad Jeph is taking gradual steps out of his box. It dispels the convention that he's only still in this to make money off of T-shirts. Artists that want to improve get my respect no matter how lacking their skill is.

Madmartigan: I agree about the sisterly thing. It still feels a bit... incestuous at this point to me.

I know someone who was straight. But then she realized she was a lesbian. She went hardcore with it, too (She chopped off her beautiful hair). Suddenly, she gets a crush on a guy. She was obviously very confused by this. They ended up getting married. They're divorced now, but it just goes to show, nobody has the same experience with their sexuality. You figure it out as you go. My guess was that Dora was responding to something Tai said, not that she assumed that all lesbians have been with guys before. I think Dora is aware enough of how figuring yourself out works that she wouldn't assume that Tai had tried both sides of the fence.

I totally had something else I was going to say but completely forgot as soon as I hit the reply button. >_>

Ah, but are we talking about pants that are baggy, or quoting a parent describing something "<they> don't understaaand!"? Which probably means parachute pants, which are baggy in the sense that stars are large; accurate but not really descriptive enough.

Dora's question feels like the girls were talking about previous relationships, and Tai mentioning she's always had girlfriends, prompting Dora to ask in a tone of "I can't imagine what that's like, and I want to learn more about you."

Without the social issues surrounding sexuality, the feel of it (to me) is more like when I, as an often-injured person, ask "so you've never broken a bone? In your whole life??"
It's just strange and new to me, and so I want to ask about it.

Possibly semi-offtopic, but I need some sort of confirmation on this...

Since the "Tai & Dora" arc started, I've seen a couple fanworks giving Tai the surname of "Hubbert" - but I don't recall seeing her surname stated anywhere in the comic.

Is there something I've missed?

Actually, I think this is so far one of the most successful/least chaotic dates the comic's ever had... it's probably had the fewest things go not according to plan since Dora and Marten's first (http://questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=600) more than 1500 strips ago. So unless Tai makes an amazing faux pas in the next strip as Jim once did...

Tai. Buddy. Guy. Fwiend. You don't have very much to reveal to a heterosexual man. You used to be proud that you could pass as a boy with no effort.

Though that does raise an interesting question; if you were bisexual would you prefer to date men who look very masculine and women who look very feminine, or go for more androgynous people so you meet somewhere in the middle, or just run the gamut? If you are bisexual, feel free to chime in as well! These are the questions science wants to know! I tend to prefer extremes so I'd probably go with the first.

Answer for most I would say is, it varies for person to person.

~ ~

I had to reread Dora's line to get the full, "Buh?" of it. I took it more as Dora saying Tai wouldn't need to worry about meeting her parents but the other option is very there. Tai's angry eating is a great expression. Plus her face in 3B reminds me of the third panel of this (http://questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=2242), we need more characters making that expression.

I would imagine he has a folding table off-panel (http://newyork.classicpartyrentals.com/assets/1386/_MG_7629-copy.jpg?1201895263) to hold the single tray.

Even if he set the tray down on a nearby table, why is he making two trips between the customers and they tray?

Have you ever dropped one of those things before? You'll be carefully carrying trays with both hands for at least a week.

Oh, geez, Dora. Really?

I'm about Tai's shape (though I do have a bubble butt and am average height), so that's something that would honestly hurt my feelings enough that I would think about reconsidering the relationship. Like, "You don't consider me desirable enough for your pervert dad? If you don't think I'm good enough for the dirty old man to stare at, then you obviously don't think much of my figure." She's treating Tai like she's not attracted to her. And that does not bode well. At all.

It's hard for me to tell how much of Tai's reaction in the last panel is just for laughs/cuteness. I'm curious to see what they'll add to that in the next one.

Not that I blame Tai for reacting badly, but this does not actually logically follow. It is very likely that Dora knows that her father's "taste" differs considerably from hers.

I see. I'm tired, and I just got that kind of vibe from the strip for some reason. I think I was so shocked by the fact that she would even say something like that with the emphasis on "you" that it just really, really rubbed me the wrong way. People who say stuff like that are generally trying to put the other person down, and that always bothers me. I know that absolutely wasn't Dora's intention, but the fact that she said something that's generally reserved for crapheads to use really rubbed me the wrong way and threw me off.

If her dad really does like tall girls, I can completely understand her expression and how she said it. And I get that it just came out wrong because she didn't realize the implications. If that's the case. I certainly hope it is, but my first reaction to that panel was one of just disgust, whether it was deserved or not. :/

Perhaps Dora's last girlfriend was more feminine and thus, more her Dad's taste. I think her faux pas may be related to the fact that (as MartenMom put it) Tai's a "tiny butch one".

Of course, there are more eloquent ways of explaining this to Tai, but.....where's the humor in that? Let's just hope Dora can clear things up and Tai can overlook her misstep. Then again....tomorrow IS Friday, so I'm not counting on a resolution quite yet.

Were I Tai (and I'm not) I might take offense less to what Dora said than by the casual, distracted, almost dismissive way she said it -- a touch of the "other people don't really exist" vibe I've picked up from our not-quite-ex-Goth caffeinator in strips past.
Tai is realizing the danger in idealizing/idolizing someone: It's a pedestal that can be undermined by the slightest imperfection, and the fall is longer and the crash is louder than they really have any business being.
That said, I'm not betting on a blowup just yet; I've noted before a history in QC of setups for "shit's gonna go down" situations only to have it bypassed in the next day's strip (and then surface hundreds of strips later, as the flame finally reaches the other end of the fuse).

Enh, even if Joseph (Joseph? Yes?) IS into "tall" ladies, that doesn't preclude him from checking out other ladies. I check out almost everyone I meet unless I find them distinctly UNattractive at first glance... so I can see why Tai'd be pissed. It's like Dora's saying "you're so unattractive that my dad wouldn't even glance at you twice."

Actually, I think Marten once compared Tai to a pinball machine in terms of sexual attractiveness. Kid can't catch a break!

Back to the Dora "loves" Butch girls and thinks they're cute but aren't her type.  Pretty sure there was a strip about it.  Gotta say, Dora has never seemed to be attracted to Tai so much as just interested in her in general on a "you got a vag piercing, cool! gotta see that!".  Still getting the sisterly vibes from Dora.

That said.  Ughg.  That's Marten level foot in mouth.

Pervy dads may did tall girls Dora, but that doesn't mean they won't go looking at other cute girls.

That waiter IS slackin' by the way.  I'm guessing it prolly just woulda been harder to draw both plates in both hands.

Marten-Dora felt awkward at the beginning.  Nothing was more awkward than Steve-Cosette.  Or Steve-Ellen.  Or Steve-Meena.  Hell, all of Steve's pairings felt forced.  But hell if Steve-Cosette isn't true to a half dozen couples I've known over the years!

Dora/Marten wasn't awkward to me.  They/Dora just had that Faye issue in the background. Steve.  Oh man.  Steve is just an entirely different beast in this comic.

Just let Jeph work out the kinks and figure out the dynamic more, it'll feel less awkward eventually.
This is awkward on the "teenage-crush-first-date awkward" level of the scale. Yeah, Dora could have been a little more careful with her words... but who hasn't proverbially stuck their foot so far in their mouth that they're able to kick themselves in the stomach for being so stupid?

Next strip is all about the damage control, for sure.

As another said though, it is awkward to the point of being forced a bit.  As evidenced by some of the drama.  Agreed on "Fayngus" though.  Definitely the healthiest looking and most "organic" pairing yet.

Dora/Marten wasn't awkward to me.  They/Dora just had that Faye issue in the background. Steve.  Oh man.  Steve is just an entirely different beast in this comic.
The awkwardness in this situation is probably based on how little they know about each other. Tai was infatuated by Dora, because of her seemingly successful life, and her solid character. Dora accepted, based on how upfront and honest Tai was about her feelings. But was it ever established, how much do they know about each other? And how much did they really interact with each other beforehand? Not a great deal on both counts, I think.

Marten and Dora happened because their interactions (particularly after "The Talk") brought them closer and closer together. They basically knew each other inside and out, and when the question of Faye was no longer a question... well, the opportunity was there for them to learn about each other from the outside in (no matter how serious a discussion on relationships, there's always time for a good (or probably bad, in this case) sex joke).

Angus and Faye. How many relationships have started out like that, in any case? Go to a coffee shop, bar, grocery store, restaurant or other eatery... anywhere where one is providing service to another, and you'll see people interacting in a similar way. They become regulars, share quips and conversations, and it ends up like they've known each other their entire lives. Worse case scenario? One or both is married or in a relationship (although that doesn't stop some people...).

This is about as "natural" as it gets these days. The customer ends up being a regular, they see that particular cashier/barista/waitress/barmaid (or barman) because they're their favourite, and off it goes from there.

Well, I've seen (and been in) real-life relationships of all kinds (romantic, work, social) that felt and/or were "forced." So there's nothing unrealistic about Dora and Tai in that regard.

The closest thing to a vision Jeph's articulated for this comic is "People trying to get along." Trying means not always succeeding. Here, we're going to see some of that. Whether we think the pairing can work, or is one we like, is nowhere near the point. But this will have repercussions, good and bad, major and minor, within the various social sets and subsets depicted in QCVerse, and how Jeph chooses to depict that and how well he writes it, are what interests me.

If anything kills this relationship, it'll be a repeat of what happened between Marten and Dora. Awkward moments like this are to expected at the beginning of a courtship. The real test will be when Tai checks out another girl or does one of the other things that set Dora off when she and Marten were a couple. And Marten was/is a lot more easygoing than Tai. Our head librarians assistant may not put up with as much as our passive/aggressive would be guitarist did. I guess it really depends on wether Dora has her shit sorted or not.

Angry eating Tai is cute as hell, though.

"Forced" is a good word. Tai pushed this instead of having it develop naturally. That's neither right nor wrong, it's neither good writing nor bad, just a description.

The logical module in my brain knows better than to comment on relationships and human emotions, but it still blurts out opinions sometimes, and it didn't understand why an exclusive lesbian would care what a het man thought of her appearance. Unless it sounded like it was Dora's opinion.

It's probably that she said "anything revealing", and got the reply "oh YOU don't need to worry about THAT!" (because she doesn't have much to reveal).

I guess it's sort of contradictory considering that Dora doesn't pack that much er.. junk in the trunk either. What I'm trying to say is she doesn't have big boobs. Damn my limited vocabulary.

I see. I'm tired, and I just got that kind of vibe from the strip for some reason. I think I was so shocked by the fact that she would even say something like that with the emphasis on "you" that it just really, really rubbed me the wrong way.

I think it would have rubbed just about anyone the wrong way, at least initially.

Quote
If her dad really does like tall girls, I can completely understand her expression and how she said it.

Yeah, as jwhouk said... I don't believe that he's into "tall" girls for a second. That was (IMO) a bit of a clumsy lie. Would it have been to much to expect for Dora to have smoothed things over honestly?

Perhaps Dora's last girlfriend was more feminine and thus, more her Dad's taste. I think her faux pas may be related to the fact that (as MartenMom put it) Tai's a "tiny butch one".

I think Dora mentioned Tai's butchness long before Veronica Vance made said observation.

I'm actually a little pleasantly surprised that Jeph inserted any friction or drama into the parade of rainbows and unicorns.  From a writing standpoint, I don't know how he'll extricate himself from this.  The standard plot device: The shallow/stupid Dude, is not available.  Having a major character in a stable, happy, relationship is...well... boring.  But if this relationship goes south, its going to be hard to avoid making one of the girls the bad guy. Which means painting a lesbian or bisexual as the one to blame.
Hard to do without getting painted with an anti-woman/anti-gay brush.

Dora, Dora, Dora, you can't go around using your mouth as a shoe... You'd need someone else's mouth to form a pair, and they'd never match.

I agree with this a lot. I think there is more to it than Dora making foot-in-mouth gaffes. Dora seems to be giving off this whole self-absorbed and flippant sort of vibe as if its all about her. Even just her saying that she is enjoying being pursued gives it away. Whilst Tai seems genuinely interested in Dora (and has been for a long time). Even in the choice of clothes, you could see Tai going out of her comfort zone into the dress trying to be more girly because thats what she thought would be appealing to Dora. Whilst Dora, on the other hand, goes back to familiar territory in her clothing choices - she wears what she knows gets her the most attention. I don't think it is anything sinister or even thought out at all, just the impression I get of Dora's head-state.

Bubble tea is all over the place where I live, but only the odd place calls it that. The rest of the shops and restaurants call it boba. I'm surprised to see it talked about as if it were a trend that came and went. Does your area have a very small Asian community, cesario?

Mmm, boba...now I want some. I might be visiting with a good friend on Saturday who's quite the boba connoisseur - she has one or two shops that she knows make it the best and always takes people there. Also, there's me. I make boba that meets her qualifications and am quite proud of this.  :-D

I think you've hit the nail on the head.
Pretty much from the time she met Dora, Tai has had this fantasy about her. And in doing so built upon that fantasy as people tend to do. Only now, the fantasy is meeting reality and Tai is finding out the hard way that they aren't the same thing. She's desperate for the reality to match up to her expectations and its failing fast.

IT does have the sort of atmosphere about it.  Particularly since Dora had the far off expression when she told Tai she didn't have anything to worry about pervy dad coming on to her.

I am honestly seeing no real level of attraction so far on Dora's part.  So far, there was only that awkward "haha, yea sure" response to Tai's clit piercing.  That sounded like a flippant, not sure how to respond or dont' wanna hurt someone so yea, sure it looks good response.  It isn't first date jitters either.  I'm seeing absolutely zero chemistry going on here on Dora's part while Tai is trying her ass off and I don't think it's Dora trying too hard.

Like you said.  I think Dora is merely enjoying the being pursued for once and the lavish attention being heaped on her that she is in her own little world.  Awful start to something that really shouldn't have started this early given how hardcore into Dora Tai is.  There levels just dont' match.

This honestly seems like a day out with your sister still. :psyduck:

She didn't even realize what she actually said.
That's the bad part. :-o

She's just cluelessly self-centered during this date.  It's awful to see.  I love Dora, but damn.  I can't see the slightest inkling of this working, but I figured she'd have Tai's feelings more closely guarded.  I mean she DOES know how long Tai's been crushing on her.

I think it is another case for a therapy session.  She's going from "I'm not good enough to be pursed" to "I'm being pursued, I'm awesome, hear me RWAWR!"  In a bad way.

In reality though, it is better Dora NOT lead Tai on and not fake interest so much as just try to appease Tai for awhile then get fed up.  A little pain early better than a crap load latter.

Of course, being where I live in Central Wisconsin, there's at least one or two tea houses that serve the stuff. Sounds a bit too much for me, though (and I'm also not much of a tea drinker, either).

What I'm thinking is that Tai is playing the "ideal" card, while Dora is reverting to the last time she was "bi" - when she was a goth. And, as part of that "role", she's turning into this flippant, unthinking little biatch.

Of course, she could be unconsciously pushing Tai away by her actions, too. Soooo much going on here, you'd need at least two psych degrees to figure it all out - and I only have one.

That certainly isn't a good thing if that's the case.  I don't want to start a controversy, but that statement leaves me with the question of on the scale of bi, how truly bi/interested in women for a MEANINGFUL relationship she is.  Seems like she's still heavily swayed toward the area of men (I know a friend like that.  Though she doesn't really call herself bi so much as a "heteroswing" girl who likes to flirt and doesn't mind getting physical/sleeping with women but wouldn't pursue a legitimate relationship with one.)  That Dora seemingly has to switch on the "bi-switch" as it were to females, doesn't bode well.

She's either out of practice or subconsciously isn't really interested in a lasting fem/fem relationship and just wants the attention.

Dora is fast becoming unlikeable in my opinion, she just seems so vapid and self-centered, points made by basically everyone else, but truthfully though, she should know how it is to be pursued, she basically pursued Marten from the second she met him, and the only thing stopping that was Faye.

Either way, I prefer Tai as a character as i know a person just like her, Jeph has done Tai as a character really well to the point she entered the comic i thought the character was fast becoming interesting, but now it seems Dora just wants attention and will take it from anywhere at this point, which won't end up well for Tai.. or any of her other friends now.

Mebbe this belongs over in that new "character development for Marten" thread, but ...
Aside from how well this goes for Tai and/or Dora, there might be a chance for Marten to grow as a hoomin bean character here.
He seems to grow a spine especially when he perceives one of his friends being hurt/threatened.
Here he sees a gal with whom he was once involved, with whom he does not want to fight, and about whom he still gives sort of a sh!t. She's potentially hurting another person who is Marten's boss/co-worker and friend ... a self-admitted "sh!tty friend" at times, but Tai does make an effort to care about other people, including indieboy.
So ... will Marten have a reaction to the impending crash beyond "Oh jeez, oh jeez ... "? Is it his place? Will he think it is?
I'll watch.

And indeed, what's with Dora?  She does (as others have pointed out) seem to have turned into some sort of jerk with an overactive flippancy gland.

Someone's gotta be the stereotypical "stupid guy" who inevitably ruins the relationship. Looks like it's gonna be Dora, who as nearly everyone has pointed out doesn't seem to be taking this anywhere near as seriously as Tai.

Ohhh. I'd only ever heard it referred to as pearl milk tea.
Well... Pearl Milk Tea is a straight translation of its correct name in Chinese, 珍珠奶茶. I've heard the term "bubble tea" but I don't really use it. I don't like the stuff myself; or the South Asian spiced Masala tea often known here by the redundant name "Chai Tea". I prefer my tea "straight", brewed in a proper pot, or a gaiwan, without milk, sugar, spices, tapioca etc

And Dora... What are you doing?

Oh no.  When she was WITH Marten, she was overprotective and insecure.  She was never flippant from what I recall.  She was a tease though.

This is a totally new side of Dora.   A very bad sad of Dora.  I don't think she's taking this seriously at all compared to Tai.  On a scale of 1-10, 1 is Dora, 100 is Tai.

From what I'm able to discern from comic expressions (and I read a lot of varying ones and styles) the expression Dora has is a recognition of Tai stopping in the middle of the street and Dora is giving the ole' "huh?  What'd I say?" look.  Totally oblivious, hence the weirdish shocked looking expression of Dora as she's being pulling along by a frantic Tai who has decided to change their destination.

This makes sense. When have we seen Dora wanting to know more about Tai as a person?

*Ahem*

Dora's interest in Tai has never been on the same level that Tai's interest in Dora has been. That's why this whole comic seems extremely silly to me. Dora know basically nothing about Tai outside of what she's known through all of them hanging out and what she now knows. However, despite all of that, she just goes in and kisses Tai like she was waiting for it all along?

Interesting parallel.  Though, Marten has grown just a bit, so I'm not sure sure even HE would making this much of an ass of himself.  In fact, Marten is seemingly almost without any sort of established ego. :psyduck:  Maybe I'm wrong, but.  I just think it is actually a role reversal for Dora.  Dora is the asshat boyfriend in this instance instead of the insecure girl role that Tai is now maintaining.  A complete opposite of what her therapy is trying to solve.

Which why it appears she's going to need sessions of a different topic and sort now.

Dora/Tai, as much as I love it, feels like Sven/Faye.
Faye realizes here is someone who will happily be with her, so grabs on and goes for the kiss (and in her case, quite a bit more, but, well....) and despite not having a whole lot of actual romantic feelings, likes that she is suddenly desirable and desired.
I could see Marten giving Sven a head's-up to point out to his sister that she is becoming what she hates, one of the other characters mentioning this to Dora (possibly Hanners? She is so sweetly oblivious), or Tai getting over the Dora-crush and breaking it off. I don't see Dora or Tai cheating, not at this point, at least.

Like I said, both are trying too hard.

Tai has had a crush on Dora for a while and is, I think, at the point where she's looking for something a little more than the kind of relationships she's had up until now and sees Dora as a possible 'Change of Pace' from that. As such she is a little unsure and skittish about her first date with Dora.

As for Dora, I think she's still dealing with her issues after the Marten breakup and is making gaffs because of it. She's also aware of Tais past, and I think is a little unsure about where this is going  This is definitely not  the 'Real' Dora, and she needs to relax.  I think if she does, she might be surprised at how things go with Tai.

Of course, this whole thing could crash and burn, which will just add to the usual angst prevalent in their lives.

Come on now - she's not being self-centered, I think she's just nervous or anxious.  I had a date recently in which, in retrospect, I'd inadvertently spent way too much time talking about myself.  Doesn't mean that I'm self-centered(i am like the painful opposite of that), it just means that words just kept flowing and flowing out because of nerves.  Sometimes it's hard to remember to keep asking questions of the other person, especially if you're nervous.  I mean, hopefully, the conversation just flows naturally, but we don't know if this one is or isn't (presumably it is).  Also keep in mind that we're not seeing the whole conversation - there may indeed so many other parts where Tai is talking about herself and whatnot, so we shouldn't jump to conclusions.

Whether this is a case of obliviousness, nervousness, or just plain dumbfoundedness...Dora's really gotta watch her words. Tai really seems to be struggling to keep things working here. To be honest, I really feel sorry for her.

As much as I don't want it to, I can see it crashing and burning if Dora doesn't turn her current mentality around.

More than that, she really seems to be a relaxed space cadet more than anything. I see no nerves -at all- going on here, in facial expression or, more importantly, body language. I mean, in half the panels she's staring off into space with that slight smile, and not even looking at Tai when she talks half the time. 'Disconnected' i probably the best term I have for it.

Exactly.  Flippant and "Disconnected" describes it perfectly.  I see no bundle of nerves.  She seems distracted to the point of indifference.  Definitely not showing much interest in Tai as you would expect after she out of leftfield kissed Tai.

I wouldn't call her distractedness the result of "indifference;" to the contrary, I think she's just so happy to be being pursued that she's letting her mouth run away with her. Not because she doesn't care, or doesn't think she needs to, but because she's happy and not trying to be overly concerned about every statement she makes for once. And honestly, with Dora, when she stops particularly paying attention to NOT saying stupid things, it makes sense that that would result in foot-in-mouth scenarios left and right.

First time poster (who would have posted on Friday but forgot to de-spam pony-whatsit) and occasional lurker here  :-)

What I think  we're going to see next week is Dora struggling to get a second date from a disillusioned Tai and thus the persuee will become the persuer. I'm still not feeling Tai and Dora as a couple, but I'd love to see Dora deciding whether she genuinely wants to date Tai and pull her socks up accordingly (nicer ones than she's wearing, dear lord Dora, just be yourself).

I'm seriously hoping the tables will be turned on Dora, even if she only comes to the conclusion that she and Tai should be friends (and also because I liked Jim and want to see more of him and Sam via Dora-dating).

Anxiety and nervousness just aren't reflective of Dora's personality. She's anxious about things like meeting the parents, as many normal people would be, but when it comes to something she wants or expects...nope. Proactive all the way.

Looking back on it, she was a good match for Marten. She encourages him to be more forthcoming, something I couldn't see with any of the other QC ladies.

EDIT: Those fucking socks. I had to go back and check after someone made a comment about it, but goodness, they really are horrible. She needs to excuse herself for a midday change.

How I always figured it to be.  Insecurity is reflective of Dora's personality.  Made clear with Faye.  But she had no problem making it known that to Marten her worries about Faye.  (Granted, even then she let it go to hell but).  Dora is proactive from a comic perspective about what she wants.  And she makes it clear what she wants and isn't ready for.  (Letting Jim down easy was a good step of growth for her).

I just don't know how one can excuse and gloss over Dora's thoughtlessness, repeated thoughtlessness I might add, and staring off into lala land and not really paying attention to Tai.  That isn't how nervousness manifests.  Now when you add up ALL the errors Dora has had since the kiss.  Doesn't jive with me.  I don't recall Dora EVER blubbering this much or being spacey when she just started off with Marten.  Again back to the argument that, comparing the beginnings, Marten was something Dora always wanted while Tai is just something random she's following, subconsciously maybe, so far, because of the joy of being chased.

We know she gave no thought to this whole relationship, so therefore she has no anxiety about it. Right now, she's probably in the same shoes Marten was after The Kiss on the rooftop - discombobulated, disoriented and such. She IS disconnecting with things - which is giving Tai a "where the #### is the Dora that I was lusting/longing for?" feeling.

This will not end well.

So ... will Marten have a reaction to the impending crash beyond "Oh jeez, oh jeez ... "? Is it his place? Will he think it is?
I'll watch.
This strikes me as an odd expectation.  Dating in my (limited) experience is a pretty high contact sport.  There are few 'fouls' recognized.  If things don't work out, the criteria for throwing a flag are pretty much 1)cheating, 2)abuse and 3)theft/damage to stuff.  #2 is fairly broad, but its above and beyond just not meeting somebody's expectations of martyring yourself for love.
You play the game right, there's a lot of emotional energy involved. Somebody usually gets hurt before its over.
If Tai goes psycho-posessive or Dora goes narcissistic insensitve, well, they are both big girls.
I think it would honestly be kind of patronizing if Marten rode in on a white... whatever.
Turn it around.  If Angus got hurt, would you expect Marten to 'rescue' him?

What I think  we're going to see next week is Dora struggling to get a second date from a disillusioned Tai and thus the persuee will become the persuer.

Welcome, new person!

I can see that happening. It might take more than one bad date to shake Tai's aDORAtion.

I thought their effort was aDORAble, but then one pun probably isn't enough to TAI'd you over... :D

Ahem.

I can see where you're coming from, and I do agree with you to a point. This date couldn't have gone worse so far unless snakes were involved, but you can see Tai is trying desperately to hold things together, which is rather noble of her.

I don't know whether Dora is oblivious to Tai's advances (personally, I doubt it very much), but she is pretty oblivious to her own words, and unless either Tai steps in and tells her so, or puts a rain-check on the remainder of the date (if she decides to follow through at all), or Dora snaps out of whatever la-la-land she's occupying and realises the change in Tai's attitude, it's hard to see this ending happily.

Personally, I would love to see Tai and Dora work this out (not just on the "hurr hurr lesbians hurr" level, more on the "they deserve to be happy and I would love to see that" level).

So ... will Marten have a reaction to the impending crash beyond "Oh jeez, oh jeez ... "? Is it his place? Will he think it is?
I'll watch.
This strikes me as an odd expectation. ...
I think it would honestly be kind of patronizing if Marten rode in on a white... whatever.
Turn it around.  If Angus got hurt, would you expect Marten to 'rescue' him?
Who said anything about "rescuing" or even taking sides? I'm talking about Marten being a mensch, looking outside himself and doing whatever being a Decent Human Being requires for either or both of two people for whom he obviously gives a damn. He did that for Faye on at least two occasions I can think of, including when she was anxious about her then-budding relationship with Angus. No horses of any color need be involved.

I don't get the vibe that the date is going quite as disastrously as everyone's saying. Yes, there were a couple (funnily) uncomfortable things said that we were privy to, but there's no reason to think the rest of the date that was going on "off-screen" hasn't been going perfectly well. I agree that if Dora's head CONTINUES to stay in the clouds following the date and for some time after that there'll be a problem, but it didn't really seem to me like Tai had been going out of her way the entire date to prevent disaster, besides the understandable Bubble Tea intervention of course

I wonder if Marten will really be very closely aware of whats going on.  Tai: "Let me tell you about my date with your ex-girlfriend",  Dora: "Hey, I know we don't talk much, but let me tell you about my date with Tai."

It seems a tad early to be drawing long-reaching conclusions about the relationship. I'm sure there are more than a few long-term relationships that have had more awkward starts than this.

Not that I'm saying that this one will definitely succeed either, but come on.

Now all I can think of is "When Harry met Sally".

Dammit.

I've been thinking of "When Harry met Sally" all week, so at least now I'm not the only one. :D

Your right....so, which flavors Tai and Dora will get? Or will they fight over that?

Now that you mention it, the defense that "there's nothing else interesting to talk about" could explain a lot of what goes on in the media...

Now here's an idea that's almost certainly wrong but makes a kind of sense.

What if Dora really is spaced out?

What if her long-standing social anxiety flared up so badly that she popped something her therapist prescribed, or something Hannelore offered?
