Title: The Binding of Isaac
Post by: Gnomes2169 on 29 Sep 2012, 12:06
This game is... terrifyingly disturbing. On steam, it was for sale (with its DLC) for $1.78 and while I do love how (impossibly) challenging it is... shit man. Oddly enough, it is surprisingly addicting. I put in 3 hours yesterday, and not a single one of my games was the same because of the massive variability of the items, enemies, bosses, etc. If you have a few extra dollars (the base game is about $5 normally and the DLC is $1), I would suggest trying it out.

It's really good, yes. I'd like to discuss more about the bosses and late game encounters, but you should really see those for yourself.

Dear god Mom is obnoxious... but easy to deal with if you have the right combo (which happens one in a million times...). The Headless Horseman and pestilence are two very interesting bosses as well, what with their charge thing and all, while Famine and the Lord of Flies are just too easy and generally drop worthless things.  Now, I know there are more than 13 endings to this game (many darker than others), but the symbolism of going into the womb and the coat hanger (when you put them together) is just too creepy...

On of my friends doesn't take evil items or make deals with the devil. His loss, really, since some of the best items can be bought that way... and also, who doesn't want to look like a freakin' demon, right?

There are some combos that's horribly efficient. The habit together with the yum heart makes you able to refill health (almost) as fast as you lose it. Anything flying together with lots of bombs makes killing mother a piece of cake, since you can just fly around in circles and bomb the doors. Technology and the ouija board is crazy effective at killing a lot of things.

I really hate the one that gives you explosive shots, though. While it's effective, and lets you check for hidden doors, dammit is it impossible to hit stuff chasing you, or moving fast.

Haven't gotten the Ouija board yet, and I've only had Technology once. But playing as Marry I got the habit immediately and then the 9volt battery and health, health and more health. I was basically invincible by the time I got to Mom, so that was one of those rare one in  hundred games that was broken in my favor (for once). I also like the PHD when you are in a dungeon with lots and lots of pills, since it makes it so that you never get a bad pill or bad gas, only stat boosts. My attack rate had almost constant shots and I was able to shoot across the entire field.

Ever gotten the 3 dollar bill?

Ipcack is obnoxious at first, but with a shorter ranged character (such as Mary and Eve) it is actually scary dangerous since you are sill able to move ever so slightly faster than most enemies and the AOE takes care of the rest. It can one-shot any non-boss, and takes down most bosses (besides Mom) in two or three shots.

The remake, Binding of Isaac: Rebirth is out, or has been out for a week. Some few gameplay changes are there (I wouldn't really know the extent of them, I haven't played the original that much), but the biggest addition for me is gamepad support out of the box. It makes the game easier for me to play (and doesn't give me friggin carpal tunnel every time i play it).

I rather enjoy the new character, Azazel. If I understand correctly, Azazel has a short-range brimstone and flight at start. His range is absolutely abysmal, so you have to get very close to enemies to defeat them. He also has no permanent health, instead he has three black hearts (soul hearts that do damage to all enemies when depleted). This makes him an interesting character, as it becomes ridiculously difficult to win if you don't pick up enough HP in a run. It also makes deals with the devil that much more difficult.

But he's still OP as fuck :D
