Jeph notes the possibility of his losing power (http://jephjacques.com/post/34470438088/hurricanes-are-stupid) this week, which obviously could affect the comic's schedule.  Of course, we hope everything will be OK.

And you say that last part as if it was a bad thing. I mean, there would be a chance of the weather impacting the shenanigans ..... shenanigans !!!!!elevensies!!!!

On a different note .... Apples to Oranges? Really? ..... I would have picked  Cards Against Humanity (http://cardsagainsthumanity.com) myself, but that is just my inner geek / 12 year old speaking, and it tends to make even a sailor blush at times.

It's a shill for one of my favorite and long-tenured comic artists, Jon Kovalic.

Who, ironically enough, draws a comic featuring a muskrat.

Which invites the question of how Hannelore can be comfortable in a swimsuit that doesn't have room for her usual concealed weapons. Remember how scared she was on the pseudo-date when she left her purse in the restaurant and had to go unarmed?

Maybe there's a stealthed security droid following her around.

Frankly, I'm surprised Clinton is even there. Even though he's gotten better with his personal space skills, I wouldn't really call him their friend, more of a tolerated presence (like Angus was, at first). And we know he and Claire don't really like each other, so who actually even invited him?

And a reinforced center, like John Steed's bowler.

Hannelore trusting The Pugnacious Peach as a bodyguard is justified, but proof of character development if that's the explanation.

It's called stroking the ego, among other things. Some introverts actually like it when people shanghai them from their daily routine. Oh, they'll bitch and kick and scream, but that's because they're keeping up appearances.

No, I'm not talking from experience.

Sometimes, you're somewhat uncomfortable with something, though you know that there'd really be no harm in doing it. So you refuse, knowing that the people around you will convince you to do it anyway. The attention is refreshing, especially if you're usually the type to intentionally blend in with the crowd. If you do it too much, however, you can come across as an attention whore.

At any rate, Mari is adorable when reluctant x3

Introverted personalities can be like that sometimes. They put themselves down to see if someone there will pick them up.

Some people like to think that they're "all that", Marigold puts herself as... nothing much, really.

Yeah, I've been there and done that. And still do sometimes. Headcases, eh?

Two things:

1. Marten wasn't the only one who received an invitation to the party. Claire did as well. She probably didn't have anyone else to invite, so she invited her brother. Of course, it might be that she can't drive, so Clinton had to take her.

2. This bikini is either going to look awesome on her or is going to be ridiculous.

The last strip before the storm knocks out Jeph's connection to the rest of the world will feature Marigold's voice OP saying, OK, here it is, what do you think, with the other cast members looking at the fourth wall with various stunned expressions.

(That's how I'd do it, anyway.)

At least Marigold is honest. Hanner's GENIUS is an exclamation I can hear clearly in my head.

Agreed. Bikinis come in all sizes.

I mean, go to a beach in Brazil. Pretty much all of the women are wearing bikinis, regardless of their body type.

Women of Faye and Marigold's body types may not always be comfortable wearing bikinis in a culture that tells them they're aren't the ideal of beauty, but they would certainly be able to find bikinis that would fit.

I always thought bikinis were made for skinny girls like me so we feel like we have something of a shape. Of course, I'm not really the best person to say this, as I had to order a medium for my bottom piece and a small for the top. :P It was $10 for the set, so sue me. =P

Girls with super-curvy bodies like Faye and Mar-Bear tend to, um, not really fit into them well? I guess it's probably a matter of not knowing the right size for themselves, but it seems like most curvy girls with bikinis are about to pop out any second. I'd really rather not be flogged by a wayward breast. :P If it is a matter of not knowing your size (which as I said, I suspect it is), then that probably comes from the body-shaming that our culture has shoved upon us. :/ I really wish I was curvy, so please don't feel bad about yourselves, oh lovely curvy ones! There are people who would love to have your body! <3

Willis lives in Columbus, I believe -- but I'm hearing no reports of damaging weather from friends there. Wind's nice and whippy up here by Toledo, though -- and I heard from a friend from Cleveland that Lake Erie over that way was temporarily good for surfing.

Willis probably has all sorts of Marigold, Faye and Hannelore fanservice art ready to go.

Hmm. A prediction:

Marigold will try the bikini on.  <- correct
The bikini will be supportive.   <- correct
Angus will notice and will demonstrate an ability for basic learning.
Marten will notice and will be cool.  <- false, me thinks
Steve will notice and will be Steve.
Tai will notice. She will be about to say something, but will remember at the last moment that Dora is there.
Hannelore, Dora and Faye will be supportive.
Emily and Gabby will not notice.
Clinton will notice and awkwardness will ensue.
Claire will try to make fun of her brother.
Cosette will notice, and keep an eye on Steve's reaction.

You'd think Marten would be more adept at compliments considering his dating experience now..

That said, Adorable Marigold is Adorable.

Big thanks to Jeph for getting us a comic up in the middle of a hurricane...

Now we just need Bill Clinton to stand on the edge of the eastern coast with his trousers around his ankles going "Hey Sandy, Blow this!"

Maybe, but this is Marigold he's trying to compliment. I'm pretty sure even Sven would have a hard time.

I had to order a medium for my bottom piece and a small for the top.

This is the problem with so many bikinis, and the reason that I used to buy mine from the same place I bought my bras - they sold them as separate pieces! And I could get fitted properly, as if it were a bra! Nowadays I don't wear bikinis (actually I don't have any swimwear at the moment) so it's not an issue any more.

I'm also a big fan of the concept of Pepperberry, which is a shop that sells dresses with different ratios of waist to chest size. They're labelled according to curviness, which is cute. If I ever have money I'm going to and buy a dress from them.

His gymnastic (and possibly contortionist) abilities astound even himself as he scores a double...

Man, Marigold really has some body image issues. Not to ogle fictional comic characters, but I rather like women of that body shape (healthily plump (although a diet of pocky and ramen isn't really "healthy", but you know what I mean... I hope). I agree with Marten's first comment.

But yeah, he probably should have stopped there. Mar-bear might have been a little surprised (hence the expression and the blush), but I reckon she might have appreciated it (eventually, knowing her).

Been watching Goldfinger?

In the cinema.

When it released.

I'm jealous - 35 years of watching Bond movies (sue me I was a started late) and that's still my favourite.

As for today's comic, Marigold is definitely looking very good in that swimsuit, and while the compliment was merited, the stammering explanations undoubtedly served to make it uncomfortable.  But at least she's not running back to change.

Marigold looks absolutely adorable in this strip. I'm not quite sure about the bikini though, given Marigold's body type I would think she would be bit more plump (though not obese) whereas today's strip makes her look curvy with little extra fat, at least to me.

This strip definately marks the possibility of Marten/Marigold happening. We did speculate that Marten, as pseudo-main character might end up with someone seeing as this is major arc, and Marigold is available. Also, Marten wouldn't be likely to hurt her in a relationship. It all depends on how he and Marigold feel about it. In particular since Marigold can be/is very clueless about relationships.

And, finally, I don't think she realises this, but, Marigold made a guy flustered based on her looks, which, knowing her and her history, I can't imagine has happened before. It might be considered a milestone, though, just the fact that she walked out in that bikini with her self-confidence problems is a pretty big thing. If she actually goes out in it to the lake it will be a definite step forward in her character development. Because she isn't as strong as Hanners (personality-wise) she hasn't progressed as much as Hanners has, so it's always nice to see her take steps forward. Also, she looks really cute in the last couple of panels as her blush darkens while Marten is getting more and more flustered.

And who he's saying it to, since let's be honest, Marty could win world records for suave and Marigold would still have reacted thusly.

Marigold is definitely looking good in her bathing suit. Nothing wrong with a curvy woman. As for Marten, it's obvious he started off well with a compliment but knowing Mari's sensitive nature, he tries to backpedal and only inserts his foot in his mouth after he's said some ridiculous things. So overall, a normal happening in QC. As for the Marten-Marigold shippers out there, cut that out. I'm going to need to see a little more interaction between the two before I start breaking out the champagne bottles to christen the H.M.S. Martengold.

A vast majority of the positives responses are likely to be adolescent enjoyment, but Marten seems to be genuinely intent to confirming Marigold's attractiveness and being a good friend. A Marten/Marigold relationship seems to far fetched to me.

How would we know ? Its a Comic. People look drastically different all the time. The only way to know how attractive a person is supposed to be is by examining reactions in the comic itself, not by deciding how much you like the art.

Remember, every person in this comic is virtual. They dont exist in reality. You cant just look at them and say "whow" or "nice" or "meh" or "eww" like in reallife.

Why not?

Are we not allowed to express our appreciation for the art, and what it depicts?

Poor Marigold.

She's not comfortable with her body, she's a severe otaku where all the girls are samples of sparkly, impossibly doe-eyed perfection, and she's got a bit of a tummy. And that's a *really* skimpy bikini. Of course she's gonna be all self-conscious and think she's terribly unattractive.

I know a woman like this: not classically pretty, boomin' body, extremely shy, very good at her career -- and severe body-image and attractiveness issues, wouldn't get caught dead in a bikini.

That said: daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaang

For comic #2307... (https://questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=2307)

1. Yay for Marigold, even if she does not realize she just took a big step forward.

2. I also expect much "Daaang"-ing by the other boys, and possibly Dora & Tai.  The latter two might be more entertaining.

3. Artwise, good progression on Marigold's blushing.  Might have been even cuter/amusing if her blushing had extended past her face  .

4. Well Marten may have crashed & burned with with the compliment, but standing there chugging a beer is not exactly a graceful escape either :psyduck: .

5. Ironically, personality-wise, Marten probably would be a good first boyfriend choice for Marigold (but not the reverse, more irony there).  Marigold would need, in a "good" first boyfriend, someone would be patient enough to deal with her (initial) insecurities, a trait Marten has in spades.

I stand by my original statement earlier in story-arc that I do not see Marten getting involved with with any of the library interns (or Marigold, or "Tannelore" ) at the lake party.

6. I am with Border Reiver's opinion that we are allowed to have opinions, about any form of artwork, comic or gallery.

7. [Bart]: (to Homer) Of course you need other people to tell you that you're cool.
[Lisa]: (also to Homer) How else would you know...?
          -The Simpsons, Homerpalooza (S07,Ep24)

8. Warning - While you were typing, the long "Daaaaaaaaaang" freight-train has had plenty of time to pass.   You may wish to review your post, and drive forward before you get honked at.

:P If it is a matter of not knowing your size (which as I said, I suspect it is), then that probably comes from the body-shaming that our culture has shoved upon us

Mostly, this is because bikinis that would fit such women properly aren't easily found at Walmart, or even the local bathing suit store. Something with appropriate cup sizes, support, and possibly even underwire generally has to come from a specialty store (and that's expensive!). There's also the whole thing about most women not knowing their proper cup size. Think you're a DD? Well, maybe you are, but you are more likely an F or G or H! Cup sizes are weird and most non-specialty stores don't really work for large-breasted women.

As my wife tends to suffer from these issues, I have learned to appreciate the inconveniences that she faces almost as much as I appreciate the *ahem* sources of those inconveniences.

But Marbear....lookin' fine.  Pretty much the hour glass figured, but tapered up top a bit more.  Just wide hips.

This. I'm scrawny through no fault of my own (having the metabolism of a hyperactive ferret tends to lend itself to said scrawniness). I guess I'm immediately sub-par because of it? Personally, I find all body types on women to be interesting, because no two are the same - fat or skinny, no exceptions.

Also, can we please refrain from using that obnoxious tiny text? I hate having to interrupt my read flow by clicking quote, just so I don't miss anything, and frankly I think it's a little inconsiderate to make people do that, just to be able to read the entirety of one's post.

Enough of my bitching, and onto the comic - Yes, Mari is rockin' that bikini. And poor Marten. Poor boy just can't win.

Yes. I admit it. I DANG'ed. This story arc might go a LONG way towards helping Mari with her self-confidence issues. If she wanted to be talked into wearing the suit, she knows, at least a bit, that she looks good in it. There are enough guys at the party that she could get a huge, if awkward, confidence boost.

She's asking about the device between Pintsize's legs in the previous strip. Google "Fleshlight".

Curvey women > not-curvey women

As a decidedly not-curvy woman, I would like to object to ranking of women based on physical characteristics, but unfortunately I am afraid that I have to agree with your assertion, curvy women are indeed preferable.

I dunno...I like curves, but not an abundance of curves.  But then, I like small athletic builds for girls.  Then again, I was cursed with a slim body.  Strength increases, everything else stays the same.

But Marbear....lookin' fine.  Pretty much the hour glass figured, but tapered up top a bit more.  Just wide hips.

Really wonder what Tai and Dora will have on now.

I like athletic builds as well. Frankly, I like most builds as long as they are healthy. I was cursed with a slim body as well. I can't add mass to save my life, literally. I had body issues for a long time because of it. Too skinny, mistaken for a boy, etc. Bloody hyperactive metabolism. I eventually learned to be okay with my body and now I dig it. But, I still tend to be more attracted to the curves. Nice hips, round butt, and let's not forget that ladies' bosoms are rad.

Hey Jeff,

Congrats on finally have a fat girl in your comic, you depicted her SOOO well! I understand that not ever girl is rail thin like Dora and curvy like Faye so its nice to see a REAL woman like Marigold in your comic. I have to give you props for having the courage to tackle such a sensitive issue too. I mean she did have any rolls, or stretch marks or even a muffin top, and I think that’s great. Ya, put her in a bikini, break down those walls. Your a regular Gobachev my friend. Lets just say keep up the good work, next you can depict the “fatty” Marigold having a “fat issue” and being told its okay to be fat and its whats inside that matters. You can even end it with a butt joke like you always do.

Inconclusion, the above paragraph was sarcastically written. Try not to insult women anymore Jeph, I know its not what you intended but that doesn’t meant its not what you did.

How people manage to draw insult from Questionable Content is beyond me.

I read this comic because of it's lack of insult.   Jeph doesn't use his comic to promote a religious stance,  political preference... he doesn't use it to broadcast a message or a worldview or an opinion.

Those things he occasional tweets or get posted on his other media-presences.    Which I can ignore if they don't jive with mine... and get back to the finer things in life --- enjoying his comic.

That said.  I prefer squishy girls.    IF THEY WERE REAL (they are not)  Faye and Marigold (and Raven to some extent) would be "my type."    I see nothing insulting about the way they are drawn...  I see nothing insulting about the way they are portrayed...  if anything I can point to each of the characters in this strip and say "I know someone like that."

Hope the person who expressed his opinion in that email enjoys his internet fame.   In the end all he accomplished was annoying Jeph (apparently?) and some of Jeph's fans.

Curvey women > not-curvey women
As a decidedly not-curvy woman, I would like to object to ranking of women based on physical characteristics
This. I'm scrawny through no fault of my own (having the metabolism of a hyperactive ferret tends to lend itself to said scrawniness). I guess I'm immediately sub-par because of it?

Also, can we please refrain from using that obnoxious tiny text? I hate having to interrupt my read flow by clicking quote, just so I don't miss anything, and frankly I think it's a little inconsiderate to make people do that, just to be able to read the entirety of one's post.
Right on, sitnspin and Omega Entity.

My bottom half is curvy. Does that make me at least half as good as a curvy woman?

Physical attributes don't make the person, and it's honestly a dagger to my self-esteem every time I see stuff like that. I can't make my top half curvy to save my life. And I hate it. Thanks for validating that I should feel that way. :/

I would really like to be curvier. But I just can't force my body into doing that, no matter what I try. But all bodies are good bodies, unless you're physically ill because of it (whether you're big or small). I don't say that any body type on a man makes them better. Please try to extend the same courtesy to me.

And agreed on the tiny text. If it's short, I can highlight it, and it's all, "Search Google for [insert phrase]." But if it's too long, I have to hit the quote button, and by the time I get around to looking at that tab, it's become relatively irrelevant. You can make text small while still being readable. Just another courtesy, please. :)

And what is that person who sent that comment so butthurt about? This is an accurate portrayal of Marigold as a character, not "Generic Big-Bodied Girl #1."

Oops, missed this one:

I like athletic builds as well. Frankly, I like most builds as long as they are healthy. I was cursed with a slim body as well. I can't add mass to save my life, literally. I had body issues for a long time because of it. Too skinny, mistaken for a boy, etc. Bloody hyperactive metabolism. I eventually learned to be okay with my body and now I dig it. But, I still tend to be more attracted to the curves. Nice hips, round butt, and let's not forget that ladies' bosoms are rad.
I've also been mistaken for a boy quite a few times. :( I'm starting to learn to be okay with it. And if I were attracted to women, I can't say I'd say differently.

And this one:

I'm also a big fan of the concept of Pepperberry, which is a shop that sells dresses with different ratios of waist to chest size. They're labelled according to curviness, which is cute. If I ever have money I'm going to and buy a dress from them.
I pretty much went immediately to their website as soon as you mentioned it. XD Sounds like a good plan--I may do the same! How bad is the price of shipping from the UK to the US?

See, that's what I don't get. I read comics to enjoy them, and I generally don't look any deeper than the story being told. Do people get a kick out of getting riled over some nit-picked detail that was most likely just some insignificant thing? Why can't a story just be a story? Does every story published have to be PC to every person on earth for it to not fall victim to this sort of thing? I personally hate politics, so I really have no desire to see anything about them in what I read.

1. Ah damn it...  I come home from a wearisome night of late-hour work, to a filler comic because of some cellulite-for-brains' attempt at high sarcasm...?

2. Well then I hope that "Jeff Jockes" and "Michael Gobachev" will reach the same "inconclusions", and try not to insult any other Kearsley'es in the world, because I certainly was so moved by Kearsley's obviously fine-measured response.

3. Alternatively, for Kearsley...

It's a puzzle as to what this person wanted to achieve. Do they want QC to be some sort of Jersey Shore knock-off (God help (read: smite) the person who ever tries to do something like that...)? Or do they possibly expect Marigold to have the same appearance as a candle under a heat lamp?

God damn it... I could understand this sort of negative reaction if Jeph had portrayed Marten as taunting Marigold for her shape, but since Marbear is the one with the negative connotations toward herself (most people can relate to this, at least) and Marten trying to (and yes, hilariously failing at) being supportive (most people can relate to this (or at least those of us with some shreds of decency and compassion), even if we suck at it), then I fail to see what this troll has tried to achieve besides bringing one person with enough issues on his plate down further, and pissing off a bunch of other people who are trying to enjoy a small piece of said person's world and support him in the best way we can (even if it's just reading the comic and getting a smile out of it).

Although, given the nature of trolls, it wouldn't surprise me if that was their goal all along...

I doubt Jeph took the day off because of one moronic twitter comment, I'd suspect it might just be more that he was overwhelmed - it's been a tough week for everyone on the east coast (not exactly the situation I'd want to be stopping smoking during).

A lot of how Marigold looks normally is due to her clothes. If she wears baggy clothes her figure is obscured. I wear a lot of baggy clothing, not particularly because I'm ashamed of my body but because I consider it to be private, and as Redball once put it, it's hard to see where my clothes end and I start. That could very easily be Marigold's situation as well.

I can kind of sympathise with kearsley's overriding point (see "Hollywood Pudgy" on TV Tropes - it is, incidentally, debated there whether QC exemplifies this trope or is an aversion), but it wasn't very well made, nor is QC an especially good target.

Oooh oooh! You understood the overriding point? Can you explain it to me?

What ?

Wait a moment, Marigold is supposed to be FAT ?  :?

She's certainly voluptuous, but I cant see that she would be overweight. She still has nice curves.

Kind of like this devianart artist: http://honeymodel.deviantart.com/art/Back-In-Blue-96-86951393

Very curvy, but not to the degree that she would lose form.

Didn't you know? Thin women are actually cyborgs. From space. They're also half unicorn and they eat tiny Cthulhu plushies with marshmallows and souls for breakfast.

(Hopefully my attempt at sarcasm isn't as pitiful as that Tumblr twat's was.)

Tumblr people really like to get offended. If you've offended someone on Tumblr, then it's really not that much of a surprise, and it probably means you're doing something right. I'm sad about lack of comic today, but I'm even sadder that so many people are getting angry because their interpretation of Marigold is different than her own creator's. People are dumb.

I had one of those jobs where I had to develop a thick skin because of people reacting to the way I did it. I think I succeeded at it.
Except that I swung too far in the other direction, and was automatically cynical about everyone's reaction. I had to climb out of that, and I think I (mostly) succeeded.
I didn't have any of the other shit-to-deal-with that Jeph has to deal with, although it was in the interests of a few people to claim I did.
Yes, I'm very glad I left that job.
In a way, Jeph gets partial credit for that; the strip in which Faye and Angus talk about what they wanted to do with their lives and why they hadn't done it yet focused something I hadn't been able to put into words for a while. I printed it out and kept it in my desk at work, right up until the day I told my boss what he could do with my key card.
So I wish I had something to offer Jeph that's better than "thanks" and "it gets better, it really does."

No kidding. Even if she *was* fat, wearing baggy clothes is only going to make her look fatter. Of course she's going to appear more shapely in a bikini than in an oversized t-shirt.

Just want to pipe up and agree that Tumblr troll is trollish. Unfortunately, one of the ways to obtain Internet Fame these days is to successfully incite a blog riot, whether it's on Tumblr, or LiveJournal, or whatever. I've watched it happen a few times in the science fiction fan/writing community, and it's never pretty and makes the virtual lynch mob always look petty and stupid. Fortunately, it looks like this attempt has been an abject failure in that regard.

I also want to say one thing I really respect about the QC universe of characters. What is always apparent is that no matter what any particular character's issue may be, the rest of this particular group of friends has their back. Marigold felt confident enough to try this, and despite Marten's fumble, I'm sure as embarrassed as she is at the moment, she knows nobody is going to purposely try to hurt her feelings in this group. For anybody, when you're attempting to spread your wings just a little bit further, it really does help to have friends supporting you.

That's an insightful and important point.

To continue with it, it's notable how even the characters with the worst issues try to help the others. Hannelore is only the most obvious example.

This is what I think as well. You can see how her clothes affect her appearance really clearly in yesterday's comic. Look at her waist in the first/second panel with the t-shirt, with all the lines at the bottom showing how loose it is, compared to her waist in the bikini.

Sometimes I wonder if Marigold keeps her room and herself tidy just to make Hannelore comfortable. She let her room get rat infested, so I doubt she made the decision to keep her room clean overnight. It takes time to become tidy by habit. But if you have a friend with severe problems like Hannelore, you might do your darnedest to keep them comfortable. (Even without threats (http://questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=1418).)

I really don't get why Tumblr person is all mad. We've seen Marbear in a corset (http://questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=1471) before; it's not like we didn't know she's not huge. She's the comparatively heavy friend like Faye (http://questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=353). She just doesn't have the right attitude about it.

I'm guessing the person isn't familiar with the comic in the first place, and has only seen the last few strips to catch onto Mari's poor self image.  The other people this last week or so (with the notable exception of Faye) are all pretty skinny (well, not Steve, but he has a different self-image problem ;) )

It's funny, I thought the expression was really well done to convey an actual comment of "looking good" rather than "looking gooood *leer*", so I'm surprised at the shipping. And the idea that his foot in mouth episode would in any way be off-putting if they were attracted to each other. I dunno, I thought it was funny and realistic; I do the same thing myself sometimes. One reason I fail at complimenting people in real life.  :psyduck:

That comment to Jeph was a load of bullshit but I must say I'd always read Marigold as a little fatter, and would have liked to see a bit of roll going on (she could still look good!) But also, it's a comic, things are simplified. And it's not that big a deal. *shrug*

When I read that on Jeph's Twitter I made some Sandy connection and hoped it referred to internet connectivity.
When I looked again at because hey i just committed to one, it was more worrisome.
I'm thinking of New Jersey's governor, asked today about the election: "Fuck the election, I'm thinking of my people." He used different words, of course.
Fuck the comic, Jeph, take your time!
In a different group, someone might ask for prayers. In this group, we wish him the best. He gives us a lot, including a place and reason for a lot of remarkable people to meet.

I have to admit, "She looks like Kelly Brook when Kelly Brook isn't being photoshopped for magazines" is the first thing I thought of when I saw Marigold in the bikini in panel 3 of 2307.  My second thought was this (http://questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=1880).  I'm not invested in the characters the way a lot of people apparently are, so I can't quite get the twumblrage (that's twitter and tumblr and umbrage and I guess rage) expressed at it, but I can sort of understand some confusion if your perception of Marigold's body was taking Marigold's opinion at face value (and you think what's happening in 2307 is what's alluded to in 1880).

Panels 5 and 6 are closer to what I 'imagined' Marigold was body wise - as chesty but not as femininely curvy as Faye, so her extra weight doesn't wear quite as well. All that said,  I think if you get too wrapped up in a character's appearance you're missing the point of the whole thing, this is QC and characters shift in height, weight, body shape slightly panel to panel, and wildly differ art era to art era.

This is pure out the butt speculation, but maybe Jeph is finding this more annoying than usual because it's about the art more than the writing?  For the longest time Faye's aerodynamic curvasiveness was to me an informed quality, and not something I'd guess from the art for the first several hundred strips.  And this sentiment of "Marigold's not fat enough" could be a style/art thing, and Jeph feels crappy because it didn't come out as he visualized?

Edit:  I think I am going to support Jeph by supporting Jeph through merch purchases.

1.) Unsolicited Advice For The Author:

Jeph get off of Tumblr

Jeph get off of Tumblr

Jeph get off of Tumblr

Jeph get off of Tumblr

Seriously Tumblr is about the fucking worst network of any people to be involved with or on or in if you have anything bad going on in your life or if you have emotional/brain-chemical issues because even if the vast majority of the internet supports you, every shitlord in existence is there too and they have brought their own personal entourage, so it feels like you're besieged from all sides.

It's not ONLY a voice for every fucking idiot with entitlement issues who thinks their personal existence/crusade is FUCKING FASCINATING and allows them to demand respect in the shrillest, shittiest little voice possible, BUT it has the exciting anonymous ask feature, for all the fun of 4chan-style commentary on how you should kill yourself!!!!!1 WOOOOOOOO

Seriously, Tumblr is a fucking cesspool, get out of there, man.

(Doubly hilarious: when Jeph is taken to task for his fans' wrong-headed behavior! Like, for example, when a fan of QC on Tumblr said that the poster of this insipid-ass commentary, Kearsay or whatever, should be slapped and called her a whore, that was wrong! But turning around and shrieking at Jeph that YOU HAVE A FAN PROBLEM YOUR FANS ARE FUCKSHITS AND SO ARE YOU YOU ARE A BAD PERSON LIKE THEM is evidence that soooooooomeone needs to be taken off the Internet! Hint: NOT JEPH!)

2.) Things That Strike Me About This Insipid-Ass Commentary

Aside from the obvious projection and overidentification going on, and then screaming at the artist when he doesn't validate your projection and overidentification (which is just classy as FUCK), does it strike anyone else as...well...just wrong? Because it looks to me like Marigold does have a muffin-top, like clearly she's pretty pear-shaped, despite remaining attractive to our eyes? That, coupled with her skin conditions and the fact that she's been bullied her entire young adult life, is a very reasonable recipe for body dysphoria.

I'm actually reminded of an insight from earlier posts here that I disdained at the time and that I feel really bad about--we're not actually able to see how the QC chara would look in reality, not perfectly, only a stylized depiction, and we're certainly not able to see how Marigold appears to herself.

Yes, everyone is going to critique art, but there is a difference between legitimate critique of style, or perhaps bringing up in a civilized manner that "for a supposed 'fat girl', Marigold is awfully voluptuous, which I as a reader find disappointing" and this sort of absolutely unmitigated bullshit.

3.) Everyone Be Cool Now Oh Goodness Please Remain Cool

I am very disappointed to find fans of QC (on tumblr, mind) saying the poster of this insipid-ass opinion is a "whore" who should be "slapped" and exercising male privilege all over the place. Come on guys, let's be better than that. Stick to supporting Jeph and, if you can't ignore this moron and their sycophants, stick to calling them a moron and sycophants, because it's exactly what they are.

Also, I think it's a really valid point and should not be ignored that LoliBot brought up earlier: Curvy women are not better than thin women, but they are both beautiful and should be treated with equal respect. Cheesy as it sounds, it really is what's inside that counts. u 3u

Although if you have like, bodily discharge or something, um, you may wanna see a doctor.

(See, if I was on tumblr, I would be taken to task for DISCHARGE SHAMING)

I regret looking at the Tumblr comments. Some of those people have what I think of, somewhat sloppily, as a "negative IQ": they make everyone around them stupider.

It's good that Marigirl is around decent and supportive people. It would be better if they weren't so clumsy. She might crawl back into her shell in response to some faux pas by Angus or Emily.

Also, no, no, I like 4chan better because 4chan has always been a bunch of dipshits and they don't pretend to be anything else--there's a level of self-awareness there of how awful you, the anonymous person, really is for posting this incredibly unwarranted shit, and there's no hugging, there's no validation, when you fuck up.

That's really the worst part of Tumblr, is this validation bullshit atmosphere. It was born of good intentions, but it is a malignant tumor now

Yes. That's much better.

Welcome back, non-new person!

Late night, no strip, no guest strip, no status update (unless I'm somehow not getting the Twitter page to update). Growing concerned. I hope Jeph is either all right or else is doing something that benefits him.

Folks - Jeph stated that the Marigold business was not the only reason for how he feels, and Cristi said straight out on Twitter that he was ill.  So I think perhaps we should let the matter of the unhappy Internet poster drop now; there's no need to add to the unpleasantness that has erupted on Tumblr (from both points of view on the Marigold issue, in fact).  Please just talk quietly amongst yourselves while waiting for various good friends to finish up the week with guest strips.

I guess it's time for Random Comic Commentary.

And the Random button has selected:

http://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=853

Two things that I enjoyed about reading that one: the knowledge that Angus' persistance really did pay off, and noting that in the first and second frames Dora sees something that Faye does not (at least on a conscious level).

Oh, and the single coffee bean lovingly pounded into your forehead special. (edit: I guess that's three things...)

At least Faye's snark hasn't changed.

Looks like he had some PROBLEMS yesterday...   I propose we move discussion and well wishes to another thread where he might (however unlikely) see them.

Also so we can get on with the business of over-analyzing the comic.     Which is important.    That's why we're here.     :-D

I seriously hope Jeph is okay. I have had similar incidents myself, so I know how it can go. The last time I had a severe depressive episode I got blackout drunk and woke up with cigarette burns down my arm. I apparently decided to use it as an ashtray. I don't remember doing it, but I was obviously in a lot of pain when the drunk wore off.

If you read this, Jeph, just know we are all pulling for you. We support you and understand. Take all the time you need to recover physically and emotionally.

Unfortunately, the brain really needs its nicotine fix, and gives actual pain signals.  Alcohol is a good temporary pain killer, but does nothing to lessen the cravings.  Most people's brains react to this by saying, "I must not have used enough".

This is more common than you may realize.

Yeah, and I handled it better the second time around. For one thing, I limited myself to beer, preferably low in alcohol and high in hop (for its soothing properties).

This very day I'm quitting again, by the way. And yeah, I'm starting to feel the pain. And I have no alcohol: I prefer to avoid it altogether the first day.

This wasn't what I hoped to return to.

Jeph's work ethic is beyond what I can comprehend. I'd be happy to pay him to have a week off once in a while, but he probably wouldn't anyway. It seems to me that the whole thing was sort of "the last drop" and not really an important reason for his breakdown. So squeezing out the comic this last week must have been, well, really shitty. What especially makes me sad is that he'd stated somewhere that he was really looking forward to this arc, the whole Emily party thing, which is indeed an awesome setting. And now I guess he won't be able to quite enjoy it in the same way.

Beh. Fuck.

Talking about the comic is also a perfectly cromulent way to show our support for Jeph.

Is Marigold going to put the T-shirt back on? Is she going to feel like she was pushed into an embarrassing situation? How is she going to feel about Tai ogling her?

If Raven can do that with an espresso machine, what could she do with an AnthroPC?

Depression is so debilitating, and you don't realize how much it's crushing you until you start to come out of it, and I wouldn't wish it on anyone, especially not an artist who makes so many people as happy as he does.

Was it ever established anywhere that Marigold was "the fat girl"? Faye copped more fat jokes, particularly from other people, in the early days than I can recall Mari ever getting. Has anyone ever called or referred to her as 'fat', other than herself, all I've seen are boob comments? The only direct size comment I remember is Faye saying "we're basically the same size".

it's also a case of "how you say it" too.    If I had a critique for Jeph I sure as hell wouldn't present it the way the Email Asshole did.

When life gets you down and you can't wait to die
when the slightest contusion puts tears in your eyes
Here's what I do when everything goes wrong
I go out and sing a song
Oh well! At least I'm not a mole
Oh well! At least I'm not a mole - either kind
One I'm underground, totally blind
The other I'm a blemish on someone's behind
So put a smile on that long, long face... unless you're a mole, in which case I apologize for this insensitive song.

.......................................

Now back to the discussion relating to body image and the amount of extra tissue or lack thereof....
It has been already pointed out that Marbear has self-image issues.
Her earlier appearances, had her conceptualized physically as a bit more sturdy than most but able to rock a corset when the occasion arouse.
Her tendency to wear loose baggy clothing to obscure her body is something I can well relate to.
It also meshes well with her introversion mixed with laziness and maybe a bit of OCD.

<<== has battled ... okay argued at best .... with weight / image issues most of their life.
When my life takes a downer I end up swinging from fastidious organized social person to an absentminded hermit slob focused on something that takes their attention away from the real world around them [Warcraft / books / hobbies / etc].

I think that he has the artists touch to be able to characterize in a way that a majority of readers can relate to on a lot of levels.  I just hope that he can pull back and recover from all this.

I just went on a mini-archive binge from the reappearance of the espressosaur, and I really like the panel where Hanners' kick-drum leg is just going mad. Actually the whole the 1980s is really good - in 1982 I love the way Dora's face is drawn.

You know who we haven't seen in a while? Mieville. Dora could have a heart-to-heart talk with him about the Tai relationship.

So Dora talks to her pussy about girl problems?

I guess someone had to go there - would be good to see Mieville at some point once Jeph is better though.

I blame "Are You Being Served?" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vRJlItzalJY)

Poe's Law notwithstanding, you ever notice sarcasm as a mode of "criticism" is most favored among people who aren't all that good at it?

And that the best flames are written by the people who do them least?

Long ago on Usenet, one of the most friendly and level-headed people finally got provoked beyond endurance, and dashed off something that climaxed with "I will not tell you to grow up, as I fear you have already reached the peak of your development, like an egg I once smelled".

Those are the folks who believe that anything worth doing, is worth doing well. And they save up the good stuff.
I respect those people.

Man, alot of artists seem to be stabbing themselves in the hand lately. First Rich over at Order of the Stick, and now Jeph.

If I could draw, I would have totally drawn a picture of an Alot of artists (see http://hyperboleandahalf.blogspot.com/2010/04/alot-is-better-than-you-at-everything.html (http://hyperboleandahalf.blogspot.com/2010/04/alot-is-better-than-you-at-everything.html))

If the alot belongs to artists, then there's probably already a picture.

Or a painting.

Or maybe a sculpture, covered with human hair clippings...

Has no one commented on yesterday's guest comic?  Well, then I'm just going to say that, like Pintsize, I also have a cool, human penis.  :)

I do not have a cool, human penis - and if I did have a penis and it were cool, I would consulting my doctor about possible problems with my circulation :P

About the guest comic, I would say that's passive, even for Marten.
Also, I like the expression of the gal who's flipping Pintsize the double-birdie.

Marten is strangely apathetic for someone who's had their skull flayed.

If the alot belongs to artists

Oh, no, no, no, you misunderstand. The alot is MADE of artists. If you followed the previous link, you could see the Alot made of beer cans. Now, picture each of those cans being a webcomic artist instead.

Insightful, too. I miss that.

She's always been insightful. It's just that once she found the meds that worked for her, they decreased her confidence/increased her inhibitions, and she acts "younger," not so much a "contemporary." Granted, the Hannelore we've known and loved since about the time the strip count went four digits is more "adorable" than bar-bathroom Hannelore -- but that might be a (sub)conscious defense move on her part. You know, kind of like "kids are cute so we don't eat them."
