Title: QC: The Crowd-Sourced Guest Strip Edition
Post by: jwhouk on 01 Nov 2012, 05:38
I'd been toying with the idea of a "guest strip" (or two) that would be done basically by the people of the forums as a whole.

It's not like we don't have the talent - the 86 versions of the Caption Contest suggest we have enough in the way of snark and savagery that we could come up with dialogue for our beloved characters; and we have some people who have posted to the fanart thread who could do some of the sketching/drawing.

And, of course, there's "QC: Behind The Scenes" - but that's something COMPLETELY different.

So I'll put this out there as our fearless leader is recuperating: Could we put together a strip or two of QC?

Absolutely. There's enough snark and wit to come up with a basic outline for a comic, and the required artistic talent to render a visual version. Let's get some volunteers, split into two groups: Content and Artwork. If you have talent in both areas, join both. There's no reason why you couldn't.

Not to dissent, but

a) as one of the most popular webcomic artists out there he has no problem getting guest strips,

2) would he really want something from his loathed forums?  Maybe as an apology for the past, but I don't see him using it,  and

iii) we are the proverbial herd of cats.  You're not going to get agreement on jack, and certainly not in a reasonable timeframe.

That being said, I wouldn't mind giving it a go and bring proven wrong...

I'm gonna get a t-shirt made that just says "Loathed" on it.

Neat idea.

I propose we do a guest strip of Faye finally snapping and murdering everyone.   Oh wait that would have been funny yesterday.

Hmmm.   See coming up with an initial idea is the hard part this is why I don't do my own creative-thing.

This, I can work on the "Content" section. Artwork... not so much. But I love writing/ editing scripts.

And on the subject of agreeing, we could have multiple people make filler comics and then vote which ones we want to submit.

I'll try to help with both :-) I've clocked more hours sketching than I can shake a stick at (Woohoo! I found an excuse to use that phrase!). It could be really fun to see a mashup of artistic styles in one strip. I'll help to bounce some ideas around for content, but I'm a much better editor than I am writer.

Throwing out an idea:

We could do something revolving around the cast if they ever found parts of these forums. Like Marigold going on a Wikia Editing Binge, or Dora (or Faye?) doing captions, or Marten trying to discuss alt-lifestyles - or something to that effect.

And a punchline could be Hannelore reading every. Single. Post. On the FORUMS.

First panel: Hannelore asks a seated Marigold (at CoD) what she's looking at. Marigold says it's some weird forum where they talk about a webcomic.

Second panel: Dora looks over her shoulder and says something about the captions, and Marigold does something with the Wiki.

Third panel: Faye is looking over Dora's shoulder - "No, no, that's not funny enough." She ends up coming up with about three captions (we could go meta and use the "I'm his friend" panel from Gabby's snide comments in 2249).

Fourth panel: Marten, shown the forums by Faye, reads the BAND subforum and gets into a discussion with Patrick about guitars - and sees that Hannelore is logged in as the "latest member." "What - she's already got 1,000 posts? What's she doing?"

Last panel: Hannelore, red-eyed and frazzled - "Must. Read. All. Posts."

Someone wanna flesh that out a bit and get some sketches together?

I'll do the dialog for the first one.

(Hanners has been sweeping the floor, she is holding a broom.   She is looking over Marigold's shoulder)

MARIGOLD:   *looking annoyed*

HANNERS:  I'm sorry,  I was just wondering what you are reading that's all.

Marigold:   Just reading the  discussion forums for my favorite webcomic  Controversial Furnishings.

Second Panel (And I'm veering off script a little here)

Dora: *Looking at her own computer* You know Marigold, I like the comic and all but it is eerily similar to something... I just can't quite put my finger on it...

Marigold: *Ignoring her while typing heatedly* NO! Tannelor is the shy, nervous daughter of the PRESIDENT, not a billionaire philanthropist! And nothing suggests that she has any romantic interest in that dweeb Marven!

Post by: Carl-E on 01 Nov 2012, 23:26
I'll be honest, I don't really like it.  Aside from the in-jokes, it's... too busy.  To get these, you'll need screen shots (for the caption game) in addition to the characters interacting with the forum and each other.  We need a one-off, not an arc!

I think the answer is to stick to a main joke, and keep it simple.  I submit, for your considerations, the following changes;

Keep panel 1 and 2 as is (well, a little editing is probably in order.  Later.)

Scrap the caption contest thing in 3.  Instead, have Marten looking over Dora's shoulder, saying "Hey, I've seen that one.  It's that slice-of-life comic about a guy and his anthro PC".

Dora: "Yeah, but the forums - they're a real piece of work!  These people take it WAYYY too seriously!"

Across the counter, Mari (or both Mari and Marten, or all three) recognizes Hanners, who disappeared after panel 1.  The line  "How can she already have over 1,000 posts? She just registered!" works well with the joke reveal in the 4th panel of the frazzled Hanners.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Some minor edits; make the title "Controversial Ingredients" (better match with "Content")
Cut "off-planet" in panel 2, and spell it "Marven".
Title: Re: QC: The Crowd-Sourced Guest Strip Edition
Post by: DSL on 02 Nov 2012, 03:00
Exactly. Keep it simple and tighten the dialog; today's guest strip does wonderfully well in that regard. (Also note the attention to character traits in the guest strip; if anyone would be passive and blase about ... that ... it would be our skinny indie TEH hero.)
So: Panel 1.
INT CoD. Hanners with broom, Marigold seated at table hunched over netbook. Hanners is peering wide-eyed over Marigold's shoulder, Marigold is hunched over netbook, looking annoyed at interruption/intrusion.
HANNERS: Whatcha readin'?
MARIGOLD: It's just ... it's just my favorite webcomic, "Sketchy Stuff."*
*Sorry. I like puns and punchy dialog.
See, this is what I like about the crowd-sourcing. We get to collectively make a funny comic.
And Carl-E's idea for the different wording in panel three works a LOT better.
An interesting idea might be to set the comic they're reading in a universe WITHOUT robots and private space stations and such. As in, our universe. Although, that's getting awfully close to fourth-wall breakage.
Title: Re: QC: The Crowd-Sourced Guest Strip Edition
Post by: Mr_Rose on 02 Nov 2012, 08:20
Nono, that's the sixth wall when the comic characters start reading about real life in a meta-comic.
 (the fifth wall is She-Hulk's and Deadpool's common power that doesn't actually exist probably)
Alright, edits made...
See, this is what I like about the crowd-sourcing. We get to collectively make a funny comic.
And Carl-E's idea for the different wording in panel three works a LOT better.
I have to agree, we also have to remember (in addition to getting the personalities right) that the comic has to flow, and while non-sequesters might be funny, all of the funny is combined to each panel separately. I don't think we're all humorous enough to make a single panel funny, so we should build to the final punchline (That Hanners panel).
FIRST PANEL
[HANNELORE is holding a broom, looking over MARIGOLD's shoulder; MARIGOLD is typing away on her netbook]
HANNELORE: "Whatcha reading?"
MARIGOLD (looking slightly annoyed at the interruption): "It's just… just my favorite webcomic, Controversial Stuff."
SECOND PANEL
[DORA is standing by the front register, looking at her own laptop, while FAYE (or RAVEN?) is looking off-screen at MARIGOLD]
DORA: "You know, I like the comic and all, but it seems strangely familiar. Can't quite put my finger on it."
MARIGOLD (off-screen speech bubble): "NO! Tannelor is the shy, nervous daughter of the PRESIDENT, not a billionaire philanthropist! (clicking noises as she's typing) And there is NOTHING to suggest she has any romantic interest in that dweeb Marven!"
<-- NOTE: We could come up with our own "SPECIALS" on the board behind Dora here. Just saying. -->
THIRD PANEL
[MARTEN is looking at the webcomic on HIS laptop, back at his apartment, as FAYE looks on over his shoulder]
MARTEN: "Oh, yeah, that's the slice-of-life comic about a guy and his pet tarantula."
FAYE: "Yeah, but the forums – they're a real piece of work. These people take it WAYYY too seriously!"
FOURTH PANEL
Frame One
[Back at COD; DORA is looking around as MARIGOLD is closing up her netbook]
DORA: "Where did Hannelore go?"
MARIGOLD: "She was just here a minute ago. I was showing her the discussion threads in the comic's forum."
Frame Two
[Back at MARTEN and FAYE's apartment; they're still looking at his laptop]
MARTEN: "Hey, it looks like Hannelore registered to post on here."
FAYE (looking down): "But that's crazy! How can she already have over a thousand posts?"
FIFTH PANEL
[HANNELORE is sitting in front of her computer, eyes bloodshot, hair unkempt]
HANNELORE (whispering to herself): "Must. Read. All. Posts."
MARTEN: "Oh, yeah, that's the slice-of-life comic about a guy and his pet tarantula."
FAYE: "Yeah, but the forums – they're a real piece of work. These people take it WAYYY too seriously!"
I'd suggest a change here - it doesn't quite flow realistically from the previous panels. Perhaps:
MARTEN: "Dora just sent me a link to this slice-of-life comic about a guy and his pet tarantula."
FAYE: "Yeah, me too. Have you seen the forums? These people take the internet WAY too seriously!"
Oh, and in homage to another of my favourite webcomic artists (http://hyperboleandahalf.blogspot.co.uk/2010/06/this-is-why-ill-never-be-adult.html), I'd change Hannelore's line to "Read ALL the posts!".
I like it! I really like the idea of having different people do different frames if we have enough possible contributors, that would be awesome. We'd have to have continuity of outfit or something to make people recognisible. Maybe put each character in their iconic outfit - I'd suggest TEH for Marten, the bearmonster for Faye, and no idea on the others.
For Hanners, it's a turquoise T-shirt and tan pants, maybe khakis.
For Marigold, it's usually a black T-shirt with a slogan and, most often, purple pants, maybe sweats or jeans.
And I also like the idea of a different artist for each panel.
Considering why we're doing this, I don't think I'm a fan of that last special.
Ah, yes. Very good point! Got inside Faye's head too much there and it led to a little bit of a Fight Club moment.
ETA: DSL- nice job!
Originally, I liked the idea of multiple artistic styles per strip but I think that with the content we have it would be too complicated. Perhaps if this goes well and we decide on Guest Strip #2, we can do something where each panel is similar/the same and only the text changes. That might lend itself better to a number of style changes.
Like the caption contests...
DSL, I... I didn't realize.  I've known your work for quite a while!
As for panel 3b, you lose the joke of 1000 posts for a n00b, and I think that's an indication of Hanner's obsessive character.  I also liked the simultaneous realization at both ends of the QCverse that Hanners had disappeared/reappeared.
Maybe a shifting of some of the dialogue would work - tightening it up a bit without losing or weakening the gag.
Let me think on it a bit... gotta finish making dinner first, I'll check back in later.
I put a new version of the script up on Scribd, with a "tightening" of the dialogue in the fourth panel:
http://www.scribd.com/doc/111955251/QC-Crowdsourcing
Quote
FOURTH PANEL
Frame One
[Back at COD; DORA is looking around as MARIGOLD is closing up her netbook]
DORA: "Where did Hannelore go?"
MARIGOLD: "She was just here a minute ago. I was showing her the discussion threads inthe comic's forum."
Frame Two
[Back at MARTEN and FAYE's apartment; they're still looking at his laptop]
MARTEN: "Is that Hannelore registered to post on here?"
FAYE (looking down): "What? How can she already have over a thousand posts?"
I still like the idea of ending with Hannelore staring into the computer (Read. ALL. The. Posts) maybe with Winslow in the corner of the panel looking on in (horror? concern? bafflement?)
Also, I bluelined the second panel and added it to my flickr set here. (http://flic.kr/s/aHsjCGKd8B)
Title: Re: QC: The Crowd-Sourced Guest Strip Edition
I actually had a line of dialogue like, "I get worried about you." I don't do a good Winslow dialogue.
However, his look of  horror from the "Mister Peepers? NOOOOO!" strip might be funny as an add-in.
DSL: I like the perspective in that second panel!
Winslow, on the back of the couch, looking over Hannelore's shoulder, simply says "Are you okay?"
Hoping to hew closely to QC, I did a dictionary search, and posting some likelies might start creative juices flowing in this direction. Or not. Here goes:
contaminated questions
contemptible questions
contemplative questions
contentious questions
incontinent questions
contradictory questions
contrary questions
contrived questions
contumacious quesadillas
contentious quesadillas
questionably contentious? Is there a copyright issue?
I'm sort of fond of quesadillas, cheese-filled tortillas. Isn't that what this creative exercise is all about?
(I can't stop adding to this)
And yes, I do plan to sketch the other panels now; I'm too "into" this to stop short.
I'm with Redball on this one- I really like the idea of it being "QC". Hmmmm....
Quotable Characters
Quizzical Creatures
Quarrels & Contradictions
Quiet Cannibalism
Qualms & Caffeine
Quite A Calamity
Quips & Chortles
Quilting with Chutzpah
Quickly Clamoring
Quantifiable Concerns
Quinoa & Chorizo
Quarts of Cephalopods
Quirky Carcasses
Ok, I think that might be my cue to stop now.
Gnomes, that IS nice to know ... thanks. But I wonder where they get them; I've never had any huge national distribution yet.
The internet, I'm guessing.
Quaintly Consequential gives it an air of not being that interesting or important... if we were going for an ironic title, I guess that would work. Personally, I'm leaning towards "Incontinent Questions" myself...
I think we're practically almost there. The idea of adding in Pintsize in that third panel is GENIUS - and I really like his response!
I do think Hanners should be a little more "normal" looking in panel 1 - to differentiate her from the last panel.
Agreed on Hanners' hair -- though I suspect it hasn't known a comb much since those early days.
Not quite happy with my version of Marigold; my mental picture of her is of a girl who would be considered "cute" by 99 percent of Westerners, except for herself.
Hope I'm not too late...
A proposal for a tweak to Panel 5:
Instead of having Winslow asking Hanners "Are you all right?" he should have a zombie-eyed look on his face and gently emit smoke as Hannelore furiously types or clicks on a keyboard that's plugged into him.
That eliminates his line, and besides HE'S A ROBOT! ...
What do you think, sirs?
Title: Re: QC: The Crowd-Sourced Guest Strip Edition
Post by: DSL on 05 Nov 2012, 16:43
I like the thought ... but in line with the earlier story about Winslow's jealousy over H. using "that other computer" replaced by his desire to not have 4GB (or however big that thumb drive was) worth of sexy firefighter GIFs, and combined with the AnPCs' supposed role as companions and sometimes caregivers -- my "I worry about you" tweak is starting to REALLY grow on me.
I expect y'all will have it hashed out by the time I get to  Panel 5.
ah. seeing on your flickr how you've got it laid out, it makes sense
Having only read the scribd script, I was shooting for a less conversational feeling for the last panel to oppose the dialogue-ish rest of it... but giving Winslow the tag at the end makes perfect sense
QUESTIONABLE CONTENT GUEST STRIP
#2KXX – CROWD SOURCING
FIRST PANEL
[HANNELORE is holding a broom, looking over MARIGOLD's shoulder; MARIGOLD is typing away on her netbook at a table. DORA and RAVEN are behind the counter, looking on]
HANNELORE: "Whatcha reading?"
MARIGOLD (looking slightly annoyed at the interruption): "It's just… just my favorite webcomic, Quantifiable Concerns."
[SPECIALS on the board behind RAVEN and DORA:
* spathe ham
* fish heads
* un-shelled walnut muffins
* a kick in the shins
There is a note on the cash register: "Free holopony with purchase of banana smoothie"
]
SECOND PANEL
[DORA is standing by the front register, looking at her own laptop, while RAVEN is looking off-screen at MARIGOLD]
DORA: "You know, I like the comic and all, but it seems strangely familiar. Can't quite put my finger on it."
MARIGOLD (off-screen speech bubble): "NO! Tannelor is the shy, nervous daughter of the PRESIDENT, not a billionaire philanthropist! (clicking noises as she's typing) And there is NOTHING to suggest she has any romantic interest in that dweeb Marven!"
THIRD PANEL
[MARTEN is looking at the webcomic on HIS laptop, back at his apartment, as FAYE looks on over his shoulder; PINTSIZE is sitting next to MARTEN on the couch]
MARTEN: "Dora just sent me a link to this slice-of-life comic about a guy and his pet tarantula."
FAYE: "Yeah, me too. Have you seen the forums? These people take the internet WAYYY too seriously!"
PINTSIZE (looking dejected): "She didn't send ME a link."
FOURTH PANEL
Frame One
[Back at COD; DORA is looking around as MARIGOLD is closing up her netbook]
DORA: "Where did Hannelore go?"
MARIGOLD: "She was just here a minute ago. I was showing her the discussion threads in the comic's forum."
Frame Two
[Back at MARTEN and FAYE's apartment; they're still looking at his laptop]
MARTEN: "Is that Hannelore registered to post on here?"
FAYE (looking down): "What? How can she already have over a thousand posts?"
FIFTH PANEL
[HANNELORE is sitting in front of her computer, eyes bloodshot, hair unkempt; WINSLOW is on the back of her couch, looking at her]
HANNELORE (to herself): "Must. Read. ALL. The. Posts."
WINSLOW (to HANNELORE): "I worry about you."
By the way - Jeph uses Blambot Casual for his speech bubbles, if we want to go "realistic".
(EDIT: Updated the line for Pintsize in Panel 3)
Doing some screencapping and using Blambot, I've got a pretty good fix on how the comic would look.
An idea for panel 1: The specials don't have to be completely visible. The "Holopony with purchase" line can go in the area between Hannelore's broom and Dora. (By the way - I saw Tai's autograph on Marigold's netbook. GENIUS!)
For panel 2: Would it be subtle-funny if the colors of the website (on the screen of Dora's laptop) were Black on PINK?
For panel 3: I have no clue as to what font Pintsize "speaks" in.
Panel 4: Maybe as a joke, don't do an actual "divider" between the two frames, just a sketched line.
Panel 5: Gotta use Chicago font (or MacSys) for Winslow. Otherwise FANTASTIC.
Hi, I know the script says final, but there are a couple of little things bugging me.  May I suggest the following tweaks?
The first may not work... Marigold's forum rant should be in a box, maybe a courier type of font, indicating it's being typed, not spoken out loud?  (now that I've said it, it doesn't sound like it'll work.  Never mind.)
Faye's line in panel 3 somehow changed to "take the internet way too seriously", I think the original "Take the comic way too seriously" worked better (Seriously, that's what we're here for, right?)
Marten's line in panel 4 frame 2 just sounds a little clunky.  How about  "Look, Hannelore just started posting on the forum" or "Hey, is that Hannelore posting here?"
Ultimately, it's in DSL's hands when he does the lettering, and I trust him to make any final changes he sees fit, but I thought I'd get these off my chest.
Re: jwhouk's and Carl-E's comments:
Points taken, jw. Not sure about Pintsize's font at all, but what else could Winslow speak in but Chicago (or its near-cousin, Charcoal?). I'm going to hand-letter the humans' speech, though. I like the look of a hand-lettered speech bubble and it's served me well over the years. As for the specials: Hannelore's elbow hides part of the word "shins" just enough so you can see what it's supposed to be and probably is, but the reader's imagination is free to go elsewhere. I call it "Rorschaching" a cartoon and it used to drive the forum commenters at my old paper even more batshit than they already were -- they loved a conspiracy but resented having to come up with one on their own.
Carl-E, I will incorporate your second and third points. I think the reason your first point might not take is that it's not certain Marigold is typing her response or speaking to Hannelore. That, and font-speech (in my mind, anyway) is used mainly to differentiate AI-speech from meatspeech in QCVerse.
This is fun.
Considering the usage and context, Marigold's line won't work as a forum post, but I can see what you were getting at.
Faye's line in panel 3 somehow changed to "take the internet way too seriously", I think the original "Take the comic way too seriously" worked better (Seriously, that's what we're here for, right?)
Marten's line in panel 4 frame 2 just sounds a little clunky.  How about  "Look, Hannelore just started posting on the forum" or "Hey, is that Hannelore posting here?"
These two make more sense. Considering the flame wars of old, and the over-analysis of now... yeah, we do have a kind of strange fixation on QC. The adjustment to Faye's line works; it's short and to the point. Pintsize's font... the closest I've seen is LilyUPC, but there are differences (I was comparing from the font used in comic #1337 (for obvious reasons)).
One other thing hit me as I lay down last night, part of the "Les Ismore" school of thought...
Mari's post in pnel two - cut the billionaire philanthropist.
"NO! Tannelor is the shy, nervous daughter of the PRESIDENT, there is NOTHING to suggest she has any romantic interest in that dweeb Marven!"
Mainly for space (it would be the biggest of bubbles) but it also to drive home the similarity without using an 8-lb sledge.
I know I was pessimistic, but damn - I'm getting excited about this!
There was also a point when, mainly through newsposts, he experimented with the font - I think it was after a computer change where he lost the old font.  he may well have gone back to the old one, though - I don't recall.
There was all the hubbub over Momo's font change with the new chassis, there may be something in those threads about the actual font used.
Good edit, but for the sake of Grammar I would make it two sentences and add an "and."
So it would look like:
It is actually just old fashioned. English standard (as determined by someone somewhere teaching things) just allowed you to start sentences with the words "And" or "But." Apparently teachers complained about run on sentences long enough that they changed the policy.  :roll:
Personally, I would leave Carl-E's sentence as it is, but use a semicolon after PRESIDENT rather than a comma.  It is then correct, idiomatic, and old-fashioned all at once.  And there is absolutely no reason not to start a sentence with a conjunction!
@jephjacques Your humble fans at the forums have come up with a guest strip, if you wish to use it: http://www.flickr.com/photos/84624968@N06/sets/72157631952251557/ …
A note: I am completely fine if he decides not to use the strip. It is, after all, his comic. I would just hope that he realizes how much his fanbase really does enjoy his work - and that it takes so bleepin' many of us just to come up with a comic he shoots off in a relatively short period of time.
Next thing to do is for me to stack the high-rezzes together and add the tag. I believe Jeph likes dot-png files? And what e-mail address do I use?
And yes, if we take anything away from this, it ought to be an appreciation for what goes into making each day's strip.
Jeph's said on Twitter and Tumblr that there's no waking moment he's not thinking at least a little about the strip and I can identify with that. I can also identify with his reluctance to let others influence the story and the characters, even as he appreciates the guest strips. It's his BABY. I know the feeling.
From the handful of times I watched the stream, I know a regular strip (no new backgrounds or characters, etc.) takes a minumum of two hours to produce, AFTER the scripting, and that's with no interruptions (which is probably one of the reasons he works at oh-f**k-thirty in the morning, Eastern US Time).  I was taking about an hour and a half for each panel, not counting numerous interruptions (Family stuff, paying work, errands, and this guy with what looked like a Tesla coil, who wouldn't go away ... )
I can also appreciate the fact that Jeph is hugely self-taught and has, in fact, been inventing not only the strip but the way he draws it, as he goes along. I'm also largely self-taught, though there are one or two teachers way back when I wish I'd listened a little more closely to.
Speaking of learning, I don't mind saying that, even though I've been drawing for publication for about as long as Jeph has been alive, I've learned a few things about working in Photoshop by watching the livestream of Jeph drawing the comic. If you haven't watched a stream, do it; it's fascinating. He "builds" the comic as much as he draws it.
That's the kind of world we're in technologically, folks: We're all learning from and teaching one another and working out new stuff for ourselves.
If anyone's interested, the final panels of this guestravaganza were produced in Photoshop Elements, using an ancient Wacom Graphire tablet attached to a less-ancient MacBook. The rough panels were produced in SketchBook Pro on a first-generation iPad, the one I use for my editorial cartoons.
Though I'm ready to declare this done if  y'all are, I'm going to go back one more time to the discussion of the off-panel dialogue in Panel 2; it could stand being a little less of a word-wall and there were some good thoughts there.
This was fun.
The devil may be in the details, but so are most of the "in" jokes!
I just don't have words for how wonderful it is to see this.  I've served on so many committees that got nothing done.  Which is why...
Not to dissent, but
a) as one of the most popular webcomic artists out there he has no problem getting guest strips,
2) would he really want something from his loathed forums?  Maybe as an apology for the past, but I don't see him using it,  and
iii) we are the proverbial herd of cats.  You're not going to get agreement on jack, and certainly not in a reasonable timeframe.
That being said, I wouldn't mind giving it a go and bring proven wrong...
I hereby rescind and formally apologize for this post.
And there you are, being proven wrong and not minding. :)
Whether it makes it to the site or not is for time to find out. But whether it does or doesn't, I like to think that he'd appreciate the sentiment, nonetheless.
DSL: not to make more work for you, but...
I've been intending to make a donation to help defray his costs from this incident (at http://tinyurl.com/QCDonation), but then something occurred to me...
What would be the feasibility of doing prints of this strip and giving them out for people donating to the site for purposes of helping out with his surgery/copays/etc?
I'm totally fine if the answer is "waay too much work and of dubious legality and [insert concern here]", and I intend to donate anyway, but do you have any experience doing stuff like this?
Also, you seem to be in communication with Jeph and might have a sense of how well it would be received...
Legality is the concern, first last and always ... and if I were Jeph's lawyer (I'm not anyone's lawyer) I 'd advise him to tell us NO just to establish a precedent/maintain a pattern of protecting his copyright.
But to do something that doesn't involve his or anyone else's characters -- or just passing the hat -- I'd support that.
I did this just for fun with the understanding that this would remain a forum-project with a SLIGHT CHANCE of Jeph "publishing" it as a guest strip.
The fact that he may indeed publish it is double-fucking fantastic.
I wouldn't dare ask for more, such as the right to sell the work...  I'm satisfied with "might publish"
Stick with the traditional donation methods and let this project stand alone as an achievement unto itself.
Speaking only as a minor supporter of this process, it wouldn't bother me a bit if this went into his guest strip bank.
It also wouldn't bother me if he used guest strips more often to give himself brain breaks (you don't need to have a trip planned to take a vacation).
That said, from the outside his process seems so tied to walking the tightrope of constant unrelenting output that I wouldn't want him to bust up his productivity cycle either.
I wish him success in finding whatever works.
So despite any objections, the support he lent is inarguable and should be credited.
Throwing out an idea:
We could do something revolving around the cast if they ever found parts of these forums. Like Marigold going on a Wikia Editing Binge, or Dora (or Faye?) doing captions, or Marten trying to discuss alt-lifestyles - or something to that effect.
And a punchline could be Hannelore reading every. Single. Post. On the FORUMS.
Modest he may wish to be, but that contribution is very recognisable in the final result, and should be credited.
I came here to say pretty much the same thing. I immediately recognised it as the crowdsourced comic - and I have to say that it is definitely right up there among the other guest comics in entertainment value. Bravo to all concerned!
I don't think I have to stretch it too far to say that this may very well be this Forum's CMoA.
And to Paul, IICIH, est and the rest of the moderator team - I'm sorry about all the new forum registrations. I really didn't expect this kind of response.
One of the "unexpected outcomes" - not surprising, but none of us thought about that particular effect!
So long as we maintain the usual atmosphere around here, greet the newcomers appropriately, and remind them of those sticky threads, it shouldn't be a problem!
There is nothing so fulfilling to a fan as when the creator acknowledges them and thanks them through use of fandom. Nicely done, brethren. ^_^
IMHO, it doubles as a CMoH, but YMMV.
Like others said, I didn't notice this was at works until it was done, but reading through this thread was quite moving. Well played, folks.
So lets throw out there...  an idea.
We had a great time working up a filler comic for Jeph, yes?
What about starting the NEXT one.
Jeph goes to cons, takes vacations, needs downtime
How about we bounce around some ideas, see what sticks and prepare another guest strip and keep it on standby.
Thoughts?
Unless there is a long break, I think we can rely on other comic creators to make fillers for us. It was great of the man to publish this one, let's not get too pushy with the writing.
The forum rose to the occasion; this was remarkable enough, without trying to repeat the exercise on spec.
It would be quite fun to script another comic some time, but maybe a bit of an ask for DSL to draw it again when there's no occasion calling for it.
And I'll defer to my elders, but the quality of art and script was as good or better than most. On the other hand, I'm sure that exchanging guest strips with other artists is important to Jeph. If asked about another one-off, he might say "go for it."
Title: Re: QC: The Crowd-Sourced Guest Strip Edition
Post by: pwhodges on 13 Nov 2012, 05:43
Hey, I'm not your elder!  (I don't get to say that very often...)
I wasn't thinking that the quality might be hard to replicate, but rather that the achievement of herding cats might.
Title: Re: QC: The Crowd-Sourced Guest Strip Edition
Post by: Bluesummers on 13 Nov 2012, 06:14
I think our "cat herding" came naturally...I understand it's not easy to come to a consensus on a project, especially with no parliamentary procedure, but I think we really outshined ourselves. ...Outshone? Outshane? Hmm...
Perhapsibly a revolving filler comic workshop [sticky] thread could be set up in MAKE (http://forums.questionablecontent.net/index.php/board,14.0.html), and contributors could pop in from time to time, since there's no dire need right at this moment.
Title: Re: QC: The Crowd-Sourced Guest Strip Edition
Post by: jwhouk on 13 Nov 2012, 06:34
I honestly believe this was a one-time deal on our part. The concept had been there for a while, but I don't think there's a need for it in the immediate future.
QC is unique in its stature that Jeph does interact with his fanbase (though not as much as some other webcomic artists). He has also had fan-related strips done in the past (witness that alternate dialogue strip that was featured in Volume 3, between Marten and Tai).
Title: Re: QC: The Crowd-Sourced Guest Strip Edition
Post by: lepetitfromage on 13 Nov 2012, 06:49
I like the idea of it going into MAKE as well.  I think if we did something there, it would be more for fun and less about the fact that it was planned to be a "guest strip". Could we call it something else? I think I'm just more curious to see what else we can come up with- it was awesome to see DSL's art and I'd love to have the chance to see the work of others.
Perhaps we could entertain the idea of multiple artists? The fact that it wouldn't need to be up at any specific point in time might help those of us who want to contribute but can't dedicate as much time as DSL did for the last strip. I know that I could probably work on something for an hour or so every few days. Plus, we'd have more time to flesh out a script that would lend itself more to varying artistic styles (aka a strip in which the character positions and environment don't change drastically but still allow for interesting dialogue).
Another idea.....
Maybe we could poll for scenarios to illustrate and have a thread that is dedicated to those specific drawings/scenarios? Could give those interested in script writing a little piece of action and quench the thirst of those that want something to draw. I know that I'm much more likely to be creative if I give myself some sort of "assignment". Maybe a bi-weekly (or even monthly) QC Fanart Challenge?
I'd be up for an art challenge. My art is okay, I think, but I'm very slow so I wouldn't be good at guest-strips needed now.
Let's not push, and make a good thing into a monster. I like the art challenge idea in MAKE or maybe the fanart thread, and there's certainly enough art talent on these boards -- and Jeph will need guest strips, I imagine, during con travels. As has been said, though, the webcomickers tend to take care of each other.
That said ... I do confess to having written a couple the other day. I even remember one of them. If events in the strip don't supersede it by the time the next call for guest strips comes around ...?
While I'm proud to be listed at the bottom of "our" QC - amazing the credit you can get for one post - I do agree that it was a one-time thing. Remember, the spark for all this wasn't showing ourselves off, it was because of concern and care for the guy whose comic brought everyone here. We can't send chicken soup over the Interwebs so we did a comic. A second version, while a fun exercise, wouldn't have the same emotional impact.
As for other webcomic artists filling in, I think it's a good thing - I've actually started reading webcomics (including this one!) because of guest appearances in other folks' work.
That's right - I came here because of Butts Disease.
I agree with you here. This forum-made guest strip was out of our concern to Jeph. We wanted to show that we truly supported and appreciated his work, art and talent, and the result was a mighty impressive success. As for more? Officially no. Like you got there, webcomickers got each others' backs, and well, we can hope that nothing so drastic occurs in the future (trolls will always abound those dark tunnels called the Internet, though)...
A dedicated thread would be a nice place to play, though. And who knows, Jeph may pick the cream of the crop out sometimes and post it up somewhere (probably not the QC main page, but still). I also had an idea for a storyline while this was taking shape... Might put some details together and post it there if it does come to fruition.
You really want to use your one free kill on me? That's not very economically sound...besides, if you immediately understood that it's a dbz reference, then you can't cast the first stone. XD
I had to say it. It's the first of two things that came to mind...the other was "Now, KISS!"
