Title: The re-introduction thread
Post by: Thrillho on 26 Nov 2012, 15:13
Hi folks.

So there's a forum for introducing ourselves on here.

But the thing is... some of us have been here a while, and things have changed.

When I joined this forum in 2005 (within days of our very own Patrick) I went by the online moniker of DynamiteKid. He was a wrestler in the 80s, a frequently acknowledged cunt of the highest order, and I certainly was a cunt even if most people didn't realise.

I'm not DynamiteKid any more. A lot's changed in seven years. So I asked hodges to change my name just to Gareth, in the same way as Pat used to be KimJongSick and is now just Patrick.

So this is the re-introduction thread. Sorry if it takes up too much space.

My name is Gareth. I'm 24. I live in England. I am obsessed with music, and I am in the early stages of going through an amicable but heartbreaking divorce.

I work at a college in the student services department, a job I actually adore but that I get paid SHIT for when you consider my responsibilities and workload.

A couple of you I already know pretty well (Pat, obviously, and neko). But who is everybody else? What's your deal, yo?

This seems like a not bad idea given (what feels to me anyways) as an influx of new people.

My name is Kat. I am married to Ackblom12 (Stephen) and we have a non-monogamous relationship.  I feel sometimes like new people don't know that and are at a disadvantage somehow in understanding what is going on.
here we are:

I am in graduate school in Michigan studying "Information Science" to be a librarian or archivist or records manager or something.  I like to bake and sew, and get drunk and argue.

When I registered here four and a half years ago, I was clearly even more of an oddball than I am now.  I built up people's knowledge of me by posting black-and-white photos of myself as a child, to the extent that at one point I was accused of being someone else's spoof account!  Then I had a period as people's favourite uncle or substitute father-figure.  Then somehow it fell to me to sort out the comic forum when the existing moderators couldn't face it; and now, by default as a result of other people moving along, here I am.  But all the time, I've just been me really.  What you see is what you get, and I don't have a different personality in real life from that which I let you see here.

Though I don't think my wife realises that I actually moderate an Internet forum...  My time with her is too precious (and too full) to waste with such trivia.

was rejected pretty hard because of it. I can understand that; I'm still pretty hurt that I was called a liar repeatedly, though,

That wouldn't happen now, I hope and believe.  I'm sure that those of us who remember that period have nothing but admiration for the way that you stood up to your treatment at that time.  Certainly I have; it showed a considerable inner strength.

I don't think I was around here at the time and if things like that were going on, I'm glad I wasn't.

I'm Paul, and I signed onto the forum right in the middle of the break-up arc....so many replies.....

I'm 27, I'm Irish, grew up outside of Cork City, where I live now. Not much to be said about growing up. Studied Applied Science and Quality Assurance in college, and looking to go back to next year and study Literature. Amateur cook and writer seems to sum up the rest of me, oh...and a love of reading and horror films that borders on the obsessive...

TheEvilDog was a nickname I've had since school (There were only 6 of us that took German, so the teacher gave us nicknames, I was "Paulus, you evil dog." The latter of which stuck for several years. Most people tend to call me Evil, although most just use it in an ironic manner, as I am not at all evil...I hope..

Not too much more to say. Then again, I've never really been one for long replies. I always seem to lose the point halfway through.

Wow, February of '09 for me. I wandered in during the introduction of Cosette, and the famous "CARNALLY. ON A REGULAR BASIS." quote.

I kinda ended up here because BLC shut down their forums, and I was a bit put off by the stuff going on with Halfpixel (Kurtz and Straub and company). The comic just kinda ended up being one of my main reads after a while.

I can't speak for Paul and some of the other "older" individuals, but I do see the comic as a way of keeping up with "modern life" - trying to understand people who are much younger than me (including Jeph).

That and the comments in the strip were just too funny.

As mentioned, I'm 29, male, married to Kat and we happen to be poly. I've been around since 2005 or so and typically just ramble on about schlocky horror films (which I currently have a thread for), video games and body modification.

I joined in 2010 when they fixed the forum signup after the breakup arc. I had been lurking around for a while beforehand.

I'm a 25 year old from the chicago area. I don't post as prolifically as everyone else but I'm usually lurking around. TRVA is a condensed version of my highschool screen name.

Post by: nekowafer on 26 Nov 2012, 19:46
I'm neko/nekowafer/Kat/Elesia/"hey you with the pants". I am a cat furry and a high school friend came up with the nickname. Then I was called either neko or Kat because my real name is mostly impossible to pronounce properly.

I came here to waste some time while at work, because I had (and still have) a very boring desk job. I almost typed "sex job". You'll most often see me in the threads where we talk about our problems because I have a lot of them and I am very vocal about them. Also Der Tattoo Thread and anything to do with sex/polyamory/gender/etc because it interests me.

I also like music.

And Unicorn, I'm so glad you posted here, because I wouldn't have recognized you for a little while and I'd be all confused.

Edit: oh yeah I decided to re-introduce myself even though Gaz already mentioned me because I assume new people will read this thread.

Now I'm super tempted to delete my posts in this thread, and then change my avatar/signature.
Title: Re: The re-introduction thread
Post by: Carl-E on 26 Nov 2012, 20:15
True, dat.  I caught the change in avatar, and I knew you called yourself unicorn IRL, but it probably would've taken me a few days...

I'm Carl, Dr. Carl to my students, because my last name's tough.  My wife uset to call me Carl-E (or Carlie?) as a term of endearment, so I use it online.  You'll see me in comment threads of other webcomics sometimes... I've never posted my last name anywhere, in any of the forums I've participated in (only two or three others).  I've always been deathly afraid of a student finding me out through a websearch.  If a student's on here already and recognizes me, that's cool - but I like to keep my webpresence anonymous.

I joined in August '09, just before the registration system quit working - I think I was one of the last ones in until the breakup arc.

I was working away from home at the time, and this place quickly became the social interaction that I was sorely missing.  Soon after that, you guys saw me through several of the toughest events of my life.  It was a place to vent, and escape.  I stayed in the comic area for well over a year, then started exploring the "lower threads".  I really liked what I found, even more than in the comic section.

I spend way to much time in here.  And I think of many of you as my friends, and wish (and hope) to meet some of you someday.

Then I remember my privacy paranoia... and realize it will probably never happen

And I love food inordinately much...

Oh and fair warning, if you mention anything about sex (especially kink) or body modification, be prepared for an answer, or rebuttal if necessary, from myself. I am pretty blunt and not shy at all about the subjects and will go into detail.

Neko, when you joined I called you Bizzaro me for a while.  Names, piercings, pet choices..I felt like for the first few months every week you said something new that made me squint my eyes and go "is someone taking the piss..."

Though as time went on I learned enough about you that it was clear we were the same person from different universes.

My name is Fat Mike and I'm obsessed with big lesbians... wait...

I'm Jace. I was PantsFTW and then I grew up and realized that name was dumb and I should go by Jace. Which is my name but not really. It is a nickname, but been goin by it since 2nd grade.
I'm 23 now, I am in my 3rd semester of college for mathematics. I paint miniatures. Sometimes I paint canvasses. I do Dagorhir, its like a LARP but no one roleplays and we just hit each other and then drink or sleep. I also do the SCA, its like Dagorhir but with more pomp and wooden sticks instead of foam covered sticks. My buddy who got me into SCA makes armor and I'm learning how to make armor from him. Everything I wear except my helmet and chain was made by him and me. Here's a picture of me in some of my armor:

You better believe that you're seeing a velvet coat of plates on over that chain. Damn that is sexy. Oh and the period shoes too! Beautiful 14th century kit just coming together.
Sometimes I do a middle eastern thing too and when it is windy I get awesome pictures:

ollaH!

I started reading QC in summer 2010 and I think I began to check out the forums in early 2011. I can't remember the specifics as it was a pretty bleak time for me after several nervous breakdowns and a breakup. At the same time I started to go to therapy for anxiety disorder and depression and started to get my social life together a bit and begin to start making music in a band in earnest, mostly to help me deal with my mental stuff.
I´m stuck in my head pretty much all of the time.
I think I come off as somewhat stern, earnest and maybe a bit stuffy but I´ve come to think it´s just the way the males in my family are and I´m already the screwball among them.
You should have met my paternal grandad. I don't think he ever cracked a smile.

Soo, yeah, I´m from Cologne, Germany, 26 (holy fuckballs, feels like a minute since I was .. twenty or something) years of age and a student of Library and Information Science and hoping to have an interesting job in a library or research institute by this time next year. If I can't find anything maybe I´ll go on working constructions and stuff but I´d rather put my education to use O.o

I go by VonKleist after the german poet because I like the sound of it and because my dad used to call me "Heinrich" as a nickname and I like the sound of that too and it´s a fond memory.

I love this forum for the cameraderie and the people here for putting my shit into perspective insofar as that I´m not some major weirdo deadbeat asshole and there´s plenty of folks dealing with the same kind of psychological issues.

Anyway, it´s a pleasure to meet you all :)

here´s my picture

Beep. I be Welu. The name is a combination of two old nicknames I used to have and I use Welu T. Dixon as my internet/artist/writer/irrelgular video producer pseudonym.

I started lurking the forums shortly before the break-up arc but didn't join till a few months later, March 2011 which is actually more recent than I though, when the forums calmed down to a level I felt comfortable joining. So I kinda knew a lot about people here before I signed up and looking back that's sort of weird and stalker-y.

I'm doing a university degree in a technical college in Northern Ireland. Studying creative media productions.

I have a doggy called Socks but she lives with my parents because my house is too small for a doggy.

I think that's actually a lot of information I've never said before on this forum.

Hey y'all. I'm Linds. When I originally joined my name was iamyourpirate but nobody remembers that because I thought it was dumb and didn't keep it for very long. Linds is my RL nickname that my mom and very close friends use, but I felt so comfortable here, I wanted to use that instead of my full first name or a screen name. I've been posting since 2006 and have seen all sorts of changes here! But I like how the forum has evolved and will probably stick around to watch it evolve some more.  :-)

I'm 26, will be graduating with a Masters in Art Ed in 3 weeks (!), currently have no real job prospects, live in Cincinnati, OH, am a huge nerd (gaming, fantasy/sci-fi novels, D&D, you name it) and I'm marrying one of my best friends (Michael, if you've seen me mention him by name and was all wtf) in June. I have met a lot of people through this forum and I consider several of them to be friends outside of the internet. I also talk about a lot of cats: Hobbes - lives with me and Michael, Parker - lives with my mom because he fights with male cats so can't live with Hobbes, Hermione - my mom's cat that is scared of pretty much everything but somehow gets along ok with Parker, and Harley - belongs to two of my friends that I used to live with that hates pretty much everyone except for the three of us. So if you couldn't tell, I really like kitties. And all animals really. (Which is why Bob Ross holding a raccoon is currently my avatar.)

Also here's a picture of me for reference:

This is a nifty thread :-) Thanks for starting it, Gareth.

And nice to re-meet everyone!

I'm lepetitfromage aka Kim. 27, living in Poughkeepsie, NY. Don't exactly remember how I came up with this name, but I know I started using it to sign artwork before it turned into my online moniker. Plus, I just needed something a little less....cutesy (my prior screen name was abstractangel). I played around with bravelittletoasterstrudel for a while, but it was a bit too long IMO. Currently working at a crappy office job (been here for 4 years....ugh), dreaming of a career in art education and doin' crafty stuff in the meantime to maintain my sanity. I'm engaged to Nick- my goofy nerd, my teammate....my rock, really. He knows me better than anyone else and manages to not only handle my Crazy but help me come to terms with it as well  :-D We live with out cat (Fuzz) and our guinea pig (Rocko). Rocko's buddy Spunky passed away in October. RIP little dude

Started posting in the forums roughly 2 years ago (my two year anniversary is in a couple weeks! whaaaaat). I was reading the comic for about a year, started lurking around and then finally signed up when I got a feel for how things work around here. I started posting in the WCDT but eventually made my way into the Chatter section and now I generally stay down here. Much less snark and bickering (although the mods do indeed do a fabulous job making sure it doesn't escalate to more than that- good job, mods!). It's a tad amusing to me that people are more emotionally charged when speaking about fictional characters than they are about their own lives.

I typically hang out in the blog thread, the foodie thread and the P&D thread. I post a lot about my brain and how it works because A) It's fascinating to me and B) I think talking about mental health stuff is healing, helpful and a great release. I like to feel that I'm doing my part to break down the stigma of mental illness while helping others battle their own brains as well. Sometimes I worry that my posts come off as self-centered because I talk about myself a lot but then most of the people here knock some sense into me. Because, y'know....that whole thing with relating to other people through experiences and such. Forums are pretty good for that. I've posted on a few others before but it was a loooooooong time ago and they were never interesting enough to hold my attention for very long. The people in this forum have really been wonderful and I consider myself incredibly lucky to have "met" you guys. I never imagined that I would find a place like this amongst the sea of idiots on the interweb. I'm very grateful for all of the things that I've gotten through with the help of the forumites and I sincerely hope that some of the advice I've given has helped some of you as well. I've learned so much about each of you and in turn, have learned quite a bit about myself as well. Plus...you're all a LOT of fun. :-)

Blah, blah, blah, more mushy love-y, hippie stuff.....I'll not bore you any longer hahaha. Have some photos instead!

I always read your name like the Sabres player who had the surname Satan. That is, I pronounce it paper-shuh-ton

I wanted that dude's jersey so bad when he spent half a season in Boston. Booo.

Hello, thread. I am Shane, and I have been around these parts since like, 2005? A long time. I have met some of you, and some of you have met me. I once left an old forumite on a couch at a sorority house once because I was too drunk to figure out anything otherwise. Dark days, bros.

I am 25, and live in the northwestern corner of Massachusetts. I went to college for a while, until I couldn't afford it. Now I'm not really sure what I do. I'd like to run a record store someday.

This is me. On the right. On the left is Frank Turner. A nice English lad who's good at writing songs.

I've noticed people are shortening my name as "idu", "idont" "IDU" etc. It feels retarded to me, so I'm stepping out.

I'm Karl, pleased to meet you. Jag är Svensk. 26 years old.

I like playing and listening to music and also boxing.

I'm pretty skinny, but also pretty strong. I can't sing.

I've got a master's degree in law, but haven't found any use for it yet.

No photo's, but PM me and I'll be happy to add you on FB or something.  :-)

Honestly? Mostly because I couldn't face dealing with the fallout from my relationship status changing. I was thinking about how awful it was going to be, having to see xB on facebook all over the place (we're part of several of the same groups) and I suddenly realised that there weren't many very good reasons to be on there any more, and it might help my degree if I weren't. I miss it slightly, but only slightly. I expect I'll reactivate at some point in the future, but it certainly won't be until I've stopped crying myself to sleep.

Howdy folks,

I joined the forum back in 2006. I was always mostly a lurker but lately I haven't even been doing that.
The reason I'm going to at least attempt to lurk more is to keep in touch with Linds, May, Kat, Stephen, and whoever else is still around from the olden days. In the meantime I'm sure that I'll get to know some new folk.

This is me from a few years back. It's one of my favorite pictures of me. We're sitting in a barrestaurant discussing the Dark Heresy campaign I was starting. I am obviously explaining something to someone. There's even a chance I was right!

Here's a more recent one taken in November. I'm wearing a Toowoomba City Rollers shirt. The Toowoomba City Rollers is a derby team that another forumite is on. (Note: I live no where near Toowoomba) (also note that Toowoomba is fun to say and to type)

Hello. I am blanktom...or just Thom (although I started using the 'h' in my name in like 2008 and I have been a member on here since 2005. holy shit).

I am 25 (coming up to 26) and I co-manage a rather hipster friendly pub in the fine city of Norwich, England. I like nearly everything media based (music, television, films), both high and low brow, and play Xbox games. I kinda lurk a bit on these forums, so my post count/time I've been a member ratio is way off, but I am on here nearly every day. It's mainly cos I'm a lazy typer so don't like replying to shit unless I have something I feel is worth posting.

I basically joined the forums because I was reading the comic and when I checked it out everyone on here seemed pretty cool, but it's worth giving special mention to Shane (valley_parade) who I've decided is my QC Forums best bro. One day I am going to go see him in MA and I will show him how awesome I am at trivia.

I guess I better add a photo. I never usually look this cool, and genuinely only took this photo to send to my best friend who wanted to see my new sunglasses.

I don't have a post in this thread! Great idea to sticky it though.

Anyway, I'm Kristin (or Kris if you want, most English speaking folks call me that). I'm a soon-to-be 25 year old from Norway, but I live in Glasgow, Scotland because I study art here, I'm in my final year now and it's a tiny bit stressful. I joined this forum in 2008 when my brother (Jeans) suggested it for me, and I've been here on and off since, with a hiatus for a couple years recently. I've met quite a few people from this forum in real life, including Barmymoo, Linds, ackblom12 and papersatan, and they're all nice people, so it's nice to be back.

Hello, I'm Hannah!

I joined in 2005  when I was having a year off school after back surgery. At one point I was the undisputed leader of the "Most time spent online" list (I just checked and I am still #2 even though I haven't been on here for years). I live in Sydney, Australia, live with my boyfriend est (he's an admin here but hasn't been around for a fair while) and our two idiot cats. I have come back to this place because my work has been SO BORING lately that I used up all the interesting sites I normally frequent and remembered about this place.

Here's a photo of me being a doofus in Melbourne in June:

I have been informed that it actually does get cold in Australia. But their definition of cold is probably different than people like me, who get snow (sometimes), and mine is different than people who, say, are from Norway, like Kris. And then there's those crazy people who visit Antarctica. I'm sure they know what cold really feels like.

I recommend Brazil instead of Scotland... I was at our collaborator's lab at the University of Sao Paulo a couple years ago. The lab is almost the only air-conditioned building in the city, so I didn't mind spending time there when it was 35C and humid outside. The AC was set to 19C. I would be wearing shorts and a T-shirt, and the Brazilians wore winter coats in the lab.  :psyduck:

I'm currently 22 years old, doing my Bachelor's in Computer Science, specializing in Embedded System and Microrobotics, and I work part-time as a Software Developer. So as you can see, I'm a giant nerd. Also I'm from Germany. A German nerd. Yes, that's me. I have yet to meet anybody from this forum, but I'd like to sometime.
If I find a recent picture of me that I like enough, I might post it here.

Hey folks, Method here, or Eric if you prefer. 26, first year (of three) law student in New Hampshire (lived in New Jersey my whole life until August). Dating an amazing girl named Sarah despite living almost 500 km away while I'm at school (although we were together a year already when I moved, the long distance was hard at first, but we're making it work and growing stronger). Yeah, I'm an American who prefers metric, it's weird. According to my profile I joined late 2010 but I didn't really start posting (or even coming here at all) until early 2011, and I became a mod a little less than a year after that (January 2012, I think). I love it here, and I love you guys. This is me a week or so ago. My classmate's cat is not impressed.

Gareth is never joking.

At least, not about being hot.

So... my real first name is Carl.  The E has nothing to do with anything (although Carl-A through Carl-D might have something to say about that  :-P)

I'm a former math professor who, by being bad at academic politics has lost a ridiculous number of teaching positions.  I'm currently working three part time jobs, including teaching online, working at a beer distributor and freelance writing of high school math materials.  I've survived being hit by a car (two years ago December 3rd), and hitting a bear (the bear survived, too, but the car didn't).

I'm married with two daughters who are your age, 20 and 23.  The younger one was hit with thyroid cancer at 16, and was left with a rare neurological disorder and massive internal paralysis.  The older suffers from PTSD and depression after being attacked in her dorm room in her first semester of college (the same year as her sister getting ill).  She now works full time doing online tech support, and has abandoned her music.

I've been here since August '09, (just before all of the stuff above happened) and remember seeing many of you from the old days, though I was a n00b and I'm sure you never noticed.  I mostly lived "upstairs" and rarely wandered into the lower regions of the forum, but grew braver over time.

This is me; I like to eat and drink.   :-D

Post by: Jimmy the Squid on 03 Oct 2013, 06:20
Ok, It seems like I'm back here for a little while at least.

I'm Jimmy the Squid. I joined the forums back in 2005/2006 but ended up disappearing during the Great Leaving a few years ago. I initially came back because I knew Kat (Papersatan) and Stephen (Ackblom) were still here and I needed relationship advice and couldn't ask my other forum peeps as all the Australians get their hair cut by my partner. Given that so many people are coming back now that is kind of backfiring on me. Damn you secrets!

Anyway, I live in Sydney, Australia. I'm about to turn 27 in like, two weeks. I have several psychology degrees and I work in mental health, basically as a social worker for the severely mentally ill. I'm hoping to go back to uni next year to do a master's degree but I don't think I'll get in. I have a bunch of piercings, full sleeve X-Men tattoos (nearly finished) and severe clinical depression. I sing in Sydney's most underground black metal band. I think that's about all you need to know as a starting off point. There's no point revealing everything straight away, or there's no mystique.

Here is a picture of my face. It's not a very nice face but it serves its purpose for now.

I get that it was supposed to be a joke, yes, but it wasn't a very good one.

Let me try again.

You are an attractive person. Any references to temperature were metaphorical.

Edit: fuck decorum, you are gorgeous, and I was attempting to draw attention to that. Sorry for any offence caused.

Post by: Kugai on 05 Oct 2013, 00:26
Greetings and salutaitions one and all from your friendly neighbourhood Kiwi Kugai.  :)

My real name is James (duh) and I live down here in Middle Earth - better known as Wellington, New Zealand in the wonderful Hutt Valley.

I'm 51 currently and have been since May (hehe).  Love Cats, but I don't have one at the moment having recently - five months or so ago - lost my boy Garfield (he went missing).  Spent nearly 20 odd years as my mothers caregiver up until around '08 - part time between '90 and '02, then full time after that until she went into a home towards the end of '07 - beginning of '08 when she finally had to go into a Home.  She passed away three years later.

For the past three or so years I've had eyesight issues, and flirted with being declared Legally Blind for a while, but things are somewhat stable, but I still have enough of a problem with it that I've been on what is called the Invalids Benefit for the last three years and am under regular Hospital Care for it.  And to top it all off, it looks like I may be developing Cataracts - Oh joy!   ::)

Asthmatic, but I've had that since puberty, and it's well under control.

Live on my own, but have a great circle of friends and, despite the eyesight issues, have worked part time as counter staff at a now defunct local bookshop, doing about two - three hours a day there, which enabled me to earn a little extra cash-in-the-hand.  Miss the job - don't miss the boss.

Get out a bit, and enjoy walking as an exercise - which is why I'm looking forward to summer finally kicking in properly down here.  :)

That's about all the general info.  Did, I think, Post a fairly recent Pic of me here at one stage, but I'll Post it again if it's no longer floating around or has vanished into the void.

Wow a lot of familiar faces showing up here.

Yes, I'm still lurking about.
My typical forum behavior which is taking so long to decide whether or not to say something, then taking even longer to decide how to say it and then finally giving up and not posting after several days have gone by and the thread as moved on to another subject continues unabated. As a matter of fact it is facilitated by the fact that more often than not I am checking the forum on my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk  at work and I'm not completely familiar with it so I am loathe to attempt to post something plus I don't want to take the time to type something out while at work.
Also I like run-on sentences.
So there.
Fun Fact - Tapatalk (at least Tapatalk HD) does not hide things behind a spoiler tag. It shows the spoiler tag and then shows whatever it was that was behind it.

I may post more often now that IRC seems to be in a permanent lull. I have to get my bare minimum of social interaction somewhere!

I'm 27, live in Maryland near Washington DC, married to a boy named Robert, and have a large dog named Patrick. No kids (yet). I've been around here since 2007 but mostly only in Chatter/Relate and their precursors, and a lot of the time I type things but then decide not to hit Post. I work in a building management office and I complain about my dumb coworker a lot. That's good for now, I guess, so here's a picture of me at work.

Title: Re: The re-introduction thread
Post by: Stryc9Fuego on 29 Oct 2013, 06:13
Sorry, trying to be funny there. The wikipedia definition (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jobber) had an alternate definition stated as:
1. A being or tool that "jobs", pecks, or stabs, such as:
Jobber, a length of drill bit
Tree-jobber or wood-jobber, a woodpecker[1]

4. A professional wrestler who routinely loses a match (see Job (professional wrestling))

So basically, either a loser or a pecker.

I am male and *counts* 22. I have been an IT student at a German university for... whelp, two years? I am active in our student organisation/initiative/council or whatchaever call it.
I am also minoring in English Studies.

People tell me I'm altruistic and insightful an' shit. In reality, I guess I'm good at fixing everyone's problems except my own.

I'm vegetarian. (Remembered this because my pizza just arrived.) I dislike slapping labels on relationships.

I used to struggle with medicament-induced depressions and I have a bunch of emotional baggage pent up from a shitty childhood, both of which I guess feeds into my insecurities.

Uhm... you'll learn everything else as you go along, I guess.

So, I feel that I should reintroduce myself, although if you take a look at my most recent posts, you'll see that I had intended to be a better forumite nearly two years ago, so we'll see how it goes.

I'm Edith, a 39-year-old librarian. I used to be called pinkgrrlygeek and am still called Eed. I love this forum and its current and former members, even when I don't come around much. I live close to Redball and CRAP I NEED TO FIGURE OUT WHEN BOB IS COMING TO MY HOUSE... Bob, are you coming tomorrow? When do you leave? Call me!

Sorry.

I live close to Redball when he isn't being a snowbird and flying south for the winter, and I visit him much too occasionally. I receive drunken snapchats from Papersatan on a regular basis, and they always make me smile.

When I first joined here, in 2006, I had just lost about 50 lbs. Since then, I've gained it all back and added some extra padding, and my joints hurt and I can't reach my shoelaces comfortably, so I am gathering my application materials to go on "The Smallest Winner" which is a local version of "The Biggest Loser." If I get accepted into the program, I'll work out with a personal trainer for an hour per day, 4 days per week, for 15 weeks, and then train on my own for a half-marathon in September.

I work in a library, and actually work there more than I used to do back when I forumed a lot. I also don't have the internet at my house, and I'm happier for it. I value the connections I've made here at the QC forums, but I am a natural extrovert and very much need physical and verbal interactions with others in order to be emotionally whole.

Someday I would like to take a world tour and visit all the forumites I hosted during Chicagocon, and any other neat folks I have met along the way. I am currently saving money so I can make a career change *with* a safety net. I'd like to run a tater-tot food truck, or maybe a resale shop, or work for an auctioneer. Anything with a better career outlook than public libraries!

Glad to see you all. :)

Uhm...hi.

I haven't posted in these forums, or visited this site, or read the comic in about four years. Or maybe five...my maths is bad. I used to be known as the username 10101110, and then somebody changed it to just Will. The last thing I can remember happening here is Jhocking (I think? Didn't we just call him Joe) reaching 10,000 posts, and then Tommydski constantly deleting old posts of his so he wouldn't ever reach 10,000.

I used to live in a teeny little town in western Pennsylvania, but I moved about a year ago and now I live in Manchester, NH.
I'm still Facebook friends with like...nine of y'all. I've missed it here. I think I'll come back.

In a word, yes! I'd suggest a bit of lurking and reading the rules in the DISCUSS section (and some of the more active threads in there) to get a general idea. Some of the former regulars have left feeling that the atmosphere isn't for them any more.

I'd really advise doing what May suggested. Even a toned down version of how I used to behave on here (formerly DynamiteKid, by the way, I remember you if you don't remember me...) got me in some trouble.

Well, well, well, what have we here?

It's been a while, to say the least, but I've never really had the time to dedicate myself to forums - or indeed the attention span. Nevertheless, here I am again, though probably not for long.

I started lurking here in 2006 after a few years or so(?) on ye olde irc channel, and boy do I ever not recognize most of you. Very pleased to see Bain, Est, Hannah, Edith, Gareth, Patrick, and not least Squiddy are still around. As my huuuge post count (3 including this one) seems to indicate, I won't be particularly seen or heard from here, but I thought I'd say hi.

For those of you that haven't kept up elsewhere, loads of things has happened over the past eight years. I'm still married to the same lovely lady, but we have a son now, and we've bought an apartment in a wonderfully-non-posh-yet-horribly-expensive part of greater Copenhagen. I've also sort of managed to end up working on very large scale linux deployments, currently with oversight of operations for a 1500+ server hosting setup and the associated operations team in India (which I have so far not had to visit). I've also managed to meet up with quite a few very lovely QC-related people over the years, not least Jmrz, Catfish_Man, pickle, and surya.

See you all again in eight years or less, I suppose?

You pretty much don't have to - I have a US colleague that spent a few years here without ever learning. Almost everyone here speaks a pretty ok English and are eager to do so given the chance.

Post by: Method of Madness on 18 Feb 2014, 06:33
Yeah, that's fine for visiting but if I live somewhere I feel I should learn the language. Then again, I'd probably pick up enough after a while, so...who knows what the future will bring? If I'm there in eight years when you come back, I'll let you know
Title: Re: The re-introduction thread
Post by: Metope on 18 Feb 2014, 12:03
Moving somewhere is the best way to learn the language there! And you can get on perfectly without knowing Danish in Denmark, so you could easily move there and not know a word, and then spend your time learning.

Title: Re: The re-introduction thread
Post by: Metope on 18 Feb 2014, 14:04
Doubt it, although it might make it a little harder to find something. Depends on your field of work as well, but there are plenty of English speakers working full time in Norway at least, and I bet it's the same for Denmark. Tech work is usually very English-friendly, and lots of international companies in all kinds of fields do everything in English anyway, since that's the language most people in the west have in common.

Post by: pwhodges on 18 Feb 2014, 14:21
When I worked for Norsk Data in the 1980s (at the time it was the second largest company in Norway), the official language in their head office was English.  Although the locals naturally spoke Norwegian among themselves, there was no sense that an English speaker was excluded in any way.  I've heard similar things more recently about Philips in Holland, so I suppose it's not that uncommon.
Title: Re: The re-introduction thread
Post by: Sousaphone on 18 Feb 2014, 23:14
The corporate language where I work is English, same goes for almost all the IT-related businesses of a similar size or larger that I know of, as well as quite a  lot of other companies. For Copenhagen alone this means at least two to three digit figure numbers of companies where not knowing Danish (yet) is not a problem at all.

My son will be three next week, which also means it's now almost four years since I last saw any of the old forum people in real life. Don't ask me where time went or how many diapers I've had to change...

Carl-E posted in the last 24 hours in a Comic thread, reminding us that he's alive and tracking the comic. He also responded to my earlier welfare check message, and asked that I post it:

"Hi.  Thanks for your concern!  I'm ... relatively fine.  A little depressed after not getting the online job I had blogged about, and  - well - I'm back to writing (I hate it) and just to get anything done I need to stay away from here.  It's too easy to avoid working.

There are a couple of things I'm applying for, we'll see what happens, but whatever does happen (more work or not) I'll probably not be coming back anytime soon.  Not because I don't want to - I do, I love it here, I love you guys - but I just can't afford the time anymore.

My name is Simon, I'm 27 and I live in Poland. I'm realy interested in all kinds of RPG and board games. Also if I have time I participate in Airsoft military simulations or Airsoft Larps in postapocalyptic theme.
I work in logistics (good job but I'm planning on opening Postapocalyptic theme pub in Warsaw in Poland somewhere in the future) and I'm at my last month studying Sociology at Koźmiński University. I'm writing my M.A. about webcomics so if someone want to help me I posted i Chatter a thread with link to my survey.

Couple of pointers for ya.
1: This is the wrong thread for new people to introduce themselves.  There's a whole board for it.  It's the one called "Hi, I'm new."
2: Usually, you introduce yourself before you ask complete strangers for help, not after.  And especially not after a mod calls you out for posting a link to a survey in your first ever post.

Orkboy, some of the members of this community (pwhodges, for instance) have been here for a long time and we know each other very well. You are new here. That's fine - new people are welcome. But please don't make assumptions about others, such as assuming you know what their life experience is in comparison to yours.

cesium, Jesus didn't make it out of his thirties before he was resurrected into eternal life, so technically he'd be one of the younger members of this forum ;)

Yeah, but if he was resurrected, then his life continued and he'd thus be over two thousand years old

Orkboy: There's a fine line between the witty guy who makes you chuckle every now and then and the guy who just comes off as belligerently abrasive.
Allow me to reintroduce myself, then.

My name is Richard.  By the age of 25, I had been shot at, stabbed, electrocuted, burned, blown up, and had to walk with a cane.  Belligerently abrasive is who I was.  Belligerently abrasive people were told to stop being me.  I could lie, and just pretend everything is sunshine and rainbows and unicorns, but that's unhealthy, and pretending to be what you aren't is a terrible way to live your life.  I'm less openly belligerent now that I stopped drinking so much and met an awesome girl, but I'm still fairly abrasive.  Like sandpaper that's only mostly worn out.

It has soft spots, and is easier to work with.  Gets into the details better.

I guess it's time to get back into it. I made my last post in July of '09, and after reviewing some of my old posts, I just want to apologize. I was obnoxious and argumentative back then. I'd like to think I've changed. I hope I have. I know I have a better sense of who I am now, and I'm not looking for the approval of strangers on the internet. That's progress, right?

So this is me, now:

Well, I registered here in July '06, which after doing some quick math means that I was 14 at the time. Looking back at my posts this becomes rather evident, because while I didn't post often, when I did I spoke with that cringe worthy tone of someone trying to desperately fit in with the cool older kids. For the longest time I only posted in and kept up with the World of Warcraft thread, and I stopped coming here frequently when that thread began to die.

I feel that the QC forums had a substantial impact on my life, probably most notably on my humour and my music tastes. My tastes developed more in one afternoon of lurking everyone's profiles in the Last.fm thread than the rest of my life up to that point. That's probably the very definition of impressionable young teenager, but I don't regret it for a second.

I still come back here to lurk every now and again, seeing if I can still recognize any of the usernames.

I'm Kate/thedevilissix.  British, last seen here probably...2009?
I think I posted more than 4 posts back then, so possibly I have a clean slate of posts(?) but despite my tendency to lurk more than post I've been a long time QC fan and it has been a staple with my breakfast and coffee every morning for a long time.
I also had an avatar that I've sadly lost that was a b/w picture of a novelty flamenco dancing pepper mill (continuing the vein of Pixies references!). I'm sure I also owe someone a mixtape-if it's you, sorry! Perhaps it might be an idea to finally do it, eh...!

So this thread exists? I don't think I ever got to introduce myself. I'm David, I wish I'd picked a better username but I don't have a way to change it. I live in NC but hail from cloudy Cleveland, Ohio. I'm in college as a technical theatre major. I also used to be a poli sci major but cynicism/a really bad internship caught up with me on that one. I love musicals, classic film, and music. I also used to be a debater (no I was not a master) but our team switched formats and I didn't like the new format. But academic debate remains an interest of mine and I still judge tournaments if one's in driving distance. The first verse of Basket Case describes my mental state pretty well. I'm half Lebanese/Syrian and was raised in the Melkite church. I don't talk to most of my family on account of disagreements we have about my bisexuality and non-religiousness. I have Crohn's, I have and will continue to complain about it a lot.

So yeah, monologue over. Yaaaay my life.

Well, I haven't been totally absent from the forum since I remarried late in 2014. But mostly absent. It may not change. But the forum was important to me for nearly 3 years, figuring out a new life for myself after my wife of 40 years died.
I've become a churchgoer. Not a particularly religious one. My new wife, Rachel, comes from a line of Methodist pastors. I sing in the fairly decent little choir near Kalamazoo in Michigan, and also here in Arizona for the couple of months we're down here, in a very good choir. Singing's important to me; I still drive 2 hours into Detroit a dozen times in the fall to rehearse and perform with an a cappella group.
The pace is about to pick up as soon as we return to Michigan: Trying to sell my house an hour away from Kalamazoo, go to Mississippi for Rachel's 50th high school reunion in early June, get our house ready for her younger son's American wedding in early July and get ready for the same son's Chinese wedding in September or October.
He lives in Shanghai and met a young woman there a year or so ago. The wedding will be a few hours north of Shanghai, in Lianyungang. It'll be my third in Asia over the last half-century.
I expect to consult Akima before this one's over.

Naw, I'm new to the Kalamazoo area. I lived in and around Detroit most of my life until I retired to an area near the Ohio-Indiana border, about 2 hours from Detroit, less than that from Kalamazoo. And it's not a small place. The population of the city and surrounding county is 250k plus. Lots of industry there: pharmaceuticals, medical equipment (Stryker) and, surprising to me, a large bedding plant and nursery business.

Joined these forums in 2008 apparently. I don't remember what was going on in QC but the strip count was somewhere in the 1000s.
I never posted here that often, but I've been going to whatever forums are still around lately because I've been kinda nostalgic about them.
I'm a speedrunner, Twitch streamer, and old-school video game nerd. Particularly Nintendo and Playstation stuff.
I tall and lanky and constantly get compared to Weird Al and Shaggy.
My music preferences are mostly electronic/hip hop and were once pretty heavily influenced by recommendations that Jeph used to post in like 2009 lol.
Some favorites are Nujabes, Daft Punk, Flamingosis, Agalloch, Fever Ray, Birocratic, Kendrick, Röyksopp, Sene
I can beatbox, I'm into a bit of anime/manga (but mostly too distracted as a default state to consume a lot of media).
I'm a few months into self-studying Japanese (mostly for internet-related purposes)
I used to be really into forums before they were mostly killed by social media.

That's about it as far as interests go. Hello, nice to meet you, etc.

Hm. I guess I could re-introduce myself.

I am in my late twenties () I have recently finished my Bachelor degree in Computer Science and am now majoring in Linguistics to add a second Bachelor degree on top of that.

I have been a member of this forum for, like, 10 years. Over this time, I realized I am polyamorous, vegetarian, queer, kinky, and maybe a relationship anarchist. I am in... at least one relationship right now.

Living in Germany, interested in linguistics and psychology. Ex-moderator. Good in organizing stuff and communicating.

Well, finally made it here. For those that might be interested I'm 57 and work in an organic vineyard in Marlborough, New Zealand. In my spare time I collect wargaming miniatures, play computer games and write the occasional short story for the enjoyment of others.
Found webcomics, through Pinterest of all things, about three months ago and have since read all of Questionable Content, Dumbing of Age, Girls with Slingshots and Alice Grove. Recently started re-reading QC and found this wee gem. "I once read something somewhere that stated 33 as being the average number of strips webcomic authors will produce before quitting out of frustration/boredom/etc. I don't know if that's true or not, but it's always been in the back of my head. It makes today's strip, #33, a little special to me- I've made it this far and I have no plans of stopping anytime soon. It's heartening to know that I enjoy doing QC as much as I do. It's even more heartening (and very surprising) that other people seem to be enjoying it as well." I wonder if 2003 Jeph would have believed that 3,700 strips later it'd still be going strong.

Now that is a birthday present.

Holy hell, I had to hover over your blog link in order to realize who you were. The fuck? They made you a mod? Must have been desperate ;) Jokes aside, it's bloody good to see you, you fart of a man.

what gave?  mostly just alot of life.
When I returned from vacation, work life struck back with a vengence.
from August until January my team fielded about 140% of our contracted work load.
all while being at half strength in Technicians.  Turnover was terrible.
during that time I was either commuting or at work about 12-14 hours a day.

other than a odd hour of videogaming or vegging to YT, I've had nigh zero social life.

But in late January, I was able to convince our CEO to allow thru Annual Reviews and maximum rate pay raises.
So guys who were thinking  of leaving stayed.  And I also managed to recruit some lower tier, but technically savvy help.  The last day of January, we had 2100 tickets in queue w/8 Techs.  Today, we have 390 tickets and 13 Techs.

But it has been a nasty hard slog.

Hi guys! I've been reading since 2003, and have often been discombulated by the forum discussions in recent years. "Oh, I'll only contribute when I really have something to say," I often thought to myself. Hahaha, that worked out extremely well.

Hi all.  Used to post here some though I was never a heavy poster.  I just checked my last post was in March 2015.  Don't know why I quit posting, 'cause I still read the comic regularly.  Don't know how much I'll post now.  We'll see how it goes.

Hey everyone,

I still exist. Somehow. A lot has been happening.

I don't even know where to begin, or where I left off. I don't know why I stopped visiting here, but I've never forgotten you people.

So yeah. In the meantime I've dropped out of the other university, started an apprenticeship in software development (German 'Ausbildung Fachinformatiker (Anwendungsentwicklung)'), finished said apprenticeship, and have started working as a web developer in January at the place where I did the apprenticeship.

There's been a lot of other stuff as well. I go by they/them pronouns now, among my closest friends at least, but am currently still questioning my gender identity. In my professional life I haven't mentioned any of this.

Still, all in all I've been pretty fine.

How is everyone? Anyone still remember me?

Hey everyone,

great to see these familiar names. I definitely remember you, sitnspin, but I guess that's a bit easier for me, considering I didn't interact with people on this forum for a long time and don't have newer memories than those.

I think I was most active ca. 2012 to 2015 IIRC? Came back in 2018 for a bit. Gosh it feels like a lifetime ago. I hadn't even finished school when I started visiting.

When I came back here I was in a really dark place, and it took me a while to get better. I had a therapy group for a while, struggled a lot when deciding to finally drop out of university and start vocational education (Germany has this system of earning certified job titles through a mixture of a (badly) paid apprenticeship on 3 days of the week and 2 days of vocational school). Usually it takes 3 years, but having been to university allowed me to reduce it to 2, and good grades allowed me to reduce it even further to 1.5.

I wouldn't say I'm in a particularly good place atm, but well, with the pandemic and all, who even is. I'm definitely better though. Looking back on the last few years there's little I'd do differently, because I wouldn't have had the good times without the occasional bad ones, and I feel like that's the important bit.

Currently my main issue is stress. I've been working under extreme pressure over the last 1.5 years. Our company creates software for small to medium sized pharma companies, is way understaffed, and for some reason we took over a project related to a Covid vaccine. I'm not going to say too much about it, but I think I can mention that I've more or less single handedly written the module of our software product which one vaccine manufacturer uses for tracking public requests, but also adverse events and product quality complaints for 2 countries. It's safe to say, I hope I'll never again have to write software which is used to track potentially fatal events. That's not a responsibility I want to have.

But yeah, I think I won't say much more about this, definitely not in the Chatter subforum.

Still: overall I'm better than I was when I last visited, and I hope you're all doing well.

p.s.: Cesium, it really cheered me up to see you're still using the Gordon I've colorised for you as your avatar :D

Good to hear you're doing better.

And, yeah, I've had this avatar for a long time. I was still living in Oklahoma when I took the original picture. Moved to Wisconsin in 2015, then to Illinois, and now I'm in Canada.

Welp, I randomly decided to check on this forum just in time for its End of Days. But here's a final re-introduction and some changes that have happened in the last couple years

I'm 28 years old

I live in Chicago now, and am working in live theatre again (as of this April) after a couple years spent first in a shitty retail job and then in a shitty hospital data entry job. So the moves since I last posted have been

Sarasota, FL -> Winston-Salem, NC (to live with family because lol pandemic) -> Madison, WI -> Chicago, IL

At previously mentioned shitty retail job I got Covid (November 2020, pre-vaccinations or really pre-effective treatments at all) had a very bad time and haven't felt quite right since.

The shitty data entry job gave me health insurance, which is when I had my first doctor's appointment in over a decade and found out I was type 2 diabetic - very common in my family but for some reason I thought I was too young for it. In response to this I took up hiking as a hobby, started actually exercising, and lost 50 pounds. I was able to get my A1C back into a healthy range without medication, which I am really proud of.
