Title: Warm and fuzzy open letters thread, Part I
Post by: Thrillho on 30 Nov 2012, 09:42
I wrote some warm fuzzy letters in the vitriolic open letters thread, and between bouts of vomiting, some other posters told me to take a step outside with my gay shit.

So here I am.

Write your warm open letters to strangers, or even folks on here.

A lot of us need a little bit more positivity in our lives.

Neko saw her letter already, but:

Dear Patrick

I fucking love you man, I really do.

Love,
Gareth

This thread is similar to the Vitriol thread only that you can write letters to anything and everything that make you happy. Both in the literal sense, where we write letters to our furry friends (like ferrets and kittens), or anything that makes you feel warm and fuzzy, such as people who have made your day, other forumites, your best friends, loved ones, anybody and anything!

Dear kittens,

I know the internet thinks I should stop wasting my time looking at pictures of you, but you seriously help brighten my seriously otherwise dull, stressful days. Your pictures make me smile and I don't think the internet really understands how much people just need something cute to smile about. So keep on being cute, you little cuddleballs.

Sincerely,
Linds

Dear fuzzy blanket on my bed,

You're pretty rad at keeping me warm. Plus my girlfriend seems to think you are the most comfortable thing on the planet. I'm not the biggest fan, personally, but a warm me and a happy girlfriend are awesome.

Cheers,
Shane

Gareth,

I may have said this elsewhere, or I may have only thought it, but I'm sad to hear everything you're going through - but I'm still glad to have you back, anyways.

Dear People of this Forum,

I genuinely don't know how I'd spend a significant portion of my time on the internet without you. Also in various threads you have shown me and others such loving support.

Cheers,
Welu.

Dear Siberian kitten who hasn't been born yet,

We'll adopt you as soon as we find a solution to my wife's allergy problem. Then you will be welcome to snuggle between my arm and my torso and put your paws on my shoulder as we sink into a bath of warm oxytocin.

You can hear a lumberjack with sleep apnea at a distance of 20 km.  It's not necessarily from personal experience...

Dear thread; While walking the dogs today, I came across a guy who used to live across the street from me and helped me a couple of times with my van.  It was nice seeing him again.  Then I met another guy working on his beautiful old house and we got to talking - turns out we both appreciate a lot of the same things (antiques, old houses, etc.).  Not many people around here do...

It was just a really nice day, and made me feel good about being where I am.

Dear Unicorn,

Thanks! It's good to be back. A lot's changed around here, and I'm glad it has.

Dear work colleagues,

Only two of you made it out in the end last night, but it was all I needed. I may not have got so bombed that I don't remember anything, I may not have gone balls deep in some slutty two-bagger, but honestly... it was the best night I've had in a long time (Hundred Reasons gig aside). It was nice to just sit and chat and laugh with some friends again. It's been too long since I have. I had a brilliant night.

Dear office gossip,

Thanks for not bothering to show up. I missed you like a tumour.

Love, Gareth

Dear little girl at the grocery store,

Though the truth is it would probably be gross and watery, when you declared defiantly that you wanted pancakes with grapes, my heart melted in happiness.  I hope you get to make them (and then throw them out, because no).  Rock on, little lady.

Dear kitten my wife's friend found crying under a dumpster,

Thank you for living with us until you were over 16-1/2, and accepting our care. I'm not sure which of us benefitted most. I'm glad your little body held together well enough that you were jumping on laps and purring less than seven hours before everything collapsed.

Dear Socks, who is a doggy and not clothes for feet,

You're a bit of an idiot but you're also ridiculously affectionate and any trick I've tried to teach you, you've picked up and retained in less than thirty minutes. Plus it's funny when you jump way too early and smack into the bottom of the sofa, especially the fourth time in an hour.

Even though I still see you two or three times I week I miss the hell outta you.

Beep,
Welu.

Dear adult Siberian cat who is the breeder's own pet,

It was gentlemanly of you to greet us at the door, and exceptionally warm of you to teleport into my lap as soon as I sat down and melt all over me.

I could listen to you purr all day.

I was touched when my wife and I were leaving and you wrapped your paws around our legs trying to keep us inside with you.

You are a credit to your race.

Dear Percy and Yuki (my oversized tabbies, orange and gray respectively),

You guys are the best. You cuddle me just when I need cuddles, and you know just when you headbutt me and purr like crazy. And you do the most adorable things when I throw catnip toys at you. You're the best kitties. I love waking up to one of you purring and kneading on me.

Dear Jaxom and The Stig (chubby ferrets, sable and dark-eyed-white respectively),

You are ridiculously adorable. I love burying my face in your fur and then getting kisses on the forehead just because I'm in kissing range. You cheer me up, make me laugh, and remind me every day why I love ferrets.

Love, mama.

Dear Hobbes,

Thank you for being a cuddle bug. None of my cats have ever been as cuddly as you have. Also when you forget you're old and realize you're a cat and start running around the house, it makes me giggle. Also sometimes your meows make you sound like a murloc (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qMPpnCvCZvw) and it's hilarious.

Dear relatively new black kitten my daughter found in a parking lot trying to eat gravel not a week after Majick (our black cat) died,

Now that you're interacting (wrestling, grooming) with the other cats and running around the house on paws that sound like thunder, missing your leaps, and playing with everything in sight, you make me laugh out loud.  Not LOL-style, but really laugh, out loud.

And I'm glad we finally settled on Hijinx / Jinxsy as a name.

Now, just learn to stay of the damn table, and we'll be good.

Dear other neighbor cat,

Fortunately I knew what it meant when you jumped up on me and started dragging your teeth through my hair. Thank you for being friendly enough to groom me.

Cats actually use the act of grooming to reinforce a hierarchy of dominance pretty often - the cat that does the grooming being the dominant one, that is.
Title: Re: Warm and fuzzy open letters thread, Part I
Post by: idontunderstand on 04 Dec 2012, 15:30
I've seen the exact opposite; the dominant cat being the one to demand being groomed and the other obeying..
Title: Re: Warm and fuzzy open letters thread, Part I
Post by: Zingoleb on 04 Dec 2012, 16:14
It does vary - I said pretty often, for a reason, since each social situation with animals needs to be evaluated on its own basis (animals are complicated, too!), but it tends to signify dominance.

way back when in high school me and a good friend really liked blink 182 but then they broke up.  after high school we barley saw each other for about 5 years.  Then back in 2009 blink 182 got back together and were on tour.  we always wanted to see them back in high school and I reached out to him on facebook and offered to go on a road trip to see them in Pittsburgh.  It was a lot of fun and great to see old friends.  Not too long after that he moved to the other side of the county, only to move back a year or so later.  We havnt hung out or spoke much (other than occasional facebook status crap) since the blink 182 concert 3 years ago.  well out of no were I got a message from him saying he has some tickets to coheed and cambria and wanted to know if I want to go.  Ive been pretty lonely as of late but it feels great when an old friend reaches out to hang out with you.

Oh man you guys this is such a wonderful thread. It makes my heart fell so...well, warm and fuzzy. Job well done!

Dear Coworkers,

I know we have our rough patches, but you guys kicked ass yesterday at the holiday party. It was probably the most fun I've ever had at one of our events- and I'd gladly do it every year moving forward over a fancy shmancy luncheon at some stuffy restaurant. Despite no one wanting to do a potluck party, the food was phenomenal. You were all great sports during the games and I was actually a little shocked at how well the whole thing went. It's days like yesterday that make me proud to work here. Also- it means a lot to me that you all spoke up about how much you appreciated all of the effort I put in. It was totally worth it.

and

Dear "Health Care Reimbursement" Check,

I was not expecting you and I'm still not quite sure why you're here but I love you. Thank you for making my already exciting weekend that much more awesome.

~Me

They're the cutest fucking things in the world and they bring joy and smelly fur into your life but the smelly fur is eclipsed by the joy. They look like they were conceived in a tube sock and will stick their furry little faces into anything they can find. They're squirmy and fuzzy and I've insofar failed to meet a ferret that didn't love people and love to play.

Ferrets are bitchin'.

My dog thought that the noise it Unicorn's video was The Most Interesting Thing. We had just sent him out into the hallway (he likes to army-crawl in until he's right under our feet, then we have to kick him out again) and when I started the video he came peeking around the corner with his ears up, trying to figure out what was making the noise.

You guys have made me miss my ferrets.  :(

I left my last one behind when we moved because we weren't allowed to have them in this apartment. He died last spring :(

No new pets until I have a job with a 5 year plan though. <sigh>

May: ferrets in general are bigger in the UK. They're often bred with polecats and are just huge and fat and fluffy and awesome. Get one so you can take pictures and I can then come steal him.

Kat: you can always volunteer at a shelter! Or go to a fundraising event. You can still play with stinky fuzzy things.

If I get into Manchester for midwifery, which I feel is fairly likely, and if I move into the house I have sort-of arranged to live in, which is dependent on the former and also whether I think I want to live with two other people, then I'd be living with one person with pet mice and one person with a pet snake. We'd have to get them out at different times or there'd be a food chain in the living room...

Two species don't make much of a chain. On the other hand, snakes are said to taste like chicken. For that matter, humans have been called "long pig" by cannibals.
Title: Re: Warm and fuzzy open letters thread, Part I
Post by: Barmymoo on 13 Jan 2013, 15:29
Well the snake would go for the ferret, and the ferret might go for the mice, and then the chain would break down because we're all vegetarians so none of the humans would eat the snake.

the snake would definitely go for the mice, but I don't think it could unhinge the jaw enough to fir a ferret unless it's a very large snake.  The ferret might gp after the snake all mongoose-like, but I think it would probably just try and hide under something...
Title: Re: Warm and fuzzy open letters thread, Part I
Post by: nekowafer on 13 Jan 2013, 16:55
The ferret would just want to play with both the mice and the snake, unless you've found one with an actual prey drive.

Yeah, ferrets have absolutely no concept of fear in the face of things that would normally eat them. It's why our cat got along with them so well, they just never knew they were prey.

My ferret Waffle, who was an itty bitty teeny little thing, just under 2 pounds, tried to play with a 50 pound dog. And of course played with my 12 and 14 pound cats. And before he got sick, he ruled the roost, kicking the butt of Elvis, my fattest ferret to date.

Dear neighborhood dog,

Your unfailing joy and friendliness are an inspiration, but do you give yourself enough credit for providing an emotional anchor to a 13-year-old who lost both her parents?

The description I'm gathering of ferrets right now is one of a more annoying but more friendly (and less "I'm going to jump on you and claw the shit out of you to climb your arm up to your desk so you will love me" (this has happened to me)) version of a cat.

That's so god damn adorable.

Seriously. SO dumb. And they have bad eyesight so if you have one on your shoulder be careful because he might try to jump off. But they can also be super clever, especially if it involves either food or escape.

I love cats too, my two big boys are awesome. They want love all the damn time but are mostly gentle about it. The ferrets don't necessarily want love/affection... they want you to play with them and chase them. Or run away squealing because apparently that is just hilarious to a ferret.

What ferrets really want you to do is leave all of your socks and chocolate covered nuts laying unattended for a few minutes. You'll find them eventually. Maybe.

Ferrets are awesome. I cannot keep them because my girl is allergic. But otherwise ...

Besides, a two year old (one of which we have) is comparable in energy level to a ferret.

Yeah my ferrets' "treats" are 1) getting to give me kisses after I've eaten something yummy and 2) getting socks thrown at them. Though they also have tons of toys of their own, but they're not nearly as fascinating as SOCKS.

I talk to my cats and ferrets in their language as well... I copy the cats when they make weird noises, like merp and murfle and meh. And the ferrets of course I dook at. Or just sing them songs. It all looks and sounds pretty ridiculous.

My boyfriend thinks I'm weird. Hell, I think I'm weird.

I had a very long conversation with one of my cats about food when I was most recently at my mum's. She looked a little perplexed and kept telling me "I'm hungry!" and I kept saying "I'm hungry too!" in cat, and we just went back and forth until she realised that I wasn't going to give her any food.

When I was in middle school I had two ferrets.  I went to an urban public school and so each day every Xth person (where x is a random number between 3 and) was scanned with a handheld metal detector and had their bag searched.  One day, in class, I dug around in my backpack to find a pen and found 3 socks, a barbie head and a pocket knife.  My bag had obviously been used as a ferret stash the night before without me noticing.  If I had been scanned that morning the pocket knife would have gotten me suspended for the rest of the year, and possible sent to the school for troublemakers.

Tell us a little more.

The 13-year-old suddenly appeared in the neighborhood because our neighbors were in her parents's will as emergency guardians. Her father died suddenly of a heart attack. I forget how and when she lost her mother. We keep meeting her as she walks the dog, a small beaglish thing. It was months and months before the first time we saw her smile.

nekowafer: the human orientation toward making friends with animals is probably the reason we have survived as a species.

I talk to my animals in both their language and mine. One of the reasons I miss my cat Waffles is because we'd have conversations. He'd meow, I'd say something back, he'd meow, etc. I can do this a few times with Hobbes and Kisa, but Waffles would go on and on, I loved it.

Spatz (the younger of the two cats who recently passed away) used to complain.  All the time.  At least, it always sounded like she was complaining.  I'd answer her, ask "What?  What's wrong?", listen for a few, and then explain how I couldn't really help more if she wasn't going to be more specific.  We could keep it going for quite a while...

Meanwhile I'd feed her, pet her, whatever it seemed she wanted.  It never stopped the complaining, though!

We used to have a cat who (as soon as we were awake, but before we actually got out of bed) would complain loudly.  I interpreted this as her saying. "Nobody has ever fed me in my entire life", and "Nobody has ever petted me in my entire life", and "Nobody has ever let me out in my entire life".

She would continue complaining as I petted her, fed her and let her out.

I believe that her major complaint was not being let out, because when she came back in, she would not complain anymore until the next morning.

Hobbes doesn't have conversations. He just bellows to himself every once in a while. Kisa will meow at me when I open the bathroom door, but then will run away when I try to exit said bathroom. (She waits outside every time one of us goes in there.) She looks confused when I meow at her and Hobbes generally looks disinterested. Unless we make fun of this weird "wawa" sound he sometimes makes, then he looks offended.

I think the fact that George Ferris- the inventor of arguably the most romantic invention on the planet- was born on Valentine's Day is the cutest coincidence ever. My favorite animal coupling in the doodle is the octopus and the duck. That cracked me up.

And Neko- d'awwwww. Thanks! Takes one to know one

Dear Eva and Tom,
thank you for still being around despite all the shit I threw in your way. I know we had times when we barely got along, but I can't tell you how much your friendship means to me. I am aware that I sometimes have problems with how close you still are despite being together for so long, but know that I'm not acting out of unacceptance. Instead, the irritation and anger was always directed at myself, for failing to have what seems to come so easily to you. I struggled for a very long time with my past, and seeing your joy made me miss that which I couldn't have.
Despite everything, you have always been there for me. I thank you from the bottom of my heart for helping me to learn to continue, and wish you the very best and more.

yours, Mp.

Dear Dave,

We've never met, and I only know you as a friend of my wife's from high school.  But when you heard about what happened with our van, you offered us the one you used to use to pull your camper - a spare vehicle that's a bit old, but in really good shape.  I appreciate that you're only asking what a junkyard would pay you for it for scrap - $300 for a decent running car is a blessing in our situation.

I'll be climbing on a greyhound later this week - it's a shame you live down in VA, a 7 hour trip by car (so 13 on the bus).  But It will be a pleasure to meet you!

I did meet some lovely and companionable Japanese women over there, my friend Tomoko in particular. You know you're at the start of a great relationship with a new friend when you spend an hour and a half talking using only thirty odd words of English, thirty odd words of Japanese and google translate to communicate.
