Haven't seen Yelling Bird in awhile.

I imagine throwing hammers is like throwing axes: extremely fun and destructive; if I don't buy any gear at Ren Faires, much of my money goes to the throwing ax booth (and archery range).

yes indeed. thank you sir, for helping rescue our dear artist from his self-destructive habits.

really though, it is good to hear that he's relaxing a bit. i hate to see creative people grind themselves down by continually forcing productivity.

of course, now i'm kind of wondering if yelling bird is & has always been jeph giving public voice to his inner daemons. and we've all just been laughing at it for all these years.

Thing is, Jeph did a great job conveying Pintsize's attitudes and expressions with little more than the vacant eyes, the straight-line mouth and one or two variations of the open mouth; mostly it was context and body attitude. Could be interesting to see where he takes Pintsize's new expressiveness.

To be fair to her, punching Pintsize upon meeting him is an entirely reasonable response.
With the way Pintsize carries on, I'm surprised it's not more people's first reaction to him.

Panel 1: Nice to see Hanners' tan evened out.

For comic #2340... (https://questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=2340)

1. Marigold looks very "rowr-y" in panel #1

2. "Tannelore" continues on.  Wonder how long Jeph will have that bit last?

3. Emily's "donk" face in panel #3 amused and entertained me.

4. Emily's teary face in panel #4 is cute and amusing too.

5. Marten certainly has his fill of non-sequitur friends these days.

Does Momo really need "watching"?

Pintsize, yes, of course; but is Momo going to get herself into trouble in the apartment on her own?

Or is Marigold still thinking of her as a child?  Perhaps the new chassis hasn't sunk into her habitual conversation yet.

Emily dun broke Pintsize but good. Probably needs her hand x-rayed too.

The question is, what lesson will she learn from this?

1) Don't hit Pintsize on the head anymore

2) Wear hand protection when hitting Pintsize on the head

Or is she such a cloudcuckoolander that she'll forget this whole experience and do it again later?

3a. She will forget entirely only to suddenly remember, milliseconds from impact, stop and pull a mail gauntlet from her purse, saying "now I remember why I keep this in there!"
Then kiss Pitsize on the forehead and skip off, entirely forgetting to continue hitting him.

Maybe Pintsize was could see it coming from Faye and Marigold (after all, they were provoked), but he hadn't really even got started with Emily when she cranked out the surprise hammer fist.

Very Scott Pilgrim-ish touch there, too.

Or, maybe Marigold *told* Emily about the "woob woob" incident, and she was looking for an excuse for some payback.

I know Pintsize can be a real shit sometimes, and I know that it's a comic so har har, but if someone I hardly know came into my home for the first time and almost immediately punched one of my best friends in the head as hard as she could, she would not be staying in my home very long. I certainly wouldn't be giving her a bag of peas to ice her hand.

Even if AIs weren't sentient, even if Pintsize was nothing more than a piece of property, I'd still be kicking Emily out.

I think Marten is standing up up for Pintsize with his last line. Even if Pintsize's head was soft, punching it with the force she did would probably still have caused some damage. I was amused by the strip and the expression on Emily and Marten in the last panel is drawn really well, although character-wise I don't like Emily as much as I did.

Neither Marigold nor The Pugnacious Peach hit him hard enough to injure their hands. This may be a new level of impact.

How will Marigold react? She is sensitive to AnthroPC abuse, but may have made a permanent exception for Pintsize.

They may have been more prepared for hitting a hard object. You punch soft thing differently to hard things.

f(0) := 0
f(1) := 1
f(n) := f(n-1)+f(n-2), n >= 2

I know that's pretty much the definition of that sequence, but it's also one of the (if not the) slowest known algorithms for generating a the Fibonacci sequence. IIRC, it also uses a lot more storage than other methods as well.

I just had to remind myself that, in comic time, the gang woke up "this morning" at the lake house (either that or Marten doesn't change his shirts very often).

Which might help explain why Hanners is still looking a bit dazed and confused, whatever the state of her pigmentation.

It's been an interesting day in QCHampton.

Actually, though, that scenario makes less sense than Padma/Marten did.  She's an intern under him, and while such a thing isn't unheard of, a) it's sexual harassment, and b) WAY OOC for Marten!

Not necessarily; but people are lazy these days and use presumptions of guilt rather than looking at the case.  My mother married her professor; and even to suggest that sexual harassment was involved would be utterly ludicrous.

Marigold and Momo must share an extremely limited closet space. It's not as if Mari is a clothes-horse; her wardrobe seems to be very limited. Jeph's comment on today's strip is a little odd. Momo, unlike Pintsize, has always worn clothes.

Not necessarily. Those could've been permanent clothes attached to the chassis. (we've never seen the old Momo chassis without those clothes, have we? Oo)
Except... for modding freaks in the QC world a model with such clothing limits would've been a letdown.

Even if Momo has always worn clothes, in the old chassis her clothes were much smaller and presumably couldn't be hung up in a closet or she couldn't reach them. Now that she's human-sized they're probably both using the same storage space.

Jeph's comment on today's strip is a little odd. Momo, unlike Pintsize, has always worn clothes.

Unless he changed it before I saw it, Jeph's comment specifically says "full sized clothing." Momo's entire wardrobe, even if it were fairly large, could probably have fit in a single drawer when she had the smaller chassis. Now that she is human-sized, she needs more space.

That said, you're right. Mari seems to wear the same few things, so I can't imagine she's using a lot of closet space.

Also, I agree with the comments that Marigold looks particularly cute today. I think the suggestion that it is because she's at home and, therefore, more relaxed might be true. But, she typically slouched forward even at home.

The fact that she's wearing a tank top that appears to fit her properly -- as opposed to her usual oversized t-shirt -- probably doesn't hurt. It could also contribute to her appearing slimmer than usual, since oversized clothes tend to make you look larger and less-shapely than you really are.

Yelling Bird's secret (http://foulomatic.hnldesign.nl).

EDIT: I suggest that the next poll be about where Pintsize sleeps.

EDIT: Why do they go into sleep mode anyway? It's not a necessity, at least not for Momo. Maybe they get bored when their human friends are conked out, but they have the entire Internet to play on, and AnthroPC-specific chat rooms. If they can just go to sleep when they're bored like (some) cats, why does Pintsize get into trouble?

Wall scrolls are one of the primary types of anime merchandise. They're usually much more complicated of course, but Jeph can't 5 hours drawing them every time. Here's someone talking about them and showing one off: http://otakudan.com/2009/12/new-wall-scroll.html

At least Momo presumably needs to recharge her batteries. Possibly also back herself up into cloud storage? Run housekeeping tasks? Or perhaps Carl is correct and above a certain level all intelligences need to shut down external inputs (after all, we don't die when we go to sleep, our brains are quite active) to integrate the experiences of the day, and dream of electric sheep.

I was actually more impressed that Marigold was aware enough to ask, that hasn't always been the case.
+1 Insightful

Now compare with the Emily/Pintsize interaction earlier on.

In one case, treatment as an equal, in the other as an object.

From Momo's expression, she's pretty pleased that Marigold so effortlessly made the transition. Possibly because she's a fundamentally nice person.

For extra credit - is Pintsize naturally a Fratboy Jerk, or is there something a bit less obnoxious beneath, hidden by a defence mechanism? Call that an exercise in seeing AIs as equals....  because we shouldn't give AIs lattitude that we wouldn't give others, nor deny them consideration.

I think you're underthinking it, actually.

They're both running the "AI sentience" program, admittedly on different chipsets.  But you're distinguishing them based on their chassis... and that's a little bit racist!

Yay for Avenue Q references!

But android is just a descriptor - a robot made to both look and act human - and Pintsize doesn't meet the definition because he doesn't look human (whether he acts human is a question for a criminal psychologist.)

Seems to be a little tension between Momo and Pintsize - if this was a "wacky" comedy, this would be the cue that they'd be hooked up/paired off by the end of the flick.

Since this is not a wacky comedy, she's likely just irritated.

Come to think of it, have we ever seen Pintsize actually "sleep", or more specifically, find someplace to stand still and go idle? The only instances I can remember where he's been in a bedroom were expressly for the purposes of harassing someone (MAKEUP SEX NAO!, "Do you want to be the outer spoon?", "I know this is a bad time, but...") or doing something odd. Perhaps he never goes idle at all and simply spends his nights surfing the internet for porn, huh?
Of course, the same argument can be made for Winslow, but it's assumed his occupations would be more innocent. That, and the fact that he occasionally reinforces the fact that he's an Apple product makes me assume he might just go on standby until someone pushes his buttons.

I wonder what our attitude to Pintsize would be if his chassis was more humaniform?

How has our attitude towards Momo been shaped by her appearance?

I'm acutely aware of how attitudes are affected by physical appearance, even though logically they shouldn't be.

I'm also aware that this is a comic, but the author obviously is exploring deep issues, and I may not be over-analysing.

Generally speaking, the more human something appears, the more responsible we hold it for its actions.

If Pintsize were more anthropomorphic his antics would probably be less tolerated.

Momo would probably be viewed about the same if her chibi form looked less human, but it wasn't just the new chassis that led to her getting a job and going out and doing all that human stuff she suddenly started doing. People treat her with more respect; no more peeking up her skirt, for instance.

The dent in the wall in the corner.    2 (8.7%)
Marten's room. Usually on the floor next to the dresser.    1 (4.3%)

In a lead-lined box at the bottom of the ocean. (He keeps coming back.)    1 (4.3%)

He is Celing Cat. He sneaks in via the overhead fan.    2 (8.7%)
He sleeps on the couch, now that Faye isn't using it.    1 (4.3%)
He sleeps with the waffles!    4 (17.4%)

Momo no longer has The Pugnacious Peach tossing her in the air like a toy, but Emily played with her belly button and Clinton objectified her and intruded into personal space so much that we saw the first use of her taser against a human.

(moderator)Overanalyzing is specifically authorized by the owner of the forum(/moderator). ZoeB's point is also sound.

Winslow is treated more respectfully than Pintsize despite looking like an iPod. There's a dark possibility that Momo was mistreated because she's female. There might be a deepseated human weakness of disregarding non-human consciousness, but while animal cruelty is way too common most people are decent with cats and horses.

Faye was decent on her first meeting with Pintsize. Raven called him "little robot thing" but from context was being friendly.

Cats and horses are people in a different form.

You do NOT mess with cats, because they will mess you up hardcore and eat your corpse.

And dogs.

Dogs are the best of human nature, distilled into a bundle of sensory overload.

Didn't she had detachable pigtails, or was that a feature on her previous chassis?

Neither, it was hypothesized and joked about in the forum, but never happened in the comic.

#2251 was the last time she was shown with "human" round bubbles. Since #2275, her next appearance, she's been square-bubbled, like Pintsize.

Hi QC readers, I've been reading the strip for a couple years now and saw a reference to one of my favorite fantasy series'(unless there is something else that I don't know about in which that reference was made), and felt the need to comment as nobody seems to have mentioned it as one of the 'callbacks' Jeph talked about on his tweety thing. The lead-lined box at the bottom of the ocean refers to something that happened in the final book of a series written by David Eddings called the Elenium in which the 'jewel of power' of which the story revolves around gets locked in this box and tossed in the ocean at a remote location to prevent the protagonists from gaining it's power. the lead lining of the box was supposed to stifle the jewels magic powers . The box ends up getting recovered in the next series the Tamuli. Talking about it now makes me want to try and find those books because it was a really good couple of series' and deserves rereading.

Except that, for the Bhelliom, it was iron-lined.

Considering how off even the other characters consider them, I don't think Emily or Clinton really count as baseline examples.

I think Winslow may be treated more respectfully because he looks like an ipod. At the very least, he doesn't have a skirt like Momo does.

You are correct, it has been about 10 years since I read the series,  my mistake.....in the immortal words of Emily Litella...nevermind.

I will try very hard not to screw up then, but I've just been proven to have a faulty memory so the next stop on train for me will probably be Geezerville.

Does even Marten have a completely accepting attitude toward AnthroPCs? He assumed the LANPARK couldn't produce a coffee worth trying.

Let's be fair here - most anthroPCs can't taste, and we've seen no evidence that any of them had a sense of smell. It'd be a bit like someone asking me to cook them a steak... I'd just have no idea what constituted a good steak.

Eh, you can recognize and accept someone's right to be considered a person while not liking the way they make coffee.

Don't think it was ever explicitly said, but it might be that Marten's PNG'd there after Pintsize lasered up the place.

I think it's a safe assumption that he hasn't tried it, no.

The line he gives Hannelore is *REALLY* racist if taken out of context. Only sort of racist once you factor Pintsize back in to the equation.
