A new year, a new Mafia game! Games 1 (http://forums.questionablecontent.net/index.php/topic,28503.0.html) and 2 (http://forums.questionablecontent.net/index.php/topic,28549.0.html) were successful... for the villains. Let's see if the villagers can catch up, yes?
Recap: Mafia is a game traditionally composed of two factions, the village, the majority who do not know their own members, and the mafia, the minority who know their own members. The mafia aim to kill villagers during the night until only their own remain. Meanwhile, the villagers vote on who to lynch during the day in order to weed out the mafia scum. Lynches occur when over half the players vote on a target.
Though the mafia may have the ability to kill a villager once a night, some villagers gets roles of their own whether it be discerning the role of another person or the ability to protect a fellow player from getting killed.
Game 3 has the minimum of 14 once again, but as I've stated before, I'd like to play a custom version. It would be based on the Nasuverse and requires 17+ players. More is better, as the mischief and chaos possible with so many is pretty much endless. And there are more roles that way, too. To up the challenge, roles will not be announced beforehand. If we can't get to 17, we'll play a smaller custom game based on a different world instead.
Let's play a game.

-
yes, please!
-
I'm in.
-
Aight, I'm in.
-
In!
-
This. Me. Yes.
-
I'm game
-
I'll join up to see if we can get seventeen for that custom game.
-
In.
-
I'm so in.
-
I'm there.
-
We're more than halfway there overnight! Just seven more to go! :-D
-
I'm in. Hopefully I'll last longer this time.
-
Me too. Sign me up. Maybe this time I'll get past the first round.
-
sign me up boss.
-
Four more sacrifices and we'll be able to start the game! Come one, come all, and play the game of a lifetime!
If any mods feel shy about participating due to their responsibilities, don't! You'll be treated equally within the game, up and including gruesome demises! So come one, come all!
-
Why not... put me down!
-
As much as I'm intrigued from watching the previous games, it's not my cup of tea. Pass, sorry.
-
OK, I think I will take part in this game. I'm saying this somewhat reluctantly because I'm not sure I'll be very good at it, and I'm concerned I might get confused what I'm meant to do when, but I'll try!
-
I'm with May - still not sure I entirely understand these games, but I'll give it a try too.
-
We're on the threshold! Just one more player, and we're "gold."
Carl-E, weren't you going to play? The former Godfather should attempt to redeem himself.
-
One more person, folks! That's all we need to play the game. Surely there's one more person in QC brave enough to risk it all for the thrill of outwitting your fellows?
-
I really want to, and I really can't right now. Things opened up at the community college, I have two classes to prep for, and one online...
-
Count me in, amigos.
-
Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeees!
Alright, my friends, pray to the random number generator, things gonna get interesting!
-
Deaths orchestrated. I think it helps set the mood, don't y'all?
Also, sorry, Barmymoo. You didn't really get a chance to play. :(
-
You gonna cross through people's names as they go down, BSword?
-
BS-word?

-
Ah well, I was worried it might take up too much time anyway. I did try to warn you guys - clearly someone didn't like what I was saying... or something...
-
You gonna cross through people's names as they go down, BSword?
That's being done in the main thread.
-
Yeah, I saw that BSword changed that shortly after I asked.
-
Down I go WHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
-
I've been called BS, I've been called Blackie, I've been called sword, but this is a first at being called BSword.
-
I do what I can. /flex!
-
You're growing on me, you cunt.
-
I'm that fungus on your left foot!
Not the patch on your right foot though. He's a jerk.
-
I do find it funny that y'all are voting "to balance it up" when it says in black and white on my death announcement that at least one character (mine) has the power to increase the strength of their vote by using words only BS will recognise. So yeah, that might not work, kids...
-
ooh, so someone might swing anyway?
-
Can I make a proposal that might make things easier for everyone, but especially Black Sword? Can we vote like this: I vote *insert name here*. It doesn't have to be red, but at least the text would stand out more than just bolded.
-
I like the red. It seems a suiting colour to murder someone to.
-
I second this... And the use of blood red for murdering works.
-
Linds <3
yes, red bold text will stand out much more cleanly. Though had it been in play beforehand, you'd have died. :psyduck:
I'm still keeping the majority vote rule. It makes for a slow start for the game, but once everyone warms up, the bloodbath starts and I am duly entertained.
-
Well, if Pat was actually trying to create a tie, he would have seen the votes too and probably wouldn't have voted. (Also I think the vote that was missed was dr. nervioso. I accidentally wrote riccostar.) But either way - oh well! I've actually gotten kind of busy recently, so it wouldn't have bothered me too much. :)
-
I was sort of looking forward to swinging! :( It's okay though I'm sure I will be killed by my loving neighbors soon enough.
ALso big reveal guys: Linds and I win if we keep the voting to a standstill for a few days. >_>
-
I KNEW IT!
VOTE de_linds
Problem solved!
-
Does voting No Lynch count as a vote to lynch an immortal target so that if there are (fex.) 4 No Lynch, 3 Linds, 2 dlN, nobody would be lynched? Or is it that voting No Lynch is the same as not voting at all and will always lose?
-
Oh, good point. I may just be making up rules.
-
Due to a crapton of work on my plate at work, I won't be able to put the proper creativity and care into updating the post for another 8 or 10 hours. I apologize for my tardiness. m(_-_)m
-
There's a simple solution to the counting problem: make the decision to lynch a poll. The poll starts with everyone's name in it, and a single vote allowed; vote changing can be allowed; the current totals are visible to all; after any death, the entries for those names are deleted and the poll is reset. Of course, this enables anonymous voting, but you have the option to explain your vote in the thread to try to get support.
-
That would be the perfect solution.... if anonymous voting didn't make it easy for mafia to vote and then lie which was theirs.... or people outside the game intruding... not that I would think that would be an issue on this forum, but it would leave the possibility open. Which could all be double checked by having everyone post who they voted for and throwing out the inconsistencies, but then that kind of puts us back at square one anyway.
-
Isn't there an option to make it...not anonymous? Besides that, it seems like it would be fairly against the rules to lie about your vote.
-
Sorry, no. I do realise it would be a change to how things are at present - just a suggestion for an alternative.
-
Game updated. Sorry, all, just had a long work day and really tired.
-
Well, if Pat was actually trying to create a tie, he would have seen the votes too and probably wouldn't have voted. (Also I think the vote that was missed was dr. nervioso. I accidentally wrote riccostar.) But either way - oh well! I've actually gotten kind of busy recently, so it wouldn't have bothered me too much. :)
Honesty time: I was being lazy (sue me), going only by the tally that Overlord Swordsley was keeping for us.
-
It seems like in order to do anything fun in this game, you've got to get killed :psyduck:
-
Ow.
And that is all I have to say until the game is over! :D
-
*ghost high-five*
At first I was pissed that I got killed, but when you think about it, we get to hang out and bum drinks off the lord while everyone else scrambles to find meaning in everything. Suckers.
-
So basically, de_la_Nae is going to chill out with henri bemis? I'm sure it'll be quite a knight. :-D
-
For virtue of terrible punning, I vote Black Sword.
-
I dub thee Unicorn, crusader against punishment.
I can do that, because I'm a motherfucking knight.
-
I swear to god I will punt you straight into the punitentiary.
-
Y'all just jealous.
-
As an outside observer, I'm chuckling at the logic in this game so far.
-
Told you so.
-
Sorry for the delay, folks. Didn't have interwebs yesterday for some reason. Writing up the update now.
-
YAY! My bones are all shriney and pretty now!
-
Villagers are getting their asses handed to them in every single game.
in dr. nervioso's case, quite literally.
-
I want to say things, but I can't! ARRGH. I was spoiled by surviving to the bitter end for the first two games.
-
I know I've said it before but I have absolutely no idea how we were supposed to win this one.
-
Villagers have to somehow figure out who's lying and who's telling the truth, while the "Evil Ones" have to try to deceive the villagers convincingly that they aren't evil, and are only mere villagers.
This game would probably be 100x easier if it was done face-to-face, as it would be much easier to tell when someone's lying (or just are a bunch of bad actors/actresses.
Of course, on the same token, I work with a bunch of habitual liars on a daily basis, so I'd probably be able to bluff my way to victory if I was on the "evil" side.
Just an observation from a neutral observer...
-
Logical. It doesn't really answer my question though. :-P
-
Wow, this actually is the earliest henri's been taken out. I guess we'll just wait until the bitter end to hear his raaaaage. Although it seems death is the most enlightening thing about this whole game, since I've gotten a number of "shoot, I'm dead, and I figured this out, whyyyyy" PMs.
Anyway, idontunderstand, it's pretty much as jwhouk said. Even now, there's still a chance the villagers can turn things around, so long as they play smart.
I really want to jw play this game now.
-
*speaks from the grave* Guys, lynch the ones who voted for me. They did so pretty much on a whim, without any evidence at all. Linds especially is suspicious, she didn't give any reason at all!
-
*speaks from the grave* Guys, lynch the ones who voted for me. They did so pretty much on a whim, without any evidence at all. Linds especially is suspicious, she didn't give any reason at all!
Yeah, I agree. Not sure how much I'm allowed to talk as a dead person, but I had been planning to vote for Game and Watch and got killed before I could.
-
Since you mentioned me by name, it's a little hard to post this and still seem neutral, however...
8. Dead men tell no tales (no dead players can post in the game thread or talk about the knowledge they gained from playing the game)
My interpretation of the above is pretty much if you're dead, don't post anything that you know could affect the game or those still playing it. Of course, it's our GM's call what is and isn't acceptable.
-
*speaks from the grave* Guys, lynch the ones who voted for me. They did so pretty much on a whim, without any evidence at all. Linds especially is suspicious, she didn't give any reason at all!
I gave a reason. You should have spoken up sooner!
-
It's borderline, since it's not quite knowledge from the game so much as declaration of intent before demise, but it's close enough to constitute influencing the game from beyond the grave.
*hands cesium a gag order on who he wanted to lynch*
-
Hehe, alrighty then, I'll shut up.
You're all dead meat though. :parrot:
-
Black Sword: as I pointed out, I'd be much better at this game IRL than online. I also have the disadvantage of working 10:30 pm - 6:30 am local.
-
well, that happened
-
It did. Was it a satisfying way to go, at least?
-
I have still got absolutely no idea what is going on in this game. At one point my theory was that there just weren't any bad guys but clearly I was wrong.
-
It did. Was it a satisfying way to go, at least?
if you gots to go, best go out with style.
i was really looking forward to the full moon though
-
It was a good fight against a clearly worthy opponent. If I had to go, it certainly needed to be that way. :-D
-
Was I right at all? I think I was a little bit but its hard to be sure because what in the name of the great fuck happened?
-
That was thoroughly epic. In at least two senses of the word.
Black Sword, you totally have to write scenes for all the other possible battles.
-
Please write my battle :( I mean, I know I just flat out died. But IMAGINE a battle for me! I want magical battle powers!
-
I'll try, but most of the deaths resulting in battles fall under "miracle" territory, if not straight up asspull country. XD
-
I wanna die in a battle... But I guess I'll have to settle for a hangin' because everybody hates me.
-
so tomorrow I will be having light surgery. I don't know if I will have a chance to post. When does this day end?
-
Day after tomorrow.
-
ok, with any luck I'll manage to get online in time to get a vote in.
-
Barmymoo's death scene had that 1% chance happened was actually pretty easy to write.
It was obvious in the darkness. The moment Friar Barmymoo saw J, it was clear that this person no longer followed the path of God. J had abandoned humanity for demonic power. Nothing more needed to be said. Friar Barmymoo was marked for death.
(http://tindeck.com/image/rcbv/stats.png) (http://tindeck.com/listen/rcbv)
Still, within the house of God, for a believer in whom Christ dwelt, who carried upon him a sacred relic, a miracle could be performed.
The Friar led the monster deeper into the Church, making inconsequential talk. It was almost a grotesque comedy, how his last words would be so mundane toward such an awful monster. J himself seemed sardonically amused, his answers easy, relaxed. Soon, he would make his move.
The relic was a Key of Providence, a simple rope that Saint France himself had used to turn a blood drinker back to ash. It was wrapped around Barmymoo's right arm. It took less than a moment for the Friar to undo the knot. It would take a few moments to use, but he had to get close enough to J without raising suspicion. The how of it eluded Barmymoo until divine inspiration struck.
Barmymoo stopped before the crucifix and apologized for not having embraced J, a brother in Christ. Arms open wide, Barmymoo watched an awful smile bloom on J's face. The embrace felt like death, but the Friar was prepared. The holy Key of Providence was quickly wrapped around J's waist. The moment of surprise from J was enough for Barmymoo to begin. " I kill, I give life. I injure, I heal. There are none who escape from my hands. There are none who escape from my eyes. May it be so that you are shattered. I welcome the defeated, the aged. Surrender to me, learn from me, obey me."
Fangs sank into Barmymoo's throat, but that was not enough to stop a Friar in his holy duty! Even as J drank Barmymoo's blood, the secret rite emerged from pale lips. "May you be at rest. Do not forget the song, do not forget the prayer, do not forget me. I relieve you of all burdens. May it be so that there is no deception."
Even as lifeforce was stolen by the desperate J, who could not escape the binding of the sacred Key of Providence, Barmymoo continued the holy work. Death would come, but with death, so would heaven. " Retaliation unto forgiveness, betrayal unto belief, despair unto hope, darkness unto light, death unto life. May you rest in my hands. Let there be mark of your sins. Eternal life is found only in death. Forgiveness is before you, and so my incarnation vows."
With the last bit of life, the Friar finishes. "Kyrie Eleison."
A sacrament, a miracle of God derived from faith. The teachings of God are the greatest weapons against spirits. The Key of Providence that eliminates wandering souls. It sublimated the eternal and damned life of the Dead Aposle with great mercy.
Only ashes remained of J as Barmymoo's lifeless body fell to the floor.
edit: added music. Everyone else had it, after all!
-
J, you sod, you killed me!
(I love my battle story, thank you!).
-
Why did GWF keep switching between Hebrew and Greek? I know those were the languages that the Bible was written in originally, but it just seems kind of odd.
-
I put points into both summoner subclasses, thinking that would give me an advantage in battle. Clearly I was wrong.
-
Hey kids, it's time for Black Sword's Knowledge Corner! Today we're tackling demonology!
"El Elohim...(etc.)" is an extract from the Grimoire of Armadel. It was actually omitted from the translation of another grimoire (one of the Solomons) by the translator. He figured it didn't belong. In general, the long, torturous chant is a way to depict a very powerful spell by drawing on existing systems of magic.
The demons, for those with some knowledge, are chronicled in the Ars Goetia. In order, they were Eligor, Flauros, and Andras. The short chant was used to show GWF could summon dukes of hell to do his dirty work quickly, while Andras, a marquis (outranks dukes) required more effort. Andras is supposed to be very powerful, yet very dangerous to the summoner, a desperation move he had the foresight to do. The bit of Latin GWF used translates literally as "rise, spirits!"
The short chant is composed of the letters of God's name spoken aloud while simultaneously referencing the origin of the Shin Megami Tensei franchise, the horror novel Megami Tensei (http://menasepublications.blogspot.com/2010/09/reincarnation-of-goddess.html). Never officially translated, the first two books were translated by a fan. There's a bounty for a translation of the third.
Basically, Rule of Cool mixed with Functional Magic.
Or you can go with his explanation, either or.
-
so, what. did everybody die or something?
-
Sorry about that. Had a busy weekend. I'll write another "what might have been" death scene to make up for it.
-
Aww.
-
I think I've figured out my frustration over this game: it tends to be random initially, which then eliminates possible avenues of strategy that put you either behind or ahead from the start.
It kinda reminds me a bit of playing Monopoly, if that's too much of a stretch. The two most important things in Monopoly that determine success and/or failure is who succeeds in gaining and building up the first monopoly, and then which player bankrupts first - and to whom that player's assets revert to.
WRT Mafia, it all depends on determining who is who before you lose too many villagers/villains, and then it becomes attrition. Unfortunately, there's no adequate way of determining who is who without revealing who YOU might really be.
That's the frustration of the game - you need to really roleplay at the start to figure out who's who - before you start losing people. Equating that to my Monopoly example: you need to start buying up properties right away, then trade and deal to get properties you need, realizing some are more valuable than others. Just letting things go randomly will cause you to lose, especially after the villain side makes its first move.
-
I prefer Mafia myself, though. The games are shorter than Monopoly.
-
Perhaps a variant of the game which could deal with that is maybe having a first post thing where everyone introduces themselves? Obviously people could lie (and in fact probably should, to avoid showing their hand) but it would give people something to go on and make it a bit more fun.
-
I think that would be a very good idea.
-
It's a good idea, but I'd rather not make it a rule. I'd rather have as few restricting rules as possible (which is my argument against the suggestion for a "no votes to tie the score" rule as well), as I feel the game plays out more interesting and dynamic that way. On the other hand, If someone just decides to introduce themselves, others will follow, and it will probably look suspicious not to do it.
-
The problem with playing mafia online is when you get a bunch of players who rarely post and a bunch of players that do. When you're face to face, it's easier to call people out on being too quiet, but when you're online, it's difficult to tell whether or not it's a strategy of if the person is way too busy irl to play the game.
-
Welp, all the votes are in. My problem is what to do with this night. Originally, if we reached this night and J was still alive, I expected there to be far fewer players left. I would have revealed J's identity and had his special ability kick in to wipe out the remnants of the village. Now we gotta settle for a much smaller spectacle that won't be nearly as satisfying.
Thanks, J. Thanks a lot. :x
-
Haha! Well you're all fucked now, ya little bastards!
-
Ever since you were the last man standing in the first game, TED, they keep wanting to make you the bad guy. It's like they're all convinced that with your name, it's too obvious for you not to be a bad guy. They reverse-psychology themselves into murderin' ya.
-
I know, and it keeps biting them in the ass. Its great! :-D
-
/me wonders if TheEvilDog is always forced out of an evil role for lulz
-
To be fair, I was the last one standing in the first game, and I was one of the mafia. So it isn't like "TED playing a villain? No chance!"
Certainly didn't help in the second game, which focused on werewolves.
-

I take offense to this! It's not J's fault he's dead, it's mine.
Linds pretty much nails why I think forum mafia can be rather difficult if people choose to be quiet. Though people here seem to be pretty good about letting others know if they'll be away due to real life issues, so it might be safe to assume they're just being quiet unless they say otherwise.
Whenever I get the GM baton (do we have an official list out there? I know a handful of us expressed interest in the previous sign up topic), I definitely want to give a forum version of The Resistence a go. It's mission based and only a subset of the entire group goes on each mission, so you can learn a lot based on who happened to be on the failed missions. Each team is chosen by a leader (a role that rotates, so everyone will usually have a turn) and each team has to be approved by a mandatory vote, so you pretty much can't get by on complete silence (at the very least everyone will have the chance to learn who you think is trustworthy).
-
I think if Black Sword wants to take a break after this game, Linds was the first to offer to run a game, then yourself and then me.
-
I'm definitely taking a break! I do believe that's the general order for GM-ship.
Anyway, when it comes to forum Mafia, it's basically a good idea to start out by lynching lurkers. It thins the pool of people who won't be helpful and can force the bad guys into making stupid moves or saying dumb things, which become tells. Innocents might be lost, but they weren't being useful, so oh well.
by the way, henri? When you protected Linds all those nights ago? Yeah, she stabbed you in the back.
-
It was an accident.
-
Like what? You were walking along with the blade and tripped, accidentally plunging the blade into Henri's back?
Well in any case, who wants to run the next game?
-
I do not. I think I need a break before I run one. I also want to decide which version I want to do.
-
Game and Watch Forever, you are the next GM.
Of course, now that the game is over and Linds reveals that her saving throws suck, I get to right henri vs Linds double KO!
-
Okay, so looking at the the dates, this game went HILARIOUSLY!
Because think about it: BSword's message to linds about her conversion by J is on the 23. The very night J and GWF killed each other off.
So you know what that has to mean, right? In the same night that the Mages go after J, ending the Dead Apostle faction, he manages a last-minute conversion for the extra point!
-
Also, BSword, who was the last person I tried to check out with my awwwful attempts at being bandit-detective? I didn't have it set to save Sent Messages it turns out.
-
Nervioso was your last night stand. You barely escaped with your life from J before GWF decided you needed to chill out. :-D
Seriously, Linds had awful luck this round. Every victim she picked was on her side, she killed the doctor analog, and the only reason there weren't more villager victims at her hands was that the mages figured out she was the vigilante analog and blocked her moves. Then, just as it seemed that she'd get to leave the game, J scores a 1 in 10 chance and makes her his successor right before he and GWF double KO each other.
The Mafia gods were most displeased with Linds this round indeed.
-
No no, I sent you one more that I never got the info for because that was my night to take a chill pill.
Err...get my ice kicked, maybe?
-
I have Gareth and Nervioso as your two investigations. I don't have any others from you, though? Maybe you thought you'd get iced before you would get results?
-
Weird. Maybe I didn't hit send? Oh well, not too important.
Edit: Oh yeah, I guess I must have decided to let cooler heads prevail.
-
I got investigated, eh. Well, being so suspicious in real life doesn't help you in a Mafia game, clearly.
-
I was hoping to use you to save my neck from the noose. Because it didn't occur to me that there'd be more than 2 factions.
-
I have no idea how I'd go about that.
-
Black Sword, I have to say I think you do a really good job as GM. Mafia 2 here was the first online Mafia game I've played and I think you ran it really smoothly. :-D
-
Black Sword, buddy, thanks for running those awesome games! Hopefully what I end up doing will be at least half as interesting... more to come on that soon-ish.
