Hi!
Long time lurker here.
My girlfriend published her webcomic last week.

We are having trouble getting pageviews.
How would you promote a webcomic?
What kind of traffic should we expect?
Any other tips from the creative people here?

There are various webcomics websites that you can add your comic to or mention it at if you haven't already, such as The Webcomic List (http://thewebcomiclist.com), Just the First Frame (http://justthefirstframe.com), and Oh No Robot (http://ohnorobot.com). If you're willing to deal with dickheads, you can post your comic at Reddit (http://reddit.com/r/webcomics). If you are willing to put some money into promoting your comic, you can advertise via Project Wonderful (http://projectwonderful.com).
As for what you should expect in terms of pageviews... good luck. It's very hard to get anywhere with webcomics. Jeph Jacques got where is he because he was incredibly lucky. I've been doing my webcomic for a year, and admittedly I haven't promoted it aggressively. I get about 10 unique visitors per update. You can probably do much better than that, but chances are you're not going to earn a living from doing a webcomic anytime soon. I don't intend to discourage you; if you like doing your comic keep at it.

We are currently trying to push through social networks ( Facebook )
The problem is that we are isolating ourselves to our country ( Sweden ) when the larger market (i believe) is situated in the US
Are there any larger groups or forums for comic artists that you know of, just so we could start getting people from other countries?
Project Wonderful looks nice, going to look closer on that after work.

Now that you mention Facebook, I remembered about Webcomic Underdogs (https://www.facebook.com/groups/webcomicunderdogs/). It's a group of comic artists on Facebook that talk about various ways to promote comics.

Not that I was ever super awesome at getting page views, but I think one of the best things to do is find other comics and offer to do guest strips for them (or take them up on it when they ask for them). Often this can lead to permanent links from their site as well.
Of course, there's also Everyone Draw Mohammed Day. That wasn't why I did it, but it was a nice fringe benefit.

I've been putting a bit of money into Facebook advertising, (the $50 credit that I got for signing up to my host provider) and seem to be getting 4-5 new clicks to my site a day. Getting the word out is a slow process... keep updating, keep consistent and you will find your audience.

You can also put pages up on mirror sites (Smackjeeves, Comic Fury, etc). This will help get the name out there, but don't put too many pages since you want to be able to tell people "hey, to read the rest of the story, come to my official website of here..." And then link them.
Being active in communities is also very important. The good thing about webcomics is that readers can easily interact with the creators, and a lot of the times that makes them appreciate the work way more.

We started paying for advertisement through Project Wonderful.
Gets us a couple of clicks a day, so the reader base is growing.

Project wonderful is pretty hit and miss, but if you get the right market it can be gold... I've had 4000+ extra hits a day when I'm advertising on sites that match what my comic is about...
