Title: Holy crap, a [literal] tea party. By Blue.
Post by: Bluesummers on 13 Feb 2013, 21:32
It has just occurred to me that I spend WAAAAY too much time here. I mean look at the forum front page a minute ago:

Not that it's going to teach me any manner of restraint any time soon.

Does anyone else spend as much time here as I do?  :psyduck:

Well. You have very quickly overtaken my post count. I give you that. But neither of us is close to the "only pretending to work" -rating yet. :psyduck:

But the number of hours I have spent here in the past is higher than I care to admit. I delude myself into believing that it is so only because I occasionally left a window open, and then rushed to teach for a couple of hours...

Edit: 35 days 12 hrs and 40 minutes here

I think if I actually admitted how often I'm here, I'd be instantly deemed creepy.   :-P

And probably fired.  :-o

I think I censor myself too much though- if I didn't do that, I'd have a much higher post count. I can't even begin to count how many times I typed out a response and then just closed the window because it wasn't as good as it could have been and I just didn't feel like rewriting.

I think that if you don't explicitly log out (does anyone?) it times out at 15 minutes after your last interaction, so 15min is the smallest amount that it will add to that total; you could probably justify saying it's an overestimate...

I'm at a cool 32 days of online time here.

The logged in time v. active time is something I encounted perviously when looking at my Steam data.

I have spent 2317 hours playing Civ V, and far more playing IV.  I was feeling bad about it, but then Stephen reminded me that I frequently Alt+Tab out and wander off to class, leaving the game running.

27 days, 4 hours, 53 minutes logged in, over almost 8 years.
856 posts = 0.295 posts per day, but it looks like all the pre-CHATTER (Sandbox, etc.) posts have disappeared, so that's like 2 years' worth of inane prattling no longer available, thank god.

The sandbox went years ago.  Ben and I each went through a period of purging old threads that were embarrassing rather than illuminating.  Indeed, when Ben handed over to me, he suggested clearing out Chatter (or whatever it was called at that point) and starting afresh, which I thought was maybe a step too far!  Band is the area that has kept its history most complete.

I could set a job to automatically remove topics older than a certain age (set per forum), but haven't felt that it was necessary.

I cleaned up the members database a while ago (and I know Ben did a few years ago).  When I did it, 70% of the database consisted of people with zero posts - those with no posts who had last logged in over six months ago (I think) were deleted, which cut the database size down by more than half.  There is, of course, the possibility that those who have no posts but do log in are lurkers who like to have the forum software keep track of what posts they have read.
Title: Re: Holy crap, a new topic. By Blue.

I just checked, and I went a full three months between my first three posts and my fourth. But I was still reading the posts. I think it's important to account for lurkers. :) The ones who haven't logged in in more than six months probably aren't coming back. And if they do, what are the odds that they will actually remember their username and password?

Depends on where you live. Comma in these parts.

Here's a deal. You give up foot/pound/gallons and convert to metric. We give up  on decimal commas and start using a decimal point instead.

After that we only need to agree to disagree on the meaning of billion, trillion et cetera.
Title: Re: Holy crap, a new topic. By Blue.
Post by: Bluesummers on 18 Feb 2013, 06:10
How could a billion possibly be something other than a billion? :psyduck:

I spend my entire junior year chemistry class by pissing off the teacher, who insisted that metric was superior to the apothecary system (what's used in the United States), because there was "no link between units of measurement".

Truth be told, I do like metric more than standard U.S. measurements, but I was bound and determined to prove her wrong:

1 pint = 1 pound (assuming volume density 1:1 relative to water, same as 1mL = 1cm3.
1 gallon = 231 in3 (exactly 231...no rounding or whatever)

She did eventually recommend me for AP Physics. ;D

When I was young, a billion was a million million, a trillion was a million million million, and so on; and some people still cling nostalgically to that definition.  In that regime, a milliard (which tends to mean "a lot") was reserved for a thousand million.

Oh, and "a pint of water weighs a pound and a quarter", "a gallon of water weighs ten pounds" - there'll be none of your penny-pinching US pints and gallons for me, thanks.
Title: Re: Holy crap, a new topic. By Blue.
Post by: cesium133 on 18 Feb 2013, 06:35
On the subject of English-vs-Metric units, I find it interesting that the U.S. has indirectly been using metric units since 1896, when all the U.S./English units were redefined in terms of metric units: for example, 1 inch = exactly 25.4 mm.

And as for the gallon, I think the U.S. gets to dictate what that is now, since the British have switched to using the metric system. Plus, in the words of Alton Brown, "a pint is a pound the world around." If we can't believe Alton Brown, who can we believe?  :psyduck: (for people from outside the U.S. who might not know who he is, Alton Brown is a TV cooking-show host)

A UK pint is still the standard measure of beer and such in a pub.  Actually, both gallons originated in the UK, as was mentioned in a similar discussion in this thread (http://forums.questionablecontent.net/index.php/topic,24757.msg967669.html#msg967669).

The imperial measures of volume (in the US form) follow a long trail of binary relationships, as listed later (http://forums.questionablecontent.net/index.php/topic,24757.msg968485.html#msg968485) in that same thread.

It is, of course, a billion, but is it 10 to 9 or 10 to 12? The former is milliard here (I think we have been following German practice there for quite some time).

1 pint = 1 pound (assuming volume density 1:1 relative to water, same as 1mL = 1cm3.
1 gallon = 231 in3 (exactly 231...no rounding or whatever)

US liquid pint  is 473 milliliters, but a pound is 454 grams, so a US liquid pint of water weighs 473 grams. Much like a fluid ounce of water weighs more than an ounce. Avoiding conversion factors like 231 cubic inches to a gallon is the essence of the metric system. Of course the basic units don't need to match with models in Paris for it work well in physics classes - they could be something else.

Having said that I do like beer in UK pints (568 milliliters).

More about comma vs point. We use point here to indicate ordinals, so "1." is "the first" and so on. This is used e.g. in dates, so "18.02." is "February 18th". Programs like MSExcel tries to cope (the different kind of separators and such are regionally configurable in Excel), so when I copy numerical tables produced in the US to a Finnish edition of Excel, it interprets figures containing a decimal point as dates, and performs an irreversible conversion (at least I haven't figured out how to revert it). Arrggh.

It depends on the language. In Scandinavian/German 1 000 000 000 is a Milliard (Miljard) and your "Billion" we use for Trillion (Biljon).

That's not real tea...that's an American bullshit excuse for a cold drink. Long Island is the only place that does American tea correctly around here.

My genuine tea comes in two varieties: English High, and Matcha.

Okay, three varieties. Because no one can take my Yerba Mate away from me.

Long Island Iced tea (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Long_Island_Iced_Tea) is my favorite!

But perhaps you were speaking of some beverage which has tea in it.

I really like Tazo Passion and Wild Sweet Orange tea. It is super sweet on its own and even better with a bit of sugar. I'm guessing basically everyone in the UK would scoff at me for it.

Tazo passion tea is awesome. And just keeps coming up in conversations here for me lately. I neeeeeeed some nowwwww.

oh god their passion tea is awful. I can't stand it.

their wild orange tea makes excellent iced tea, though - kind of like a citrus kool-aid, just without the fake stuff.

Here is a photo of one my oldest friends drinking green tea, which looks quite a lot like piss:

By the way she is absolutely beautiful and my god if photos could do her justice you'd probably all just cry like tiny little girls right now.

Brothers and sisters, I've been crushing on this girl since 2002.

My oldest friend is probably Redball, if you mean people I'm actually friend friends with, and his friend whose name has temporarily slid out of my brain if you mean people I have socialised with (who is in his nineties, is that correct?). But I don't think that's quite what you meant, is it Gareth?

I know. I was playing dumb for the first post, and for the second there didn't really seem to be any recourse except for giving a straight answer. I'd have made the exact same joke and there wasn't really anywhere I could go with it.

BUT SERIOUSLY GUYS HOW GODDAMN PRETTY IS SHE

Now that I think of it, I suppose you're one of my youngest friends, and a pleasure to have a friend that bridges a couple of generations. You're thinking of Dean Wilson, about 92, beginning to fade, but said something a few weeks ago about accompanying him to South America. He has a friend down there, a former secretary, he thinks I should meet.

Am I a worthless hipster shitcock for liking Teavana? I don't drink it to brag that I can brew loose-leaf tea, I drink it because it tastes good...

BUT SERIOUSLY GUYS HOW GODDAMN PRETTY IS SHE

IF YOU LIKE HER SO MUCH WHY DON'T YOU MARRY HER? :emotrex:

Seriously, ask her out! ;D

Not so. (http://chineseteas101.com/) There are many different teas, and you should match your brewing method to the tea. For example, you will ruin green teas if you brew them at the high temperature needed to extract the flavour from Oolong. More elaborate methods are also appropriate when you make tea for guests, simpler when you just want a nice cup for yourself.

Am I a worthless hipster shitcock for liking Teavana?
I would be the last person to criticise you (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chinese_tea_culture). If you think you take tea seriously watch this guy's videos (I couldn't find better English-language ones):

Well yeah, because I have stuff from teavana, I know the brewing requirements for white, green, oolong and black, as well as rooibos and yerba mate...I was implying that "high tea" was an almost identical practice anywhere in the British Commonwealth, be it England or New Zealand. ^^;;

I like my tea heater. It dispenses hot water at 175, 195 or 208 Fahrenheit, depending on what tea I'm brewing. It also has a de-ionizer. Now if I could only find the power cord...

Hardware store? homedepotlowesmenards? They're not usually hard to find unless it's a real odd one.

It's proprietary...I'll probably have to contact Zojirushi for another one.  :'(

You're right about proprietary, if this Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/Original-Detachable-8-CDP-P300-Zojirushi-Dispensing/dp/B0015QUR9W) listing is an indication. Not nice of them! I'm a little compulsive about replacing a missing power cord, even if I haven't used the appliance for years. Dumb.

One of my favorite flavors. And, acting on my compulsion, it took about five minutes, though with no certainty it would fit your particular model.
But in the U.S., there aren't that many power cords in use, and most are available in hardware/Radio Shack stores.
If that Japanese company uses its own style, it may have standardized the cord across its entire line of appliances.

The Tea Drawer in the kitchen...

the tins on the left and at the back are loose tea, as is the YokoTea on the right.  Not pictured is the go-to Lipton on the counter.

All the way in the back in the center is a tin of Russian tea my father brought back from Kiev in 1977.  The pricetag is still on it (.76 rubles), and I've never opened the foil packest inside the elaborate tin.  Everything else gets drunk (drank?).

I like tea.  I can't drink coffee, which makes me sad.  So I compensate...
