Title: Age Roll Call
Post by: jwhouk on 12 Mar 2013, 19:05
A spinoff from the WCDT; figured it would be best posted here in the "newcomers" thread. Mods, if it's more appropriate somewhere else, feel free to move it.

Oh, and we mean "as of your most recent birthday, as you vote in this poll" :P

As mentioned previously, September, 1940.

I feel bound to mention that in the UK retirement age is no longer 65 (and is different for men and women anyway); and also that although I "should" have retired, I have not.

January 1966 here. As I said in the other thread, neither old nor young.

Startin' to build up a nice little bar graph, there.  Probably gonna be bimodal...

What inspired the three year increments?  And why stop at 65+?

I think that all of us "elder statesmen" (Paul Hodges, Redball, and myself) look pretty good.

The father of a friend of mine attributed his looking good at 70 to "good clean living, and Mogen David wine".

Somebody has to be youngest. It might as well be you. But don't take it any more personally than I as the oldest. Maybe I should grow some facial hair.

Three year increments made it for an easier poll.

And I stopped at 65 because it gets harder for people to read small type after a certain age... :D

All those absent people in their 30s and 40s must be thinking life is srs bsns and family responsibilities, while the 50s and over are relaxing into their second childhoods and allowing themselves to have fun again.

Jet engines, helicopters, rifles, one grenade and other mixed pyrotechnics and way too many loud rock concerts and I know I'm done for hearing wise. Enrages any member of the female species I'm with XD

My father was a marine stationed on a gunboat during Korea.  If you were on deck when the 9" guns were fired, they gave you one cotton ball.  You pulled it in half, and put that bit in each ear.

The VA's been very generous with his hearing aids.

From the sublime to the scatological: The appearance of stinginess reminds me of Army basic at Ft. Dix, where we were told we'd get one square of TP. We were to fold it in half and half again, tear off a piece at the center ... and honestly, I'm not quite sure what came next, except that it probably belongs in TMI.

It does that to you. When the withdrawal starts to kick in, read it again. (I think my archive-binge record is a day and a half, though I had just finished all my exams and was taking a few days to just chill).

I oddly have never reread the archive. I'll hit random once in a while and just read the next 50 or so comics starting there, but the whole thing? No desire.
Title: Re: Age Roll Call
Post by: Asterus on 20 Mar 2013, 20:24
I've often done it for several comics, usually because I'm trying to find a oneshot joke or I have the retarded thought of "How different does the art look between now and when this character first showed up". When Faye cut her hair that one day she also baked a pie, I went back to look at Faye's first appearance to compare. 2 hours later, I've realized I'm a maniac for sitting around in complete silence, changing the page every 10 seconds. I could have completed a karaoke video or finished a typical assignment in that time!
It still happens about once every few months though. That and getting lost on TVTrope chains.

A karaoke video?
Usually just a single image video with off-vocal audio and scrolling subtitles, so people could sing along. The most tedious part is syncing the lyrics to where the vocals are supposed to be. Since I write english adaptation lyrics for non-english songs for fun, but I can't sing, I end up making these rather frequently.

Title: Re: Age Roll Call
Post by: pwhodges on 22 Mar 2013, 01:13
As it stands this forum has no age checks or limits; this is how Jeph set it up.  While we accept a certain degree of adult behaviour and discussion, in line with the comic itself, this is one reason for the absolute rule against porn, for instance, and for maintaining a semblance of decorum.
Title: Re: Age Roll Call

Heaven forbid we need real, down-to-the-core decorum.

I think there are one or two here who would struggle to maintain what I'd call real decorum - but their hearts are in the right place, so we're cool.  There are those who would say that in real life I am not a model of decorum in any case.

Hey! Who you calling a semblance of decorum!?

Also hasn't rule 34 established that all things are, in the end, porn to someone? Someone finds the font this very message is in arousing. That person is out there. Right now. Watching. Reading.

Quote
Reptiles also have penises, and most have two. They are called hemipenes, are housed internally in males just at the base of the tail, and are everted when needed. But they only use one penis at a time, usually the on the side next to the female, although some individuals seem to have a preference, kinda like being left- or right-handed.

There's an option for "allow users to change vote" that is currently unchecked. I'm pretty sure Jwhouk could edit the poll only to check that box in if he wanted.

And now for a ridiculous overanalysis...

The mean age of members here is 30.8, with a standard deviation of 13.4. I had to make some assumptions to get this result: I used the approximation that all people who responded to a certain category were in the center of the category (e.g. all who responded 28-30 were 29). Also, I don't know the ages of the people over 65, so I assumed they were all 65, which will lead to an underestimation of the actual average age.

This is a poor estimation, though, because the distribution is clearly bimodal, with one peak in the 20s and another in the 50s. If I treat this as two separate distributions, I get one with an age of 23.6±4.2, and another with an age of 51.4±7.8. Again, the older distribution is an underestimate, though, because I don't know the ages of the 65+ group.

How many poll options are allowed, if I may ask? I could do one that has two options each, but it'd probably mean I'd have to have 35 options.

EDIT: Oooooh. I can do 36 options.

Okay, let's try this one again, people. Poll is of the age you are NOW, not the age you WILL BE at the end of the year.
Title: Re: Age Roll Call
Post by: pwhodges on 06 Apr 2013, 15:54
I don't know if there's limit; but I really wouldn't bother to redo this poll.  It's interesting, but no more accurate than any self-selecting sample might be.  For instance, there are many more people visiting this forum than have voted, but I'm pretty sure all the over-65s are included (I know of one other who came, but he didn't stay).

(edit) There may be many people who don't revisit this thread, and so don't get the hint to vote again.

Hunh! I'll turn 76 in June.
The last time my age was overstated was at my 49th birthday. My wife invited people to a birthday party and advertised it as my 50th. I wasn't actually all that bothered by that, but then on my 50th, she and our daughter went down to visit my in-laws in Tennessee. That hurt! And my daughter told me recently my wife went out of town deliberately.

A double surprise! Does...does she hate surprises or something? I don't see how that could make someone mad, much less "so pissed she couldn't talk for 20 minutes" and holding a grudge about it decades later.
Title: Re: Age Roll Call
Post by: Redball on 06 Apr 2013, 22:21
I truly set her up to believe an ordinary party at home was ahead. No one showed. They were all elsewhere. She had a hard time dealing with it, and over the years, I simply accepted that.
Getback was celebrating 50th on my 49th, which was sort of a fail for her, so the next year was her next best thing.
We had a good 40-plus years, and that just added some texture to a good marriage, better than I ever expected given my parents' marriage and my first one. I'm a widower. I'd like to try it again, but I guess I'd skip the surprises.
Title: Re: Age Roll Call
Post by: Method of Madness on 06 Apr 2013, 22:23
Oh! I thought them all being at the pizza place was stage 2 of the surprise party! That is, she expected a surprise party, so you took her to a mostly empty house to get her guard down, then bring her to everywhere else, I didn't realize they just didn't show up. That's kind of shitty of them.
Title: Re: Age Roll Call
Post by: Redball on 06 Apr 2013, 22:28
Naw, I wasn't clear. You got the right idea. Just two couples showed up at the house, the place she expected, so she was led to believe the party was a flop. The pizza place indeed was stage 2.

To be honest, I would be pissed too if I was her; but I hate surprise parties and April Fool's when they hurt people in the process (which they mostly do). But I wouldn't be butthurt about it decades later.

I am, however, still butthurt about that one time when my mother went out to party with her boyfriend of the month on Christmas of ... woha, 2008, telling me in advance that she might call me to come to the party later. She never called; what's worse, my PC was broken at that time, and I wasn't invited anywhere else. I ended up walking for half an hour through the streets, meeting a generous estimate of five people in the process, going into an Internet cafe to chat and giving out my phone number to the girl that would become my first girlfriend and my later ex.

Looking back on that small wall of text, saying that I am "butthurt" doesn't quite cover it.

Thanks for your kind words, but:

a) I had known her for quite a long at that point; we might have ended up together anyway, just not "starting" on that same day.
b) I feel I could have been happier without that relationship in the first place.
Title: Re: Age Roll Call
Post by: Method of Madness on 07 Apr 2013, 09:39
a. Oh. I guess I misunderstood your story, it made it sound like you met five people (as in, met for the first time) and one of those was the girl who became your first girlfriend.
b. My first girlfriend was with me for only a couple weeks and it was a disaster, but I'm glad it happened, because it taught me a lot about what I didn't want in a relationship. Not saying that's necessarily true in your case, just a thought.

Oh, no, sorry. I meant that the streets were empty, because everyone was somewhere celebrating, so I ran into a ridiculously low number of people at all. I then went to chat with my long-time friends; one of them had expressed interest in me the days before/on that day, so I ended up giving out my phone number to her, which I normally don't do to "Internet people".

That suddenly I'm not. Just because I don't live in Erlangen (that really feels like it came out of the blue) doesn't mean I'm not German.

Ich kann auch gerne mit euch Deutsch sprechen Loki und mtmerrick, aber ich fürchte dass es Kommunikationsschwierigkeiten geben wird.

Primo, to clear up this misunderstanding: I live in Beer City Munich. That picture was taken when I was visiting the Welshman in Swansea, Wales. We (that includes Daf, the other guy in the picture and Ann, who took the picture) met online and decided to meet up. I had forgotten this picture even existed because I hid them after a falling out with both Daf and Ann. But that story is too long to share it here, maybe some other time in the relationship advice thread.

The current poll is skewing younger than the original poll; the current mean is 27.4 ± 12.7. The median age is 23.5. The bimodality of the distribution is less noticeable this time, though there does appear to be a secondary peak in the 40s. If I split the distribution the same way as before, I get two modes, one with a mean at 22.2 ± 4, and another with its mean at 50.7 ± 11.9.

And that's your overanalysis for today.

I cannot be 42 in any base :(

Thinking about it a bit more, you can only be 42 every four years (the first time being at 22, because you need at least base 5 in order to even have a 4). Unless you allow for non-natural bases, but that'd be weird.
Title: Re: Age Roll Call
Post by: Method of Madness on 08 Mar 2014, 01:10
Yep! I noticed that before when I realized that I was 42 in base-6, but didn't feel like typing out that explanation on my phone

There is no maximum age to be 42 though.

I guess I just didn't expect that. I'm one of the youngest there having just turned 23 while our founder is in his 40's and we have about 10 members over 60 (also, someone who's like 81, nicest guy).

I think I'm going to do another "grouping" of the poll, due to the influx of newcomers.

I'll wait to vote, as I'm under 2.5 months from changing groups.

Turn 58 later this month. Which means, if time moved at the same rate in QC as it does in RL, I would be the same age as Victoria Reed and John Ellicott-Chatham

Is there a reason it's under 16 and not under 18? Also...this poll doesn't account for 16 year olds. I'll fix that to "16 and under".

Just poor wording on my part.

Went through this thread just to find this post:

*headscratch* why not just poll the birthyears instead of age? Age changes, years of birth remain forever.
------------
On an unrelated note:
I cannot be 42 in any base :(

Thinking about it a bit more, you can only be 42 every four years (the first time being at 22, because you need at least base 5 in order to even have a 4). Unless you allow for non-natural bases, but that'd be weird.
Dear past me, please include proofs in your posts. Thank you.

(It's really simple actually. To be 42 in base k, it would mean your age is x=4*k+2 <=> x-2 = 4k. So x-2 must be divisible by 4. That occurs only once in 4 years, obviously.)

Good idea. Let's try this again. Simple - year of birth.

So go back to the earlier poll and update your age there!

Cool, there are at least four of us here in the '59-'63 range.  8-)

There will be retirement homes filled with tribal tramp stamps.

These days, it's almost more non-conformist having neither tats nor piercings (not counting pierced ears).

You've got roughly a triple V headstart on me, and still tattoos kind of had a bad rep when I was young.

I'm so inactive as to be invisible. But I wonder if I'm the oldest member: 83? When I was active for 2-3 years through 2014, I was followed by celticgeek and pwhodges. From the age categories, it appears that's still the case. And I've had very pleasant meetings with both!

I tripped over 46, two weeks ago & had a follow up appointment with my MD.

Doc says my Troponin levels were 0.11 ng/ml, down from a high of 0.23 ng/ml.

I've got another follow up scheduled for the 31st; fingers crossed that the Troponin keeps going down.
