Title: Help me gig with Cradle of Filth
Post by: Jimmy the Squid on 29 Mar 2013, 05:06
Hi everyone! Some of you may know me, most of you probably don't. I used to post here quite a lot a few months ago but I've been more of a lurker the last year or so. Anyway I'll cut to the chase. I'm in a black metal band called Isgahaatt (http://www.facebook.com/isgahaatt). If you wanted to listen to some of our stuff you could find it right here (when did we get soundcloud tags? Go Paul.)

In May, massive British "black metal" band Cradle of Filth are touring Australia and we entered one of those Facebook competitions to get the opening support for Sydney. So what I'm getting at is I would like you to have a listen to our stuff and if you like it (and frankly, even if you don't) to hit the voting page (http://bit.ly/cradle_of_filth_voting) and click on Sydney then vote for Isgahaatt. Cradle of Filth have been my favourite band since I was 11 and if we got to play with them that would be the fucking coolest thing ever. So if you're ok with it, help out a fellow QC fan and struggling musician to get a real awesome gig.

It would also be cool to talk about how these kinds of competitions are sort of making the music scene (in this case the Australian metal scene, which is already extremely embattled by lack of venues and an apathetic public) less of a community where people support each other and more of a competition in general where someone always has to lose out. Or maybe you think they're a way of getting up and coming bands that maybe aren't as established as other, bigger bands an in to the scene and an opportunity to get gigs they never would have been able to get in the past.

Boo I can't vote because like almost everything else in the entire world it requires a facebook account. Can we talk about how appalling it is that everything has bought into the facebook thing? It's ridiculous!

Anyway, goooooood luck Jimmy, that sounds like it would be amazing!

We totally can! Yeah social media has definitely become a Thing. Much like you are now almost required to have a mobile phone to be able to socialise effectively, the same goes for some sort of social media. I mean, it's kind of ridiculous but I have a FB account, a twitter, a G+, a tumblr, I'm on Snapchat and there's some others that I'm not remembering. I feel like I want to get rid of some of those, FB primarily among them but the fact is that if I do get rid of them, I am effectively cutting ties with a number of people I can't conveniently contact by other means (I love my twitter account though, I will never get rid of that).

It also forces musicians to use something which, in my opinion, cheapens your image or "brand" or whatever. I don't really want people to "like" my page or photos or whatever but I really can't deny that it's an incredibly useful networking (though I prefer the term "schmoozing") tool. Most of the recent gigs we've been offered have been done through FB. If we weren't on there we would still be twiddling our thumbs.

I have a FaceBook account to see what my children are doing; but in spite of having every privacy thing I can find checked, I still get emails every few days saying "you might know..." and suggesting I want to communicate with my ex-wife or someone like that.  It's very irritating, because I simply don't wish to receive these emails ever.

I have yet to see anything that makes me think that ANY social media website or ANY search engine has ANY respect for your privacy, despite what you tell them about wanting privacy or wanting them not to track you, they just do it anyway.

For example, I went looking for Ibanyez eight string guitars, found one on zZounds.com, and immediately, when I went back to the comic to compare pictures, there were advertisements for zZounds.com on the comic's page.

IIRC there is an opt-out setting for Google's ads, though you may have to have some Google account or other.

Basically just posting again in the hopes that someone might see this and give our stuff a listen. We're something like 20 votes out of where we need to be and there's only two weeks left. I'm hoping some of you dig BM enough to help us get a shot at this gig.

OK. I don't know how much it's going to help but this is the last time I'm going to post about this. The competition ends this coming Sunday and we're down about 20 votes. I think we'd need 20 to 30 to actually make it through to the final round.

If there's anyone who would like to help me out with this then just click here (http://bit.ly/cradle_of_filth_voting) and vote for Isgahaatt under the Sydney tab. You can unlike the page and delete the app and your vote will still count. I'd take it as a massive personal favour to anyone who does but obviously you don't have to do anything.

I'm cross posting this to the blog thread down in CHATTER but otherwise I'm going to shut up about this now. Thanks to everyone who voted. It was extremely appreciated.
