Hello all and welcome back to another Black Sword Mafia game!
As we all recall, Mafia 3 was a catastrophe for the village, but damned if the fight scenes I got to write weren't fun! So, now that we have nigh on two dozen experienced victims veterans, let's see how we all do when trying to outwit each other, shall we?
Obviously, I'd like to use the Mafia 3 rules, but if we don't have enough players, I'll use my back up from back then. I'm shooting for a minimum of 14 for the alternate game and a minimum of 17 for the rematch between villagers, vampires, and mages.
Chatter, let's play a game.
01. Masterpiece
02. ChaoSera
03. cesium133
04. henri bemis
05. de_la_Nae
06. J
07. mtmerrick
08. Loki
09. Linds
10. Unicorn
11. Method of Madness
12. Gareth
13. TheEvilDog
-
Sign me up! I want to try my hand in this.
-
I'm in!
-
I'm in.
-
I'll play.
-
Hey BSword, glad to see you back, and hope you're feeling at least a little better. Being sick for a few suuuucks. :(
I'm down.
-
sign me up boss man.
-
I think I'm going to take a break from this one. But have fun getting slaughtered, kids!
-
I'm in. Hopefully I don't get killed early on again...
-
Lynch Primo!
Err. I mean, I am in.
-
*drags TheEvilDog into this game kicking and screaming*
Ultimate grudge match time, TED!
Also, nice to see you all again. :)
-
No, seriously, I'm not going to be able to take part in this game, I have way too much going on over the next month. But I do appreciate the effort :-D
-
I think I'm burned out on these so I'm sitting out this one.
-
No, seriously, I'm not going to be able to take part in this game, I have way too much going on over the next month. But I do appreciate the effort :-D
awww... but then who will i subject to unfair username based persecution?

Try the person who has the word "Chaos" in their name. :-P
-
Or Loki.
He's a trickster, you know.
-
I'm in this time!

Dunno whatya talkin about... :psyduck:
-
eh, i was considering sitting out
but i'm in.
-
Ah, excellent! Just 4 to 7 more to go. Come one, come all, to the greatest show on earth!
-
I'm in! But I didn't play 3 so please still list the details in the opening post.
-
I would also like to get in line for GMing one of the next games, because I'm currently brooding on a Stargate version of this and I'd like to try it out.
-
you're behind me then. and i already said i'm doing a sci-fi mafia-in-space :P though its my own storyline, so i guess a Kyocera'd Stargate one wouldn't seem that copycatish :P
-
I was thinking of trying a QC-themed game at some point. I suppose I could get in line...
-
I honestly have no idea what my theme is going to be. But I think I have a while.
-
I should actually get my story started now, if I want it ready by a couple games from now :P
-
Yeah, I'm not sure where I am in line, but I've been working on a Transmetropolitan game.
But, of course, there can never be too many space shenanigans!
-
a Transmetropolitan game.
IN.
IN.
I AM SO IN.
-
as am i.
intensely.
-
I think we're derailing the thread a little bit. Can't we open a new thread so everyone knows whose turn it will be?
-
I don't think you can derail a sign-up thread.
-
At the moment the GM list is:
Myself
Method of Madness
Mtmerrick
Game and Watch Forever
J
And I will be running a game based on the Thing (the good one, with Kurt Russell).
-
Okay so I'll totally be back into that one.
-
Moment of Madness
Ha, were you the one who called me that before? How many times do I have to say this? MY MADNESS IS CONSTANT. (There's also the problem of using "myself" where you meant "me" but that's neither here nor there.)
-
I considered calling you the Mouth of Madness, but decided you probably weren't quite so Cthuhluian.
-
So... we're a couple
corpses bodies short. Volunteers, get volunteering!
-
Okay, since you're short, I'll be in. Don't want a game just dying on its ass.
-
i've never hosted a mafia before. i'm beginning to write up mine though, and i'm realizing it feels like a few characters short.
can someone PM me some example role lists?
-
Black Sword, fine, sign me up. I can take a break after I run my game.
-
One more and I'll start the smaller version. Volunteers?

Add a parenthesis. Or just click here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mafia_(party_game)).
-
Last call! game will begin tomorrow.
-
Since I can't post in the game thread, let me be the first to say that Loki's porridge-obituary is amazing.
-
Thanks. It's always sad when the good ones go first :(
-
Only the food die young?
-
You know what could be fun? Commentators.
"[...] and Loki carries on his streak of strange behaviour by pointing the finger at the stiff! An odd play indeed!"
"No, merrick certainly doesn't like it. He looks completely bemused and has accused Loki of tomfoolery! That's not going to go down well with Loki."
"Indeed it hasn't, Loki comes out all guns blazing and rounds on merrick, demanding that he back up his claims with a more convincing argument! How's he going to get out of this one?"
"Ooh, an appeal to the referee. This has definitely been a game for those, but I thought it would have calmed down by now. He has got a point though, Unicorn's been trying to get themself lynched for a few hours now. Oh, what's this? It looks like - it is! A fantastic display of insane troll logic from Loki there, merrick has backed right off! He doesn't look happy though..."
-
*High-fives Pilchard123*
Are there any rules for calling 'jinx' online?
-
Okay, I admit it. I knew the porridge was poisoned before eating it. I didn't poison it, though. As a matter of habit, I always test my food for poisons before eating it. But, seriously, why would I pass up free porridge just because it's poisoned?
-
Commentary would ROCK.
-
He's got me there. I was a little tempted even after I saw Cesium's corpse. Thankfully they destroyed it before I could give in and have some.
-
Rule clarification: if you win the lynching contest, you don't get to kill anyone to take them with you.
You guys seriously killed the cop on the first day. This is why you can't trust the players with something like killing anytime, they get too eager to murder and everything gets messed up for the villagers.
Well, at least I learned to put in a time delay function to any such rule in the future.
-
Rule clarification: if you win the lynching contest, you don't get to kill anyone to take them with you.
Aww.
Clarification to clarification: I assume this applies no matter whether you actually know if you will be lynched? For example, even if I message you with the first kill request of the day (edited to add: before anyone starts lynching), but then win the lynching contest, my target will not die even though I did not intend to simply "take someone with me"?
-
Oops! Well, welcome to the land of the dead, de_la_Nae and Method of Madness... want some porridge?
-
Actually, if you send me the first kill request, then it's decided right then and there. I'd probably allow the voting to go on for long enough for you to have a vote or two, but it'll be ended before it gets to "conclusive lynch."
-
I decided to be bold!
Being bold doesn't always work.
-
You broke my heart, DLN...or at least put a sizable hole there :P
-
I'm sure we have some duct tape around here somewhere.
-
Wait, what is happening? Is this in the rules and I missed it?
Edit: to answer my own question, yes, I totally missed something. HMM.
-
*face palms*
-
"LIIIIIIIISTEEEEEEEEN!"
Reminds me of a certain image with Link and his fairy, which I won't post here because of cartoon gore.
-
I remember seeing an episode of Powerpuff Girls in which the Mayor is playing Zelda, and he walks into a wall twice then kills Navi, thus living the dream of millions of teenagers.
-
So it's funny, I was reading on Tapatalk, which basically ignores spoiler tags, so I was like "wait, why did Black Sword show my PM?" Then I read the rest of the post and saw that I was dead. Fair enough.
-
I am the worst villager. :(
-
Especially since I rescued you from the closet! Or, you know, I would have, had I realized you were in there with me. (I'd misread where it said you were pushed inside as pushed aside so I thought you were just knocked out of the way so the door could be jammed).
-
I did want to say that I love all of you crazy, sorry-ass motherfuckers in that thread. Sorry I had to cock it up, but in my defense I thought there might be a method to Method's madness! (since there really wasn't much of any to mine)
-
Well I was just going to check a person every night until I got to the killer. And then, you know, do what you did to me to them.
-
Especially since I rescued you from the closet!
That was me. :-P
-
Yeah, but if I hadn't been banging on the door you wouldn't have known we were in there.
-
I think this game is going to set a speed record for Mafia. Definitely going to need to fine tune this.
-
It is a really neat idea to throw into the mix.
-
Well, y'all are fucked.
-
Uhm. Did I just died? (sic)
You know, it was really unclear.
-
It appears you did.
Looks like we got a quad-death this time, TheEvilDawg, Loki, ChaosEra, and Linds.
:psyduck:
1 4M 1NVOK1NG TH3 N4M3 OF YOUR 34RTH J3GUS TO 3XPR3SS FRUSTR4T1ON
-
Yeah, but if I hadn't been banging on the door you wouldn't have known we were in there.
I saw Unicorn shove her in there... I didn't hear you banging.
Sorry ChaoSera. Thought you were guilty. But I also kinda wanted to die because I am so freaking confused with this game right now. So hey! I'm a happy ghost. Uh, sorry if you aren't!
-
Seriously? I was making a LOT of noise.
-
I have this feeling the killing rule somehow throws this game a bit out of balance. Oh well, gonna haunt some people now that I'm dead, I guess.
-

I protected people, so I think that's going to haunt them a whole lot more than you.
-
My intent was to make the game more tense, a sort of Sword of Damocles hanging over everyone's head. That way, the Mafia would be forced to play their cards closer to their chest, to play more subtly, while everyone became even more suspicious of each other. Clearly, that didn't work, with de_la_Nae going off into psycho murder land and stabbing the goddamned cop in the back, followed by Linds going all murder-y too.
The only legit deaths so far have been cesium133, TheEvilDog, and Loki (battle death). :psyduck:
-
i'm really confused how de_la_nae got away with killing them if they were just a regular villager with no powers
-
She didn't, killing me caused her to die instantly.
-
okay well i mean
how did de_la_nae have the chance to kill someone if she was just a regular villager
-
...the GM is resisting the urge to strike Unicorn with a lightning bolt.
It's in the setting description and the rules. It was an experiment which resulted in the quickest Mafia game in memory.
-
Anyone can kill anyone, but if you're not a sorcerer and the person's not guilty, you die as well.
-
ugh i didn't read any of that
-
what's a diarmadh'im?
I cannot tell whether this was in-character. If not:
Though [the Star Scroll] has been hidden and general knowledge of it has been suppressed, something lurks the halls of Goddess Keep, eager to seize the Star Scroll and its secrets. These are the ancient enemies of the Sunrunners, the diarmadh'im.
-
ugh i didn't read any of that
Were you playing? Why would you play a game and not read the rules? :psyduck:
-
It adds to the surprise, duh! It also makes it even more awesome when you accidentally invoke one of the rules to your advantage.
Seriously, I'm going to have to actually read the game thread when I have the chance... it sounds like a beautiful clusterfuck.
-
because the rules have been 99% the same in every game
-
and also i didn't care about this game from the beginning
the only reason i keep playing is on the off-chance i get a special role, but that has literally never happened outside of the one time i was a killer. 8 games, and 7 of them i was bored. that's really not a good streak, so i'm honestly just opting out of these mafia games (or, well, not opting in, technically)
especially since people don't know how to play games and make it just excruciatingly boring (Loki, you're the number one exception that comes to mind)
-
How I read this and what I thought:
especially since people don't know how to play games and make it just excruciatingly boring (Loki,
"Hey! What's with me being excruciatingly boring?"
you're the number one exception that comes to mind)
"Oh. Err. Nevermind. Yeah. Thanks."
----
If you don't mind me asking, what constitutes a good game for you? (I assume I have a pretty good idea, actually, but I thought I'd ask.)
-
enough plot to care about what's going on
people who actually play characters and not just a game
-
Also, is boring because it's SO SLOW GOING.
Seriously black sword, pick up the pace >_<
-
I've got to apologize for not participating more in this game - I usually try to do more, but I've taken on a bunch of shit lately and haven't had as much time as I'd usually like to dedicate to it. I'll get on it promptly.
-
I second that, Primo. What's up Black Sword, invent a slow teleport?
-
I never really looked into the Mafia threads, but seeing this madness I'll definitely take part in one of the next rounds.
-
Black Sword said he was having to deal with some personal things not too long ago, and GMing is a lot more work than playing, so let's cut him some slack? I just don't think he'd bail on a game without good reason.
-
Ah, I didn't know that.
-
also just as an aside
if someone's commands aren't in and the night is over, they really should lose their chance to send in any commands that night, rather than push the game back because of them.
-
Agreed. Who's doing Mafia 10?
-
well, i've asked to do one. has anyone else prior to me?
-
I'll be running Mafia 10.
You're all going to suffer.
-
Cool. Should be fun.
-
someone had a list somewhere.
-
also just as an aside

I agree, but... it wasn't even night o.o
-
i'm literally not even paying attention to the game, i've just been a non-sequitur as much as possible instead
-

^ I thought this was the general modus operandi.
-
Neither am I, but I'm dead.
-
I demand a pony next game! It doesn't have to do a single thing, it just has to exist.
I suppose I could just write in a pony and that would solve my demand.
Though you know now that I consider it a magical pony of some sort...possibly with a sweet horn...hmm....
POSSIBILITIES
-
This... can be arranged.
-
What a train wreck game. Next time I'll fix it so no one can do vigilante kills like this without it being like day 3 or something.
Now that it's concluded, read the rules. GMing is a pain in the butt, and it's even more of one when people don't read the helpful materials included to set mood and pacing, and potentially even get into something new. I've based my custom games on interesting fandoms I like because: 1) I like them 2) I think others might like them 3) they make for fun scenarios. At least make the effort worthwhile.
-
I'll be putting up the sign up thread for 10 on Thursday, I want to get the roles and storyline sorted out.

I read the story and skimmed the rules. I didn't even see the part where a villager can kill anyone until it was pointed out.
GMing is a pain, but, really, it took two weeks to go through a day and a half of gameplay. That's just...tedious.
-
Seriously though, did I die?
-
Maybe, Gareth.
Also, WTF, where the hell did time go? I could have sworn we've only been at it for a week. Wow. Someone, just murder me where I stand. It'll be a mercy.
-
Gareth: as far as I can see, you did not, AND I still see at least three paths to a 1:1 stalemate, which I assume would be decided by whoever sends his kill request in first. This is assuming some very unfortunate circumstances for the killers, but it's still possible.
-
I'm taking this as a moral victory.
-
I'm just giving a heads up now; when I start the next game, I will be posting a rule that if people don't get their actions in before the deadline, their turn is wasted. I know people have lives to deal with, but in all fairness, 24 hours is plenty of time to take 2 minutes and send a message.
-
i'm sitting these games out from now but i would actually like to dm another one at some point in time
