Title: I need happier music.
Post by: Tulpa on 24 Apr 2013, 22:37
It's recently been bothering me that I pretty much completely lack happy music. Maybe because I've been happier lately.

The closest I have is The World/Inferno Friendship Society which is usually just an upbeat sad.

What I've been listening to lately mostly consists of Tiamat, World/Inferno, KMFDM and Flogging Molly. And sometimes Emilie Autumn.

Open to trying about anything. Let's see what you come up with. Maybe something with laser sounds. Pew pew.

Music that sounds like lasers? You must mean dubstep. :P

I don't listen to much that could be considered "happy music" - I find it depressing. Happy music for me is stuff like rise against and sum 41. (these are not happy bands)

But seriously try dubstep. No lyrics (at least,  in the good stuff) means nothing to define it as sad, just noise to enjoy.

Quick reply. I disagree, though. Noise can be rather emotional. Actually, it can sometimes be pure emotion. I like to listen to dark psytrance when writing papers. Things like Psykovsky. Dubstep hasn't been very interesting in my limited view of it. Post a youtube video of it and I'll give it a shot if you'd like, but I'm looking more for something that can be enjoyed without wearing good headphones. I like how World/Inferno tells a story and Tiamat paints pictures.

I can recommend Drum'n'Bass, if you have been thinking about Dubstep:

Maybe Dropkick Murphys as well, idk.

Cuban music is also great:

Edit: Dubstep can be very emotional. Something nice can be like this:

But it can also be rather negative:

Wasn't really thinking about dubstep, it was just suggested above. Though now that you mention it, I remember listening to some 15 minute track of drums, a bass guitar and a female singer. It was good, but I can't remember what the band was. Not exactly happy, but I'd like to listen to it again.

Music is best when it comes from somewhere that inspires passion. I find music inspired by happiness tends to be... well, hokey. That said, I spent one summer listening almost exclusively to: Nada Surf's The Weight Is A Gift, Maritime's We The Vehicles, and Harvey Danger's Where Have All The Merrymakers Gone, which aren't necessarily happy records as much as they are fun, poppy, and not miserable. Definitely recommended on all three.

Also, music that makes me happy isn't always music that IS happy. Listening to McLusky Do Dallas, or Death Grips' Exmilitary, or Trap Them's Darker Handcraft all make me feel like jumping and punching myself in the face, but, in a great way.

This song has had the ability in the past to make me incredibly happy, but the effects are having a diminishing return.

Happy, or Energetic? I've kinda split them into separate groups, based on their effect.
Happy = Reminds me of past Feels or Awesome or makes me smile like an idiot, like Shio (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Iu4H3JZxzn8), or anything by Bowling for Soup
Energetic = ... Makes me energetic. See Night of Nights (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vS_a8Edde8k) or U.N Owen was Her? (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8jJZA-O_B78) (Sorry, I've got Touhou on the brain)
Though I guess most of my suggestions aren't to taste for people that listen to actual bands
(Probably going to modify the hell out of this later and put in an actual list.)

Okay, so a quick list of songs that I can't whistle because they make me laugh:

KMFDM has some fun stuff. Strut comes to mind readily.

Sadly, since I'm on a bus and am unable to link to anything, I'll just post a list of my "feeling crazy and need happy music" playlist.

Inní mér syngur vitleysingur - Sigur Rós
River - Penny Whiskey
Embryonic Journey - Jefferson Airplane
Quietcat Bubblesoul Stampede - Lada Laika (done by a forumite that's moved on, but his music was pretty great)
Revival - The Allman Brothers
The W.A.N.D. (The Will Always Negates Defeat) - The Flaming Lips
Constellations - Lada Laika
Kommeniezuspadt - Tom Waits (seriously, try not to smile while listening to this beautiful nonsense)
Fade Together - Franz Ferdinand
When We Collide - k.d. lang
Come Away Come Go - Melanie
The Sun in the Stream - Enya
That Right Ain't Shit - The Books (my kind of definitive happy song here)
Tonight, Tonight - The Smashing Pumpkins
Please Read the Letter - Robert Plant & Alison Krauss
Effect  & Cause - The White Stripes
Hole in My Shoe - Traffic
Cry (If You Want To) - Holly Cole

Damn, that's what I get from trying to select music from my memory (I couldn't listen to it before posting). Here's a better Cuban one:

Disclaimer: I skipped about half of the OP and 90% of the replies. :)

Try out Foster the People and Real Estate for some basic happy music. Now, if you're looking for something more inspiring, something that will most likely kick your ass out of whatever doldrums or depression you're in, give a good listen to Macklemore's latest album, The Heist. Listen closely to the lyrics. Some songs are upbeat and some are not, but they will all uplift you if you pay attention.

Bellowhead (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vuh40vOxR-8)

Katzenjammer (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fKxfiQCfEVI)

Also, there's a lot of joyful classical music. If I'm ever down, the music of Handel never fails to cheer me up:

I've been using Lindsey Stirling, Sleigh Bells, and Angels & Airwaves for less sad/mad stuff.  Although earlier A&A can be sad if u get all the words

I agree here.

Also, you need Torche in your life.
To add some context here, here are some live shots of just how much goddamn FUN this band is:

These bros just legit love having fun and rocking the shit on out and you need to buy all their records because it's awesome.
The only band that can somehow mix Electric Wizard-level fuzzed out heaviness with some serious bubblegum happy-clappy poppiness and get away with it. It's just their thing, you know?!

Listen to this album:

Then listen to this one. It is also pretty short and sweet:

All in all good clean catchy fun!

Alcest can sometimes be very happy while still remaining beautiful and introspective, if you don't want extreme cheesy happiness:

But if you do want extreme cheesy happiness...

Ok. I'm gonna give you some power metal, but be careful with this stuff, it's extremely strong, contains dangerous amounts of cheese, and overdosing can have untold effects. Use with extreme caution. Ok. Here's Freedom Call. Don't say I didn't warn you.

Ozomatli, especially their self-titled first album and "Street Signs." And Joe Strummer's stuff with the Mescaleros, especially on "Global A Go-Go". I'll second kazuela's recommendation of Los Fabulosos Cadillacs (especially "Matador").

(mayy have skipped past most of the replies here, but anyway here's my suggestions) :
You should be listening to The Flaming Lips (that pretty much goes without saying). Super happy.
Also things like Panda Band, Cloud Control, Foster The People, Megan Washington, Owl Eyes, etc.
Macklemore is also pretty good for 'feel-good' music, if you listen to the lyrics.

I find anything with that kind of bouncy bassline works well for cheeriness (see also: "Love for Tender" by Elvis Costello and "You Can't Hurry Love" by Phil Collins).

I thought this was some band ripping off VNV Nation - Illusion. Since that's in the lyrics "The World is just an Illusion, trying to change you.."

It's not.. so that's good.. also, VNV Nation - Illusion is a great song.  I saw them live recently and it was *awesome*.. I really recommend going to see them whenever you get a chance.

I have a playlist on spotify that's filled with positive music. I don't feel comfortable posting the link since my profile is connected with my facebook but here's some honorable mentions:

Shiny Happy People - R.E.M.
A lot of stuff by Neon Trees..their music is generally pretty upbeat, even if the lyrics go some dark places at times.
Alright - Supergrass (Uses UK slang for cigs, if that word bothers you)
Don't Stop Me Now - Queen
Good Time - Carly Rae/Owl City
Owl City in general makes me feel happy - The Bird and the Worm, Rainbow Veins, Shooting Star and Dreams Don't Turn to Dust are some good ones
We Are Golden - MIKA

Hope that helps!

I find that as a general rule, a lot of Shoegaze/Dream-pop works for me when I want happy/perky music.

Lush: Sweetness and Light

Cocteau Twins: Iceblink Luck

Asobi Seksu: I'm Happy But You Don't Like Me

And for those who like a bit of Goth with their Shoegaze:
Curve: Coming up Roses

And for something totally unrelated but always makes me happy
Tonari No Totoro
