Title: Region Roll Call
Post by: CrazyWelshy on 02 May 2013, 12:09
Seeing as there is an Age Roll Call here, I got curious.  Where are you guys from?

This is the region map I used:

I'm from
Western Europe,
UK,
Wales,
Carmarthenshire.

If there is a topic like this already, may as well close this.

EDIT:  I'm hoping if there are enough West Europe members, we could get merchandise shipped/sourced over here too?  :-D  Shipping costs are barbaric...

Western Europe, (not quite so) United Kingdom, Somerset.

On a related note, why are postal addresses always given from the most specific part to the least specific part?
Title: Re: Region Roll Call
Post by: Loki on 02 May 2013, 13:41
Not always. Germany has

Firstname Lastname
Streetname Housenumber
ZIPcode CityName

Sometimes D, A or CH (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_international_vehicle_registration_codes) goes in front of the ZIP, but I am not sure when it's required or if it's an old people thing.

That's more sensible than a UK address, though you still run into the issue of not knowing which city the street is in until you read the rest of the address.

Is that specific enough?

The railroad, real and Monopoly, and the cities in Pennsylvania and the UK, other places too, are pronounced RED-ing.
My yard has a bunch of direction signs on a 4x4. The original three are Reading PA, 479 miles; Redding CA 1,800, Reading MI, 3.5. My mom gave us part of the cost of the original A-frame cottage in 1987, at a time when she lived near Redding. The sign started out as a reading joke.

I recall reading about the Schleswig-Holstein Question in a history course. I've never looked into it, but I think it's connected with the reason my great-great-grandfather deserted from the Danish army in the early 1860s, eventually to become a tower clock builder in Manistee Michigan. And it's behind the second of the very funny Flashman historical novels, Royal Flash.
Title: Re: Region Roll Call
Post by: ankhtahr on 09 May 2013, 20:28
Schleswig-Holstein and the Danish still have some kind of a special relationship. In the Schleswig-Holstein state parliament (Landtag) the party of the Danish minority is still unaffected by the usual 5 percent rule. Usually parties can only become members of the parliament, if they can gather over 5 percent of all votes. The SSW (Südschleswigs Wählerverband/Sydslesvigsk Vælgerforening) is not affected by this.

There's still the myth of when the referendum about which parts of Schleswig-Holstein to become Danish was held, the majority for become German was only by one vote.

Come to think of it, why do English speakers use "from" in reference to someone's home? Logically "from" should mean your next-to-last location.

I beg to disagree. You can define the relation "X is from Y" as equivalent to "Y is the initial location of X".

By the way, not only English speakers do that, German does this too.

Come to think of it, why do English speakers use "from" in reference to someone's home? Logically "from" should mean your next-to-last location.

From suggests a spacial relationship, but has no implication of time - that is added by other words.  Thus:

Where have you come from? [just now]
Where did you come from? [also just now]
Where do you come from? [originally]
Where are you from? [also originally]

The key thing seems to be the tense of the verb; using the present talks about a continuing property that you have - your origin - whereas using the past indicates somewhere you have been but are no longer are - where you last were.

That is where I'm from, too! I moved south to go to university, but I love coming home again during the summer. I mean, most people (in Germany - possibly different in places like Australia) cannot go to the beach whenever they want, but when you live in Schleswig-Holstein, you can even get to two different seas with a two-hour drive at most. From my home, the nearest beach is half an hour away and my best friend lives practically on the beach. I love that.

I saw "South Asia" and "Southeast Asia" and never realized that "Southwest Asia" wasn't there. "Middle East" is a weird term, just because it changes a little bit depending on who uses it, I've come to understand it as southwest Asia, but some people include bits of Africa in the region.

I'm referring to the region as it shows in the map included in the opening post...
and specifically the point I'm reading QC from - Israel (smack-dab on the junction of Europe-Asia-Africa continent-wise).
...and indeed considered at times a part of any of the 3, depending on different criteria...

Every fucking school uses that song. In marching band in high school had that except we use "Mountie" instead of "Tarheel/Sooner" and I instead of Ah because it's not the south I guess? Also I refused to sing that because it's creepy as hell. (Although sometimes I did anyway because we sang it after we scored a touchdown and it was exciting)

The name of the school I went to was "Beall" (rhymes with "Hell"), so naturally we'd do a chant at football games that ended with "Give 'em hell, Beall". Never got any complaints from the other team, but the principal of the school hated it.

edit -- as for knowing nearby county names, I was a geography nerd in high school, so I memorized all the counties in Maryland (there aren't that many of them), but around here I only know the ones I need to know to understand tornado warnings. If the tornado is in Pottawatomie County, it's headed away from here. If it's in Cleveland County, it's here. If it's in McClain or Grady County, it's not here yet but moving in this direction.

Really? I've seen it now and then on the Web. But I just looked it up and apparently it should only be properly used as a collective for all French people, with no singular, so, yeah, I should have said "as a Frenchman", I guess. Or "a Frenchperson" if I bothered to be gender-unspecific.

Western Canada (deep in Hippie Country). My town's so isolated you need to take a 40 minute boat ride and then drive for an hour to get there. And it's on the mainland. The mall has an astounding 10 shops, 3 of which are old rich ladies clothes.

I'll guess northern BC then.

I lived for 3 years when I was young in one of the most northerly towns in Ontario.  Probably only one city over 10,000 within 3 hours drive.  Of course, it was on the trans Canada, so it was still accessible.

I grew up, though, at the intersection of the two trans Canadas in Ontario. Well, one of the intersections.

I now live in one of Canada's 5 largest cities.

Why should you be ashamed? I find it natural that anyone would be most knowledgeable in the geography of their own area of residence simply because most of your travels will be more or less local. It's easy to drive to the next town to go shopping over the day, it may take some planning to go to a larger city because it's too far away to just drive there and back over a day, and to reach a place further away you might need to fly or spend a long time traveling. Personally, I like to travel but I have barely made it outside of Europe (Asian part of Turkey), though I did pass through Eckernförde on two different occasions...

Yeah I spent a week there ten years ago. I saw Schleswig-Holstein mentionned, so I couldn't resist to add one of the two cities I visited there (well, visiting is a big word, I discovered there gebührplichtige Strand [not sur how to translate it, beach with staying fee?], the other one being Glücksburg). I know quite well Hamburg, been in Ruhrgebiet more than a couple of times, been in Genève, Lausanne, Le Locle - in fact I have been in many cities in western Europe, but I can't tell I know these cities, beacause I haven't seen much of them... that's what touring with bands brings you: geographical knowledge, touristic oblivion, and backache caused by sleeping on the floor of the gigs organizers.

Another from South Florida (Ft. Lauderdale), USA here.

Bleh.  I used to live in Florida.  100% humidity and 95 degrees all day every day gets old really quick.  Especially when it rains and stays 95 degrees.

Now, now. I wouldn't say 100% humidity ALL day - the tourist pleasing weather people say it's 84 degrees and 58% humidity out right now. But my car thermometer parked in the shade says 98... go figure.

I have some friends from my WoW days that live in the South and every time they complain about the 'cold' being 50 degrees, I just cannot help but laugh.  I know the differences in climates and tolerances and what you're used to define what you would find 'cold' but it's still one of those things, you know?

Heh. We keep the AC set at 72 degrees and people complain that its cold. I do enjoy 'cool' weather every once in a while, but I do have to agree that for a Floridian 50 degrees IS COLD! Heck, I was in Philly and needed a jacket in the evening a few weeks ago.

Even I have heard of Eckernförde (provided it means that place adjacent to Kiel). My housemate from grad school era (a Slovenian dude) had visited an art exhibition in Eckernförde. I am from the UK and an honorary mmmmmmmmmMidlander!

I'm in Birmingham, the land of the oft-misunderstood comedy accent here in the UK.  (The comedy accent in question is actually from the rural Black Country area.)

I'm originally though from near Chester/Manchester, just didn't fancy returning to my teeny tiny village when I graduated from Uni  :-D

Hmm, apparently I've voted in the poll but never posted in this thread. I've spent most of my life in Northern California, and most of that in San Francisco, so I was reading the comments above about climates and temperatures with amusement. For San Franciscans, anything over 80 F is a heat wave, and anything under 60 F is a cold snap.

My wife and I moved to Southern California last August -- a fair bit inland, near the desert. So the local temperatures have been... quite an adjustment. The first week we were here, temps were in the 90s. The second week we were here, it was in the 100s. Within the last month, my car windows have frosted over twice. I had to ask my wife (who's from Milwaukee) whether "ice" or "frost" was the proper term.

I miss my old weather...

Where do you draw the line between western and Eastern Europe? Usually I'd say central Europe, but that doesn't exist here.

I think usually the line was drawn by the iron curtain, but that doesn't exist anymore.

Anyways, I'm from Terminator country.

Good point - historically and culturally, Eastern Europe would be Ukraine, Belarus and Russia, and Western Europe roughly "everything west of the respective German & Austrian Borders"

Dividing Europe into East and West is a Cold War relic that would draw the line straight through Germany and completely ignores Southern-, and Northern Europe as distinct cultural entities.

I chose "Western Europe" mostly because as someone born & raised in Cold-Wat Western Germany, it still feels natural to me to identify with "the West" - but that's more of a politcal/economical/philosophical category than a cultural one. In cultural terms, I'm clearly a Central European... well, a Central European with strong affinity to  the Netherlands & Belgium...

Otoh, Many Eastern Germans would insist they are Central-, and not Western Europeans, despite living in a country that largely has the same alliances and political system as the former Western Germany. So CE is the only regional category that makes sense for us.

Methinks it would be better to offer Western-/Eastern-/Northern-/Southern-/Southeastern-/Central Europe as categories, or just "Europe" for the lot of us.

To quote the Wikipedia entry about how to classifiy Central Europe:

Quote
for instance Austria can be referred to as Central European, as well as Eastern European or Western European.

I do understand, especially towards northern europe, Austria might be considered part of the Balkan region.
We Austrians often see our country as the "gate to the east", so it's basically central europe.

We Austrians ...

Hättest ja auch was sagen können ...  ('Terminator country')

I do understand, especially towards northern europe, Austria might be considered part of the Balkan region.

Dunno about the Scandinavians, but I think that historically and culturally, it's more important having been a part of the Holy Roman Empire? That one lasted quite a while - much longer than everything that came after the breakup.

We Austrians often see our country as the "gate to the east", so it's basically central europe.

Hmmh - I've heard the theory that Austria's neutrality during the cold war played a big role in the divergent evolution of self-images of (the) German(ies) on the one hand and Austria on the other. Adenauer's 'Westbinding' firmly tied the FRG into the concept of 'The West', and the people in the GDR weren't cut off from the eastern part of central Europe like we were - while Austria was free to be ... Austria. I've only realized that we're actually central-, rather than western Europeans when the CEE countries started to join NATO and the EU.

'Gate to the East' - wouldn't 'Gate to Southern and Southeastern Europe' also be true?

I guess that also means I'm now outdated - which is pretty true, really.

The purpose of that poll is no more than to remind people that this forum has a fairly international user-base, and in particular that assumptions of a US base (which still often happens on the Internet) should be avoided.

But making any serious change to the poll means dumping all the data and starting again, which is not very useful either.

I’m pretty sure I fall under North American but geography isn’t my cup of tea. I’m Canadian. Ontario (that’s pretty much as close to where I am as I can be specific anyways without having to explain where ‘the literal middle of nowhere village’ is)
