Title: Mumble-Server!
Post by: ankhtahr on 12 May 2013, 06:44
As I had already mentioned in the WCDT, I have always had the intention of running a Mumble (Open Source Teamspeak-like (but better) VoIP system) server on my home server. It would be for the members of these forums, won't be too reliable as there will be a disconnect every 24 hours, but it should work.

I've now set up a server, but am not sure I've set the permissions correctly. So I'd like to know if anyone here wants to "beta-test"! Forum moderators would get additional rights on this server as well.

so, as I seem to have sparked a little more interest in this in the "User facts" thread, I think it would be good to move the discussions about the server to this thread.

By the way Welu: is there a specific reason you left again without even saying hello?  :cry:

Edit: Woohoo! I just managed to talk to Welu! But apparently I have to work on the permissions.

Until I fixed it you need to move to another Channel to be able to talk.

Sorry, the first time I went in I was just checking it out and my microphone wouldn't configure so I had to restart. Also I'm incredibly awkward as you may have heard. Expect me to pop in and out without saying anything sometimes.

I might try this soon. But my mic doesn't seem to be all that good? So I dunno how it will go.

Welu: Nah, I think most of us feel awkward in such a situation.

It was nice hearing you in person! Same goes for Loki, with whom I just talked while he was doing his homework.

The default channel problem should be fixed now, I had to fumble around with the server's sqlite database a bit, so I don't know if it works. If anybody who has not joined the server before could report here, whether he lands in the general or the Chatter channel it would be great!

I'm off to bed now, but I'll now frequent the server a bit more often, in the hope of more people showing up.

Also I'll give forum members more permission, and even more to Mods/Admins when I'm online. In order for me to do that you have to "register" your username on the server. You can do that by right clicking on your name and clicking "register".

Warning - while you were typing a new reply has been posted. You may wish to review your post.

Neko: Don't worry, most of us don't have good microphones (I think mine should be at least acceptable) I think. If you're worried of producing too much noise, go to the settings and switch to "push-to-talk". You then can define a "push-to-talk"-button in the "Hotkeys" section, and from then on you will only transmit sound when you're keeping that key pushed walkie-talkie style.

I have NO IDEA how to set this up. What do I have to do to connect?
Title: Re: Mumble-Server!
Post by: Loki on 30 May 2013, 15:05
Let me see if I can remember.

First step:
* Download the client (http://sourceforge.net/projects/mumble/).
* Run the installer
* Start Mumble
* Click yourself through the dialogue to configure your audio settings
* Select the menu Server->Connect
* Don't choose one from the list. Instead, "Add server" with the details:
Name: [This is the name shows up in your local server list.]
Server: mumble halfur de (with periods)
Port: 64738
Username: [username]
* move to the CHATTER room if necessary

So, short explanation typed from bed (even though you, Masterpiece seem to have figured it out already)

You download Mumble from http://mumble.sf.net (http://mumble.sf.net) and install it. Run it. Then a welcoming assistant will appear. You will be asked to set up a certificate (that is what the server will use to identify you), just click next to do so. Yeu will also be asked to configure your audio. Basically, select the right source, if you want to use voice activation adjust the two toggle volumes (at which level to start sending your voice, and at which to stop again), if you want to use push-to-talk (walkie talkie mode) you have to set a push to talk key (the button you have to keep pressed while talking). (I would advise people without headsets to use PTT, as voice activation can react badly on notebook microphones, with the result that everybody can hear you typing, a buzzing, and harddrive access sounds)

Then you're all set to join the server.
As Label you can choose whatever you like. The address is mumble.halfur.de, the port is the default one. Type in a username and connect.

Your name will appear in a list on the right side. There you can see three channels (Chatter, Comic and Relate for now), which you can join by doubleclicking on them (only one at a time). When you speak everybody in the channel will hear. While you're sending the lips icon next to your name will become red, the same applies to other people talking, so you can see whose voice you're just hearing.

Please right click on your name and click "register". That will connect your username to your certificate. Then only your program can use this username. Only drawback: if you want to log in from a different computer you need to take your certificate with you (you can export and import certificates with the "certificate manager" in the configuration menu.).

Woo, I figured it out!  I don't have a mic though, so perhaps it's a bit pointless, but that's one of the things I've been meaning to remedy anyway.

There's a text chat on my android client.

 I tried early today, no one there either.
 But at least it works  :-) .

 Maybe you should do something like "Mumble QC Chat! This friday at Xhs" so those who wanna try it connect at the same time  :-) .

[15:15:09] UDP packets cannot be sent to or received from the server. Switching to TCP mode.
[15:15:27] You were unsuppressed.
[15:16:00] You were denied Enter privileges in QC-Forums-Mumble.

(http://oyster.ignimgs.com/mediawiki/apis.ign.com/pokemon-blue-version/b/b2/Psyduck.gif)

also it won't let me type any messages, and it's also making every page i try to load in chrome fail.

[15:15:09] UDP packets cannot be sent to or received from the server. Switching to TCP mode.
That one sounds like a firewall problem on your side. Either a software firewall on your computer, or the firewall in your router. But the TCP mode should work anyway.

The privileges one is strange. Did you create a certificate when it asked you to during the initial configuration? Also it seems like you managed to join, so try registering yourself with the server (right click your name and click "register yourself"), this might fix some of the permissions trouble. Though I've seen it cause different trouble.

And the chrome thing: strange. Really strange. Only explanation I could imagine is that it's the TCP mode, but I don't really know how.

By the way: I can't join you right now, as I'm on my notebook, without a microphone, and I need to go to bed now.

Title: Re: Mumble-Server!
Post by: ankhtahr on 29 Jul 2013, 13:57
As far as I can see the Mumble-Server is now back up and running. Sadly still not in the current release (1.2.4), so we're missing out on the brand new Ogg Opus codec (which I'm totally excited about), but at least I'm not running the completely outdated 1.2.2 anymore.

The upgrade has broken some other software on the server I used a lot, but everything else works.

It has been for a while.

You might have experienced some downtime today. Sorry for that. I actually had forgotten to install fail2ban on the server, so it was flooded with automated brute force SSH login attempts.

flooded with automated brute force SSH login attempts.

What attracts them?  I mean, I've been running SSH servers for years at home and at work, on the default port, and I get constant login attempts of course - but never to the level that they impact performance or make me think "DoS".
Title: Re: Mumble-Server!
Post by: ankhtahr on 15 Aug 2013, 13:32
I don't know. It was multiple servers with multiple tries per second. Maybe it was DoSing because of something else. I found some strange log entries which could point to hardware failure at the provider. (apparently the server rebooted twice) Anyway, as soon as I had installed fail2ban most of the login attempts were blocked and the server has been running stable since.

Title: Re: Mumble-Server!
Post by: ankhtahr on 10 Sep 2013, 11:57
Hmm. Strange. The certificate is not selfsigned, and should be trusted. The certificate chain seems to be intact as well.

Which OS are you using? Does it have a central root certificate storage? I'm using a certificate issued by the CAcert, and their root certificates aren't included in all operating systems.

Edit: Should be gone now. Please tell me if it still appears.

Post by: bhtooefr on 10 Sep 2013, 15:34
Using OS X, and it appears that CAcert isn't very widely trusted at all.

The error only appeared once, and then didn't reappear (I think it was just a one-time error, that the Mumble client suppresses after that.)

In the UK that post was at 2:30pm - pretty much the least likely time for people to be passing time at their computers, I should think (for instance, I was just between travelling back from singing at a wedding, and going on to plant a flowerbed in a house we let).
