Title: Mornin'
Post by: ZoeM on 13 May 2013, 20:35
Hello all. Name's Zoe.
I recently started reading the forums (mostly after Claire showed up - she reminds me of me, sometimes), noticed I had a clone (Hello, ZoeB), and thought eh. Why not?

So, um... Twenties, trans, have a couple of birds and a chia pet - I mean, bonsai tree - and do a lot of videogamey stuff. Typical boring person, I suppose.

Welcome to the forum  :-D .

Feel free to start exploring every section, mostly "Chatter", "Discuss", and "Comic" of course.

I'm sure you'll find a lot of interesting things where you can participate too.

Well the way I see it you have two options now, you can log out, walk away and never come back. The story ends and your sanity (what there may be of it) remains intact, or you can stay logged in, start exploring the forums, jettison your sanity as excess weight and see how deep the rabbit hole goes.

Welcome, new person!

There's a thriving video game discussion or two going on.

Lots of trans people joined when Claire confided in Marten. You should encounter only matter-of-fact acceptance and the moderation team is determined to keep it that way.

Not sure what I think of that, to be honest. "Matter of fact acceptance" is by no means the only valid response to this, and I sure as heck don't feel comfortable with forcing private opinion to conform to public ideal or be silenced.

Put another way, I am perfectly fine with disagreement, and it bothers me more that it's not allowed than that it exists.

Hello, new Zoe! I think I might've come across a "ZoeM" as a commenter on a twitter-discussion a little while ago, actually.

I think you'll find he's more-so talking about outright derogatory things or plain bad behaviour; not so much that people can't have different opinions. Also that since there's several of us around it's not like one runs into hostility just based on who you are.

Mighta been me. Was this Twitter doppelgänger broadly conservative and prone to jabs at various political figures of note?

On dissent: Ok - if it's just about derogatory comments I have no problem with it. I may be kinda jumpy around well-meaning attempts to enshrine one part of who I am at the expense of the other.

Sounds like the same, yeah. I think the Bio mentioned being a Conservative transwoman, so I guess there's probably not a huge number of those also named "Zoe M".

We don't allow hate speech, and incivility of any kind is jumped on.  I don't expect our policies to make any problems for you.  Look around threads on potentially troublesome subjects - it should become clear enough.

I would say in my opinion that civil discussion of sensitive topics and various viewpoints is both useful and critical to being better people, both individually and as a civilization. Hostility, bigotry and general nastiness though don't have a part in civil discussion... And that's what is tried to be avoided here.

Welcoming diversity includes diversity of opinion. In conduct, however, civility is mandatory in this microscopic speck of Internet.

In my brief time here I've observed a few differences of opinions, and everyone's been pretty cool about it.  Actually discussing and attempting to understand the other point of view.

Kinda weird when contrasted with RL

I'd forgotten: The only Zoe I'd heard about before the forum was Zoe Lewis, a performer who sings one of the funnier songs I've listened to. On an album called "Small is Tremendous," the song "Snow White" is about the day Snow White said the F-word, at Disney World, of all places. It's available on iTunes as a single.

The F-word? In the same vein as the remake of The Parent Trap (), "my father"?
