The last Mafia game I ran probably turned into one of the bloodiest games so far with just one survivor.
I'm hoping to repeat that this time around!
The concept is very simple. Its based on the horror film The Thing, and if anyone wants an idea for the storyline, it's shortly after the events of the film (the game never happened), and a research team is now beset by an infected member of their team.
There will be a few differences in this game. Namely;
There will be a number of Things among you, but you don't know who they are and they don't know who the others Things are.
Everyone will know who has what roles, you know who the Doctor is, who the Soldier is. Everyone will have a role to play.
The Things will be able to infect others, but these newly infected Things will have no idea who infected them. It will be risky though.
Game days will be shortened (No 72 hours to play through day, it'll be 24 hours for days and 24 hours for night).
Lynchings will be done differently. How? Gotta sign up to find out.
So? Who wants to play? If I can get 14 players, great, but more will make it more fun.

Yes, I vigilante killed you, but that was a completely different game... Like that horror game was the only one I was legitimately disappointed in being killed first because I like horror movies. Which is really the only reason I'm participating in this one.

To be fair, Linds, you were kind of the most obvious target to remove in Mafia 5. You track record made your elimination a priority....
From the looks of it, Mafia 10 will be the last game for a while as everyone recharges. I suspect we'll all be rarin' to kill each other in August.

Also bear in mind that we have no idea how many Things are out there. And all of them are allowed an action per day. I think that justifies nerfing them.

Mars Terrence Pistorious = Masterpiece. I was going to go with Pisces as surname, but that sounded too plain.

Are we defining boring as not RPing a lot? The whole point of the game is to get rid of the other faction first and that's usually through arguments and poking holes in each other's logic. I don't think anyone actively doing that whether RPing or not is being boring. I get that people would like more RP to go on in these games and I'm willing to play along because I want to help create that balance that satisfies everyone, but I'd hate to have to discourage the whole point of the game to do it.

Seeing as how the last game ended pretty quickly, I wanted this game to at least have a chance to run a bit longer (Not too long though) and something a bit different for this last game. Just watching the films that only one person was not killed by the Thing in the John Carpenter film. But I want there to be distrust, with a sense of people keeping things to themselves, hence no PM between players. If you guys want to kill each other, ok, I'll add an amendment to the rules during the Night Phase.

i think that's kind of the opposite way it worked in the movie isn't it? the reason the blood reacted was because every part of the organism was an independent life form that would fight for it's own survival even when it meant killing or compromising others of it's kind.

i think part of the difference we're having here is that some of us are more interested in the role playing aspect of this, while others are more interested in the game side of things.
Which is fine as long one side doesn't start insisting the other is "wrong".

Make sure you watch the Thing, it's quite a good movie. But the premise is basically that nobody is to be trusted and everybody doubts everyone. I don't know if it's on google play, I don't use it. But if everything else fails, PM me and I'll hook you up with something.

The flamethrowers are a little too violent - if you test a whole person then there's a risk they'll be killed whatever the outcome. Blood samples wouldn't survive the testing either.

Also the test could be even better, by having the people in another room, so they don't see the flame, and every reaction is definitely caused by the things reaction to heat.
But I don't feel like discussing this much more, as such a method would be against the sense of the game.

I prefer OOC discussions to beled over here, so I'll answer to mtmerrick's post in the game thread.
I though it was possible to lead private conversation (private in the sense that only a limited set of character has the information) as long as it's being led publicly. Characters not in the room don't have knowledge, even though the player does. But maybe I'm exaggerating the roleplaying aspect.

The commander, at some point after his initial celebratory drink, seemed to had found room for several more. Of course, the motion required to properly damn his apparently gamey leg sent him entirely off balance, and he crashed mightily to the floor. "Ain't No Thing Gonna Eat These Legs!" he says loudly and with bizarrely perfect enunciation, though the belch that punctuates it is a little less than formal.

Ok, before anyone asks what happened to J, two dice were rolled with a random number generator.
The first dice was to see if J would be shot, a 30% chance of someone snapping and opening fire, a d100 dice was used.
The second was a d13 to randomly determine who would be the shooter, who snapped.

As you can see in the photo, a 74 was rolled on a d100, meaning someone snapped. The list that the shooter was chosen from was the list in the game thread's first post, so in this case, 1 meaning MtMerrick.

Because when I rolled for who the shooter was, I never adjusted the dX dice so that it was d13. It was d1, so no matter what happened, it was always going to roll 1. So to roll d13 again would be unfair to J, MtMerrick and unfair to whoever was rolled. So rather than put three people through that, I'll admit I made a mistake and grant J a reprieve for tonight. After all, there's always tomorrow night. :wink:

Unicorn decided to off the Commander. I allowed it on the premise that Unicorn had to write up a scene for the Commander and if it was interesting. And it was.

It might be a good idea for someone to take over as commander. They'll get the commander's responsibilites and abilities. But this will have to be a group decision.
Also, Method give a gun to someone else, no one is going to trust the guy with two guns. You may choose who at your own discretion.

Now, misspelling a one letter string with a Levenshtein distance (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Levenshtein_distance) of 1 is a whole other matter entirely. Calculating that is left as an exercise to the reader. (Actually, I think it's exactly 3*sizeOfUnicodeTable).

The latter statement is a meta gaming thing... has nae been on the mafia faction before? I honestly don't remember, but she might be pretty good at playing both sides similarly, which would void that line of reasoning (and make her a dangerous player).
The former argument is generally true, but it doesn't stop a Thing from doing the opposite thinking it will mask their status better. There were certain things about her craziness that made me a little ambivalent and throw my vote her way (plus I had no better ideas).

Well they don't have a Universal Translator like Star Trek, so having all the cultures speak different language would have been correct, but really tiresome for the audience. It's a pretty illogical but better than the alternative.
Anyway, since there seems to be quite some interest, you'll hear from me in a few days. There are a lot of details to be worked out, because I don't want this to be just the classic Mafia with names from Stargate. It'll be a little different. :)

personally, i think it would have been interesting to use ancient egyptian as the galactic language, which the various characters could learn to speak to different extents as the show went on. especially seeing as it was such a major plot point in the movie.

True, but to do that they would either have to use subtitles or again switch to english and just somehow imply that currently Egyptian is being used, or else you couldn't understand a word (unless you speak ancient Egyptian yourself, I suppose). It's an interesting concept, but I don't see how they could have made it work.

I did have the film but the only copy that I could find was a Greek release, meaning that while I could understand the English parts, the Egyptian/Goa'uld parts were subtitled in Greek.
I didn't enjoy it as much as I could have.

Oh, it deserves a lot of love, but I did try to train my cat with commands in Goa'uld. It failed because she's a cat, not because my Goa'uld isn't awesome.

The movie is awesome. I never watched the show, but I love dorky James Spader and that movie makes me happy. (Sci-fi, action adventure, and Egyptian(ish) themes - three things I love!)
