 Holy...

I just grew a beard in 2 secs.

This looks like a good year for Zack.

So we're going from Sparta to Athens?

...the kind of over-the-top machismo that defines the franchise loses something from moving to Athens, doesn't it?

Not quite.

We imagine Athens as the cradle of democracy and a centre of the arts, but in truth Athens was as much a military power as Sparta was, albeit as a naval power rather than as a land power.

the thing i always found clever & interesting about the original 300 is when you realize that the whole thing is being told by Dilios. the guy who got sent home before the battle ended, specifically to tell said story and rally the greeks.

everything from "we spartans are the manliest men in the world, and the athenians are a bunch of pussies" to "the traitor was a weak deformed reject, and the xerxes is a big gay body-mod fetishist" is essentially self-aggrandizing spartan propaganda.

the movie is basically a really subtle stealth parody of it's self.  like if paul verhoeven had ever heard of the concept

a naval power

And since they also had so many philosophers, were they also a navel power?

Go find a barrel and sit in the corner and think about what you did there.

battle of Salamis eh? Chances are we'll see some of Plataea or some of the Spartans will be on the boats (to help bridge the protagonists from the old to the new movie).  So the Persian navy is commanded by a woman?  Perhaps the lack of women warriors spurred this?  This is one of my favorite parts of history to learn (ever since I was a little kid in 1st grade roman and greek history was my passion! even got the neighboring kids to fight it out as hoplites and legionaries against barbarians) so I may be a bit picky on some things but I still enjoyed the first one.  It gets me amped up to go lift weights.  I will say I am glad this is a sequel and not the rumored prequel.

Also even though they showed a person fire a fire arrow into a boat and made it explode (or so it looked) I am glad they are showing real greek navel battles with boardings and rammings. :-D

Well, the movie will cover a few things:
 - How Xerxes became a "God King".
 - The Battle of Artemisium (Naval, Thermopylae's battle at the same time).
 - The Battle of Salamis, Artemisia taking the lead here? Themistocles would be the center of the movie with her though.
