So my son and I saw this movie this afternoon, and it's better than it has any right to be. I mean, a movie about plastic bricks released in February, the traditional dumping ground for bad movies? But it's actually pretty good. Think Toy Story meets The Matrix and you'll be in the right ballpark.
But what it actually reminds me of are the stories my nine-year-old son tells when he is playing with his Legos: Amazing, wildly inventive mashups of every movie, TV show or story that my son knows. Because, in the end, that's exactly what it all turns out to be - a nine-year-old boy's playtime fantasy. But a totally brilliant one. So never mind that Batman shows up in the Old West and the Millenium Falcon randomly appears above a pirate ship - it doesn't need to make perfect sense.
Saw it last night... it was laugh-out-loud funny throughout, albeit a little too well-adapted to the post-spongebob generation in terms of pacing, cuts etc. Some of the best animated movies work for both kids and adults, and this one did, but the kid-friendly writing was geared especially towards younger kids. Doesn't matter. It was a blast and the last 30 mins of the movie were just perfect. On the way home we kept overhearing little snippets of conversation about people's lego-memories. This is a movie that really connects with its audience :)
The Duplo crossover was one of my favourite scenes
SPACESHIP!
Also, Matt, don't feel ashamed. I want Unikitty SO BAD.
Also yes, the Duplo line was the best.
This movie is awesome. Saw it saturday evening.
I lost my shit when the millennium falcon showed up. I was like an excited little kid! :-D
all in all a great movie!
EVERYTHING IS AWESOME!!!
The whole thing as a metaphor of who exactly Legos are for is perfect. And the Duplos at the end are PERFECT for a sequel!
