Title: WCDT: 2475-2479 (24-28 June, 2013) Weekly Comic Discussion Thread
Post by: westrim on 23 Jun 2013, 11:34
There are of course many other distinctive styles of facial hair that may be pretty nice, but I didn't want 50 options in the poll. Soul patches are never an option.

So, will the focus on Dora or Sam continue, or will it switch to a different part of the gang?

Different part of the gang.

And if you wear a beard then it should be one that would make a dwarf proud - or ZZ Top jealous.

The main QC characters dressed up as Final Fantasy characters.

Is it just me or is the comic image broken/missing?

This has happened to me a couple of times (and today), and clicking the Previous and Next comic buttons has got me there.  I suspect there is some strangeness in the caching system that causes a delay at the update.  The Previous and Next URLs are less likely to have be cached recently, so behave better.  Because of the structure of the caching service, this effect might vary in different countries.

The Momo/Marigold relationship is hard to map into human terms (which may be the whole point!). Momo is acting like a mom, a kid sister, a big sister, and a close friend depending on the situation.

Depressed? Clearly you don't understand the extent to which we night hawks loathe the morning. I've taken a swing or two at people trying to get me out of bed early and had almost no recollection of it later.

They look like either pajamas or yoga pants.

If pajamas, not something you'd normally wear out in public. If yoga pants, their cromulence is questionable in public.

If you don't have to answer to anyone's schedule but your own, which I don't think she does, the trick isn't to sleep earlier. It's to stay up later and later each day until you've come full circle.

The Momo/Marigold relationship is hard to map into human terms (which may be the whole point!). Momo is acting like a mom, a kid sister, a big sister, and a close friend depending on the situation.

Momo is acting like a personal assistant to a CEO-type. Personal assistants often spend a lot of time managing their bosses - in the business world it's called "managing up" - and that's what Momo is doing. She's looking after Marigold's best interests, using whatever techniques are necessary to convince Marigold to do what she needs to do. This is clearly why Momo was matched with Marigold; Marigold needs help navigating social situations, as well as the occasional kick in the pants to get her motivated, and Momo will give her that.

That's not managing upward. Managing upward is phrasing your ideas such that if your manager fails to say no, you can claim they gave you permission to go ahead and/or construing the orders they do give in such a way as to allow you to do what you want regardless of what was actually intended. Basically treating your immediate superior as an incompetent moron who has to be worked around rather than with. For specific examples, see all of Dilbert ever.
It's also a close cousin of viziering, where you claim the manager's authority on your behalf without explicit authorisation.

If it was a legitimate tazing, the human body has ways to shut that down.

There, there's your "akin" joke in the context of tazing.

There was a bit of a backlash over here a while ago about an advert for Tesco (a UK supermarket, for those not in the know). They kept asking people wearing pyjamas to leave the store - after having just released a TV advert explaining how you can shop at any time and illustrating the point by showing...people shopping in their pyjamas.

Aren't those the same purple sweat pants she's worn before?  Repeatedly?  As in, almost every time we see her?

If she was asleep when Momo left (before 9, probably closer to 8 AM), and is waking at 6 PM, that's at least 9 - 10 hours of sleep, in addition to whatever she got before Momo left.  At the least she needs to brush the morning fuzz off her teeth, or she's going to knock over her barista when she gives her order...

Momo did say Marigold is good to her, but I suspect Momo needs more interaction than she gets.

Jeph has got to start the obvious Marigold/Dale love arc somehow, I guess injecting him into Coffee of Doom would be a good way to start.

*Edit: Added the word obvious, because I didn't make it want to seem like I'm shipping, I just feel like that's what Jeph is going to do, narrative causality compels him. I mean the tsundere Anime relationship parallel is just too good to pass up for Marigold.

I hate it.

I don't want Dale working at COD.  I mean, she's already got THREE employees, and is really so busy that she needs a fourth?  Obviously, we have no way of knowing that, so clearly that's not what bothers me about it.  It just doesn't fit that he'd work there.  UUUUUUUUUGGGGGHHHHHH i really don't like it.  He's just a random throw-in character that no one really knows but Marigold?  Why throw him into the COD mix?  Why not just have him talk to Marigold and bring him in that way?  Besides, it... just.... dammit, it's just not right.

Le sigh.

Welcome, new person!

Thank you for checking the rules first. In this case, the comic itself has shown some standard tropes of the boy-meets-girl plot. This would be considered "speculation" rather than "shipping".

Actually, the ability to conceive generally requires the presence of participants both with and without uteri.

And yes, it being 2:30 A.M. in my timezone has made me completely forget that the "bitchy female barista" thing is part of their image and Dora already wouldn't hire Marten partly because of that.

Dale's close enough to Dora to have access to the Secret MenuTM. On phone so can't archive-fu it up. So I don't think it's out of nowhere for him to chance asking.
Unless one of the other workers suddenly becomes less available, I don't see Dale getting a job. It would be nice to see more of him.

Whereupon they will both embarrass themselves and each other with their bizarre flirting rituals, purple pants and glowing glasses.

Le sigh.

^this. I'm seriously hoping dora shoots him down.

^this. I'm seriously hoping dora shoots him down.

I hope she doesn't shoot him down. I hope she politely says she isn't hiring. After spending all day walking around town, asking "You wouldn't happen to be hiring, would you?", getting shot down by a close acquaintance is not what a soul needs.

But the other trope relating to that phrase is that nobody is ever hiring, so likely he won't get a job at CoD, but as Carl-E said, he has arrived at just the right moment for Marigold to soon wish she'd put on real pants.

That actually would make sense.
Dora to say no but SB is in need of someone to do deliveries and help at the counter.
That way we would see more of him without him actually working at CoD, and his car would smell of fresh roasted beans and baked goods and that beats the hodgepodge of stale pizza toppings and grease any day of the year except for maybe Robbi Burns Birthday.
Come to think of it, a lot of the jobs I got in an earlier life were the result of someone I knew at a place I was applying to, telling me of one somewhere else where they knew a manager/owner.

But I don't see any of the usual suspects being quite experienced enough to carry out the duties of the day-shift manager of tSB or whatever title would best describe Padma's job. Faye possibly, but I doubt she is interested at this time with all the sculpting and such. HannerMom might like to see her daughter try out small time management, but I'm not sure Hanners would enjoy it? She might be a natural though (aided by generous amount of ativan)?

I don't quite understand the ongooing Daaaleeeeing. Was it not Dale who gave the word DAAANG (http://questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=1640) to QC? Ok, may be it was Dale1.0?

I don't understand the Dale hate... he's been shown to have ties to other characters than just Marigold, having him closer to the inner circle strengthens his character development opportunities, adding an employee would allow Dora to actually grow her business (should she decide to go after the wholesale coffee market with her best-we-know-of coffee in *hampton).

It feels like a story line that wants telling about a compelling character, looking forward to seeing where this goes.

The thing is, he isn't a compelling character yet.  He's that guy who delivers pizza, is a good enough CoD customer to get secret menu privileges, and may or may not act in a creepy manner toward Marigold.  And he takes video games way too seriously.

Have I missed anything, or is that pretty much the sum total of what we know about Dale?

Not to say that I think this is a bad thing.  Note the qualifier 'yet' in my first sentence.  I think this is a great chance for Jeph to actually give Dale some characterization beyond being a weirdo game shut-in who acts questionable creepy toward another weirdo gamer shut-in.  The fact that he wants out of pizza delivery can be the start of some excellent character development, and Dale needs it.

I can see Dale getting hired. I'd like to see a lot more characterization from him as well. We need another male character to get some more -positive- points upon him. As from what I've seen, many of the males introduced or became more regular in the past year or two have managed to get a bad rep, and somehow have managed to get some kind of unforgivable hate towards them.

... Either you guys's coffee shops have really short hours or you work like, 80 hours a week. Because where I'm from 5 people with 2 on a shift (which we've seen almost constantly, 1 person on a shift at coffee of doom is the exception not the rule, hell 2 people plus Dora there isn't uncommon) would be working crazy hours to keep a coffee shop open. Keep in mind that Dora has to come in early on the mornings and roast coffee, and Hanners iirc is only part time.

Then again, maybe I'm just used to coffee shops in a college town where the bars close at 2am and coffee shops are open later to catch the too drunk to drive home yet crowd. And you have to be open early enough to grab the people going in to work.

The idea that there isn't room for another person is a bit weird to me. I always wondered how she ran it with so few when there were always two people on shift for most hours (which makes sense fictionwise because its hard to have interesting work conversations without coworkers)

Also, I think whether he and Marigold eventually have a romantic thing or not, there's an opportunity there for Marigold to get a new friend who maybe has more in common with her, which could be a healthy development, depending.

In his last major appearance (#2357) he mentioned that he had several other jobs besides delivering pizza (busing tables, walking dogs). So unless he's thinking of quitting all of those as well, he'd only be part-time at CoD.

I agree that Dale needs more characterisation if he's going to become a more regular character. He also needs more to do than just be that guy who seems to spend most of his time annoying Marigold. I'm not sure that joining the CoD staff is the best way to do that though. After all when was the last time we saw Cosette or Penelope? Or Raven?

This ^. Now that you've explained it, I don't see how anything else can happen. It's dramatically necessary.  8-)

The Secret Bakery lost an employee recently.

And this ^. That'd be the perfect solution: CoD stays all-female, SB gets back up to full complement, Dale's car smells better (or at least different), and we get to see Dale more because CoD and SB already have a business arrangement (the coffee-for-pastries deal).

I'm still confused. Is there some connection between A Clockwork Orange and pizza?

Well, according to that Wikipedia link, the main character of the film is "a charismatic, sociopathic delinquent whose interests include classical music (especially Beethoven), rape, and what is termed 'ultra-violence'." We already know Dale likes to play WoW in a fairly violent manner; throw in a liking for Beethoven, and...?

At least, that's my interpretation of what K1dmor meant with that Clockwork Orange link, but I could certainly be wrong. Or Truec might be correct about it being an Evangelion reference instead.

I'll throw up a third theory, just to confuse you. I'd guessed that Akima was merely suggesting (someone obliquely) that Dale might go deaf if Hanners keeps screaming next to him like that. Your theories are clever, though.

The "Ode to Joy", composed by Beethoven, is a popular song that you could hear playing in the TV series of Evangelion (not the manga).

Also, one of the charactes (Guendo Ikari) looks a lot like Dale (or the other way around) and his glasses are shining most of the time too.

If you do hear it while reading the manga, either you or someone nearby has good taste in music or you need psychiatric evaluation.

Looking at the comic again, I'm actually disappointed that Hannelore's shout didn't shock Dale into delighting his glasses.

I didn't realize that Dale was one strapping a backpack until this strip- I assumed it was a shoulder bag with only one strap.

The "Ode to Joy", composed by Beethoven, is a popular song that you could hear playing in the TV series of Evangelion (not the manga).

But it is still mentioned in the manga (when Shinji meets Kaworu the first time, he is sitting at a piano playing a tune he'd heard, and asks Shinji what it is - it's the Ode to Joy).

But honestly, Gendou glasses or no, it's easier to make the Beethoven link to Clockwork Orange than to Evangelion.

I thought Raven was in college studying physics and that's why she doesn't work at CoD anymore. I know Jeph brought her back for a summer job, but college could have started again by now.
Hopefully we get to see more of Penelope again some time, I really like her. I have the feeling that characters become sort of boring to write when in a happy relationship, so they appear less (Penelope+Wil, Steve+Cosette). I guess I can understand that a little, but I still miss Penelope. And Wil was fun, too.

I was thinking something more like: In the movie, they make the protagonist hear Beethoven when he's on "treatment"; then, he can't stand hearing his music again because of that. Dale works everyday delivering Pizza, and now he can't stand it anymore.
Exactly so. I had in mind the aversion therapy/brainwashing scene from "A Clockwork Orange" with the stench of pizza standing in for the drugs used on Alex.

Do comic characters have a quantum existence, like Schrödinger's Cat; simultaneously present and absent until the cartoonist includes them in a panel and collapses the probability wave?

This seems to be the case. "Bros, bros, bros!"

Hmm. Something doesn't fit. The bros also vanish immediately after having served their purpose. May be in the comic quantum physics the principle is: what has been seen/observed can also be unseen?

Coffee and pastry delivery, sure. What are these cassette tapes of which you speak? (Kidding. I owned vinyl records before it was remarkable to do so.) However, it's past time to hire Marigold to update CoD's website to include a new -- Vine? (See how hip I am not?) -- of Faye's Sass of the Day, perhaps an insulting recitation of the Specials.

OK, Penelope and Cossette. Scene's over. Back in the counter cabinet.

I admit I have no idea when college starts again in the US after the summer break. When university in Germany starts again, it's sometimes still warm enough to wear short sleeves (beginning of October), though not for very long.
If not to college, then maybe Raven went on a trip again. Canada? I suppose Jeph himself does not always invent excuses for characters in his head. It's probably mostly not a conscious decision when a character goes off-screen for a while. Must be hard to get everyone in with so large a cast. But I bet Sven, Wil and Raven will reappear sooner or later.

Most colleges and schools in the US start late August / early September (some wait until after the Labor Day holiday, which is the first Monday in September).  They run 14/15/maybe 16 week semesters (with some time off in November for our Thanksgiving, and maybe some in October for a mid-semester break) ending in December for the Christmas/New Year's holiday.  Then it's back sometime in January for another semester, running until early / mid May.

Then there are the summer sessions, "May-mesters" (seriously, a whole course in under 5 weeks?) and other oddball sessions.  Also, some schools run on a "tri-mester" or quarter system, each session running 10 or 11 weeks with a two or three week break between each one.  The summer quarter is usually optional, and the winter one has a break in the middle for the holidays during which everything is forgotten.

So yeah, short sleeves in late hot-as-hell August when everyone's back-to-school would not be unusual.

Thinking of Raven, I seem to recall that she went to study physics as a grad student and not an undergrad. Generally physics departments pay stipends to their grad students so they don't have to find work during the summer and can stay and do research (or teach so that the professors can take a break during the summer).

How much more do we know about Marigold Farmer? She's a computer geek instead of pizza deliveryperson. She's a gold farmer after all. She has poor hygiene. She takes video games even more seriously than Dale. She's been in orbit around the Earth.

She likes Yaoi and likes Angus (though not to the degree that she did before, y'know, DRAMA), she has a AnthroPC that she cared about enough to get a human sized body at a price likely equivalent to a cheap car or more, she does web development, at least some of which is for her dad, she got face time (ifyouknowwhatImean) with a rocket scientist and lab time with a laser scientist, likes spathe ham, went to college with Angus, had a less than existent social life before adoption by the Marten and Faye Society for Wayward Youths, doesn't like beer, she has boobs that are literally bra popping, she has bad but slowly getting better self esteem, she can be bluntly rude and hypocritical, she and Sven banged each other on a sidewalk etc, etc (I added those before writing two more lines)... we know quite a bit.

Dale has had two jokes going so far; rivalry with Marigold and pizza delivery. Both had good runs and were amusing treatments of a character, but now Jeph is transferring him from joke character (like the Bros) to cast.

I think the reason Penelope and Cosette aren't appearing much these days is that Jeph is not interested in writing them at the moment. I do like his occasional throwbacks to forgotten characters, though, as they're usually well-timed and in good taste.

He has additional jobs (http://www.questionablecontent.net/1680) bussing tables and walking dogs (http://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=2358). He's sufficiently good at the social aspects of WoW to be a leader of some kind (http://www.questionablecontent.net/1693) though he definitely bit off more than he could chew going after MarBear and afterward was suitably impressed (http://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=2359).

Creepy though he may be, there's a fumbling human side to him as well (http://questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=1771). And, even though Marigold fired the first shot (http://www.questionablecontent.net/1668), he's got enough grace and social awareness to want to set things right after she bested him, and he knew Marigold's favorite pizza (http://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=2414) was the way to do so.

Now he's in the CoD looking for a new gig, no longer satisfied to be permeated by pizza, showing he's got enough drive in him to want to change his situation for the better. I find that all compelling, and I'm impressed that Jeph was able to show all that in only about a dozen appearances.

I really hate to keep harping on that point, because I've literally never had an issue with Jeph's drawing before, but I lose my Willing Suspension of Disbelief every time I see Dale's face.

You don't need much Suspension of Disbelief for a four-panel webcomic, especially one with breeding Roombas and Holoponies...so the fact that I could lose it at all was somewhat surprising to me.

So I'm afraid I can't take Dale seriously as a character until the glare goes away. Perhaps I'll be a minority of one...but somebody has to shake their fist at that cloud.

It seems to me that when it comes to resumes, less is more so long as you don't leave time gaps and make clear the times you were working 3 jobs. But you don't have to mention the week you spent manning the booth at a fair, unless you're submitting a resume for a job booth running again. People who include absolutely everything like Dale just end up distracting the hiring manager, and distraction equals dismissal.

bring back Padma!
No, Padma served her purpose as far as Marten and the plot go. There's no reason for her to come back.

What I wanna know is how he works those multiple jobs, and has any sort of leader position in any MMO. Online games are something that it's hard to run a guild, or even a small team, unless you have a sufficient amount of time to. And unless he has the horrible luck of working 3-4 hour shifts for every job he's been hired for (which can happen), or he isn't sleeping, there's something suspicious about it.

It wouldn't be necessary for him to be a leader of any kind for that scene. He could just be playing with some friends, maybe with other members of his guild. I don't think you need to be a guild leader or something like that for asking a favour of others.

I'm going with the Google Glass idea with his glasses. It's obvious they have the tech. He may have gotten them after that first appearance, and it helps with his Pizza Delivery job, because he can get directions and new pickups for delivery in an instant.

As long as his glasses are still shining, he's still a joke character.

I agree that this perpetual glare is really weird. I liked Dale in his first appearences, before the glare began (those with the talk about the secret menu). The glare was fitting for some of the WoW gags after that, but in this arc, normal eyes would have been much better, in my opinion. Never seeing someones eyes makes me somehow sympathize less with them. Somehow Dale without real eyes seems much less human to me (in the sense of having a personality. In that sense, Momo is much more human than Dale).

I'm still a bit disappointed that the only two things that spring to mind for most people when they hear "Beethoven" are the Ode to Joy and the beginning of the fifth symphony. Beethoven made so much great music! I'll admit, I'm a Beethoven fan, especially the sixth symphony and the "Coriolan" are amongst my favourite pieces of music at all.

Dora isn't sure she has an opening.

It would be weird if we had this much screen time about Dale's application and he didn't get hired.

Is someone about to leave, leaving a slot for him to fill?

Will Cosette stumble down the stairs and be eaten by spiders? Will the Pugnacious Peach move to New York? Will Pennelope start editing ebooks? Will Hannelore take over her mother's business? Will Raven evaporate into thin air?
