Title: Favorite covers thread

So there was one of these but it hasn't been posted in since 2005.  So maybe it's time for a new thread?

My favorites are not from widely renown bands or artists, but renown in the YouTube community. Two of my favorites:

Birdy- Skinny Love (Bon Iver) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aNzCDt2eidg)
Drew Tabor- Born to Die (Lana del Rey) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sUX23bvLS3M)

Not a big Linkin Park fan, but I do really enjoy this cover of Adele's Rolling in the Deep. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dHtwZ07N1ic)

In the category of "covers that are better than the original," Johnny Cash - Hurt (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3aF9AJm0RFc).

I completely agree with the Johnny Cash cover. Infinitely better than the original. Also, wow, I didn't know Linkin Park did an Adele cover. I quite like it.

Love this cover, and the original, but especially the cover.

When I saw Jonathan Coulton live, he and Paul and Storm performed Birdhouse In Your Soul by They Might Be Giants and that memory fills me with lots of happy.

You guys, I just realized something...

...I'm a Cylon!

I think I should have linked WOTE's version of Payphone (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SOUwxaAmoAk) instead of Trouble.  Way better.  They get points for rewriting the terrible rap bridge, too.

Is it just me, or is "take terrible songs and make them awesome" WOTE's, like, thing?

So, I liked this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xPRE35kjOcI) when I first heard it just because, you know, Mountain Goats.  But then I listened to the original, and the lyric changes make it even more awesome/hilarious.  Favorite change:

You don't know
What I'm all about,
Like killing cops
And reading Kerouac.

You don't know

And reading Didion.

Sally's Song performed by Amy Lee. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RQj2iOEx-V8) There's a few pretty covers of that song but this is the one I usually find myself listening to semi-regularly.

I can't stop listening to this Wrecking Ball cover (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BHF0gsRsNBw).

Also, I only found out recently that this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S1WFEFb3Q18) was a cover.  I looked up the original (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cCPbr8iLXE8), and it's okay, but no better than that.  Which was really disappointing, because I fucking love The Field Mice, and hoped the dude's other band would impress me just as much, but I really think the Mountain Goats version is better.

Those are all pretty great.  As for each one:

1.  Haha, I apparently never actually knew the lyrics to Kids.

2.  The dude with long hair in the Ukelele Orchestra looks like Bob from Twin Peaks and it's freaking me out.

3.  Julia Nunes has a really nice-sounding over-enunciation thing going on with her voice, in addition to ukeleles being awesome.

Better than Rainin' Blood by Tori Amos?

Nothing beats Hellsong's super cheerful cover of Symphony of Destruction (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xecz3VdPixM), with the possible exception of Paranoid (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DWLHSRnVqug), which comes off so natural, especially with the video I linked to.

But I can't mention Hellsongs without bringing up The Cardigans' Sabbath Bloody Sabbath!

I can think of several. Off the top of my head and in no particular order:
"Macarthur Park" (The Negro Problem)
"Come as You Are" (Caetano Veloso)
"Friend of the Devil" (Lyle Lovett)
"Everybody's Happy Nowadays" (Carter the Unstoppable Sex Machine)
"Oops I Did It Again" (Richard Thompson)
"Supernaut" (Black Box version, 1,000 Homo DJs w/Trent Reznor)
"Tiempo Sin Respuesta" (Pedro Aznar, cover of Nick Drake's "Time of No Reply")

And I'll second (or third, or whatever) the Johnny Cash version of "Hurt."

I think you have to do the whole link to get the embedding to work, not just the video ID part. But yes, I love this cover!

My own contribution.

And I might as well add a video I shot the other night for a local Beatles tribute show featuring 21 acts and 58 different songs from 1964 and earlier. This was the first act; I'm still working on a full-night video.

Title: Re: Favorite covers thread

Title: Re: Favorite covers thread
Post by: Thrillho on 11 May 2014, 15:24
Also, in this day and age, they've ruined their SEO. Anyone who ever Googles them will now only find the Robin Thicke song.
Title: Re: Favorite covers thread
Post by: Welu on 11 May 2014, 15:56
That as well. The sooner they change it the better for making a smoother transition but maybe they're hoping they'll be found by someone searching for the song? That's not how it works but it's definitely how some people think it does.
Title: Re: Favorite covers thread

For my TV show back in April, we filmed a Bob Dylan tribute show that was dedicated to his acoustic era of 1964 and before. There was a lot of great local talent involved, such as Gabriel Nelson of Cake, Kepi Ghoulie of the Groovy Ghoulies, Jonah Matranga of Far, and many or our other top notch locals, both veterans and up-and-comers, so the average quality of this show was quite exceptional.

For the TV show, we're taking 25 of the total 41 song performances (we did allow a couple of songs that he didn't write, but helped make famous) broken into 4 half-hour episodes. 3 have aired, and I'm currently uploading the 3rd to the show's YouTube page. The final episode will air next Tuesday, with the YouTube upload following a week after that.

Here's Part 1.
Direct song links:
"It Ain't Me Babe" (http://youtu.be/v8ZqzoG4wjI?t=30s) - Alexander Nelson
"The Death of Emmitt Till" (http://youtu.be/v8ZqzoG4wjI?t=3m40s) - Mason and Spencer Hoffman
"Oxford Town" (http://youtu.be/v8ZqzoG4wjI?t=8m58s) - Cory Barringer
"Let Me Die In My Footsteps" (http://youtu.be/v8ZqzoG4wjI?t=11m12s) - Jeannie Howell
"I Don't Believe You" (http://youtu.be/v8ZqzoG4wjI?t=15m28s) - Kepi Ghoulie
"All I Really Want To Do" (http://youtu.be/v8ZqzoG4wjI?t=18m50s) - Jonah Matranga
"The Times They Are A-Changin'" (http://youtu.be/v8ZqzoG4wjI?t=22m26s) - David Houston and String Theory

And here's Part 2.
"Mr. Tambourine Man" (http://youtu.be/XblMlAy3NtE?t=30s) - Erik Hanson
"Honey, Just Allow Me One More Chance" (http://youtu.be/XblMlAy3NtE?t=3m24s) - Stefan Sorgea
"My Back Pages" (http://youtu.be/XblMlAy3NtE?t=4m36s) - David Houston and String Theory
"House of the Rising Sun" (http://youtu.be/XblMlAy3NtE?t=10m20s) - Dog Party
"Mama, You Been On My Mind" (http://youtu.be/XblMlAy3NtE?t=15m34s) - Robert Kuhlmann
"Walkin' Down The Line" (http://youtu.be/XblMlAy3NtE?t=19m16s) - Jack Jules
"Only A Pawn In Their Game" (http://youtu.be/XblMlAy3NtE?t=23m02s) - Aaron Linkin

I'll be back in a bit with a post for Part 3.

And here's Part 3. The ultimate reason I wanted to post these was the final performance in this episode, where Jonah Matranga gives one of the most powerful performances I've ever seen anywhere with "With God On Our Side". If nothing else, click the direct link to this one below.

"Don't Think Twice" (http://youtu.be/3Bn6xm5d5dA?t=11m38s) - Aaron Linkin
"Boots of Spanish Leather" (http://youtu.be/3Bn6xm5d5dA?t=14m38s) - Stefan and Katherine Sorgea

I don't like his music very much, which (hypocritically) makes it even harder for me to stomach his status as a world peace icon despite being a jealous, wifebeating philanderer with nine children from different women. Lennon was also the latter, but for one thing he apologised for his behaviour later in life and was largely forgiven by those it affected, and for another I don't generally like his 'LOVE AND PEACE' bullshit music anyway, largely preferring his angry shit.

Ideally we would distance ourselves from the people behind the music to appreciate the music regardless, I suppose, which makes it easier for me to like Lennon and loathe Marley.

He has a song or two that I kind of like.

Also, streetlight manifesto/Catch 22

EDIT: To be fair, Cat Empire and the like aren't really 'ska' as such in that they are actually just much better and far more inventive than the whole third wave crapshow that started in the 90s while also remaining truer to the original music style. It's one of those genres that has sprung up in the last ten years that mimic the originals as much as possible while managing to sound cool and modern.

I've got a soft spot for a lot of ska, but there's only a few two tone bands I really like (and even then I wouldn't listen to the same album twice in one day), like the selecter, The Specials and such. Third wave wise I only really listen to heavier skacore bands and quirky covers. Maybe some No doubt here and there too. Less Than Jake is always fun, but not really amazing music.
As far as the original sixties and seventies stuff from Jamaica, it's kind of hit and miss like any genre, but great for pool parties.

I tried to get into some of the later stuff, and just couldn't. It sounded too interchangeable. There are a few bands from outside the US-UK scene that I liked (Ska-P, Los Fabulosos Cadillacs, King Chango, Los Pericos), but for the most part I tend to gravitate toward the older Jamaican stuff (Skatalites et al.) and some of the Two Tone stuff like Madness, The Specials, or The Beat.

As for Marley... I dig him, but I can't see stopping there... there's just so much other good stuff from around the same time.

Worth mentioning are her covers of Tom Waits' "Misery Is The River of the World" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rMXlu_0nUEA
and

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds' "The Ship Song" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sdLrwH2Ib68

I've also got a soft spot for Lydia Lunch and Rowland S Howard's cover of Some Velvet Morning. Pretty much listened to it a month straight back when I was 18. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bBdK7PZSCxw

Back in the 80s, the musical scene of Spain just blew up. Mostly because no more dictatorship yaaay.

It spawned a number of different scenes, and these dudes (Siniestro Total) personified the movement in Galicia. One of the hardest rock bands in Spain.

And in this particular song, they cover "Sweet Home Alabama". Obviously, their "sweet home" is Galicia, so technically their version is called "Miña Terra Galega".

Try googling "Whippersnappers Melbourne band" and you'll get some hits, including this (http://www.allmusic.com/artist/whipper-snappers-mn0001291391/biography). They weren't exactly big-time; I think their appearance on The Money Or The Gun (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Money_or_the_Gun) was the zenith of an arc spent mostly playing local pubs and clubs in Melbourne. It was all rather before my time as a consumer of Australian music and media (I was still living in China), so I don't know.

And yeah, the video is pretty rubbish, isn't it? I wonder if one of the girls turned somebody down...

Honestly, I don't know whose idea it was to make an acoustic instrumental version of the main Sonic 06 theme and put it in the game as the bonus screen music, but he's a goddamn genius. I'd argue that had I been unlucky enough to purchase that game at full price, this and the options menu music alone are easily worth the 60 bucks.

aight first off, y'all are way too kind. second off:

i'm gonna be that piece of shit that necroposts his own soundcloud 7 years after recording the cover

https://soundcloud.com/kimjongsick/im-like-a-bird-3

i regret absolutely fucking nothing, this is the best thing i've ever done lmao

People, I cannot recommend this cover highly enough. Always been devastated that I don't have a download of it; I think about this version a couple of times a year.

i will go make sure it's downloadable right now

Sally can wait for another artist to try to top Maiya Sykes legendary cover of this Oasis song.

Some Postmodern Jukebox covers are 'meh' to my ears, but some are flat out good, and sometimes even better than the originals.

Maiya Sykes friggin' knocks it out of the park with this very different and very soulful take on 'Boulevard of Broken Dreams'.

Noir movies need to make a comeback and feature songs sung by Ms Sykes, Melind Doolittle and Tess Mohr.
EDIT: typo fix

Linkin Park get lampooned for their lyrics a lot, but they meant a lot to me as a child and still do - 'In the End' in particular is too hard to listen to since Chester committed suicide because the chorus lyrics are 'I tried so hard and got so far, but in the end it doesn't even matter.'

I had to fall, to lose it all.

Dude's done a bunch of these but this was the first I heard. I didn't know I needed this but this is my new fave playlist.

A seasonally appropriate cover.

He managed to make a jazz arrangement of the Lavender Town theme and there's even lyrics.

Did everyone else run out of music to listen to?

Anyways, here's some spectacular samba.

I'm dancing to this instead of getting ready for bed.

I know some of you all won't give a single damn about this because it's an arrangement of video game music, but Jet Force Gemini holds a special place in my heart for all of the hours I spent playing it as a young teen. So, this cover means a lot to me. Being that it's arranged by Sam Dillard (Beyond the Glass (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HaQwZvaJ45Y), Chrono Trigger 600 AD Symphony: Yearning Hope (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p5tLSx1mfTY), Promise Of Mended Pieces (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7UIecawHwuo), etc) makes it even better.

This one, The Edge Calls Me, Big Bug Funk, and World Destroyer (Instrumental) are my favorite tracks from the album OCReMix released. Big Bug Funk really took me off guard because it's a military march with a funky bass line.

My all time favorite cover is Eddies Hazel's version of California Dreaming, by The Mamas and the Papas.

Not gonna lie, I don't expect this choice to make me friends, but it is one of my favs:

Scissor Sisters - Comfortably Numb

(There was at one point a video where the band were swimming, but it seems to have been pulled.)  It might be that I actually heard it before the original.  And while I'm making myself reviled, what the hell:

Elvis Presley - Yesterday/Hey Jude

(I kind of wish there were a better version, but it is what it is.)  What can I say?  I have a soft spot for the mashup, especially considering that we know, and he knew then, that this was an Elvis well past his prime.  Anyway, perhaps as a palette cleanser, something perhaps a bit less blasphemous:

Christopher Lee - My Way

...yeah, this one I don't feel quite so compelled to justify.

Even as someone who loathes that cover of Comfortably Numb, it is absolutely what I think a cover should be about - radically altering the original while still retaining enough of it to not make it pointless to cover it. It's genius.

Elvis on the other hand, to quote my father, 'loved covering his favourite songs and ruining them'

The Comfortably Numb cover is the only one of those three to stand on its merits. The other two just don't work IMO.
