Title: Dubstep 101?
Post by: UniqueNewYork on 04 Nov 2013, 13:25
I am an utter dubstep neophyte, by which I mean the Bangarang (which tried to autocorrect to Bananagrams, btw) and Scary Monsters... albums constitute my entire experience with the genre. I would love to be able to dig a little deeper, but for that I need some guidance. Sort of a ten-cent tour of the genre, or whatever ends up happening/working.

For the typical kind of dubstep you hear nowadays, the better ones are Liquid Stranger and Knife Party.

For the kind of dubstep that's less in your face, 2562, Mount Kimbie, Sepalcure and Vex'd are nice.

When you say typical, do you mean typical as compared specifically to the dubstep genre itself, or typical w/r/t that and/or the dubstep that's been sneaking into Top 40 in recent years (Too Close and I Knew You Were Trouble come immediately to mind here).

Typical as in "the song is based around the sounds of a robot getting murdered with a jackhammer"

Which I'm assuming means your posed alternative is something more like "Radioactive" (except obviously more prominent)?

I have to admit, it's been a while since I spent some time with Dubstep, but from back then I can confirm what Tai said in the comic. I prefer UK Dubstep over the typical US Dubstep.

Great artists I remember are Bar9, Mt.Eden, Nero, Flux Pavillion and such.

UKF Dubstep on Youtube is a great way of looking into UK Dubstep.

Savant. He's a Norwegian dubstep artist who's been making it pretty big the last couple of years. Has an incredible ear for melodies!
