Title: WCDT: 2573-2577 (11-15 November 2013) Weekly Comics Discussion Thread
Post by: jwhouk on 10 Nov 2013, 03:28
And here we go. I didn't want to push any buttons about "Can Emily keep a secret?", so I went the "Because I Got High" route.

Or something like that...

I'm hoping for not too much drama, because too much drama leads to people getting unreasonably angry at Jeph, which could go especially bad very quickly, given the subject that he's dealing with here.
As such, I'm hoping that Emily's idolization of Claire will be enough for her to keep it a secret.

Incidentally, I didn't say this last week, but panel 4 Claire in Thursday's strip is seriously good art. Even if Friday's strip hadn't accidentally gone up before Thursday's, I'm sure everyone would have known exactly what Claire was about to say just based on her facial expression.

I think Jeph might be setting us up for the inevitable Thanksgiving cliffhanger...Unless Dale/Marigold or Angus/Faye can fill the gap with a cliffhanger I think we might have Claire/Marten/Emily involved story until the break.

Well, of course he's setting it up. The only question in my mind is whether it will be a Dale/Marigold plot twist or a Marten/Claire plot twist. At this point I'd guess it will be something between Dale and Marigold. Either they kiss or get into a horrible fight. Maybe both.

I'd say 50% chance of a Dale/Marigold plot twist, and 40% chance of a Marten/Claire plot twist, and a 5% chance of a Dora/Tai plot twist.

Well, my fears are alleviated.  :-\

...and also Claire's "if anyone asks..." stance makes me sad.  I don't think I'm alone in thinking its going to bite her in the ass, and what makes it worse is that Jeph's almost certainly not going to go there, which is just going to leave the eternal sense something terrible will happen the moment the cameras stop rolling.

If someone asks though don't they already know the answer anyway?

But if it's any comfort nobody noticed at a gay wedding that included people in the sex industry so it's doubtful anyone will.

... Ok Emily, you've got one shot at this.

I get that people make mistakes, and Emily makes quite a few (http://questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=2242), but accidentally telling someone a secret is the kind of mistake you can't fix. There's no going back.

It's probably just as well that everyone in the cast would be totally cool with the idea, as far as we know.

Agreed, they're all commendably open-minded. Claire already has enough anxiety issues for an Ativan prescription, so you're on solid ground about her reaction. (Oh, "Marten", please).

He might set her up for another panic attack, like when Clinton blurted out that she had snuggled with Marten. Then again, probably just to make her have another close moment with either Marten or Emily. Or maybe even Tai, IDK.

Since this is a work of fiction and a darn-happy one at that,   here's what I hope.

SOMEONE blabbs the secret.     And it gets around.    And the VAST MAJORITY of people are like "yeah so?"   AND she finds out there are others like her all around her and it just doesn't matter.

I could see perennial nice guy Marten-friend swinging in for the "Dawg, you okay?" after Claire has a panic attack, mostly because he's the person Claire's closest with at the library. The panic attack may not even based on Emily doing anything, just Claire's perception of Emily, and worrying that she might slip up and tell. (Anxiety issues aren't confined to rational or logical fears) then post pep talk Claire lets a bomb drop and BOOM Turkey Week. Reconciliation with Emily would be post turkey week one.

I can't shake the feeling that Emily will inadvertently blurt this secret out at the wrong time and/or place and cause some high level drama maybe not violence Jeph hasn't had violence in the comic (That I can remember) since the Vespa Girl days, but I think it will lead to Claire moving away for a while to recover.

Emily will be be looked down upon by the rest of the cast to one degree or another and Clinton will be maxed out on hate while seriously weighing the pros and cons of at least assaulting Emily. (Obviously I don't think he would but it seem to be a good idea at the time.)

If not the above then hopefully we can move on from this arc and bury this landmine for a later time hopefully not to be brought back up.

For a sentient coffee machine you'd need:

1) An AI who wants to be a coffee machine, presumably it does happen as at least one wanted to be a toaster.
2) A coffee-shop owner willing to pay for the extra-expensive coffee-machine with the CPU power needed to host an AI, and who the Coffee Machine AI is willing to work with. Lots of extra cost for a machine that produces the same coffee - I can't see Dora going for that anytime soon. Though perhaps the Robot Cafe has one.

Forget that. The *interesting* question is exactly what kind of special are they charging $50 for.

Then again, what did Tai think they were? Still fuck-buddies(excuse my language)...
There can be a phase in which two people are going on dates, getting to know each other, and are clearly interested in each other romantically and not just looking for a fuckbuddy...  but they haven't yet reached the point of actually regarding themselves as a couple.  It's the phase of exploring whether they want to be a couple. (Some people's approach to dating skips this phase and goes from zero to "girlfriend" in one date.)

Dora started going out with Tai based on very tentative interest in someone she only knew as the "cute little redhead."  It was probably important to her to linger in the exploratory phase for a while and make sure she really wanted to get serious with Tai.  Now she seems to have decided that, yes, she really does want to...  And didn't realize it might be helpful to mention that! :D

Dora may have thought it was clearly implied by all their snuggling in bed (and maybe more, but I dunno, we haven't seen any booty dances yet).  I've had the impression that Dora generally reserves physical intimacy for serious relationships.  Tai, on the other hand, is used to being around the Smif crowd where plenty of ladies are happy to fool around with her but not necessarily make any commitments, so Dora's readiness to get in bed wouldn't automatically translate in Tai's mind to "Oh, I guess she wants to be my girlfriend."

After all, this relationship is more important to her than her previous hook-ups. So Dora dropping the girlfriend word out of the blue like that.. I can totally see it as an awesome surprise.

In this case it sounds as spelt with the extra letter; probably just how it sounds in the original dialect form.

My Shorter Oxford* dictionary gives the origin as "dialect & NZ".  So, New Zealanders, any further ideas?

Dora started going out with Tai based on very tentative interest in someone she only knew as the "cute little redhead."

Her original description of Tai was "adorable little butch girl (http://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=776)". But perhaps she used the phrase "cute little redhead" in another strip?

In 2550, Dora introduces the new employee as 'Dale'.
In 2575, Dale gets to introduce himself.
How does this fix anything?

I think his last bubble is more a response to "I'm your girlfriend" than an introduction. Just teasing her wording.
"I'm your girlfriend?"
"I'm Dale!"

Not:
"Remember Dale?"
-girlfling stuff-
"I'm Dale!"

I wasn't here before, but I'm assuming Dora originally said "this is my girlfriend, Tai" rather than "Remember my girlfriend Tai."

I took a screenshot, but I'm not really sure how to put the image into the discussion here. The original text read: "Dale, this is my girlfriend Tai."

I wish I knew how to make gifs so I could play the speech bubbles back-to-back. I had the original comic open in one tab and the new one open in another, and they look pretty awesome when I line up the images and click back and forth.

Download the GIMP, open file one, open file two as a new layer, rename both so they have a number in brackets in the layer title (this is the display time in ms), save as .gif. That's the extremely compressed tutorial that skips a whole bunch of efficiencies and explanations but there you go.

Naming dogs? Yeah, that gets pretty domestic.

Naming cats is easier since cats usually don't care (unless of course you know the Cat's True Name, which of course you never will). Public names like Maxie and Fuzzy and Mousey Tongue and Edward R. Mrrow don't count of course.

From his about page (http://norient.com/about/en/thomasburkhalter/): "Dr. Thomas Burkhalter [*1973], an ethnomusicologist, music journalist and cultural producer from Bern (Switzerland), runs the research project «Global Niches – Music in a transnational World» at the Zurich University of the Arts. He is the founder and editor-in-chief of norient – Network for Local and Global Sounds and Media Culture. His first book «Local Music Scenes and Globalization: Transnational Platforms in Beirut» was published with Routledge (New York) in 2013. His co-edited book «The Arab Avant Garde: Musical Innovation in the Middle East» is going to be published with Wesleyan University Press in November 2013."

Given Tai's musical taste for weird European stuff (or something along those lines; I can't find that page right now), I'd say Google may have the right idea.  8-)

Reverse shipping (hereafter to be referred to as "pishing", not a perfect reversal but sounds better out loud) is therefore no better than shipping in that regard.

Re: dog pun names

We got a golden retriever umpteen years ago that we named Max (unimaginative, but it was just before christmas, so he was named for the Graunch's Grinch's dog, my kids were still little).  We were told he'd probably be about 70-80 lbs, the usual size for a golden retriever.

He wound up being a fit but huge 110 lbs, as tall a a St. Bernard, and as barrel chested as a rottweiler.

A few years later, my wife found a pomeranian mix running along the back highway in the woods - no collar, black with filth, down to about 4 lbs.  We rescued her (okay, she leapt into the van), and when we cleaned her up, her fur was the exact same color as Max's.

We named her Minnie.

They were best friends, played fox & hound together (Minnie would bug Max until he chased her through the yard.  When he got tired of her running figure eights around him, he'd pin her down with a paw).

Walking them was always fun for the looks - I'd tell people they were twins.  The names (Max and Minnie) were usually good for a laugh, too.

Max passed away three years ago this weekend from liver cancer at the fairly good age of 12.  We have no idea how old Minnie is, but she's still with us.  The name has lost its pun-ch without her other half, though.

The first part is a prediction, but this sounds close to telling Jeph what he should do.

It really isn't. It's just kind of an accepted part of writing - it generally needs conflict. Without conflict there's nothing to resolve; with nothing to resolve you're just writing about people living their day to day lives in which everything goes as planned.

That said, it's not as if there's anything wrong with things actually turning out well now and then. It's not as if everything needs to be in chaos all the time. Dora and Marten, aside from the occasional spat, lasted quite a while, for instance. Cycles, peaks and valleys, blah blah blah.

Hmmm. :/
I feel like Jeph accidentally wrote himself into a corner. His characters have all grown so much since their introductions that the only way he could believably bring Dora's insecurities to the surface without bringing his characters out of character was to introduce a new character.
It's late at night where I am, so my powers of analysis are failing me, and maybe we'll see a lot more of Allie in the future, but all I can see in this update is a brand new character dropping in unannounced to say "Hi! Conflict! Bye!"
(This all says a mixture of good and bad things.)

I am not sure why everyone immediately jumps to Dora's insecurities as to why she's so angry at the new girl. It's possible that she's doing the 'my girlfriend has an ex and now she must die!' thing, but that wasn't really how she was like with Marten. I'd disagree Neko, that smirk seemed to be pretty clearly intended for Dora, not for Tai.

I am not sure why everyone immediately jumps to Dora's insecurities as to why she's so angry at the new girl. It's possible that she's doing the 'my girlfriend has an ex and now she must die!' thing, but that wasn't really how she was like with Marten. To me at least it looks more like 'Someone's giving my girlfriend shit, and now she must die!'

It seems more like Dora's insecurities flared up...and I'm seeing a bit of a no win here for Dora. If she reacts with Tai like she did with Marten she's probably going to end up freaking Tai out and causing problems for herself, though it might also show some character growth if she realizes the problem and actively confronts it (maybe even genuinely apologizing for her earlier fuckups). If she doesn't, instead trying to keep herself from going nuts she is still going to probably feel stressed and as Tai has previously been used to noncommital relationships might try something (even innocently) and end up badly hurting Dora. Either way this has the potential to be fairly interesting.

For whatever reason, I read the smirk as a comment about Dora's age. I think because it clearly looks directed at Dora and the only thing this person meeting Dora for the first time knows about her is she's Tai's girlfriend. The only thing you can really tell to look at is that she's older than Tai. It never occurred to me that Allie might be an ex till looking in this thread and I don't the comic reads as her anything more than someone friendly with Tai. Also Dora was totally happy meeting Allie till the smirk, so it doesn't read to me that she assumes Allie is Tai's ex either.

Could be the age thing, but I think it's more likely that the smirk's abut Tai having A girlfriend - after having been known around campus for her polyamory, the notion of her settling down may have inspired a "yeah, right!" reaction.

Of course, in this context, "girlfriend" need not imply "one and only".

In a situation where monogamy is the norm, you need a discussion before you assume polyandry is OK.  If polyandry is the norm, you need a discussion before you assume your relationship is monogamous.  Neither can be considered the norm here and the discussion has yet to take place, although it looks like it's about to.

There's eight more strips before Thanksgiving.

I've been thinking "Tai, you had better not hurt Dora!  :x "

I don't know what I think I'd do...  Maybe I'd learn to draw like Jeph and draw myself into a comic giving Tai a piece of my mind and so bad she hangs her head in shame for weeks?

I think the word you're looking for is "polyamoury" (the u being optional, I guess).

Hmm¹.  I don't think I'm reading a single comic in which polyandry occurs.  (Girl Genius has been teasing us with the concept, but teasing's all it's been.)  Not that I have any opening for a new comic right now ...

Hmm².  Would you call Tai's past polyamourous relationship polygyny, or would that be unnecessary stretching of the word?

Could be the age thing, but I think it's more likely that the smirk's abut Tai having A girlfriend - after having been known around campus for her polyamory, the notion of her settling down may have inspired a "yeah, right!" reaction.

This is similar to my take as well, though the way I see it is actually a little bit meaner, and at Tai's expense: not only has she been known around campus, it's probably also a not-well-kept-secret that she was looking for something a little more attached and not finding it.

From that perspective, I'd find it reasonable to believe Allie's smirk is meant to be a knowing one with Dora, along the lines of, "Oh, you're the new one leading her on." Or, perhaps more charitably, "You're the one she's pining for this month?"

It could just be an insecurity issue, but...well, I suppose it's just arbitrary judgment on my part, but I think if that were the case Dora wouldn't have waited for Allie to leave to talk about it. She'd have blown up on the spot, in her face. Just guessing from past experiences; I suppose her counseling could've improved her impulse control in that regard.

No "u", even in England.  The OED doesn't recognise that form, and derives the word "polyamory" directly from the Latin "amor", not the French "amour".

Would you write "amourous" for "amorous"?  Well, then...

Well, no.  The word is not quite that restricted; for one thing, it is used in reference to animals, who presumably do not marry.

A: "How've you been?"
B: "Good, good. This is my girlfriend Dora."
A: "Well, see you around."

Allie expects to see Tai "around", cause she's a girl that really gets around. You don't need to be paranoid like Dora to take it that way.

And that was my delurking post. Let's see if I will post another some day. Hi!

You can interpret Dora's response as the start of her usual relationship destroying jealousy, testing Tai's response looking for something wrong with the reply... I don't like where this might be going if that is the case.

polygyny
Doesn't polygyny specifically refer to marriage?
Poly = Many...

-andry: men
-gyny: women
-gamy: marriage
-amory: love/sex

just to clear it up. Both polygyny and polyamory could apply to Tai, one's just more specific than the other.

The dictionary definitions of polygyny and polyandry do refer specifically to marriage, tho.  A fair number of words mean something more specific than the sum of their parts.... Like homo = same, phobia = fear, and to literally get "fear of same-sex bangin'" the word would have to be homosexualphobia except that someone wisely decided not to pile up suffixes like that...  although polygamygyny would be a pretty fun word to say.

Is polyandrooligogynogamy better than polygynooligoandrogamy?

No...and I'm pretty sure you can merge the double o into a single o.

Scanners live in vain?

Ha, I wasn't the only one who thought of that! You clearly have excellent taste in science fiction.

You mean there is at LEAST ONE OTHER PERSON who knows of these works?

Fantastic.

As do you.

More than one.

Goodness, I had no idea there were this many Cordwainer Smith fans still around!  8-)

Thanks for the link, Zoe. Sounds like a story I want to read :-)
Yes you do. Along with "A Planet named Shayol". "The Game of Rat and Dragon". "The Ballad of Lost C'Mell". "Norstrilia".

Sounds like you have the same "Best of Cordwainer Smith" paperback collection that I do.

Buy them in hard copy or e-book form though. Anything by Cordwainer Smith. You'll thank me.

I completely agree.

Some of his works were written in "the shadow of Black Mountain", at the ANU where I teach.

Cool!

I have two volumes of Cordwainer Smith, The Rediscovery of Man and Norstrilia. According to Wikipedia, these contain all of his science fiction. I also have several unrelated collections of the best of science fiction containing Scaners Live in Vain.
