Title: Recettear
Post by: LeeC on 19 Nov 2013, 12:58
So I was watching extra credit's "games you might have missed" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=-5RPMcqCiEc#t=135) and came across this around 2:15 in the video.  Its an RPG about running a shop in an RPG.  Its called Recettear.  has anyone tried this?  I may load up the demo when I get home today.  I am not much of a JRPG kind of guy but the idea of being a shop owner in an action RPG sound intriguing.

The Demo on steam.

Also apparently what you do in the demo would transfer to the actual $20 game if you decide to buy it according to EC's video.

My buddy played it a feth ton. He says it's brutally difficult and strangely addicting.

I played the demo a couple of years ago. You end up living in a cardboard box if you don't keep up the payments on the loan that you're forced into at the start.

I own it.

It's cute, and fun. A little wonky, and has some replay value if you want after you've beaten the game.

You divide your time between managing the shop (buying things to sell to the populace, arranging them based on some simple market data, haggling) and going out for vaguely top-down action dungeoneering to get cooler stuff to sell.

The gameplay itself is decent (if a little repetitive at times), and the art direction and characterization are cute and engaging in that cuteness. You'll probably recognize a few cute and/or magical girl anime tropes as you go along. Oh, and losing isn't that big a deal; it's a hard game at times, but it doesn't punish you as severely as it could.
