Pretty sure not, actually. Or, rather, she's taking action based on a set of assumptions roughly parallel to Marigold's but definitely not identical.

I see Mari's "Hannelore!" as a plea for her to rescind her comment whereas it seems to me that Hanners is hearing "what are you still doing here‽" and leaving to give Mari the (hypothetically) requested alone time with Dale.

Chicken in the roaster? Interesting flavor to the coffee the next couple weeks.
Me, I'm put in mind of one of Bill Mauldin's WW2 cartoons showing Willie and Joe hunched over a makeshift stove in a dugout. Joe's about to heat up a couple K-ration cans by boiling them when Willie cautions him: "Drop them cans in the coffee gentle, Joe. We got a chicken stewin' in the bottom."

I dunno… depending on the volume Dora roasts at any given time, the coffee roaster of doom could well be big enough to hold a chicken… getting it in there might be an issue, and I've no idea what that would do to either the chicken, the roaster, or the next batch of beans, however.

Nah, this is just Hanners being an utterly useless liar. She's lucky it got as close to making sense as it did, and she didn't end up saying she had to go check on whether their mongoose's eggs had flown up the wall by next Thursday!

I think it's been well established by now that Marigold's social skills range somewhere between that of a painfully shy person and someone who's very autistic - and leaning more towards the "very autistic" side of that spectrum. Good thing's Dale's used to it (or is equally oblivious himself).

Considering the roaster resides in the Spider Zone, somewhere Hannelore would never willingly go, that makes her excuse even worse.

Um yes, that is how it works here. Although actually to be truthful I suppose in my current degree that's not how it works. I do have a module exam next month, come to think of it. In my law degree, though, I did the same four or five subjects all year and took the exams in late May and early June. That's how the British education system works, except for the option to take a few A-level (16-18 year old) modules in January if you wish.

Wasn't Faye showing Dale how to use the roaster a few comics back? Though much earlier in the comic Faye also said there was a super secret method that even she didn't know about. But I guess dora could have changed the process so others could do it, saving her the work. Or maybe the secret process is something else altogether!

I haven't voted the poll yet but I'm gonna be hoping for Dale and Marigold or Emily gets a Woodrow.

Wait, you only have one set of finals per year? Wouldn't that mean you take the same classes all year? That sounds awful.

Things may have changed a bit now; but when I was at uni, at Oxford, finals were the single set of exams at the end of the three years.  We were tested on everything we had learnt at that point.  Actually, there were also public exams ("moderations") at the end of the first year, but in most subjects these didn't count in the final degree - though they might get mentioned (a "double first" means a first in both mods and greats, where "greats" is the finals exam in classics).  In sciences, practical work through the course was also assessed and fed into finals as a "paper" in its own right.

Colleges also hold exams a couple of times a year, known as "collections", which are used by tutors to keep tabs on your progress, and for disciplinary purposes in extremis.  But at Oxford, colleges are separate bodies from the university.

Yes, yes, and perfectly normal in Australia.

Yeah... I think the "We all new this was coming" thing should have been relegated to the strip title or something.

Panel 1: Dale gets a customer.
Panel 2: Marigold and Dale pause making out, Dale takes the customer's order.
Panel 3: Dale gives the customer their order.
Panel 4: Marigold and Dale resume making out.
:D

Is to too much to assume these two are gonna bang, then?
I'm pretty sure they just did.

Foreheads, that is.

Tomorrow's comic:
Panel 1: Dale gets a customer.
Panel 2: Marigold and Dale pause making out, Dale takes the customer's order.
Panel 3: Dale gives the customer their order.
Panel 4: Marigold and Dale resume making out.
:D

I posit an alternative:
Panel 1: Close shot, Dale eating cereal.
Panel 2: Angus walks in.
Panel 3: Wider shot to reveal Dale eating cereal in Marigold and Angus' apartment. Dale and Angus have serious eye contact going on.
Panel 4: Dale and Angus eating cereal.

I don't know, to me this seems a bit artificial. But then I would have absolutely no idea how to write a more natural makeout scene for Dale and Marigold.
I still really genuinely hope they do get together properly and live happily ever after, though. I like Dale and Marigold - especially together.

The moving text... Ah well... Not really necessary, I guess.

No, Hanners' shipping charts are actual shipping charts. e.g., 1 day to New York, 2 to Chicago, 3 to Dallas, and so on, for how long it takes two people in a crate to be sent to various locations.

Why are people upset about the moving text? Would it be better if it were static? It's not like it ruins the comic, it's just a bit of breaking the fourth wall. And, we DID all see this coming.

I was not expecting Marigold to be so...bold. Aggressive, even. Especially while sober.

Marigold has experience (http://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=2161) at this. As far as we know, Dale doesn't. If it was going to happen, Marigold had to be the one to take the initiative.

I figure the TEXTTEXTTEXT is also part of how Jephzibah handles such things. Dunno if you've noticed or if I'm thinking too hard about it, but most of the time he inserts humor into romance/intimacy. Partially has to be just because it's *common* to find that in the wild, but I can't help but wonder if it's a bit of a defusing mechanism for a man who is...invested(?) in the ways he is? That doesn't seem quite the right word. Anyway, he cares about this stuff, it's obvious he cares about this stuff (or he wouldn't have gotten so pissed at this forum back in the day), and it's okay that he does. I wonder though.

Note: I might be projecting a bit too much.

I'm not sure that I'd count this as breaking the fourth wall in any case.  The text doesn't come from the characters, and is not in any way within the universe of the comic.  It is a comment such as Jeph might have written below, but on this occasion has placed over the comic for added impact (and animation).

Why are people upset about the moving text? Would it be better if it were static? It's not like it ruins the comic, it's just a bit of breaking the fourth wall. And, we DID all see this coming.

Idk seems like an odd thing to pick at, considering it's a cartoon.

Because some people don't have enough real problems to be upset about.

HEY!! Do I make snide comments about what you complain about??

So, how long has it been since we've seen Winslow?

He was in the poster (http://questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=2537) of characters strip (2537).
If you don't count that, he was in the QC forum's guest strip (http://questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=2316) (2316).
If you don't count that either, he was wearing a little hat (http://questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=2189) (2189).

Last time he says anything is the strip before...the last time he had anything relating to a storyline was the Roomba jokes back over three years ago.

It'll probably be fine, but as most of us I would think would know, emotions and makeouts are....powerful, intense things. Especially when combined like this.

It's not exactly surprising that a person with such obvious avoidant tendencies would want to retreat and process a bit. Also probably freak out a bit, but hey.

Yeah I was wondering how long it would take for Marigold to freak out - as de_la_Nae says, powerful emotions were invoked which she is not experienced enough to handle. She would need to retreat and process for awhile. The problem is, the way she is, she'll probably avoid Dale for a week or longer before Momo and Hannelore have to use the threat of force to get her to talk to him again.

Dale couldn't close because he's not a manager.

I work at a Justice. At our store, either Alexis (chief manager) or Shannon/Nadia (asst. mgr.) has to be there to close.  At the end of the day, money has to be counted, so the manager has to sign off on it. I assume it's the same for Coffee of Doom, so either Dora (manager) or Faye (asst. mgr.) has to be there to count the money at the end of the day.

I think it's just that Dale is new. When I worked in the service industry it was a few weeks before I was allowed to close by myself, due to money being involved (like the other guy said). Granted, we still don't know how long it's been since he started, but it's one of the more recent events to happen in the comic so I doubt it's been a while.

Marigold reminds me of a friend's cat, adopted from the wild. I gradually made friends with it, but after brushing against me for a few seconds it would suddenly realize what it was doing and flee in terror.

Marigold has doubtless missed a lot of the usual growing-up activities since she was ten years old.

OK, you can have that one. The "crass statement" declaration was most likely because of your previous remark without giving your backing evidence.

But consider, Marigold is pretty ready (http://questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=2161) to handle that sort of situation, but her self-confidence (and notable lack thereof) will push her away from her happiness. Consider also that both of them are horribly awkward around each other. If Hanners hadn't forced (well, not so much "forced" as "checkmated" (like in chess)) the situation, what would Marbear do?

By giving these two some alone time, both Dale and Marigold were able to break through their awkwardness long enough, and... well, you know.

Having made out before doesn't necessarily means she is ready for the situation she is in. I think running away proves that.
I thought it was odd her SpaceBoyFling hadn't been brought up since they left space but maybe it's because she is ready for the physical act but not having to follow up emotionally with the other person.

Having worked at fairly small establishments, where having a manager close out is not always possible[1], having a trusted minion deal with the money at the end of shift is certainly a possibility.  And Hanners is certainly one employee who can be trusted to have an accurate count of the money (hell, if she's good enough to audit for her mother, I think she could handle the daily count for CoD)

[1] Hell, at one former job, those of us at "the small store" were completely unsupervised, with no difference in title/duty.  The only difference was how many merit or seniority-based raises any given employee had.

I feel like I'm repeating myself here, but I think it bears mentioning: people like Marigold rarely 'heal' enough to not run away from situations like this without actually going through times that they run away. Maybe I'm projecting a little too much, but we have a very strong alarm sense that we have to face down, and sometimes we have to step away a bit to quiet it.

This is a Marigold victory. No drugs, in public, for a few important minutes no fear. The fear comes back, and will probably never fully go away, but it can become more manageable.

Don't ever expect her to be anything like Dora or Tai or even Faye. She'll probably run away a few more times. But it also probably doesn't mean the same thing to her that it would to other characters.

That's my super-self-projecting theory at any rate.

I feel like with that last panel she had shown her intention of seeing him again soon. I agree that she needed a bit to just process what just happened due to inexperience with feels, but she doesn't seem entirely uncomfortable with pursuing whatever is about to happen. Or maybe the next page is going to blow my theory to smithereens. Who knows.

With her anxiety and urge to flee it is to me, that way there is nobody to influence either of them and whatever happens is based on their own chemistry, fears, etc.

If that isn't the idea of a date then tie them both to chairs and force them to have a nice dinner and actually talk. Nobody flees, nobody disturbs them, nobody influences them either way. Just force them to face whatever is simmering between them one way or another.

Come on, girl.

I just thought of something...

What if next week space dude comes to visit and creates teh dramaz? Although this arc probably has enough dramaz as is.

I hope they take it slowly. Do some growing up together. Then will I SQUEE.
Any resemblance between myself and Momo is purely coincidental. Really.
*SIGH* Who am I kidding?

You could make money on the side renting out the use of your social protocol database.

So, time for the awkward setting up of their second date

Or more drama?

Fool!  Your translations can never hope to capture the true spirit of the original:  ¿Por qué no los dos?

The relevance of that image to the text (or to anything, really).

So it  wasn't just me? I thought there was another pop culture reference that everyone else knew that was flying over my head.

Ah, right.  Just remember that the readership of this forum is world-wide, and many such references are local to one country (and that some people have no interest in commercials either!).  That's OK, but sometimes there will be puzzlement over something you might feel is obvious - so explanations will be requested (as with the Portishead one as well, of course!).

I probably wouldn't get a reference even to an advert which plays in the UK, since the only time I see ads is if I'm watching something on ITV player without an ad blocker (sometimes it functions, sometimes it doesn't).

Which reminds me, there were some UK adverts playing on the TV at the bakery the other day.

You guys have weird adverts.

In particular, your advert for Pokémon X and Y sucks :P

The girl is an Internet meme (http://knowyourmeme.com/memes/why-not-both-why-dont-we-have-both), though.

jesus, can Marigold kiss someone without having to run away?

First, Angus.
Second, space dude.
Now, Dale.

Come on, girl.

I thought the same thing. But I suspect it won't happen, since that would be too much of a coincidence.

Francis the Space Dude shows up. He tries to call down laser wrath on Dale, but May hacks into the station's laser control software. Stalemate.

Marigold enters a convent.

Faye moves in with Angus full-time. Marten, unable to afford the rent on Dwight Street, moves into Marigold's room. No one thinks this is at all unusual.

Interesting, thanks for the link! Of course, there are 20 gazillion internet memes by now, so nobody can keep up with them all.

Nobody with a life, anyway...  8-)
