Title: My glorious name.
Post by: Thrillho on 10 Dec 2013, 14:11
So Inspector Method (Of Madness) was asking me about my name, given that some folks on here call me Gaz.

It has made me realise that I have no idea how neko and Pat, two of precious few people (and especially Americans) who call me Gaz, would pronounce 'Gaz.'

So my challenge to you, forum, is to post an audio or video of you saying my sexy, chocolatey name.

Because my internet sucks too many dicks to let me do Skype or Mumble.

I made a new soundcloud account for this purpose!

Username: saygaz

Everyone use it! :D

You have to confirm the email!

EDIT: oh you can add more emails to confirm with! I'll do that then!

The login for [email protected] is the password for the soundcloud pluss gaz' birth year (two last digits). If I figured out his birth year correctly. Please use it to spam the world

Yes. Gath. Could just be my exposure to Spaniards, though. They typically pronounce "Z" as "Th."

Gazed?
Title: Re: My glorious name.
Post by: pwhodges on 14 Dec 2013, 01:33
Spoken as a letter, in Britain Z is called "zed", not "zee".  Not that we'd say that as part of a word, any more than we'd use "double-you" that way!

Rhymes with "razz."
So...basically like most of us, then.
Maybe people should try to pronounce my name. Real name.
I try four different possibilities! My real guess is the first one, but chances are none of them are right. https://soundcloud.com/saygaz/method-attempting-neko

Title: Re: My glorious name.
Post by: ChaoSera on 18 Dec 2013, 00:47
Most English speaking people probably won't be able to pronounce my last name correctly, but since testing that would require giving up my last name, we'll never know. Although neko knows it, I think.

If you told me your last name I do not remember it! So your secret is effectively safe with me.

Also I will listen to the other attempts soon but I can tell you all that there is no Z or Th sound in my name.

Edit: I mean Sh not Th!
Title: Re: My glorious name.
Post by: nekowafer on 18 Dec 2013, 07:48
Yep you got it wrong too :P I'll record the correct pronunciation when I get a moment alone. It would be weird if my coworkers heard me saying my own name into my phone.

That's what I would have guessed - it matches (apart from the earlier vowels) the way my friend Alisia's name is said.

Pretty sure I told you on skype, when we were chatting about the pronunciation of names. Also I just learned that "pronunciation" is spelled without the o before the u, as in pronounce. That seems kinda weird to me..
Title: Re: My glorious name.
Post by: pwhodges on 19 Dec 2013, 03:39
It's actually closer to the French and Latin roots - the o is an interpolation.

No I think I openly still had you labeled as "Neko" >.>; I have used/heard the name before in other contexts though.
Title: Re: My glorious name.
Post by: nekowafer on 21 Dec 2013, 07:07
I am used to going by a nickname, just because of how difficult my real name is, so it could go either way. Often I'm Neko or Kat. MUCH easier than Elesia.
Title: Re: My glorious name.

Maybe I just read too many fantasy novels growing up, but it's not that much of a mouthful is it?
Title: Re: My glorious name.
Post by: nekowafer on 21 Dec 2013, 09:28
I've always been into fantasy novels and it's my name so I don't know that I'm the best to ask, but no, I don't think so. But more than half the people that have ever had to pronounce my name more than a couple times get it wrong every time. My 4th grade teacher just never got it right, for example. Same with my coworker - who I've been working with for over 5 years.

Honestly, now that I've heard it, it's not hard at all. It's just not immediately apparent from seeing it spelled out.
Title: Re: My glorious name.
Post by: nekowafer on 21 Dec 2013, 14:12
I'm not sure why that is, though. It's pronounced exactly as it's spelled, I think. Ell-ee-see-uh
Title: Re: My glorious name.

Because the s in "sia" is usually not pronounced like an s.

It isn't? Do you have examples?
Title: Re: My glorious name.
Post by: Method of Madness on 21 Dec 2013, 21:36
Most words I can think of have a zh like Asia or a z like enthusiasm.
Title: Re: My glorious name.
Post by: nekowafer on 22 Dec 2013, 10:00
You're right - I hadn't thought of those. But most people don't pronounce it with a Z sound. Usually it's an Sh sound, which I can't figure out.
Title: Re: My glorious name.
Post by: pwhodges on 22 Dec 2013, 10:51
Actually, I say -sh- in Asia rather than -zh-, so it doesn't surprise me.
Title: Re: My glorious name.
Post by: lepetitfromage on 22 Dec 2013, 12:47
Wee, I would have gotten both right! But I pronounce "Neko" wrong. Like "Nee-ko". The right way to say it feels like it should be spelled "Necco", like the candy :-P
Title: Re: My glorious name.
Post by: nekowafer on 22 Dec 2013, 14:03
Well that's where my name comes from of course... necco wafers. Only neko is Japanese for cat. So, I am cat wafer. Delicious cat wafer.

It appears I failed at uploading mine or something. But yeah, rhymes with jazz but with a hard g.
Did he (or she, but I seem to recall Gaz uses male pronouns) ever clarify on the correct pronunciation?
My first guess for Elesia was right, but looking at the spelling I thought it might be a Latin name, Eh-lay-see-a.
And my brain automatically often glosses over -sia and -tia so for example I pronounce the Khajiit protagonist in Prequel, Katia, as "Catty a" in my head but I read it out loud like "Kay shuh." Which I guess might be just slurring words or an accent or something.
