When we had more fun?
When people didn't argue as much?
...When we weren't so serious?
Feel like we're Heath Ledger's Joker over here.
Pepperidge Farm remembers.
-
Wasn't that like, 2009?
-
We can just light the discuss sub forum on fire, then we can roast marshallows!
-
Ooh, smores!
-
I think I left before that time
-
I don't think it's too bad now. On the other hand, I probably joined after the "fun" times, and I try to avoid the Discuss forum.
-
Up high, Ankh! So did I!
-
I think I might have been briefly part of the fun times but yeah, there's definitely some non-productive things I could say about some stuff.
-
Pass the beer, Masterpiece.
-
Shush you this is pre drinking euphoric masterpiece. Or "Euphoriyan", if you will.
-
I was kidding about things being better before. It was wretched on here in the old days. This place is a family to me now. I was just making a dumb thread cause it's been too long since we had a fun dumb thread.
-
"Euphoriyan"
Love it
-
I miss some people.

This dumb thread got this stuck in my head:
-
That was literally the exact thing I had in mind when I started the thread ARE YOU A GODDAMN SORCERER?
-
I don't remember that thread. And now I'm sad because maybe, just maybe, someone would walk up to me and say, "Yer a wizard, Lindsey."
-

I hated some of the previous regulars.
-
I love those people and I'm glad I talk to them every day still. Especially after we kicked out and banned the only awful person there (*cough* tommydski *cough*).

Me also.

KharBevNor took an instant dislike to me for no reason - or at least no reason he ever explained - and was never less than a prick to me. Tommy was also fucking awful. I remember no-one else's names.
-
Ahhh memories.
-
Aww that's a shame, I love Khar. Although he's not really been around for a couple years. Facebook says he got engaged recently, so yay! Sorry this wine is getting to my head. Khar can seem brutal, but he's a teddy bear, I met up with him once and he spilled mead down his beard and then ate a garland of plastic birthday decoration, it was wonderful.
-
I remember no-one else's names.
Not even Dovey, or Lunchbox?
Possibly you may not associate Jens (Kris's brother), currently Jeans here though a somewhat rare visitor, with the name he had before which was Anyways.
Khar is the only member whose post count I have not yet overtaken - and I'm pretty close to it now.
-
I know one person who'd have to leave and then the forums would be great!
-
Well fuck you too
<3<3<3<3<3<3<3
-
Well aren't you guys a merry bunch for a lovely Saturday night.
-
I am merry!! But I also finished that bottle of wine and now i'm howling along to REM, so I am probably not a good representative of this thread... or any thread.
-
Kanpai!
*drinks another beer*
-
Yeah, well, I've got a homebrew caramel apple cider that tastes like pie to drink. I may have it with ice cream because it seriously tastes like some motherfraking PIE.
-
S...say that again, but slowly.

Before my time it seems. BUT I REMEMBER ALL THE SAME.

I remember a few threads of virginal, vegetarian whining. Being a virgin and/or vegetarian is great! Just don't tell the internet we're not supposed to eat meat and that everybody hates you.
-
If I ever try cannibalism I'm going to eat a vegetarian just to prove a point.
-
Makes sense. After all, the best cattle is grass-fed, isn't it?
-
I remember a few threads of virginal, vegetarian whining.
Dozens. All started or hijacked by the same user.
And you know how the community got it to stop? Not by constantly saying "We respect your opinion forever, because everyone is entitled to say whatever they want as long as they are not rude and even though you are ruining this community and making people not want to engage here, you've managed to never swear at anyone so you get to stay."
We stopped it by being mean. Because if you keep inviting self-centered assholes in with open arms, you end up with your arms full of self-centered assholes.
Just saying.
-
Actually I think we stopped it by banning the user.
-
Actually I think we stopped it by banning the user.
You don't think there was a turn in the community's attitude towards her before that? She was temp banned and then perma-banned and I seem to recall them both happening in response to her losing her temper when people were mean to her. I know for my part, I spent a full day following every single one of her posts with "Have you called a therapist yet?"
That was kind of mean, but there was nothing more to be done. I expect if I did something similar now I would be punished for being mean and she would be forgiven because I baited her.
-
My point wasn't that people weren't mean to her, it was that it didn't work. In the end we gave up and banned her because she was harming the forum. Other people have been banned for the same reason. There are members who have been chastised for their behaviour but not banned because they contribute positively at other times - the ones who never contribute positively don't stick around.
-
I think the good old days were 2004 or so. Back when this place was Digifox ex-pats.
Just saying.
-
Posting in this forum is a voluntary activity. No one is required to come here if they don't enjoy it.
-
Digifox?
-
I think the good old days were 2004 or so.
Says a user who registered in 2009? Did you have an earlier persona, then?
[EDIT] I found your post about that.
-

I'm also trolling, mildly. The concept of "good old days" be in on the forum or IRL is fairly laughable. Generally speaking, it's selective memory at work. We highlight the good and minimize the bad (unless it was truly a bad situation, I suppose.)
-

So if there were a user who, without directly violating the rules of the forum, posted disproportionately, and was the loudest voice in a ridiculous number of threads, and regularly made other people uncomfortable, and whose posting changed the character of the forum so that regular users were uncomfortable here and kept leaving... I am to believe that the mods would be on top of that and would find a way to restore balance? At that at no point it could come to people being mean?
-
Being mean is never the answer.
-
We're all shiny happy people here.
And Papersatan is constantly reminding me why I took my last break from the forums. Edit: That was worded horribly and I wanted to make it clear I didn't mean to say Papersatan makes me wanna leave, just what she's describing in this thread right now reminds me of why I left.
-
That's hardly fair, she doesn't post much. Also that's a great follow up to the post above you
-
And Papersatan is constantly reminding me why I took my last break from the forums.
Care to expand on that thought?
-
Doing my best to derail because, god knows, nothing good can come of this.
-
I like to think Hodges, IICIH, May, Loki, etc can run off trouble without the community forming up the electronic equivalent of a lynchmob. We're all theoretically adults or close to it around here and while we have some very passionate people on these boards and we do occasionally get a bit heated we're still pleasant to each other. Even Snalin and I can talk pleasantly and agree on things outside of certain topics in discuss where we attempt to verbally stab each other to death. I've even agreed with Beo before and I thought the sun would go cold before that happened :P
The topics we do tend to get heated on can be pretty damn personal to us as individuals, either via personal experience or the experiences of a close friend, or something fundamental to how we process, learn and understand about the world around us. These vastly different viewpoints do not reconcile easily, and it's natural you're going to see sparks and friction, it's the sign of a diverse and healthy community.

We're all human. I'm not going to pretend I'm morally superior and have never been mean to someone or that others can't be mean, because we all have buttons. With that poster, I think I trolled her by posting memes after every post in a certain thread of rolling eye gifs because I was at my wits end with her and wanted her to stop trolling all of us. (She may have been in need of professional help, but she was also a troll.) Was that mature? No. But I was uncomfortable and it restored some type of power level balance for me as a poster. Someone had invaded my home and was making it unpleasant and the only solution I could find at the time was to make it equally unpleasant for her, which many others did as well.
If that were to happen again, at no point could people become mean? No. I know we encourage good behavior, but people are emotional creatures and it's ridiculous to think that no one, out of all of this people on the board, will become mean. Our job, the moderators, is to try to stop a situation from getting too bad, but sometimes we get there too late or in some instances only make it worse and then we have to stop and clean up the mess. Personally I would never like to see people leave because of one or a few asshats ruining things for the majority, but I don't think that's going to happen.
-
I think the issue now is there are still people that other people would consider asshats, they're just not as consistently obtuse as that particular member. Also that was one single member in a pool of old-timers who all mostly agreed they had a problem with that member.
-
I can't speak for all the mods, but I have received very few complaints about members via PM and I see all of the reported posts. That could be because I'm newer to being a mod and people trust more of the others to PM or because people just aren't approaching a mod when there's an issue. I don't know. I think back when she was around, it was just Paul and maybe IICIH? and Method, I don't remember.
-
This thread started off as a light hearted joke and has ended up becoming an example of what I wasn't even actually talking about.
-
I can't imagine you're surprised.
-
Surprised? No.
Fucking disappointed? Yes. In all of us.
If you need me I'll be in the pointless thread, wanking and crying.
-
I know, let's leave it at that and return to the present.
