Title: Patreon and QC

It's cool that Jeph is looking to expand his QC Empire. But what do you guys think? I also wonder what new comic strip this might be (Deathmole strips, possibly?).

My bet is something not related to the QC-niverse. Maybe Harriet will get her own strip?

May spin-off?

Nah, probably not.

Except Sweet Harrietits is part of the QC-verse, we've seen her in the background at least once.

Once my current financial mess is dealt with, I'm certainly going to throw in some money.  When I let all adverts through (so that Jeph could get paid), I kept having some try and download shit to my computer (I'm on Linux suckers, it won't work).  I still closed the tab quickly and installed an adblocker.  Now I can safely let everything *but* the giggle stuff through, but as that's one of the artist's main revenue streams, Patreon will be a good way to pay for my enjoyment.

In response to one of the June Q&A questions, the new comic won't be associated with QC. So it's anyones guess, unless there is a psychic here.

Is there a psychic here? :D

I don't get the Q&A :( It would probably be wrong to post it here though.

It's not anyone's place to really, except Jeph.

I knew you were going to ask that.
I knew you were going to respond with that.
Title: Re: Patreon and QC
Post by: Method of Madness on 06 Jun 2014, 05:35
Which is why it would be wrong. I can't exactly spare $120 a year for a Q&A though.
Title: Re: Patreon and QC
Post by: Mlle Germain on 06 Jun 2014, 07:08
Do you think Jeph will from now on only do Q&As for the people who pay at least 10 bucks a month? Or will he continue the normal ones on this tumblr as well? I would be sad, because I like reading them, but of course I wouldn't blame him. You can't expect everything for free.

From the description of the next Patreon stretch goal ($10,000/month):

Quote from: http://www.patreon.com/jephjacques
How about an extra QC strip every month, starring a character that backers get to vote for. That sounds pretty good to me. Let's go with that. Yeah. This is your chance to find out what REALLY happened to Sarah.

Waitwaitwait... You mean she WASN'T eaten by an allosaurus?!?  Jeph... lied to us???! :-o  :-o

Next, he's going to tell us there is no spoon, the cake is a lie, and Hannelore is really an internet fetish porn star.

Post by: Method of Madness on 06 Jun 2014, 13:19
It was never said in the comic, so no, she wasn't

Post by: jwhouk on 06 Jun 2014, 18:06
It was suggested she "doesn't like allosaurs" in one of Raven's chalkboard drawings. (http://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=325) Nothing was ever said about it.

She's just been VERY elusive for the last 2,500-odd strips.
Title: Re: Patreon and QC
Post by: Rghfrgl on 06 Jun 2014, 23:22
Bit worried he'll be overworking himself with this honestly. A lot of cartoonists do multiple strips, but QC does update 5 days a week with, as a general rule, no buffer. You'd probably want to bring QC down to the standard 3 updates a week to start a new strip, but I don't think he's in a good position to do that since it's funded by qc fans.
Title: Re: Patreon and QC
Post by: KOK on 06 Jun 2014, 23:26
I don't see how the money from Patreon is going to help Jeph produce another comic. It is not as if he has a day job he can quit.

He has not, as far I as have seen, specified the frequency of the new comic, BTW.
Title: Re: Patreon and QC
Post by: techkid on 07 Jun 2014, 02:09
Yeah... true. I mean, it's good for Jeph to be self-sufficient, and $5,815.51 per month (at the time of writing) is pretty decent pay, but pushing yourself that hard isn't worth it. I don't want him to be discouraged, but I don't want him to burn himself out, either.

I'm guessing the new strip is still in the ideas stage, myself.

It was suggested she "doesn't like allosaurs" in one of Raven's chalkboard drawings. (http://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=325) Nothing was ever said about it.
But it says so on the cast page.

I believe in Jeph's ability to judge his own abilities and to manage the money well.

Post by: KOK on 07 Jun 2014, 03:04
That he has managed to make a living from QC for so long does give one confidence.
Title: Re: Patreon and QC
Post by: pwhodges on 07 Jun 2014, 04:55
I see the potential for problems when there is some QC content or information that is public and some (as in bonus strips or Q&A sessions) that is paid for.  In particular, this could create difficult tensions within this forum.
Title: Re: Patreon and QC
Post by: techkid on 07 Jun 2014, 06:05
From what it reads, the new comic and bonus QC strip will be available to all, but the QC strip gets to have its cast voted on by Patreon subscribers. Anything that gets submitted will still be free for all.

But I do agree with your stance, pwhodges. If there is anything that will create a rift between forum-goers, then it needs to be controlled, but from how it stands at the moment, it's more like a subscription to his Tumblr page.

Oh, that actually sounds decent. I admit I had some of the same worries as Paul, but if someone who pays money a slight edge on decision power, I am perfectly happy with that :)

I myself (having flattered Jeph for a year now) am a bit surprised that Jeph is now asking for money on Patreon as well. Are we supposed to be discouraged from using Flattr? Cause that's the vibe I am getting.
Title: Re: Patreon and QC
Post by: KOK on 07 Jun 2014, 11:06
There is flatr for single donations and patreon for monthly payments.
Title: Re: Patreon and QC
Post by: Method of Madness on 07 Jun 2014, 12:10
Wait, that's what flatr is?
Title: Re: Patreon and QC
Post by: Masterpiece on 08 Jun 2014, 02:33
You can set Flattr up to do monthly donations too.
Title: Re: Patreon and QC
Post by: Method of Madness on 08 Jun 2014, 03:25
I mean I didn't even know it was a donation thing. I just know the link was next to the forum link, not what it was.
Title: Re: Patreon and QC
Post by: KOK on 08 Jun 2014, 08:17
Not the most effective way to solicit donations, then.
Title: Re: Patreon and QC
Post by: Method of Madness on 08 Jun 2014, 09:58
Well I'm now donating via Patreon, so I guess that's better. Also I just hovered over "Flattr" and apparently it's a social network as well, "show that you support creators".
Title: Re: Patreon and QC
Post by: Masterpiece on 08 Jun 2014, 15:09
"...by giving them donations". It's just the same thing with a different name and without the benefits, so we are somewhat getting screwed over.
Title: Re: Patreon and QC
Post by: Method of Madness on 08 Jun 2014, 15:43
Then switch to Patreon.
Title: Re: Patreon and QC
Post by: Masterpiece on 08 Jun 2014, 17:06
It's not that easy. You have to deposit money to your Flattr account upfront which is then distributed monthly. I'm subscribed to paying Jeph 10 Euros per Month for another ten months and am getting literally zero value in return whereas Patreon customers are happily enjoying the benefits of never having used Flattr in the first place.
Title: Re: Patreon and QC
Post by: Method of Madness on 08 Jun 2014, 17:08
Oh wow. That's really generous. There's no way you can get that money back?

I'll have to check, but as far as I remember there isn't.
Title: Re: Patreon and QC
Post by: Method of Madness on 08 Jun 2014, 17:21
Shit. Maybe you can find a way to get access to that tier on Patreon by using your Flattr donations?

You could always cancel your account, which is doable (see the FAQ page).

Title: Re: Patreon and QC
Post by: techkid on 10 Jun 2014, 04:21
That's pretty harsh! At most, refund the money. At least, donate the remaining amount to your sponsors.
Title: Re: Patreon and QC
Post by: Barmymoo on 10 Jun 2014, 09:36
I'd suggest contacting Jeph and telling him the situation, as I imagine he'll be fairly understanding of the fact that you can't really afford to double your donations.
Title: Re: Patreon and QC
Post by: Mlle Germain on 10 Jun 2014, 15:26
Yeah, that is really shitty, Masterpiece! I am sure if you tell Jeph about it, he will try to reward you somehow for having supported him so long already. It seems very unfair that people who have donated far longer via another source don't get anything just because they started giving back earlier.

Also, this Flattr thing seems to have a really shitty policy and this seems quite shady to me - if you've already paid, why can't they just give all the money to Jeph immediately instead of keeping it for themselves upon cancellation?
Title: Re: Patreon and QC
Post by: Masterpiece on 11 Jun 2014, 09:25
Oh I'm definitely NOT going to go and whine to Jephzibah about this. He's having a blast with his Patreon. I don't want to take the steam outta that.

As for Flattr, I am able to just donate everything on my flattr account to Jephs account, but that would increase my monthly donation TENFOLD. I don't have the funds for that.
Title: Re: Patreon and QC
Post by: Method of Madness on 11 Jun 2014, 13:18
Wait, if the money's going to him anyway, and is already out of your hands, why not just have it send it all to him and then delete your account? Then, whenever you can afford it, start a Patreon account (hell, you can start sooner with a smaller donation and then up it as you wish/can afford to).

Resurrecting this thread to point out that Jeph just hit $10k in his monthly Patreon support.

That means... an extra QC strip every month, chosen by Patreon supporters.  :-o

I'm kinda torn since I think his comics would be better if he wasn't overworked. But a milestone's a milestone. You don't maintain a milestone on a monthly basis. You hit it or you don't. And he hit it.

Here's the link (https://www.patreon.com/creation?hid=2542644) to the comic. (It only works if you're logged into patreon and a patron so I think it's ok to share here)

That being said, since it's not on the main site or accessible to everyone, I'm not sure how to treat it canonically. Since it doesn't really affect anything in the comic itself, I guess that question doesn't matter much.

Yes, what about it? They haven't mentioned Sara in years, so her name doesn't affect anything that's happening now. And since this was separate from the site itself and not in the archive, the canon issue is still there, even involving her name.
