And another week gone, and another week gone, another week bites the dust...
-
EMILY!!!! NOOOOOO!!!!!!
She's rather blaise for being bitten by a snake. Is the lady afraid of anything?
-
So it WAS Emily. Interesting.
Let the WEIRDNESS begin!!
-
Of course it was Emily. Duh.
Seriously, the amount of speculation on last week's comic as to whether or not that was her was just a wee bit ridiculous.
I would pay money to see someone make Metal Gear Emily. It's either the best or worst idea ever.
-
Emily why
(Wait, people seriously thought it wasn't Emily? How?)
-
Because her hair was slightly different. Or something. Fuck, idk. I pretty much skimmed through the thread from last week.
-
I was mostly sure because of the smoothy line, but slight changes to the way she was drawn gave me a small amount of doubt.
-
I mean I'm sure if I look back I'll see a difference but I didn't notice any difference when I saw the comic.
-
based on my limited knowledge of herpetology, they might want to get her to an ER... soonish.
-
I mean I'm sure if I look back I'll see a difference but I didn't notice any difference when I saw the comic.
Eh, I was tired and hopped up on recreational beverages of the identification-required class.
-
I don't see any snake pics that have that diamond pattern; the closest are some western rattlesnakes, but that's out of area (and there's no rattle in the comic).
Maybe it's supposed to be a corn snake, but it looks closer to a milk snake (though still not very close).
Not in any way an expert, just been looking at images.
-
I'm sure she's been injecting a little bit of snake venom every day to build up resistance in case a situation were to come up where she could pick up a snake and let it bite her for shock value.
-
Someone's reply to Jeph on Twitter (that Jeph replied to) suggests that it's a northern copperhead, which looks like the comic except with colours inverted.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Agkistrodon_contortrix_mokasen_CDC.png
In which case according to Wiki she probably won't die but will hurt like hell and should get it looked at regardless.
-
The snake, however, has contracted incurably cheerful obliviousness. Also, it's addicted to banana smoothies.
-
Em's face in the last panel is..disturbing. It's so serious looking, even for her.
-
Will she be the first character killed in QC? Will she get a Darwin award?
Stay tuned!
-
Emily why
(Wait, people seriously thought it wasn't Emily? How?)
There is something odd about the face. I don't know what. I think I would had slight doubts were it not for the smoothy.
-
Is there like some TVTropes rule that at least one character has to die in a comic?
-
No.
-
I don't think it's a lethal bite. But it can definitely hurt a lot, and that happening to Emily worries me. We've always seen her in a (sometimes overly) cheerful mood, I'm not sure how she would react to this.
Also I feel like the speech bubble in the first panel should point in the other direction.
-
Goodbye Ceremonial Frog.
-
That frog should be ready for its skydiving licence now, after all the times its been thrown around.
-
Sam looks positively delighted.
-
Is there like some TVTropes rule that at least one character has to die in a comic?
Sara.
-
Goodbye Ceremonial Frog.
Dropped without a ceremony. Let us hope he is able to find his cozy pond.
Finally, we are back in the woods. Emily tags along, I guess she was not angry about the frog smoothie. She does not look frightened by the snake bite; on the other hand, when have Emily ever acted as we should expect?
The walk in the woods will be brief this time, they have to get Emily to the ER.
-
Emily why
Thats what I'm asking.
Why ?
Warning - while you were reading the world climate has changed and homo sapiens got extinct. You may wish to review your post.
Damn. All readers gone ! Might need to learn answer faster then.
-
It's not clear to me that Emily has been bitten, anyway. The others would react like that just seeing her with the snake, and her pose could be showing off the snake as much as a bite.
-
Good move by the FrogLord - snakes are major predators.
Emily - if ever you visit Australia - DON'T DO THAT. If you're lucky, it will be a friendly household carpet snake or diamond python, but even then, it's as bad as a rat bite. If unlucky, a death adder, brown snake, etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc
Oh and Sam - any batrachian that size here is likely to be a Cane Toad. They secrete toxins from the glands on their backs. Do not handle with bare hands.
-
It's not clear to me that Emily has been bitten, anyway.
:?
Thats clearly displayed in the comic.
Emily is getting bitten in the last panel.
-
Now I look harder, there is a tiny speck of red by the snake's mouth...
-
I had to look twice too; she's definitely been bitten.
-
It looks pretty clear that the snake has embedded it's fangs into her arm to me. Not that a snake bites like that. However a Northern Copperhead's a good bet so... ER, with a quickness.
Safety Tip of the Day: Don't fuck with snakes unless you know what you're doing and can 100% identify the snake as harmless.

http://www.cdc.gov/niosh/topics/snakes/
In the U.S. there are four major venomous snakes including the very lethal coral snake. A rattler' will give you a firm "Fuck off mate" bite that'll leave you in pain for a few days. A water moccasin or coral snake will kill your ass. The Copperhead (probably) Emily is handling is one of the least venomous of the pit viper family of snakes and requires a SIGNIFICANT dose of venom to kill. Copperheads also commonly give dry bites for whatever reason, especially when they're freaked out.
-

Sara.
Who?
-
It's not clear to me that Emily has been bitten, anyway.
:?
Thats clearly displayed in the comic.
Emily is getting bitten in the last panel.
From the angle we see it, the snake's head appears to be close to Emily's wrist. That is all I can see. Why are you so sure that she has been bitten?

Snake psychology.
Holding a snake like that, the only possible reason it might not be biting your left arm, would be if it was busy biting your right arm. (Even I know that you're supposed to grip them by the head. Err, that is given that, for whatever reason, you have to catch them in the first place. In Emmy's case, you're just supposed to not get close.)
-
Eeeee! There's a snake in my trousers. Please suck the poison out!
-
You can see blood around the snake's mouth, if you look closely.
-

I once nearly ran over a king brown on my bicycle, thinking it was a stick. Never again.
But that being said, so few people actually die from snake and spider bites these days anyway because of antidotes and common sense.

A Cane Toad, and an Australian disregarding Zoë's wise advice about handling Cane Toads. All hail the Toadlord!

I've never been an advocate for violence against animals, but those cane toads...
-
It is strange for a Dane to read Jeph's claim that no one understands the rules of football. As if everybody didn't know what those lines mean.

Works for mushrooms, too.
And yeah, the second speech bubble definitely points to the wrong direction.
-
What's this "corn snakes bite like crazy" bullshit? :? I own a four-foot long corn snake that I've had since he was a baby and he's never bitten me, despite me handling him daily, and in fact, corn snakes are one of the first snakes to have been domesticated in North America because they are so docile. (And yeah, I know anything with a mouth can bite, but even if they do bite you, they don't have any teeth to speak of) I mean I'm not saying I would particularly advise anyone to handle wild snakes, especially if you're in a region that has poisonous ones, but this seems like some unnecessary fear-mongering on Jeph's part. And yeah, I recognize that fear of snakes is very common, but let's not start bashing the friendly ones. :(
How can you be afraid of this little cutie? :) (His name is Diamond)

Samantha is boasting.
-
And yeah, the second speech bubble definitely points to the wrong direction.
Where should it be pointing? It is pointing at Sam. Who else should it be pointing at?
-
It was pointing at Marten. It is now fixed.
-
I saw no reason to change the bubble, actually; I rather enjoyed the thought that Marten was remembering his childhood, when he had some adventures like Sam!
-
With Marten's mouth closed and Samantha obvioulsy speaking, it was clear from the start who was the intended speaker.
-
So weird. I literally dreamed this morning that I found a snake and it bit me, and all I did was carry it, attached to my finger, to another bush. It wasn't a big(ish) snake like that, it was a teeny red and black one ( I think it was a kingsnake?)
<insert witty signature here>
-
Welcome, new person!
Marten and Sam are in deep trouble if they have to carry Emily out.
-
My first thought was, "holy shit that thing has diamonds on its back." I grew up in Oklahoma where western diamondbacks are pretty common. I nearly stepped on one growing up, because it was hiding in the relatively short grass on our lawn. The locale of the comic means that a western diamondback would be unlikely, but of course in the world of comics, nothing is impossible.
Also, Eastern Diamondbacks (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crotalus_adamanteus), though they are not typically spotted anywhere near that far north.
-
Will Sam probably know what kind of snake it is? Maybe she's excited that it's rare?
-
Samantha is obviously delighted to see the snake. This most likely means that either it is not dangerous or she does not recognize it. It could be either. She may be really interested in biology and know a lot about local wildlife. Or she may just think frogs and snakes are cool and not really know much about them. We have not seen her identify any of the animals she has captured.
-
We have not seen [Sam] identify any of the animals she has captured.
Except for Froglord and Ceremonial Frog.
Oh wait, you meant identify their species? My bad. 8-)
-
Emily - if ever you visit Australia - DON'T DO THAT.
Neither Sam nor Emily would long survive Australia methinks - especially if they go out in the wilds. They'd pick up some lethally poisonous critter by mistake, going "hey what's that?" and their last hours would be filled with pain and misery.
-
We have not seen her identify any of the animals she has captured.
Today's strip, panel 1: "I got a corn snake that was about three feet long once"
-
Just to keep going on that thought... Remembering "you always call them 'Bitey'" makes me think Sam's had her share of ER visits and might know or have been taught poisonous vs non poisonous, even if she's not a budding precocious herpetologist.
-
Samantha is boasting.
Has Sam ever been referred to as Samantha in the comic?
Yep (http://questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=1958).
-
Emily
As far as Snakes go, she's the Chuck Norris of the QCverse.
-
Snakes, electric shocks, and bananas.
EDIT: Sound like a great name for a rock band...
-
A Cane Toad, and an Australian disregarding Zoë's wise advice about handling Cane Toads. All hail the Toadlord!
Whoo! That's a big friggin' toad!

JEPH YOU BASTARD I JUST SNORTED MY OVER-PRICED BEVERAGE ALL OVER MY MONITOR. :-D

Whoo! That's a big friggin' toad!
Aye, they are, and I've never been to Oz. But from what I heard, those things need to be exterminated. Cats and dogs tend to die when they take a bite out of those things, and shooting them is a literal "hit or miss" prospect… Not to mention most people who aren't farmers in Oz don't tend to have shooty-things. The country is also over-run by camels, 'roos, rabbits, and emus.

A quick search and seems like cane toads are edible if you remove their skin and glands. So we can use humans as pest control against the pests you mentioned. :-D
-
Marten's face in that last panel: priceless.

And here we have a sighting of the rare Decisive Martin in the wild...

I'm starting to imagine David Attenbotough describing this comic.
-
I love corn snakes. We (my mother and I) have leopard geckos and crested geckos, so we know many people who have snakes as pet. And corn snakes are so incredibly cute!
And Marten's look in the last panel is really awesome.
-

This just solidifies my theory that Emily is going to have a "Dora Moment" and come out with feelings for Marten at some point.
I'm really actually actively looking for more reasons to think this so feel free to ignore my thoughts. :-P
-
All I could think of is "did he just destroy the TEH shirt?" I had to go back a comic to make sure that wasn't what he was wearing.
-
It's okay, he has more TEH shirts. They reproduce in his closet.
-
It's okay, he has more TEH shirts. They reproduce in his closet.
And now we see. TEH shirt in Marten's closet. This shirt is not natural from this closet but once introduced decades ago it found no competition or predators and reproduced out of control taking away the habitat from other shirts.
-
Freaking Moto. Nice work Mark.
-
The shirt did not die...in vain.
-
For the record, corn snakes don't have sharp teeth; their teeth are basically hard little nubs that they use to hold their food to guide into their mouths. (They eat mice, which they swallow whole) A bite from a corn snake wouldn't draw blood as shown in the comic.
I love corn snakes. We (my mother and I) have leopard geckos and crested geckos, so we know many people who have snakes as pet. And corn snakes are so incredibly cute!
Ah! I was starting to think I was the only snake-lover here! :D
For anyone else who doubts the cuteness of snakes, here's another picture of Diamond, taken after I gave him a tissue box for a bed: :)

RIP shirt
goddammit Jeph!!! 1111 :D
Also, I may or may not be envious of Marten's body build/metabolism.
-
Come to think of it, I'm not sure if I've ever seen Loki. Oh right, I'm Facebook friends with him.
-
The shirt did not die...in vain.
If it had been a TEH shirt, it still wouldn't have been its last appearance; he does have two of them. There was a montage a few months back (don't remember the strip number) where he was getting dressed to go to the party with Tai (I think), and was looking for something different to wear. Last panel was him wearing a TEH shirt and saying, "Wait, I have two of these?"
EDIT: Found it. http://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=2614 (http://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=2614)
-
And the look on Marten's face in the last panel... priceless.
-
What is a corn snake doing in a New England wood? According to Wikipedia, they live much further south. They are common pets, so this one might be an abandoned or escaped former pet.
-
I also worried it was a TEH shirt but I'd forgotten the colour and also that he has two (or three, depending whether you take the news post as canon).
-
I love that they waited patiently for him to finish his heroic endeavours before telling him that the snake isn't venomous.
-
But the snake is in the trousers, why take off the shirt?
-
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

edit: Comment withdrawn.

Marten - pressure ON and AROUND the wound, not a tourniquet above it.
OK, if the ID is correct, not poisonous. But bleeding, it's a predator, and you never know what carrion it might have been chowing down on. So seek medical attention as you would from a rat bite. Clean with soap and water beforehand if you can.
Snakes, in my limited experience, while genius-level compared to frogs (which are less intelligent than most kitchen appliances - in this universe, not the QC one), are not the brightest bulbs in the chandelier. They are, however, affectionate, and like wrapping themselves round any convenient warm object when it's cold. Arms are ideal. It helps them regulate their temperature. I'm told that having a carpet snake in the house is a good alternative to having a cat when it comes to keeping the place rodent-free.
-
Considering that I've even had fish that demonstrated something approximating affection, I'm pretty sure that snakes can make good pets. In fact that one time a dude in a Live-Action game came in once with 9 baby pythons crawling through his (upper-body, keep your minds out of the gutter, people) his clothes and they were just hanging out there for warmth.
-
Marten - pressure ON and AROUND the wound, not a tourniquet above it.
That was my first thought too. We probably attended similar first-aid lessons.
-
People see tourniquets in movies, not realising that it's largely for limbs that are already going/gone.
-
Marten - pressure ON and AROUND the wound, not a tourniquet above it.
That was my first thought too. We probably attended similar first-aid lessons.
I also wondered. Maybe he tries to apply a tourniquet to stop the blood flow? That would have been a good idea if the snake was in fact poisonous, unfortunately humans have two bones in the lower arm …
-
Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snakebite) explains that an elastic bandage is better than a tourniquet, and that many cases unnecessary amputation have been the result of a tourniquet applied for too long, leading to gangrene and necrosis.

Is that really affection though? You're warm and it seems you haven't tried to eat them yet, so they don't bite you. It kinda reminds me of falconry. It's not so much that your raptor likes you as it's handler. You're just a stable source of food and shelter and even that's a bit above a snake's intellectual level.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/76379182@N04/10281413443
A small python probably would be an effective pest control solution, and the amusing jokes about a "domestic" carpet snake on one's carpet have amusing potential though I can see problems with just letting the snake run loose which would be ideal to eliminate the rodents.
-
I had a flashback to Galaxy Quest when I read today's comic. "Well, I see you managed to get your shirt off!"
-
Marten - pressure ON and AROUND the wound, not a tourniquet above it.

additionally; if i'm not mistaken, when a tourniquet is applied it needs to be above the elbow. tying off below the elbow does not stop blood flowing through the flesh between the radius and the ulna. of course, that's if you are already committed to losing the limb anyway.
still, misinformed or not, that's more of a man-of-action response than i'd have ever expected from marten. so good for hiim.
hopefully someone'll set him straight before he ever needs to treat a real injury.
-
I had a flashback to Galaxy Quest when I read today's comic. "Well, I see you managed to get your shirt off!"
"Welp, there goes his shirt."
Now, whilst we're thinking about Galaxy Quest, imagine this comic as narrated Alan Rickman.
-
Just want to add that 'Can you fashion some kind of rudimentary lathe?' is probably my favourite line in the history of cinema.
-
Damn, hero moment for Marten indeed. While yes, it wasn't maybe exactly how you're meant to do it, but let's face it, that showed Marten's measure, more than almost anything else could have. *salutes Mr Reed*

Well, cats and dogs show affection because you feed them and don't beat them and provide them with shelter.
-
True, but dogs and cats are slightly more affectionate and intelligent than the average snake. Affection is a little complex an emotion for say, a snake. A dog will nuzzle you happily to be close to you. A snake will curl up with you because you're warm and they're chilly.
-
Marten's been decisive before, usually when a friend was in danger.
-
And when he was deciding whether to get lunch before or after getting a haircut. Or when deciding to go to the store to buy soup.

I've seen way too many dogs getting happy for all reasons imaginable... So I stopped taking their happiness all too seriously when I compare "affection levels" between pets.

Considering Marten now has no shirt, is with Emily, and Tai has shipped Marten and Emily in the past (http://questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=2482), I'm going to guess Tai.
Then again, he's also with Sam, so that guess is likely full of shit.

What is appropriate first aid for poisonous snake bites?
"If someone is bitten by a poisonous snake, the bitten area should be immobilized and the victim transported to a hospital as quickly as possible. The bitten area should be washed with soap and water. A wide constriction bandage (tourniquet) may be applied two to four inches upstream of the bitten area (if on an extremity) so long as the pressure is not too tight (one or two fingers should be able to slide under the band). Overly tight tourniquets should never be used as these can block arterial blood flow to the affected area and worsen tissue damage."
Found this here (http://www.onhealth.com/snake_bites/article.htm) - I imagine there are differences in opinion about this, but there ya go.

Around here they tell people to not use tourniquet. It makes sense since non-trained people have a good chance to cause more damage than help this way.
-
Boy Scout learnin' was to immobilize the bitten limb as well. First aid training was changing all the time, but if I remember correctly the currently they're taught to avoid using tourniquets at all.
-
Unnecessary facepalm for really mild and not all that inappropriate teasing.
Bro.
-
This is M. T. Reed we are talking about here.
But it could have been much worse. It could have been the TEH shirt.
-
Unnecessary facepalm for really mild and not all that inappropriate teasing.
Bro.
Ironic? Or maybe a "this is silly" facepalm? There are many shades of face-palm-ery... the Epic Picard Double Face-Palm being the apex of "really? what the FUCK?!"-ness.
-
Yes, I'd interpreted it as an "I'm kinda embarrassed" facepalm.
-
Oh Emily...
-
So is Emily teasing Marten as a way of teasing Sam, or teasing Sam as a way of teasing Marten, or is she too oblivious to be doing either deliberately?
-
So the real question is, who are they going to run into while hiking now that Marten has no shirt??
Mosquitoes. Who will be quite hungry - and carrying West Nile virus.
-
This is M. T. Reed we are talking about here.

T.?? Is that canon?
Tiberius?
-
I can't tell if Emily is making a move or really just messing with Sam to the best of her ability
-
What we know about "Tiberius" (http://questionablecontent.net/1835).
-
I imagine Jeph evilly twisting a fake mustache as most of the readers experience this same feeling.
I can't tell if Emily is making a move or really just messing with Sam to the best of her ability
-

I'm pretty sure Emily is winding Sam up. Emily totally 'blivved out* when Tai suggested she sleep with Marten.
*I just invented that term, I think, but I hereby place it in the public domain.
-
I'm pretty sure Emily is winding Sam up.
I'm all for the theory she is just speaking her mind, not really noticing whats going on. AGAIN.
-
I have a feeling that Emily is essentially asexual, but that's not canon so who knows? Certainly I don't think there's the faintest possibility of her and Marten getting together.
-
I can see it.
... I'd worry about what Marten'd been drinking, but I can see it.
-

IMHO there is always a possibility (albeit a very small one) until either she or Marten is hooked up with someone else.

When I was last taught about snake bites in Australia, we were told to immobilize the limb by wrapping a bandage around the entire limb (of course this means you have to have a bandage at hand - I think the message was that you ideally should have one when you hike around where you're likely to meet snakes) tightly enough so that the limb can't move much and the poison doesn't spread, but not too tight to stop the blood flow. Also, with Australian snakes it is apparently sufficient to just wear long trousers made out of a reasonably strong fabric, since their fangs are too short to get through those (in contrast to most Asian, European or American snakes!).
-
Full limb compression is the way to go for snake bites, yeah.
And sure, the snakes here have relatively short fangs, but you try wearing long trousers in an Australian summer :P
-
I can't tell if Emily is making a move or really just messing with Sam to the best of her ability
Given the "Emily enjoys messing with Sam" note, I'd say the latter, but she's doing so by speaking her mind. She might well be oblivious to whatever effect these observations might have on Marten.
-

Been there, do that. The bosses get mildly annoyed, since my job involves physical labour in the outside heat. But snakes are uncommon in the city areas, so there is that.
So is Emily teasing Marten as a way of teasing Sam, or teasing Sam as a way of teasing Marten, or is she too oblivious to be doing either deliberately?
Yes.
-

Emily enjoys messing with Sam.
-

I do harvest work out on the grain silos every year - we have to wear long trousers, boots, helmets, and deal with the reflected heat of bigass metal silos and concrete. There are many many snakes around there. And many a snake has met its end under a heavy boot on that site.

I have a feeling that Emily is essentially asexual, but that's not canon so who knows? Certainly I don't think there's the faintest possibility of her and Marten getting together.
Well, she certainly is weird (http://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=2490) and clueless (http://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=2482), but not exactly asexual. But I would guess that Marten finds her just too weird.
EDIT: Found it, Emily has had a boyfriend before (http://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=2568).
-
You can have had a boyfriend and still be asexual. I'm not saying it's certain, I'm just positing that it isn't unrealistic and would fit with her character. This is the first instance of her ever expressing anything approaching an interest in someone, and she is clearly messing with Sam by doing so.
-
I can't tell if Emily is making a move or really just messing with Sam to the best of her ability
I'm pretty sure Emily is winding Sam up. Emily totally 'blivved out* when Tai suggested she sleep with Marten.
*I just invented that term, I think, but I hereby place it in the public domain.
I will use it. Thank you.

For those that don't know it, Girls With Slingshots (http://www.girlswithslingshots.com/) (occasionally) visits the issues that come up (or don't :P ) between one character and her asexual girlfriend.
-
For a snake bite, I tend to go for a hoppy lager and some English strong cider.

I've debated making an account on this forum for a long time, but I decided today would be the day because a) Emily is my favorite character, 2) I want Marten to find someone SO BAD, and d) I could definitely ship them. In fact, I do a little bit already.
And also, while it's true that Emily may be a bit naive (http://questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=2482) when it comes to frickle-fracking, that doesn't mean she don't want some, knowmsayin'? She knows a cute butt when she sees one.
-
I was thinking of GWS when I made that post :)
Hello, new person! Emily is one of my favourites too. Be wary of shipping though, the rules are pretty strict against it here (the line between speculation based on the comic and shipping is tricky to locate so err on the side of caution).
-
First of all: Welcome to the forums.
Keep in mind however that explicit shipping of characters is frowned upon here. Slight hinting in that direction is sometimes tolerated if the coupling seems likely to happen in universe, so speculation about what might develop (if it isn't explicit) from current comics isn't a problem most of the time.
Now: enjoy your stay in this crazy place.

I think Emily is messing with Sam - I don't think Emily is asexual, though. The fact that she thinks about butts being cute, has had at least one boyfriend, and talked with Marten and Claire about kissing seems an indicator that she has spent time thinking about sexual topics. I was under the impression Asexual meant you weren't interested in sexual activity, so that doesn't seem to fit. And yes, I suppose having a boyfriend and kissing don't necessarily mean sex is involved, but thinking about cute butts would likely lead to a sexual thought or two. Overall, Emily seems like she'd have more of a problem finding someone who doesn't mind her odd ways of thinking than not being interested in sex. Maybe Clinton?
Aside from all that, she makes me think of Luna Lovegood from Harry Potter in some ways.
-
Either my eyesight is not what it used to be, or I may be dumber than yesterday (or both), but I can't read Marten's t-shirt.
-
Godspeed You Black Emperor, which is apparently a band. (Although the band has an exclamation mark after the "You" which is just silly but whatever)
-
Y'know, the more Jeph does the Robots Have Civil Rights Too thing, the harder it is to justify strips like this one...
-
Think of it like Padma punching Faye.
-
Could be the start of a Pintsize Gets Upgraded arc....

Again? Oh, unless you mean into a human like chassis? Eh...I don't see it.

GY!BE were named GYBE! a few albums earlier. They're more of a music project than a band. Their music, at least to me, requires you to dedicate your whole attention to it. It's the kind of music I'd consider art. It takes a moment of adjustment, but it's incredible.
-

Exactly. Some robots (or humans) have it coming.

It would be the End Of Man. *nod*

Just to clarify, Are we allowed to be lonely and desperate on the Internet and Ship the whole cast in a crazy alt-rock, coffeehouse hipster , sweaty, fanfic orgy? And that poor aprentice who got killed off in Oglaf too... He needs to catch a break more that Marten. As long as we're non-specific and plausible in-comic about it? Like say Pint-Size having a dream while he's knocked out?
-
After pintsize gets punched cut to May shedding a 'I just littered in front of a indian' tear.
-
Y'know, the more Jeph does the Robots Have Civil Rights Too thing, the harder it is to justify strips like this one...
Hopefully May didn't see that. She'd be right back to robot jail for beating up a human kid.
Somebody is gonna have to have a talk with Sam about how to respect AI's.

Only if I can cross-strip-ship Clinton with Candy from GWS. If that isn't permitted then I weep (ironically) for the fate of the world (in a humorous manner).

If robots have equal rights, Sam's looking at juvie for assault.
All the more reason to declare only homo sapiens are people.

"Only humans should be people so we can hit non-humans" is what that sounds like :psyduck:

Only if Pintsize presses charges. He's been fairly chill so far considering.

Strongly Disagree.
-
Jeph said once that QC robots don't feel pain the way humans do.
If hitting people didn't hurt them and any resulting dents could be popped right out, the law might be more relaxed about assault.
-
I have the impression that Sam didn't thought she would actually hit Pintsize. She probably imagined that as a machine he would have much faster reaction than a human and block/dodge the attack. She already demonstrated to have lots of misconceptions about robots earlier.

I believe Sam and Emily are both able to instinctively recognize that it is the mandate of the universe to hit Pintsize for saying something offensive. They both just happened to jump the gun a bit. Faye on the other hand has no problem bashing Pintsize if I remember correctly.

They are robot wisperers. They assert that they are the leader of the pack by a demonstration of power and dominance.

You know, for a military spec case, Pintsize sure does seem to dent pretty easily...
Milspec isn't necessarily about resistance to deformation; it's about resistance to damage: a case which deforms without harming the components when hit and which can be easily returned to normal with hand tools is infinitely preferable to a solid brick of a case that allows internal components to bounce around inside and shatter beyond repair.
Same basic principle behind crumple zones in cars only in this case the crumple seems infinitely repairable.
-
Plus, Pintsize's chassis isn't milspec anymore.

Good point, I would have just thunk that it wouldn't have dented as bad as it did (be it the comedic value would have been much lower). Also, it seems like some form of internal component damage has been achieved, at least until they pop the dent out anyways.
Plus, Pintsize's chassis isn't milspec anymore.
I though he was still using the milspec one, they just took the laser out. Unless I am totally forgetting something...
-

Faye first met Pintsize very early (http://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=5) in the series. It was not her first impulse to hit Pintsize, she waited until he totally deserved it (http://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=1450).
-
Yeah it was fun when Pintsize got sent flying for showing veronica goatse, it was funny when Emily decided to be her usual weird-as-hell self, but now... not really. As said, robots have rights, that's a fact. Also: "The right to swing my fist ends where the other man's nose begins". Doesn't matter if Pintsize can't feel it, he's being systematically assaulted these days and hasn't even done anything that weird to "warrant" the punch. Jeph will probably address it though, Sam needs to learn.
-
In answer to the questions about shipping, the answer is no - Jeph doesn't like speculation about his characters having sexual involvements, he finds it creepy. If he's shown them expressing an interest, you can discuss that, but not any kind of fantasy scene (the forum almost got deleted due to incidents like that).
-
Plus, Pintsize's chassis isn't milspec anymore.

No, I think you're right. I thought Marten and Pintsize went with Marigold's suggestion (http://questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=1459) but apparently it didn't happen.
-
And yes, I suppose having a boyfriend
I remember Emily talked about it but I can't find the comic. Help guys?
-
Aw, come on people, it's not like Marten didn't get punched by Faye semi-frequently at the beginning of the comic, sometimes even getting bruises. It may not be a good thing to do, but it's not necessary to report every case of it as assault.
Also, by that logic Pintsize would be swimming in a pool of sexual harassment-charges.
Also, hi Forum!
-

It was linked earlier in this thread.

Nintheoretic makes a good point. Even considering just May, Pintsize not being in Robot Jail is impressive to say the least.
-

Pitsize's worst "criminal" act was semi-accidentally causing thousands in property damage to an insured cafe that apparently decided not to press charges (or possibly was wholly unable to since the robot rights act wasn't in force then) whereas May actively tried to embezzle millions and didn't seem to see the problem beforehand. All of Pintsize's other questionable activities are mostly related to being an asshole and collecting weird porn, neither of which are strictly illegal.
-
Pintsize frequently sexually harasses people and grabs them inappropriately, both of which are criminal offences in the UK at least.
-
And here in Oz, too...
On another note, Welcome, newcomer! :-)

I get the impression that in both those strips Pintsize had a tone of voice that screamed "pervert". Respect goes both ways and Pintsize has shown that he doesn't respect people's boundaries.
-

Just because someone is an AI doesn't give them the right to be asshole. Just because someone is not an AI doesn't give them the right to be asshole.
I think comedic effect is the only important thing here. One shouldn't take this too seriously. It really depends on Pintsize's attitude towards it too.
-
To avoid the AI rights and responsibilities issue... Does anyone else see Sam becoming Emily's protege now?
-
Pintsize might not be considered to have a maturity ranking of an adult therefore even now he can't be charged as a criminal.

He has two of those shirts.

Neither Samantha nor Emily look as if they are offended. Actually both punch Pintsize with a happy smile on their face.

It's a moot point here anyway, Sam's a minor.
-

Could be worse. He could have reactive armor.

Back after two or three days without Net Service
And I find Marten Reed has become a heroic fugure - albeit unnecessaraly so and Pintsize has been punched out again.
the more things change ........

What he needs is a nerf head that is more squishable.

He must not have wrapped that tourniquet very tightly, because Emily is still wearing it.
-
i would assume it's now acting as a bandage
-
Or a memento
-
anyway, I like this strip. it's a good strip.
-
That butt-tourniquet is going to require a beach towel.
That's what Marten should have said.

Or maybe boxing/MMA headgear.
-
Prediction: Next week sees Marten trying to go about his life, but with literally every other character in the comic making tourniquet jokes at him on the way
-
And why is Marten friends with these people again?
-
Masochisim?
-
What he needs is a nerf head that is more squishable.
Are the pores in a mil-spec nerf head filled with nerf gas?
Cosette is just the person to ask for a tourniquet for a head injury.
What's up with Emily? That was something indistinguishable from social awareness!
-

*groan*
Cosette is just the person to ask for a tourniquet for a head injury.
I'd think that would be more Raven's thing (wherever she is). I always thought that Cosette was just clumsy and unlucky, not daft. Although, depending on how hard she hit her head, that may be a matter worthy of consideration.
-
I think they are thinking about bandages and not really tourniquets.
So she is not asking to be strangled, just that Marten rip his shirt to create bandages.
-
And why is Marten friends with these people again?
Thanks. I wouldn't go as far as that, but my thoughts went into the same direction.
Unless of course they want a look at his upper body, but then they are going about it in the most ambiguous way possible.
-

Perhaps a head made of the same stuff that Super Balls are made of. Although that might tempt people to bounce his head off the wall more often.

It would have been totally worth it.

They say you can choose your friends, but that's not entirely true.

Hu !
I get why Faye and Dora would make fun out of Marten.
But ... why Cosette ?!?!
Thats kind of out of character for her, unless I missed something ?
Oh well, I guess thats a case of peer pressure.

Away and to the Secret Bakery. "Screw you guys, I'm going home"

That's what Marten should have said.
Or a tarp (http://tarpusa.com/) But then, Marten might not have survived Faye's punching.
What's up with Emily? That was something indistinguishable from social awareness!
I agree, this is not Emily's usual weirdness. But personal development is part of the QC timeline, the characters tend to improve over time (except Pintsize, perhaps). As from now on, Emily is Marten's loyal defender, trying to protect him from the others' merciless teasing. Emily has probably been a victim of teasing herself, and knows how it hurts. But I am afraid Emily is developing a crush on Marten. This cannot possibly end well.
-
I like how Jeph made sure that Emily said "venomous" so people would quit emailing him.
-
I find it depressing that he had to bother.
-
Emily is up to something...
Don't worry Mark, you were quite manly and bad ass jumping to the rescue like that. Sure you didn't need to, but props on the reaction.

I get why Faye and Dora would make fun out of Marten.

Honestly, knowing Cosette, hers was probably a genuine request. She's good (read: disastrously bad) like that.

Cosette is the cutest ever in panel #3. I see no blood, but she probably needs medical attention, as usual. I imagine she is in the ER several times during a week.
-
Did Emily ever see a doctor about the bite? I mean, sure, it wasn't venomous. But it was still a bite by a wild animal that broke the skin. I'm hardly an expert, but that seems ... unhygenic at best.

As from now on, Emily is Marten's loyal defender, trying to protect him from the others' merciless teasing. Emily has probably been a victim of teasing herself, and knows how it hurts. But I am afraid Emily is developing a crush on Marten. This cannot possibly end well.
Or it'll end like this (N.B. Jeph's "news" post on this comic): http://questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=2405 (http://questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=2405)

Apply tourniquet to neck
That was my first thought too, but I realized it's probably not what she meant. Probably.
-
I imagine she is in the ER several times during a week.
It's the recurring days she's not in the hospital that the doctors start to worry.
-
I see Cosette's eyes have reverted to blue agan. They havebeen grey, blue and brow
Grey: http://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=1549 (http://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=1549)
Blue: http://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=2301 (http://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=2301)
Brown: http://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=2525 (http://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=2525)
Contacts? She changes hair colors for different jobs; why not eyes?
Or will Emily one day ask to press her belly button?
-
So thought, Emily is obviously still wearing the tourniquet, which has probably been reduced in tightness to "fashionable cloth bracelet". Favor from her big strong hero maybe? I mean this is obviously a ship tease from Herr Trollmaster General, his gloriousness Jephizba but come on! No one would expect that.
-
Hu !
I get why Faye and Dora would make fun out of Marten.
But ... why Cosette ?!?!
Thats kind of out of character for her, unless I missed something ?
Oh well, I guess thats a case of peer pressure.
I like how Emily supports Marten, though.
And why is Marten friends with these people again?
Habits die hard, they say.
I think you guys are missing the "chance to make a member of the opposite sex strip in front of you"
Yeah, my first reaction wasn't "Aw, they're all being mean to Marten", it was "Wow, look how many ladies want Marten to rip his shirt off for them!"

Like the old story of plotting the location of bullet holes found in warplanes?

No, she's actually a Founder whose hiding out from The Great Link.
-
The twist being, the rest of the Founders aren't looking all that hard.

Most likely it was a coloring slip but I have heard stories about people whose eyes change color with mood or light conditions.
By searching the Internet I found other people with similar claims. Probably the light conditions could affect how we perceive the eye colors and the blood pressure could affect the colors slightly but I didn't found any formal study in my short search.
-
Such people do exist; I'm one of them. My eyes are green but under certain conditions they appear light brown.
-
Mine do that too... they'll go from blue to grey.
-
I shift between blue, gray, green and brown.

Is your name Cosete?

My eyes are "the colour of an Irish bog". Along with my somewhat pointed ears, when a child this led to my being thought to be a leprechaun.

No. It is not.

Oh she's got green eyes / Oh she's got blue eyes / Oh she's got grey brown eyes

Has it been conclusively proven one way or another? I mean you COULD be one... just slightly taller than average for the species.
-
Wouldst someone like to do this week's WCDT and poll?
-
I guess I could give it a try.
-
My eyes are consistently blue, but I wish they were a more unusual colour...like purple. Like a deep purple.

Full heterochromia is the way to go for interesting and unusual eyes.
-
Pilchard, hush.
(I knew someone was going to respond with that and I had this response planned)
Hedgie, nah, I want two purple eyes.
-

Blue eyes already are unusual, most of the world population have dark brown eyes.
If you want crazy eyes you can also get contacts.
-
My hands shake a little, and I'm very uncomfortable putting things in my eyes. Also I said more unusual.
-
Albinos and ocular albinos can have eyes that look purple under certain light conditions.
There is a procedure where they use laser to disrupt the pigment layer of the iris to turn brown eyes into blue. Maybe if they use it on you you can end up with an eye light enough to look violet under certain light conditions.
Ironically people with the common brown eyes could use this to get some fancy heterochromia and become more unusual than the blue eyed minority.
-
I wish my eyes would either stay put at a rich green or the lovely storm cloud grey I get now and then.
-
I wish I could have laser eyes. :-D
-
I want Fremen eyes.
-
Digital camera with wireless. And interchangeable lenses.

Muad'dib
-
Bette Davis Eyes.
-
I wish I could wear contacts. I would love bright green or purple eyes. But I freak out big time whenever I try to put them in. I freak out looking at other people putting contacts in their eyes.... I used to have medium green eyes, but they've changed to just muddy brown as I got older.
-
I wish I could have laser eyes. :-D
Yeah, but then every time you needed eye surgery you'd have to pay for laser eye surgery.
-
Better late than never ....
What he needs is a nerf head that is more squishable.
Visco-elastic polymers would be the solution since they absorb a lot of energy without imparting much of it back to whatever collided with it in the first place.
Maybe this is the reason why both girls thought his head was of the squishy variety.
Pintsize lacks such a covering that could be deemed normal for a consumer version of his model type but is not standard issue on a military grade chasis.
Eyes? Mine are blue or bluish and I have on again off again contemplated contacts for cosplay but touching eyeballs freaks me right out even though I get no qualms with peeled grapes.
Now cybernetic eyes would require major surgery and such but the concept has the techno-geek in me squee just a bit with all the possibilities of machine / cyber vision.
-
I also can't stand the idea of putting something in my eye. I would like a contact lense with an iris, not for cosmetic reasons, but because it would improve my vision. A large part of my right iris is missing due to an accident when I was 10.

Dang it! Lock up those SCPs already! They're a health hazard.

There are some prosthetic irises that seems to be much better than the ones we had some time ago. You should research a little and ask your doctor about it.
