EMILY!!!! NOOOOOO!!!!!!

She's rather blaise for being bitten by a snake.  Is the lady afraid of anything?

Of course it was Emily. Duh.
Seriously, the amount of speculation on last week's comic as to whether or not that was her was just a wee bit ridiculous.

I would pay money to see someone make Metal Gear Emily. It's either the best or worst idea ever.

I was mostly sure because of the smoothy line,  but slight changes to the way she was drawn gave me a small amount of doubt.

I don't see any snake pics that have that diamond pattern; the closest are some western rattlesnakes, but that's out of area (and there's no rattle in the comic).

Maybe it's supposed to be a corn snake, but it looks closer to a milk snake (though still not very close).

Not in any way an expert, just been looking at images.

I'm sure she's been injecting a little bit of snake venom every day to build up resistance in case a situation were to come up where she could pick up a snake and let it bite her for shock value.

Someone's reply to Jeph on Twitter (that Jeph replied to) suggests that it's a northern copperhead, which looks like the comic except with colours inverted.

In which case according to Wiki she probably won't die but will hurt like hell and should get it looked at regardless.

I don't think it's a lethal bite. But it can definitely hurt a lot, and that happening to Emily worries me. We've always seen her in a (sometimes overly) cheerful mood, I'm not sure how she would react to this.

Also I feel like the speech bubble in the first panel should point in the other direction.

Goodbye Ceremonial Frog.
Dropped without a ceremony. Let us hope he is able to find his cozy pond.

Finally, we are back in the woods. Emily tags along, I guess she was not angry about the frog smoothie. She does not look frightened by the snake bite; on the other hand, when have Emily ever acted as we should expect?

The walk in the woods will be brief this time, they have to get Emily to the ER.

It's not clear to me that Emily has been bitten, anyway.  The others would react like that just seeing her with the snake, and her pose could be showing off the snake as much as a bite.

Good move by the FrogLord - snakes are major predators.

Emily - if ever you visit Australia - DON'T DO THAT. If you're lucky, it will be a friendly household carpet snake or diamond python, but even then, it's as bad as a rat bite. If unlucky, a death adder, brown snake, etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc

Oh and Sam - any batrachian that size here is likely to be a Cane Toad. They secrete toxins from the glands on their backs. Do not handle with bare hands.

It looks pretty clear that the snake has embedded it's fangs into her arm to me. Not that a snake bites like that. However a Northern Copperhead's a good bet so... ER, with a quickness.

Safety Tip of the Day: Don't fuck with snakes unless you know what you're doing and can 100% identify the snake as harmless.

Emily - if ever you visit Australia - DON'T DO THAT. If you're lucky, it will be a friendly household carpet snake or diamond python, but even then, it's as bad as a rat bite. If unlucky, a death adder, brown snake, etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc

http://www.cdc.gov/niosh/topics/snakes/

In the U.S. there are four major venomous snakes including the very lethal coral snake. A rattler' will give you a firm "Fuck off mate" bite that'll leave you in pain for a few days. A water moccasin or coral snake will kill your ass. The Copperhead (probably) Emily is handling is one of the least venomous of the pit viper family of snakes and requires a SIGNIFICANT dose of venom to kill. Copperheads also commonly give dry bites for whatever reason, especially when they're freaked out.

Snake psychology.

Holding a snake like that, the only possible reason it might not be biting your left arm, would be if it was busy biting your right arm.  (Even I know that you're supposed to grip them by the head.  Err, that is given that, for whatever reason, you have to catch them in the first place.  In Emmy's case, you're just supposed to not get close.)

I once nearly ran over a king brown on my bicycle, thinking it was a stick. Never again.

But that being said, so few people actually die from snake and spider bites these days anyway because of antidotes and common sense.

What's this "corn snakes bite like crazy" bullshit?   :?  I own a four-foot long corn snake that I've had since he was a baby and he's never bitten me, despite me handling him daily, and in fact, corn snakes are one of the first snakes to have been domesticated in North America because they are so docile.  (And yeah, I know anything with a mouth can bite, but even if they do bite you, they don't have any teeth to speak of)  I mean I'm not saying I would particularly advise anyone to handle wild snakes, especially if you're in a region that has poisonous ones, but this seems like some unnecessary fear-mongering on Jeph's part.  And yeah, I recognize that fear of snakes is very common, but let's not start bashing the friendly ones.  :(

How can you be afraid of this little cutie?  :)  (His name is Diamond)

My first thought was, "holy shit that thing has diamonds on its back."  I grew up in Oklahoma where western diamondbacks are pretty common.  I nearly stepped on one growing up, because it was hiding in the relatively short grass on our lawn.  The locale of the comic means that a western diamondback would be unlikely, but of course in the world of comics, nothing is impossible.

Also, Eastern Diamondbacks (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crotalus_adamanteus), though they are not typically spotted anywhere near that far north.

Samantha is obviously delighted to see the snake. This most likely means that either it is not dangerous or she does not recognize it. It could be either. She may be really interested in biology and know a lot about local wildlife. Or she may just think frogs and snakes are cool and not really know much about them. We have not seen her identify any of the animals she has captured.

Neither Sam nor Emily would long survive Australia methinks - especially if they go out in the wilds. They'd pick up some lethally poisonous critter by mistake, going "hey what's that?" and their last hours would be filled with pain and misery.

Aye, they are, and I've never been to Oz.  But from what I heard, those things need to be exterminated.  Cats and dogs tend to die when they take a bite out of those things, and shooting them is a literal "hit or miss" prospect…  Not to mention most people who aren't farmers in Oz don't tend to have shooty-things.  The country is also over-run by camels, 'roos, rabbits, and emus.

A quick search and seems like cane toads are edible if you remove their skin and glands. So we can use humans as pest control against the pests you mentioned.  :-D

(Yay!)
And Emily seems to be impressed.

This just solidifies my theory that Emily is going to have a "Dora Moment" and come out with feelings for Marten at some point.

I'm really actually actively looking for more reasons to think this so feel free to ignore my thoughts.  :-P

And now we see. TEH shirt in Marten's closet. This shirt is not natural from this closet but once introduced decades ago it found no competition or predators and reproduced out of control taking away the habitat from other shirts.

For the record, corn snakes don't have sharp teeth; their teeth are basically hard little nubs that they use to hold their food to guide into their mouths.  (They eat mice, which they swallow whole)  A bite from a corn snake wouldn't draw blood as shown in the comic.

I love corn snakes. We (my mother and I) have leopard geckos and crested geckos, so we know many people who have snakes as pet. And corn snakes are so incredibly cute!

Ah!  I was starting to think I was the only snake-lover here!  :D

The shirt did not die...in vain.

If it had been a TEH shirt, it still wouldn't have been its last appearance; he does have two of them. There was a montage a few months back (don't remember the strip number) where he was getting dressed to go to the party with Tai (I think), and was looking for something different to wear. Last panel was him wearing a TEH shirt and saying, "Wait, I have two of these?"

Marten - pressure ON and AROUND the wound, not a tourniquet above it.

OK, if the ID is correct, not poisonous. But bleeding, it's a predator, and you never know what carrion it might have been chowing down on. So seek medical attention as you would from a rat bite. Clean with soap and water beforehand if you can.

Snakes, in my limited experience, while genius-level compared to frogs (which are less intelligent than most kitchen appliances - in this universe, not the QC one), are not the brightest bulbs in the chandelier. They are, however, affectionate, and like wrapping themselves round any convenient warm object when it's cold. Arms are ideal. It helps them regulate their temperature. I'm told that having a carpet snake in the house is a good alternative to having a cat when it comes to keeping the place rodent-free.

Considering that I've even had fish that demonstrated something approximating affection, I'm pretty sure that snakes can make good pets.  In fact that one time a dude in a Live-Action game came in once with 9 baby pythons crawling through his (upper-body, keep your minds out of the gutter, people) his clothes and they were just hanging out there for warmth.

I also wondered. Maybe he tries to apply a tourniquet to stop the blood flow? That would have been a good idea if the snake was in fact poisonous, unfortunately humans have two bones in the lower arm …

Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snakebite) explains that an elastic bandage is better than a tourniquet, and that many cases unnecessary amputation have been the result of a tourniquet applied for too long, leading to gangrene and necrosis.

Is that really affection though? You're warm and it seems you haven't tried to eat them yet, so they don't bite you. It kinda reminds me of falconry. It's not so much that your raptor likes you as it's handler. You're just a stable source of food and shelter and even that's a bit above a snake's intellectual level.

A small python probably would be an effective pest control solution, and the amusing jokes about a "domestic" carpet snake on one's carpet have amusing potential though I can see problems with just letting the snake run loose which would be ideal to eliminate the rodents.

additionally; if i'm not mistaken, when a tourniquet is applied it needs to be above the elbow. tying off below the elbow does not stop blood flowing through the flesh between the radius and the ulna. of course, that's if you are already committed to losing the limb anyway.

still, misinformed or not, that's more of a man-of-action response than i'd have ever expected from marten. so good for hiim.

True, but dogs and cats are slightly more affectionate and intelligent than the average snake. Affection is a little complex an emotion for say, a snake. A dog will nuzzle you happily to be close to you. A snake will curl up with you because you're warm and they're chilly.

What is appropriate first aid for poisonous snake bites?

"If someone is bitten by a poisonous snake, the bitten area should be immobilized and the victim transported to a hospital as quickly as possible. The bitten area should be washed with soap and water. A wide constriction bandage (tourniquet) may be applied two to four inches upstream of the bitten area (if on an extremity) so long as the pressure is not too tight (one or two fingers should be able to slide under the band). Overly tight tourniquets should never be used as these can block arterial blood flow to the affected area and worsen tissue damage."

Found this here (http://www.onhealth.com/snake_bites/article.htm) - I imagine there are differences in opinion about this, but there ya go.

Around here they tell people to not use tourniquet. It makes sense since non-trained people have a good chance to cause more damage than help this way.

When I was last taught about snake bites in Australia, we were told to immobilize the limb by wrapping a bandage around the entire limb (of course this means you have to have a bandage at hand - I think the message was that you ideally should have one when you hike around where you're likely to meet snakes) tightly enough so that the limb can't move much and the poison doesn't spread, but not too tight to stop the blood flow. Also, with Australian snakes it is apparently sufficient to just wear long trousers made out of a reasonably strong fabric, since their fangs are too short to get through those (in contrast to most Asian, European or American snakes!).

So is Emily teasing Marten as a way of teasing Sam, or teasing Sam as a way of teasing Marten, or is she too oblivious to be doing either deliberately?
Yes.

Emily enjoys messing with Sam.

I do harvest work out on the grain silos every year - we have to wear long trousers, boots, helmets, and deal with the reflected heat of bigass metal silos and concrete. There are many many snakes around there. And many a snake has met its end under a heavy boot on that site.

I have a feeling that Emily is essentially asexual, but that's not canon so who knows? Certainly I don't think there's the faintest possibility of her and Marten getting together.
Well, she certainly is weird (http://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=2490) and clueless (http://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=2482), but not exactly asexual. But I would guess that Marten finds her just too weird.

EDIT: Found it, Emily has had a boyfriend before (http://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=2568).

You can have had a boyfriend and still be asexual. I'm not saying it's certain, I'm just positing that it isn't unrealistic and would fit with her character. This is the first instance of her ever expressing anything approaching an interest in someone, and she is clearly messing with Sam by doing so.

I can't tell if Emily is making a move or really just messing with Sam to the best of her ability
I'm pretty sure Emily is winding Sam up. Emily totally 'blivved out* when Tai suggested she sleep with Marten.

*I just invented that term, I think, but I hereby place it in the public domain.

I will use it. Thank you.

I've debated making an account on this forum for a long time, but I decided today would be the day because a) Emily is my favorite character, 2) I want Marten to find someone SO BAD, and d) I could definitely ship them. In fact, I do a little bit already.

And also, while it's true that Emily may be a bit naive (http://questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=2482) when it comes to frickle-fracking, that doesn't mean she don't want some, knowmsayin'? She knows a cute butt when she sees one.

Hello, new person! Emily is one of my favourites too. Be wary of shipping though, the rules are pretty strict against it here (the line between speculation based on the comic and shipping is tricky to locate so err on the side of caution).

First of all: Welcome to the forums.

Keep in mind however that explicit shipping of characters is frowned upon here. Slight hinting in that direction is sometimes tolerated if the coupling seems likely to happen in universe, so speculation about what might develop (if it isn't explicit) from current comics isn't a problem most of the time.

Now: enjoy your stay in this crazy place.

I think Emily is messing with Sam - I don't think Emily is asexual, though. The fact that she thinks about butts being cute, has had at least one boyfriend, and talked with Marten and Claire about kissing seems an indicator that she has spent time thinking about sexual topics. I was under the impression Asexual meant you weren't interested in sexual activity, so that doesn't seem to fit. And yes, I suppose having a boyfriend and kissing don't necessarily mean sex is involved, but thinking about cute butts would likely lead to a sexual thought or two. Overall, Emily seems like she'd have more of a problem finding someone who doesn't mind her odd ways of thinking than not being interested in sex. Maybe Clinton?

Aside from all that, she makes me think of Luna Lovegood from Harry Potter in some ways.

GY!BE were named GYBE! a few albums earlier. They're more of a music project than a band. Their music, at least to me, requires you to dedicate your whole attention to it. It's the kind of music I'd consider art. It takes a moment of adjustment, but it's incredible.

Jeph said once that QC robots don't feel pain the way humans do.

If hitting people didn't hurt them and any resulting dents could be popped right out, the law might be more relaxed about assault.

Milspec isn't necessarily about resistance to deformation; it's about resistance to damage: a case which deforms without harming the components when hit and which can be easily returned to normal with hand tools is infinitely preferable to a solid brick of a case that allows internal components to bounce around inside and shatter beyond repair.
Same basic principle behind crumple zones in cars only in this case the crumple seems infinitely repairable.

Good point, I would have just thunk that it wouldn't have dented as bad as it did (be it the comedic value would have been much lower). Also, it seems like some form of internal component damage has been achieved, at least until they pop the dent out anyways.

Plus, Pintsize's chassis isn't milspec anymore.

I though he was still using the milspec one, they just took the laser out. Unless I am totally forgetting something...

Yeah it was fun when Pintsize got sent flying for showing veronica goatse, it was funny when Emily decided to be her usual weird-as-hell self, but now... not really. As said, robots have rights, that's a fact. Also: "The right to swing my fist ends where the other man's nose begins". Doesn't matter if Pintsize can't feel it, he's being systematically assaulted these days and hasn't even done anything that weird to "warrant" the punch. Jeph will probably address it though, Sam needs to learn.

In answer to the questions about shipping, the answer is no - Jeph doesn't like speculation about his characters having sexual involvements, he finds it creepy. If he's shown them expressing an interest, you can discuss that, but not any kind of fantasy scene (the forum almost got deleted due to incidents like that).

Aw, come on people, it's not like Marten didn't get punched by Faye semi-frequently at the beginning of the comic, sometimes even getting bruises. It may not be a good thing to do, but it's not necessary to report every case of it as assault.
Also, by that logic Pintsize would be swimming in a pool of sexual harassment-charges.

Pitsize's worst "criminal" act was semi-accidentally causing thousands in property damage to an insured cafe that apparently decided not to press charges (or possibly was wholly unable to since the robot rights act wasn't in force then) whereas May actively tried to embezzle millions and didn't seem to see the problem beforehand. All of Pintsize's other questionable activities are mostly related to being an asshole and collecting weird porn, neither of which are strictly illegal.

Just because someone is an AI doesn't give them the right to be asshole. Just because someone is not an AI doesn't give them the right to be asshole.

I think comedic effect is the only important thing here. One shouldn't take this too seriously. It really depends on Pintsize's attitude towards it too.

Pintsize might not be considered to have a maturity ranking of an adult therefore even now he can't be charged as a criminal.

Y'know, the more Jeph does the Robots Have Civil Rights Too thing, the harder it is to justify strips like this one...

If robots have equal rights, Sam's looking at juvie for assault.

Only if Pintsize presses charges.  He's been fairly chill so far considering.

That is, if he is even aware that he has legal recourse.

Somebody is gonna have to have a talk with Sam about how to respect AI's.
Sam's (http://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=2734) reaction is identical to Emily's (http://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=2340) when she first met Pintsize. What is the significance of this? Are Sam and Emily soulmates (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soulmate)?

I get the impression that in both those strips Pintsize had a tone of voice that screamed "pervert".  Respect goes both ways and Pintsize has shown that he doesn't respect people's boundaries.

Neither Samantha nor Emily look as if they are offended. Actually both punch Pintsize with a happy smile on their face.

Are the pores in a mil-spec nerf head filled with nerf gas?

I'd think that would be more Raven's thing (wherever she is).  I always thought that Cosette was just clumsy and unlucky, not daft.  Although, depending on how hard she hit her head, that may be a matter worthy of consideration.

I agree, this is not Emily's usual weirdness. But personal development is part of the QC timeline, the characters tend to improve over time (except Pintsize, perhaps). As from now on, Emily is Marten's loyal defender, trying to protect him from the others' merciless teasing. Emily has probably been a victim of teasing herself, and knows how it hurts. But I am afraid Emily is developing a crush on Marten. This cannot possibly end well.

Most likely it was a coloring slip but I have heard stories about people whose eyes change color with mood or light conditions.

By searching the Internet I found other people with similar claims. Probably the light conditions could affect how we perceive the eye colors and the blood pressure could affect the colors slightly but I didn't found any formal study in my short search.

My eyes are "the colour of an Irish bog".  Along with my somewhat pointed ears, when a child this led to my being thought to be a leprechaun.

Has it been conclusively  proven one way or another?   I mean you COULD be one...  just slightly taller than average for the species.

My eyes are consistently blue, but I wish they were a more unusual colour...like purple. Like a deep purple.

Full heterochromia is the way to go for interesting and unusual eyes.

Hedgie, nah, I want two purple eyes.

Blue eyes already are unusual, most of the world population have dark brown eyes.

If you want crazy eyes you can also get contacts.

My hands shake a little, and I'm very uncomfortable putting things in my eyes. Also I said more unusual.

Albinos and ocular albinos can have eyes that look purple under certain light conditions.

There is a procedure where they use laser to disrupt the pigment layer of the iris to turn brown eyes into blue. Maybe if they use it on you you can end up with an eye light enough to look violet under certain light conditions.

Ironically people with the common brown eyes could use this to get some fancy heterochromia and become more unusual than the blue eyed minority.

I wish my eyes would either stay put at a rich green or the lovely storm cloud grey I get now and then.

I wish I could wear contacts. I would love bright green or purple eyes. But I freak out big time whenever I try to put them in. I freak out looking at other people putting contacts in their eyes.... I used to have medium green eyes, but they've changed to just muddy brown as I got older.

Yeah, but then every time you needed eye surgery you'd have to pay for laser eye surgery.

Better late than never ....
What he needs is a nerf head that is more squishable.
Visco-elastic polymers would be the solution since they absorb a lot of energy without imparting much of it back to whatever collided with it in the first place.
Maybe this is the reason why both girls thought his head was of the squishy variety.
Pintsize lacks such a covering that could be deemed normal for a consumer version of his model type but is not standard issue on a military grade chasis.

Eyes? Mine are blue or bluish and I have on again off again contemplated contacts for cosplay but touching eyeballs freaks me right out even though I get no qualms with peeled grapes.
Now cybernetic eyes would require major surgery and such but the concept has the techno-geek in me squee just a bit with all the possibilities of machine / cyber vision.

I also can't stand the idea of putting something in my eye. I would like a contact lense with an iris, not for cosmetic reasons, but because it would improve my vision. A large part of my right iris is missing due to an accident when I was 10.

There are some prosthetic irises that seems to be much better than the ones we had some time ago. You should research a little and ask your doctor about it.
