As long as Emily doesn't join a snake-handling church, she'll probably be okay.

For the same reasons, one might feel inclined to suggest "Marten Azumanga (http://questionablecontent.wikia.com/wiki/Emily_Azuma) Daioh" (shortened "MAD") as a ship name.

(mod) While the posts so far have been okay in my eyes, I want to remind everyone that the author of the comic - and owner of this forum - is generally not comfortable with shipping, particularly if it goes into creepy territory.  Basically, before posting, ask yourself "Would Jeph want to bleach his eyes or brain because of what my post does to his characters", and if the answer is "no", you should be okay.(/mod)

Marten's an attractive dude (according to Cosette (http://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=1323) and Dora (http://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=75), at least). Emily's right in saying he's pretty nice, too.

Nice freshly scented ones are fine though.

And on other matters, I thought Emily's action was entirely appropriate. Maybe I'm old-fashioned, but such chivalry fully deserves a chaste kiss on the cheek.

Still, Jeph does have to troll the shippers, and it's also nice to see more of Emily as a person who doesn't just do "weird" things like enjoy banana smoothies from CoD and (off-screen) happily being on the receiving end of Momo's electronic self-defence ability.

Now Marten will try to understand what has happened in the most melodramatic way possible; however, there is no understanding Emily.  You just go with it!
The big question is if it is just a smooch, or if Emily is also grabbing Marten's ass with her left hand. Obviously, Marten has never considered a romantic relationship with Emily, and is completely taken by surprise. Knowing Emily, he might just consider it part of her usual weird ways without any deeper significance; but he might also start wondering if Emily really has a crush on him, and how he should respond.

Emily has shown affection towards Marten before (http://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=2320), but nobody thought it was significant because she was drunk. The"love letter" (http://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=2287) made Marten momentarily confused, but it was quickly resolved (perhaps the others that were invited did not get pink hearts on the envelope?).

Emily's only friends are through her library internship, as evident here (http://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=2298). Marten acts as a magnet for attracting girls with problems (Faye, Dora, Hanners, Marigold, Cosette, Emily, Claire), getting them friends and a social circle.

Tai (http://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=2216) and Faye (http://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=2217) have earlier discussed the possibility of Marten hooking up with one of the interns, where Marten dismissed the idea. He did not seem to have an immediate crush on either of the interns at the time. However, he was a bit intimate with Claire (http://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=2406) afterwards, and now Emily, but he did not take the iniative on either occasion (on the other hand, whenever does Marten take the initiative?).

My guess is that Marten is not really interested in a romantic relationship with Emily, and will try to handle it the same way he did with Claire. He will just try to act as normal towards Emily, and hope Emily is not making further advances. He is going to worry a lot about having to talk to Emily about his feelings for her.

By the looks of it, Emily's hands are clasped together. She's a bit too (for lack of a better word) simple to go for a butt-grab, IMO.

But then...I have a thing for the Asian ladies.  :parrot:

What indeed Martin.  Now, does he lose his mind thinking about that kiss as is typical Martin?

Or just go with it.

At any rate, them together would be hilarious in that Emily isn't your typical crazy like Dora (self-esteem issues) or Faye (daddy got shot issues).

She's just balls to the walls weird. But in a good way. In a sort of, she could be an axe-murderer, an alien, a weird vampire, or a anime character come to life.

Yes, and Marten can certainly tolerate the weirdness. The question really becomes if Marten has a thing for Emily. Please note the similarity to the Marigold/Angus situation (http://questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=1676).

I believe Marten is in a similar situation as Angus was. Marten has been nice to Emily, Emily develops a crush on Marten, but Marten is not interested in a romantic relationship. The End. Sad, but this is the way life sucks.

Talking about Angus: Has the 2 weeks (http://questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=2686) soon passed in the QC universe? I am still waiting...

Yes, I can totally see this happening. But fortunately, Jeph never does what we expect.

That said, what would be the point? Tai would involve Dora, Dora would involve Faye, and neither of them will be of any help. I think Marten would be wise to keep quiet about this, and instead try to resolve the issue by talking with Emily.

What if Marten talks to Claire about it? Although she isn't exactly who I'd go to for relationship advice, but I'd go to her before Tai, Dora, or Faye...

That could actually be really sad if she is interested in him, and he's completely oblivious to it. Especially if he says something that rules both Emily and Claire out.

I don't get why it's so difficult to keep up with the character spellings. I mean, this is a written/drawn medium, it's literally on the screen in front of you, it's not like just remembering a character from a movie.

Or an AI.

I don't see it at all. I think Marten might possibly awkwardly ask her if she is interested in him and explain that he isn't interested in her and also doesn't think he should date the interns, and she'll respond by saying "oh no, I didn't even think about that. I just like being your friend!" or something. He'll be incredibly embarrassed and she won't understand why.

There's a very small bit of evidence that Marten would be open to dating Emily. (http://questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=2287)  But it's hard to tell if he was actually disappointed that it wasn't a love letter, or if he was just embarrassed for confusing Emily's intentions.  Personally, I think it's the latter.

However, that strip also provides evidence that Emily is simply very open/affectionate with people in general.  In other words yes, Jeph is trolling the shit out of us right now.

Time will tell...

Tai (http://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=2216) and Faye (http://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=2217) have earlier discussed the possibility of Marten hooking up with one of the interns, where Marten dismissed the idea.

Veronica (http://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=2379) also explored the possibility of Claire hooking up with Marten.....thought it's unclear if she was serious or it was part of her emotional breakdown that was brought on by the wedding.

Maybe she is an experiment with an AI that doesn't know she is an AI or even an AI in a biological body.

I had a similar thought recently. What if her AI-related ignorance is part of some kind of double-blind? I can't put my finger on why, exactly, but I keep having the sneaking suspicion that she's an AI in a highly-realistic chassis. Jeph's AIs are as neurotic as everybody else in-comic, so it's not like she sticks out THAT much. Would also explain the spoken "smooch" with the kiss.

Speaking of the kiss: I'm betting it had no romantic intent whatsoever, in which case Marten will have spent the next several strips (and the awkward conversation with Emily that follows) agonizing over nothing, much as he had in the post-wedding situation with Claire.

Speaking of interns, what ever happened to Gabby? I think it's nearly a year since we've seen her in the comic. I mean, I know that's about 2 days in QC time, but...

I think the lack of interest in this question, is the answer. She's somewhat less interesting than Sara, who at least tasted good to some allosaurus.

But to be fair, Jeph just hasn't had any storylines for her yet. If she gets some, she may resurface. Otherwise, there's a hungry allosaurus out there.

Is this ok to say? Like, it shouldn't be different than saying "a German" or "an American", but for some reason using "Japanese" as a noun instead of an adjective seems...off. Maybe it just sounds weird because of the word ending? Putting "a" in front of a word that ends in "ese".

Maybe it's best that Marten avoids dating people inside of his social circle - which only represents a very small fraction of available ladies - and starts to seek romance elsewhere.

Almost all of the women he's surrounded himself with have "issues" of some variety because he is much more tolerant and not very judgmental.  He keeps himself surrounded with women like this, locked into platonic frustration and having to deal with all these awkward situations.  I mean, sure, they get along fine as friends, but I cannot see Marten dating anybody in his current social circle.

That was with some kinda vaporizer thingy.* Her smoking's been alluded to several times, but I'm pretty sure this is the first time it's been shown. The only other smoking I can think of is Hanners, but those were store-bought.

*There went my drug cred. Not like I particularly give a shit.

Are you saying that there are women without issues outside his circles? Maybe there is someone somewhere without any issues but the chance to find that person is absurdly tiny.

Well it's not just them having issues that's the problem.  It's that those issues have been prohibitive to a relationship, either specifically with Marten or with anybody in general.

Dora is very insecure due to her childhood, and while with Marten her insecurities about his "near-miss" with Faye is what ultimately caused them to break up.  And speaking of Faye, she couldn't date anybody for a long while because of her father killing himself.  She has a very big problem with fear of abandonment, and that's what kept her from dating Marten even when she thought that she wanted to.  She's with Angus now, and they have fantastic chemistry largely because he's provided a strong "Secure Base" that addresses Faye's fear of being abandoned.  If he moves away to the big city, it might become a problem yet again.

Hannelore is so afraid of physical contact that a relationship for her at all is still pretty much out of the question, although it seems she has been making some very slow progress on that front.

Claire is trans, and we haven't really gotten an idea about how she wants to handle her romantic life.  But regardless of that, when I see Marten and Claire interact they just seem so much like brother and sister to me.  Anything could happen, sure, but right now I'm not really seeing those two as a couple.

So yeah.  Maybe "issues" is not the right word.  Maybe incompatibility is what keeps him from being with any of his current lady friends (in my mind).  And yes, I know that most people have some sort of "issues".  I wasn't trying to imply otherwise, although I do think it's any given individual's responsibility to bring the issues down enough that they can maintain a romantic relationship, if it's something that they desire (such as Faye and Dora did with counseling).

Marten stands nothing to lose and a lot to gain by seeking romantic partnership outside of his current immediate circle.   One benefit to meeting women outside of school/work/friend circles is you get to explore far, far more options than you have if you only date inside of those circles.  You also have no worries about dating a certain person being "unethical" because you work with them or something.

The biggest benefit I see for him is taking some initiative, which seems to have been his biggest problem since the comic started - a lack of real direction or drive.  He doesn't need to become a full blown PUA, but right now (as has been said on the forums countless times), he's doing a ton of things for everybody else but nothing much for himself.

Maybe I'm reading Marten and Claire's interaction wrong, but I've seen that -- especially in the time since she came out to him -- more as a matter of respecting her boundaries than of treating her like a sister. I won't speculate as to any romantic interest on her part or his (for obvious reasons, though I have my suspicions), I just don't think that particular dynamic is because of his general pushover-ness.

To your latter points, A: I wonder if Marten might also benefit from therapy (or just a good, swift kick in the ass). B: Absent him finding that direction or drive, and without the will to do for himself what he's done for his friends, I think it's pretty much immaterial whether he's looking in his usual circle or outside it.

He has shown flashes of self-awareness and initiative, even if the former doesn't always take flight and the latter sometimes (as with the snakebite episode) comically backfires. What we haven't seen yet is both of those things together. Who knows? Maybe the current arc finds him learning and progressing a bit more. Everybody else's progressed to one degree or another... maybe it's finally his turn.

That is also a possibility, and you make a great point about the respect of boundaries he's displayed.  And I've also considered that if Claire were to be with anybody it'd probably be either with Marten or somebody like him.

He might just benefit from both.   I had a few sessions recently and to be honest it was about half "how does that make you feel?" and half swift kicks to the posterior (not literally of course).  I think they were helpful because I feel as though I've been more active in taking charge of my own happiness and the results are noticeable.

Very true.

Indeed.  Unfortunately, with any initiative there is often a risk involved.  It's far easier to allow things to "fall into place" than it is to put yourself out there, because life is crazy, scary and tiring enough as it is.

I wonder that too, and I think him possibly having Sam as a step-sister is a sign that his life is about to take a new, positive turn.

Maybe it's best that Marten avoids dating people inside of his social circle - which only represents a very small fraction of available ladies - and starts to seek romance elsewhere.
Well, I had some hopes when Tai dragged Marten to a party with her friends. The Delilah affair was not exactly a success, I doubt he will try again soon.

Claire must have serious problems. We have seen her take Ativan. From the Wikipedia description, this is seriously nasty stuff which would not be prescribed unless she has real problems.
It's actually not that nasty.  Sure, it's potentially addictive, but it bypasses the liver, and doesn't have any serious physical side-effects.  The only reason I stopped taking it for my anxiety (I had been on it for almost four years) is because it has such a short half-life that I got switched to Clonazepam (klonopin in the US), which although a stronger drug, lasts much longer, and isn't so "bursty" when it comes to its effects.  I guess I'm saying that although Claire might have anxiety issues, she's not on anything particularly bad, since Lorazepam is one of the safer benzodiazapines out there.

According to Wikipedia it causes anterograde amnesia. Meaning that you lose the ability to form new memories. For a time, I hope.

Rarely.  I've never had that side-effect, nor has anyone I have known.  Ambien, OTOH, has caused me to lose nights by sleep-walking.  I actually *have* read the PDR printout on the stuff, and the amnesia is extremely rare.  The most dangerous thing about Ativan, normally, is the potential for addiction/dependency if used regularly, over a long period of time, which is not to be ignored, but it's generally a "safe" drug if used only when needed.  It's great for if someone is having an acute anxiety attack, seizure, and also for patients going through alcohol withdrawl.  The anterograde amnesia would generally only happen with heavy use over a prolonged period, a problem which is exacerbated through its short half-life, compared to other drugs in the same family like Clonazepam and Diazepam (Klonopin/Valium for the US folks).   And it's 1000x safer than say, Xanax.

PS: Regarding Tai's "Actually, why would it be unethical?" in the last panel, do we know whether Marten's an actual manager, or if it was an informal promotion? If he's a manager, then yeah, that raises some ethical red flags. Many companies and organizations frown on employees dating regardless of the legal status, especially if they occupy different points in the hierarchy, because they'd rather not have a case of sexual harassment on their hands, or any appearance of impropriety. Just throwing that out there.

Leaving aside (for a moment) the actual problem of sexual harassment, I think that the problem stems in large part from the fact that, as a society, the US is litigious as hell. Some companies don't want the liability exposure that kind of situation could expose them to.

And some people (I include myself here, at least back when I wasn't married/self-employed) tend to avoid romantically involved work relationships just because of the high potential for drama if things went south.

Surely the solution to the problem of sexual harassment is to deal properly with instances of it, not to outright ban consensual and mutually-desired relationships? And the idea that someone would sue their company because of something in their relationship with a colleague is just bizarre to me.

I rarely even become friends with cow-orkers, much less date them.  Then again, I like to keep my personal life and my work life completely separate.  Even if I liked the person, I'd only really spend time with them out of work hours if they or I quit or got fired.  There is *one* occasion that I went out for drinks with a guy I worked with, and I only did so because I knew that even if we stopped enjoying each other's company, there would be no work drama.

I've worked in an office that was twice poisoned by an office romance that involved a supervisor and a subordinate. In both cases, the supervisor thought the rest of us didn't know, though it was comically obvious; the preferential assignments and scheduling were as subtle as a review on Bad Webcomics Wiki and twice as noxious.

None of my Canadian friends strike me as particularly apologetic; most of them are polite in the way that suggests you'd best be polite back. Then again, most of them crew tugboats and lake freighters, and aren't accustomed to putting up with much in the way of shit.

Reading a bit further in the Wikipedia article, this effect only occurs the first few times a patient takes the drug, and can be avoided by taking half the usual dose the first times. So it is not as bad as the description at the top of the page seems to indicate.

I think this is just Jeph honoring Canada Day, with an out-of-continuity strip. Apology Girl will vanish forever, which is probably for the best, considering her annoying sorryness. Also, July 4th will be out-of-continuity, resulting in an even slower progress than usual, but Jeph may have a surprise for us:

As someone who is from the True North, I have to admit to being guilty of this... I say "sorry" a lot, and I honestly don't even realize it most of the time unless somebody points it out to me.  It's like a verbal tick or something, but even though it's definitely more of a habit than necessarily an apology or admission of fault, it's not out of any sense of indifference to the situation itself - I can truthfully say that, at least in my own case, it does come from a genuine desire to be polite.

There are three types of contexts in which I know I will use the word sorry.... I know this because it's been pointed out often enough to me (when I'm in the USA and somebody says something, I usually joke about it and say it's because I'm Canadian), and I've analyzed the situations enough to isolate three specific categories, and how a person who is Canadian might be meaning the term.

The first type of "Sorry" is when I am genuinely admitting fault or being apologetic.  One can usually, from context, determine if I am meaning this kind of thing based on whether or not I actually have anything that I probably could be apologizing for.  If there's nothing there that makes any kind of logical sense, then it's probably one of the other two types.

The second type of "Sorry" occurs quite a lot in social or public situations, and I've noticed that I use it as kind of a synonym for "Excuse me", or else as a means to gain the attention of somebody.

The third type of "Sorry" also occurs a lot in social situations... and it's this one that I've noticed myself being guilty of.  Less of an apology or admission of any kind of fault, it is actually an expression of willingness to defer my position to anyone who might be around me.  One could think of it as a kind of pre-emptive apology of sorts... not because I necessarily expect to do something that I should be sorry for, but because if even the mere possibility might exist, I am only saying that I don't want to engage in such conflict, and will yield to others.

Sorry, I'm Canadian.

There are three types of contexts in which I know I will use the word sorry....

[ Snipped for brevity ]

Sorry, I'm Canadian.

If I can throw in a British perspective, this is exactly true for us. I say it a lot as well. While I was unaware of it as a cliched association with Canadians, there is a historic British influence on Canadian language and culture so it's unsurprising they've picked up this one. *

In British English, 'Sorry' should be just viewed as a word with multiple meanings. One, for example, would be if one is carrying an awkward load down a narrow corridor, and the way is blocked by two people conversing. Then 'Sorry' (said with the appropriate tone of voice) simply means 'Get the f*** out of the way, a******!'.  Automatically assuming the word's use implies politeness or meekness is possibly a mistake.

* I've been over semi-frequently, to snowboard and to visit relatives in Edmonton and Vancouver.  And what with the distinct North American setting, yet with the Queen's head on the money and the Union Jack flying over the Alberta legislature building, it sometimes feels like I'm walking around in some alternative-history story, where 200 years ago George Washington lost. I couldn't imagine moving to the US, but I could imagine moving to Canada, mainly because it would seem a little more familiar.

It is very difficult to compliment Faye's ass. Angus is in for some severe beating, unless he is very careful in his choice of words. But Angus avoided beating when complimenting Faye's tits (http://questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=2541), so I guess there is hope.

I guess we are in for some big changes regarding Faye and Angus. I really like Angus, so I will be really disappointed if he moves to NYC. Still, I guess it will take a couple of years (our time) before this will happen.

Meanwhile, here is a collection of ass types:
(_!_) = Normal Ass
(__!__) = Big Ass
(!) = Tight Ass
(_?_) = Dumb Ass
(_E=MC2_) = Smart Ass
(_$_) = Rich Ass
(_x_) = Kiss My Ass
(_X_) = Get Off My Ass

Here too. It quite often means: "Please say that again, because I didn't hear you, or was concentrating on something else and didn't take it in"

Angus' enthusiasm for this role in New York seems to have gone up several notches. And Faye is setting the bar fairly low for him; I doubt Angus will have any difficulty rising to her challenge.

"Cockdick"? If Faye's trying to talk like Yelling Bird, she needs a lot more practice...

You forgot goatse.

She's talking like Faye, who calls everyone Assbutt (or sometimes Buttass, I think). She likes being redundant.

Many people have waxed poetic about Faye's ass, but to be fair the same can be said for Sven's ass (http://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=1770). I wonder if this is a reason why the two of them got together in the first place? Should an Ass-Off be held to determine who's ass is prettiest?

Yeah I knew Faye wouldn't be happy about Angus maybe moving to NY, but I didn't expect her putting on the happy face until he left. Dora and the rest of the girls are in for it now. There may be one or more resignations from Coffee of Doom before Faye gets over her funk...
