Title: Band? Band!
Post by: Detachable Felix on 13 Jul 2014, 18:39
So, I figure there's a metric tonne of musical talent here in this thread. Who wants to be in a cross-continental musical collaboration?

Basically, I'd like your collective help in writing and recording a song. Possibly more than one song, if all goes well  :)

You know, kinda like Postal Service, but without the pretention.

Who's interested?

dude. fuck it, let's shoot for an EP. we all could use one more thing on the old resumé, and you're right, there's lots of us around who could throw down some tracks.

I can't record in very good quality is the thing so it would depend on what you were after.

I'm so in. Bass and acoustic guitar only tho. Garage Band collab?

Also let's make a thread for writing lyrics.

For you Gaz I'd probably be saying vox, from what I've heard of your music it's probably what comes through the clearest :)

Do we know any drummers/percussionists on the forum?

Do we want singing or rapping? :P And everything I record has a tiny bit of hiss but that'll be the mixer's problem...

There's some reasonably good tools for removing that kind of hiss in cooledit.

I'd like to participate if you can use me at all. Might inspire me to actually do more than one or two takes for once

Also my shit would be recorded in Audacity, is that going to be a problem?

As long as you export it as a .wav file, should be no problem

If no drummers sign up we'll just make a folk song or use a drum machine.

I know a drummer, but she's not a forumite :/

With a bit of reverb you can make the hydrogen standard drum machine samples sound pretty good.
Or just go the Eels/postal service/whatever route of doing electronic drums

Yeah fair point. I do have a Cajon and various hand percussion instruments, but it really depends on the style we're after.

So I suppose we should figure out how this is going to work - Should I create a private FB group where we can upload/share ideas?
(PM me and I'll send you a link to my profile :) )

I think that could work, but let's update this thread as we progress.

I'm fully expecting a thread somewhere called "Banned? Banned!", curating Gareth's posts.

I can record drums pretty easily. I just have to go to the bar where I work, set their drums up, and mic em. figuring out how to get you the stems, though... that's a tougher prospect.

WHATEVER HAPPENS, IF THERE ISN'T A METRONOME AND AT LEAST A 4-COUNT PRE-ROLL, I WILL UNSCREW YOUR HEADS AND SHIT DOWN ALL YOUR NECKS

As a pianist, I say fuck you to 15/8

Shall we do a cover first to get this rolling?

I'm down for that. Suggestions?

Since I can only record vocals in decent quality and volume I would like to take on all of the vocals, so ideally it needs to be something I can sing. Are we going to be able to get Pat's drums involved, LJ?

You'd have to ask Pat that.
I'll create a facebook group for us now, we can move more of this discussion there. If anyone else reading this wants to get involved, send me a PM and I'll add you in :)

As for me and drums, I have at least 3 solutions to that issue. We just gotta get on top of this shit.

I'm getting there, man. I been crazy busy, so recording that first keyboard track is taking wayyyy longer than I thought. Especially because in the original, the whole song slowly speeds up..

I'm in...once I get an instrument and remind myself how to play it again. So depends on when I get a better job :/

I do karaoke from time to time, so I guess I can sing if you don't want your singer to be, you know...good.
