Title: (Mostly) Civilized Civilizations
Post by: ChaoSera on 03 Oct 2014, 00:56
There has been a lot of Civilization talk in the 'What have you been playing recently?' thread, so I thought I'd make a dedicated topic for one of my favorite game series ever.

Anybody else excited for Beyond Earth? I can't wait for it to come out, only 3 weeks left now. Already told everybody they shouldn't expect to see much of me for a few days after it's out.

It looks really cool. I probably won't be buying it, since it's rather pricey (and my laptop can't run it), but what I've seen is very good.

It looks like civ v with a different skin tho.

Post by: ev4n on 03 Oct 2014, 08:54
I will almost certainly buy it sooner or later, but I might not right at release for the following reasons:
- I'm cheap
- Civ doesn't have the best reputation for being great at first release.  While this seems like a civ 5 port, it might take a while for the game to round out into a classic
- I haven't come close to plumbing the depths of EU4 yet.

Ayup. Just preordered.

Currently playing a game as the Mongolians on King Difficulty. It started out really well, found two ruins giving me technologies, but somewhere I must have taken a wrong turn because I'm really behind now. Got beaten to building a world wonder by one round twice. So frustrating.

Beyond Earth looks great. Probably not going to get it till the new year though... I honestly didn't pay for my copy of Civ V I wrote a review and some tactics articles for an online gaming magazine and they hooked me up with a free copy.

You desperately need the Brave New World expansion.

I've currently playing as Arabia on Prince difficulty. I'm doing pretty well with a culture/faith kind of build, but I'm stuck on a smallish continent with Russia, which has already wiped out the Japanese and is making eyes at all the city-states. I'm desperately trying to research Astronomy so I can escape and contact the rest of the world.

I just realised that I booked my brother's school holiday week off from work, and it's the week after Beyond Earth is out. :D

Post by: Zebediah on 09 Oct 2014, 12:58
I've just bought Civ V, and I haven't quite figured it out yet. I'm still on my first game so that isn't surprising. But my old skills from Civ III don't seem to transfer very well. (Yes, I skipped right over Civ IV - had too much else going on in my life at the  time it came out.)

Beyond Earth looks like an update of Alpha Centauri, which I always thought was the best entry in the Civ series, even though it technically wasn't in the series.  :-D

Sadly, the last time I tried civ 5 multiplayer, it was deeply, deeply flawed.

Lots of connectivity issues.  If they've fixed it, that would be great.

How so?

Lots of connectivity issues.  If they've fixed it, that would be great.
In my last few online games I didn't have any connectivity issues. Either way, it's easy to safe the game if somebody accidentally disconnects and then restart. It's a hassle, but it works.

I'm definetly down for a forum game. Could be hard to find a time where everybody can play, though.
Does everybody have both expansions? Because the game is way more fun with them.

There's a way to make gameplay asynchronous.

Title: Re: (Mostly) Civilized Civilizations
Post by: ChaoSera on 10 Oct 2014, 04:08
There's a way to make gameplay asynchronous.
But I think you still have to wait for everybody to finish their round. Approximately one round per day does not sound like much fun.
Title: Re: (Mostly) Civilized Civilizations
Post by: Masterpiece on 11 Oct 2014, 06:29
So is this still happening? I'm assuming we're going to play a relatively quick game, right?
Title: Re: (Mostly) Civilized Civilizations
Post by: ChaoSera on 12 Oct 2014, 04:06
Well I'm up for it, if we can find a time where everybody can play. I've looked into asynchronous gameplay but frankly, one round at a time with possibly only one round per day is kinda lame. It takes longer to start to game than what you'll be actually playing.

I'd like everybody who's interested in a game to make a quick post here so we'll see how many people are in and maybe figure out a schedule.

I'm interested!

I've made a kind of spreadsheet (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1RcYYOlxP-858BqqEbzd0I6fG4ZvGeFHNA_HCHr2I7D4/edit?usp=sharing) to help organize it. Add yourself and the times you think you'll be available - if you have a couple hours free in a spot (not necessarily the whole time!), put a Y.

Note that everything's in GMT, too.

Times added. So far it looks very much like it's gonna be on a Saturday or Sunday. Not very surprising but good to know. Also I would very much like to play with both expansion because they really add a lot of great mechanics to the game.

Wish I could play along with you guys, but weekends are actually when I'm least available.

But I think I'm starting to figure this game out. Still on my first game, but my Roman Empire has just conquered the Netherlands and I am now spreading my totally whacked-out version of Zoroastrianism to the rest of the world.

I don't get why people are whining about the pre-order stuff for Beyond Earth. There's two major camps, as far as I can see.

"Bawww, it's just a bunch of extra maps. Baawww!" It's also 25% off. If they don't want it, I'm sure they'll be happy to pay 10-15 quid extra after release, no?

"Bawww, people are getting extra stuff on launch. I can buy it now but I'll wait until it's inevitably on sale with the pre-order stuff included." I fail to see how this is any different form buying it now and them waiting a year to play it.

Then there are the people that I actually agree with, the ones that can't buy it now and will either have to wait for a bundle or buy the maps as DLC. There don't seem to be many of these.

There's a Steamworkshop CIV V mod called R.E.D for fighting WW2. Now recruiting players.

The big game today was a lot of fun! We need to switch from skype to something like Ventrillo though... a VOIP that isn't quite such a pain.

Also I need a better mic and head set, I know.

Title: Re: (Mostly) Civilized Civilizations
Post by: ev4n on 20 Oct 2014, 05:10
Sorry I couldn't join.  I guess Civ 5 multiplayer is just like that?

Pilchard, even at 25% off, that's more than I usually spend on games.  And Civ games have a horrible reputation for being not good at original launch.  I'm more than happy to wait, and I'm sure if I buy it in the end, I'll get it for more than 25% off.

Besides which, I'm far from done with EU4 at the moment, and it's a deeper game.
Title: Re: (Mostly) Civilized Civilizations
Post by: LeeC on 20 Oct 2014, 08:11
-I just cannot figure out EU4.  The interface is less intuitive than Victoria 2 (my favorite paradox game).  I tried playing China just to try and learn the ropes but it is just so different from what I'm used to with paradox games.  Same goes with Crusader kings.

-I've watches some beta plays (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WoBsWUnGXOQ) of Civ:BE (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nfXedaaMqdo) and it looks really fun.  I do not get the preorder 25% off of steam (that I can see) but I do plan to get it.  Thinking of waiting until after my birthday just in case I get it for Christmas or my B-day.  The tech tree being a web, turns not being 100s of years, alien hive mind intelligence instead of roving bands of barbarians, The constant "quests" and random decisions for your Civ, and the alien world itself just makes it seem just so amazing.  As one reviewer said "its not a Civ 5 expansion but seems more like a sequel."

-Yeah sorry couldn't play with you all Saturday.  Internet was down like I mentioned earlier.  Then when I went to go get groceries I got a text from my land lord that he wanted to show off the condo the next day.  So I spent a majority of the day cleaning the condo...only for him to cancel 10 minutes before they were to show up the next day.  I kind of have a wacky schedule, especially with Dr. Girlfriend back from Germany, but let me know if you guys try to do it again.  You all should have my steam name.

I haven't even seen Victoria 2, but really loved CK2, and am warming to EU4.  CK2, while I don't have as many hours logged as Civ 5, I think is the best strategy game I've ever played.  It's fun, and sometimes quite funny.

TB's review basically felt that if the sci-fi theme appealed sufficiently to you it was probably worth a purchase.  If not, the game mechanically wasn't different ENOUGH from civ 5 to warrant a purchase at this point.
Title: Re: (Mostly) Civilized Civilizations
Post by: LeeC on 24 Oct 2014, 11:33
honestly the sci-fi element is the reason I want the game.

just watched TB's review.  He seems just jilted that its not Alpha Centari.  I do agree that the faceless identities of the different factions is a downer.  The game looks fun but it may be one of those cases (like civ 5) where after some x-pacs it may flesh out the game better.  Honestly I still think I'll get it.

Still... potential OPTIONS

Mods I would love to see in Civ6:

Middle Earth (you get different elf, dwarf, human, orc, and even halfling civs)

New Civ: Brotherhood of Nod (Kane as leader) with Military and Religion focus. Unique unit Nod Light Infantry. Unique Building:Hand of Nod (acts like a shrine and Encampment). Also new resource called Tiberium that shows up in the modern age which can be used like uranium and oil.

Natural Disaster: Kaiju Attack. Can be triggered after Nuke attacks.
