Title: QC the Animated Show - Voice Cast
Post by: BenRG on 26 Nov 2014, 01:46
This emerged from the WCDT of 24-28/11/2014. Who do you have voicing the various characters in the show? Who would you like to voice them if Jeph were to get the enormous, life-changing break of the strip being turned into an animated TV show?

Some suggestions (mostly off the top of my head):

Marten Reed - Matt Damon (he just does such a good 'everyman' voice)
Faye Whitaker - Carrie Fisher
Dora Bianchi - Kaley Cuaco
Pintsize - Danny diVito
Hannelore Elicott-Chatham - Lisa Kudrow
Steve - Matt leBlanc
Veronica Vance-Reed - Michelle Phifer
Penny Gaines/Pizza Girl - Tara Strong (yes, it's important that the two characters have the same VA)
Claire Augustus - Ashleigh Ball

What are your ideas/preferences?

Faye Whitaker - Carrie Fisher

I am....stunned...by how perfectly that fits my mental "image" for Faye's voice.

Other than that...let's see...
I think Steve sounds like Jason Segel...
I know it's very un-original, but I can only hear Pintsize with the voice of Gir from Invader Zim...
I know it's probably due to the nerdy girl stereotype, but I hear Marigold as Mayim Bialik (Amy from The Big Bang Theory...although with a different delivery)
Can I use anime VAs? Because I hear Claire as an english version of Fumiko Orikasa's Rukia Kuchiki, from Bleach.

I can't quite pin down Marten's voice, though...

As long as we're blue-skying:

Steve - John Travolta
Clinton - Alex Trebek.
Clairemom - Florence Henderson.

And it's a shame Sam Kinison isn't still around to lead the BROS!

Marten     Mark Hamill

Claire        Molly Ringwald

No, Gilbert Gottfreid is Yelling Bird. Pintsize sounds more like Wallace Shawn.

Also, Shebly is Darren E. Burrows (Ed on Northern Exposure, for those of you who don't know him.) And Randy sounds exactly like Mickey Mouse.

William Shatner as the Shame Orb. Because Shatner.

Marten - Adam Pascal
Momo - Kristin Chenoweth

Veronica - Patti LuPone
Clairemom - Carol Burnett
Sven - John Barrowman
Clinton - Neil Patrick Harris
Dora - Judy Kuhn
Tai - Sarah Brightman
Claire - Felicia day
Henry Reed - Mandy Patinkin
Hannelore - Ellen Degeneris

No idea for Faye, Marigold Dale or the others.

edit: better choice for Tai.

Marten Reed - Steve Carell
Faye Whitaker -
Dora Bianchi - Laura Prepon
Pintsize - Jonah Hill (yes I am going for a theme with some characters)
Hannelore Elicott-Chatham - No idea
Steve - Seth Rogen
Veronica Vance-Reed - Anjelica Houston
Penny Gaines/Pizza Girl - I don't even remember who this is
Claire Augustus - Lacey Chabert

Also whoever that smut writing truck driver is, I want him to be voiced by Danny McBride.

Also Sven would be Robert Pattinson. I think he could get that vibe.

In fact, forget my suggestion of Christopher Lloyd earlier. John Ellicott-Chatham should be voiced by Gene Wilder.

Title: Re: QC the Animated Show - Voice Cast

Wilder? Then the script definitely needs a line about the correct pronunciation of "Hannelore." (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nxxSIX3fmmo#t=31) Preferably with thunder sound effects.

Title: Re: QC the Animated Show - Voice Cast
Post by: AprilArcus on 27 Nov 2014, 08:40
Also Sven would be Robert Pattinson. I think he could get that vibe.

This is correct.

I feel like Clinton and Claire should have identical vocal timbre - a reedy high tenor / contralto with lots of nasal resonance - but completely opposite delivery. Bee from Bee & Puppycat vs Mandark from Dexter's Laboratory, basically.

Wiley Wiggins (Dazed & Confused, Waking Life) is my perfect Marten.

Title: Re: QC the Animated Show - Voice Cast

The fun thing is that with enough sound samples you could use software like VOCALOID to voice the scripts and that means you can have ANYBODY for our characters voices.
Title: Re: QC the Animated Show - Voice Cast
Post by: osaka on 27 Nov 2014, 12:42
But why would we want to do that anyways. We're discussing an improbable scenario, and that means we don't have to settle for vocoders.

Although it could work for the bots.

From your choice of VA's, I have an inkling of a suspicion you might be a Brony...

To be fair, your choices of voices has been impeccable so far. I'm just seeing Applejack, Twilight and Discord in your picks.

I'm going to suggest Felicia Day for Hannelore, but I'm going to fall back on the law that the fastest way to get the right answer on the internet is to post the wrong one and wait for someone to correct you.

Someone try to top Felicia Day, so I can coo in approval.

Mel Blanc is all the voices!
Seriously, it's amazing how many different characters he's voiced. And that much of his best work was done for radio: Jack Benny show, Abbott & Costello and the eponymous Mel Blanc show.

Anyway, I'd like Wil Wheaton to do Marten's voice.
Veronica Reed - Courteney Cox
Faye - Kirsten Stewart
Angus - Robert Pattinson
Dora - Anna Torv
Tai - Jasika Nicole
Penelope - Jennifer Aniston
Hannelore - Dakota Fanning
Sven - Hugh Jackman

I didn't want to show ALL of my borderlands bias but Kirsten Stewart as Faye wouldn't ever cut it for me so I'm going to throw my choice for Faye now, which is Brina Palencia (Moxxi's voice). That would also take care of whenever Faye's wasted and starts talking southern (like Moxxi does in Borderlands as well).

Just struck me that in the British version, May would sound like Jesse Wallace as Kat Slater.

Pintsize - the young Michael Caine! It's too much of a cliche for him to sound like Baldrick

Momo would definitely be an American sounding voice, if only because i can't think of a British equivalent, unless it was Joanna Page from Gavin and Stacey... but she is really not a British character at all. Susan Sarandon as Janet Weiss? Zoe Deschanel! That would sell thousands of them, although probsbly not to Marigold

I'm imagining what it would be like to have Tara Strong voice our Raven. It's just incongruous enough that it might actually work...
Faye doesn't seem like she would have that voice to me, but I could see her voicing Penelope. Maybe Raven from TT was a bit more hoarse, but that's probably not her regular voice anyway. Otherwise, I think it might be a good fit.

Yeah, Faye's not deadpan enough for Tara Strong(Tara Strong's Raven anyway, she has range) or Aubrey Plaza.

Not current Faye anyway. Might work for 2cool4 contractions Faye from the early years of the comic. That Faye kinda sucked though.

Everyone is Tara Strong, unless otherwise stated.

Hannelore's mom: Kate Mulgrew, in a parody of Janeway in "Living Witness"
Claire and Clinton: Sharon Mann
Marten and Mortician's Ex: Michael Cera "I picture them with the same voice. They have similar smiles."
Faye: Debby Ryan "when disney is done with her and she becomes a has-been with an addiction problem"
Marten's mom: Cher
Hannelore: Jessica Boone "using the voice she used in Puni Puni Poemy"
Momo: Kyary Pamyu Pamyu "learning the lines phonetically" in her first body. New body: Ellen Mclain.
Winslow: auto-tuned Diego Mestanza.
Tai: If we could use dead people, Selena Quintanilla Perez. Since we can't, Penny Johnson Jerald.
Marigold: Belinda Carlisle
The mortician Steve dated for a while: Caitlin Doughty
Faye's sister: Annie Lennox
Dora: Erin Grey Van Oosbree, who played Yumi in the Puffy Amiyumi show
Pintsize: Whoever played the robot counterpart to Tuck in "My Life As A Teenage Robot: Escape From Cluster Prime"
Elliot: Patrick Stuart.

This list will be updated approximately whenever I care.

Because I am fabulous. Also, even if you did, you can't use her for this. Cher is the legally registered property of the gays. She's kind of like privately traded stock, owned exclusively by homosexuals. I can use her. You can't!

Who would you cast as the voice actors for QC characters if it were made into an animated series? I would love J.G. Quintel (Mordecai from Regluar Show) as Marten. Kristen Schaal (Mabel from Gravity Falls) is one of my favorites, so I'd like it if she were in the show, perhaps as Claire or Marigold, or maybe Tai. Another Kristen who's a great voice actress is Kristen Wiig (the girl from Despicable Me 2); I think she could play Hanners or Emily. I can see Melanie Lynskey (Beatrice from Over the Garden Wall) as early no-contractions Faye, but not current Faye. No idea about Dora.

What are your suggestions?

If we're going the Vocaloid route for Momo, we should better use Megurine Luka. At least she can speak English.

Momo - Megumi Hayashibara would be my first choice but I would not complain if either half of Puffy Amiyumi -  Ami Onuki, Yumi Yoshimura, were chosen instead.

As for the language thing, a little bit of extra voice training before hand should fix the Engrish rough spots that some people seem to have issues with.
Title: Re: QC the Animated Show - Voice Cast

Corpse Witch should be Constance Shulman. I always imagined her as Patti Mayonnaise gone bad.
Gwendolyne Christie, of course! As much as I love Helen Mirren, I'm growing to concede that Bubbles should probably be voiced by Gwendolyne. (Or Tilda Swinton, same kind of glacial brittle cut glass iEnglish accent that is a bit of a cliche but works very well for robots of Bubbles' personality type. I don't see her as a Kryten from Red Dwarf (i.e. comically anal-retentive!)

Edit:  Tilda, not "Tulsa" Swinton......hello AutoCorrect my old friend

Does anyone else hear Claire with Jennifer Darling's voice for Irma Langinstein and Barry Gordon's voice for Donatello from the old TMNT cartoon (late 80s early 90s)? (BTW, Mr. Gordon also voiced Bebop)

Allison Keith for Tai, she's got a history of voicing short cute characters.

He may not be available -- apparently he's just been cast as the voice of Scrooge McDuck. No, really! (http://tennantnews.blogspot.com/2016/12/david-tennant-cast-as-scrooge-mcduck-in.html) Check out the video to hear him sing a line of the show's theme song.

Not to my knowledge, but her voice and delivery for Seven of Nine would fit quite well.

Has anyone come up with a suggestion for Brun's voice yet?

I'd like to add another suggestion for Steve and Dora.

Steve- Crispin Freeman
Dora Bianchi - Mary Elizabeth McGlynn

If she has any accent, I would expect Brun to sound German, not British. Of course she may have been born here in America to German parents for all we know.

Sandi Toksvig is a Dane, whose family moved to the US, and got sent to a UK boarding school where she picked up her accent (she's not the only person in the UK to fake it).

That's the thing of it, though. Accents are all relative.

Well, with the exception of the Mid-Western cosmopolitan accent (what news anchors are often taught to mimic). People who grew up in Dallas, Texas tend to sound an awful lot like people who grew up in Wichita or Kansas City Kansas. The primary give away is typically word choice or colloquialisms. Well, unless you get someone like me who's picked up all sorts of things from all over the place. Like "spiffy" when something's good, "ai-ya" for exasperation, and "gewalt" (sp?) when I'm angry and frustrated.

EDIT: Now that I think of it, the first two examples are from cartoons; Big Guy and Rusty and Jackie Chan Adventures respectively. No idea how or where I picked up 'gewalt', but I say the 'g' with a voiced palato-alveolar sibilant (/ʒ/) for some reason. Probably because I'm usually clenching my jaw when I say it.

"Oy, gevalt!" is a Yiddish expression, sometimes said as just "Gevalt!", but it's pronounced with a hard 'g' -- I don't speak IPA, but I think you're saying you say it with a soft 'g'? So I don't know... maybe you got it from something you read without ever hearing it pronounced?

More details here (http://forward.com/articles/4093/oy-gevalt/).

I derailed this train so I'll get it back on track.
How about Cree Summer for the voice of Reneé?

And maybe Michaela Dietz for Brun? I know it'd be a fair sight different than her role as Amethyst, but let's not type-cast her.

What about live action casting?

Marten- Elijah Wood
Pintsize- Wallace Shawn
Faye- Melanie Lynsky
Dora- Laura Prepon
Hanners- Amy Poehler
Sven- Joel McHale
Marigold- Lena Dunham
Momo- Pamela Adlon
May- Maryke Hendrikse
Tai- Cameron Esposito
Steve- Jason Sudeikis
Ms. Reed- Mary Steenburgen
Raven- Kristen Schaal
Amir- Hari Kondabalu
Jim- Rob Lowe
Clinton- Vincent Kartheiser
Dale- Donald Glover
John Ellicott-Chatham- Alan Alda
Beatrice Chatham- January Jones
Claire- Ellen Page
Emily- Malin Akerman
Station- Alan Tudyk
Jimbo- Ben Affleck
Bubbles- Gwendoline Christie
Renee- Gabrielle Union
Elliot- Chris Pratt
Corpse Witch- Christina Hendricks

aaaaaand just for fun:

Punchbot- Jon Hamm

So, Melanie Lynsky is relatively unknown, but she would be absolutely perfect as Faye, and she just finished doing a movie for Netflix called I Don't Feel At Home in This World Anymore. It's pretty good, and it kinda reminds me of Jeph's writing: real world anxieties punctuated by occasional bizarre events.

Hannelore's actress got pregnant and there was no way they could spanner that into the show, so she's off on a sabbatical while a Georgian actress who hasn't had a good job in over a decade spits coffee all over her pyjamas when she receives an unexpected call at 2pm.

Any suggestions for Melon and Arthur?

Personally, I'm inclinded to suggest Holly Conrad (better known as Commander Holly or Strix from the Waffle Crew) for Melon. Not sure about Arthur, maybe Jason Douglas?

Oh, also, if I haven't suggested it yet, Kim Richards for May.

This thread was how I first discovered these forums existed, because I searched "Gilbert Gottfried yelling bird" to see if anyone else had that idea too.

Has anyone ever attempted a fan-made QC animated show or radio play? If anyone attempts something like that I'd want to audition for it... I think I could read for Dora or Brun

Good question.

I found 1 very short animation (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gZRiV24MHcI) from 8 years ago that features Pintsize, and 1 fan song (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L50P1qIlF8g).

Okay, I had an idea if QC was an animated series.

Bubbles--Aubrey Plaza (I don't know why, I just think it would work, I think she could bring a lot to the role)

Faye--Britt Robertson (after watching Girlboss, she definitely has the right amount of sass and comedic timing to voice Faye)

What does everyone think?
Title: Re: QC the Animated Show - Voice Cast
Post by: fayelovesbubbles on 05 May 2018, 16:36
After some thinking, yeah, probably not Aubrey Plaza.

I have a few more ideas for Bubbles. Though I do think Britt Robertson would be perfect for Faye.

-Lena Headey
-Portia de Rossi
-Katherine Heigl
-Kate Beckinsale

And I agree with the person who said Jerri Ryan. Her voice would work well.

Brun?

-Alia Shawkat

Hmm...I have to think of a few more.

Okay, so I'm actually imagining actors talking in their normal voices, not voice actors who literally voice act. Haha.

Bubbles:

Erica Durance
Olivia Munn

Okay, I am having difficulty coming up with more actresses who could voice Brun. She definitely doesn't have a squeaky, girly, cutesy voice, in my mind.

Dora: someone said Mary Elizabeth McGlynn. How about Mary Elizabeth Winstead, instead? : p

Tai: this is kind of a tough one...hmmm...maybe it's just because I just watched SNL but Aidy Bryant comes into my head. I think it could work.

Now I'm going to read all the comics using their voices in my head and seeing how it works. I am sticking with Britt Robertson for Faye.

I'm going to have to disagree with Cree Summer for Renee. That would be too weird, honestly. She's a tad overexposed and I don't think she belongs in the QC universe.

I think Nicole Byer would be perfect. She's SO funny. She would be awesome.

Disclaimer: I'm not agreeing or disagreeing with you - just throwing this out there.

The nice thing about animation is that you can have voice actors who might never work together otherwise. And I have watched animated shows with voice actors who I would never watch in a live action show, and they're just fine.

Besides, Cree Summer was Penny on Inspector Gadget! (OK, that's probably the only thing I've ever seen with her in it, but still... Gadget was a cyborg, kinda, so why shouldn't she, of all people, belong in the QC universe?)

I just feel like I've heard her voice absolutely everywhere to the point where it's time to bring in someone new. She has literally voiced every character for the last 20 years, it seems like. I exaggerate, but I kinda want a mix of comedians/actors, less so people like Billy West, for example, who have done tons and tons of voice work.

Yes, but can you really tell when it's Billy West? He voices nearly half the male cast of Futurama including scenes of 3 or 4 characters talking all of whom are voiced by him. Scott McNeil got to do the same thing for Beast Wars (Rattrap, Dinobot, Silverbolt, and Quickstrike in the good BW series).

Okay this "may" haha, no pun intended, sound a bit odd but although she's not technically an actress, I think Hayley Williams (of Paramore) would work for May.

This is what's kind of fun about this game. Imagining people who aren't voice actors voicing the characters.

And Krysten Ritter for Melon.

FWIW, I met a girl just a week ago who was born and raised in Michigan - about the same age as Brun, in fact. She's a waitress at a restaurant, so we had a chance to chat. She has an everyday American first name. She's never even been to Germany. However, because both of her parents moved here from Germany as adults, and they speak predominantly German in their home, she has a very heavy German accent herself.

Just a thought.

Do we know Brun's last name? That could give an indication of her heritage. A first name alone isn't conclusive... anyone could be named Brunhilde, not just German people.

The USA was largely settled by the Germans, so that kind of shoots that sentiment in the foot.
