Title: Time Travel Chess Variant
Post by: katsmeat on 03 Feb 2015, 08:16
Inspired by this....

Basically, when a player is making a move, they are allowed to opt instead to go back to a previous state of the game, say 10 moves previously, and alter a previous move they made.  Starting at the new, previous position, a computer plays 10 moves for both black and white (to avoid bias) to bring the game back to "the present". The game continues with state of the board presumably butterflied to something  quite different.

Any thoughts?

Diane Duane had a version of 'Four-Dimensional Chess' in her Star Trek 'Rihansu' quinology. In essence, any piece can 'time out' and vanish for a unique number of moves before returning to that square at a later point.

This can be used to lay a trap for the other player (forcing them to move an important piece into a spot controlled by or in taking position from a 'timed out' piece and then pouncing). However, the rules specify that a 'tele-frag' move where your piece times in on the same square as another piece removes both from the board. Additionally, a 'time in' is considered a separate normal move, so you have to wait an extra turn to move again as you already have a future move programmed in for a future point.
