Title: Disney cartoons and their live action remakes
Post by: LeeC on 04 Feb 2015, 08:43
Looks like Maleficient was popular enough to inspire Disney to remake Cinderella and Beauty and the Beast in live action.

Cinderella (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1661199/)
Lily James - Cinderella
Helena Bonham Carter - Fairy Godmother
Cate Blanchett - Lady Tremaine
Richard Madden - Prince Charming

Beauty and the Beast (http://www.fredericksburg.com/entertainment/tv_movies/emma-watson-to-star-in-live-action-beauty-and-the/article_2fba8878-df69-5d75-bb49-440e5f8a9fc3.html)
Emma Watson - Belle

Not sure how I feel about all this in a film era of remakes.

I am not against remakes. But this is making even me go 'seriously, more fucking remakes?'

I also really hate the loss of traditional animation. I know they don't make enough money and are time consuming, but honestly, as great as so many Pixar movies are, none of them has ever been quite as close to my heart or as REAL to me as hand-drawn animation has. I just prefer hand-drawn stuff.

Don't care. Hermione is going to be Belle. I am stupid excited about that.

I could care less what Walt Disney thinks anyways, he was kind of a dick.

Most people are kind of a dick.

But honestly, these are stories that have been retold for centuries, so honestly I don't think he'd care anyways.

Ehh, he wasn't as bad as the myths make him out to be.

That said, he'd probably think it was a shrewd business plan.

This fucking better be good. (http://www.comingsoon.net/movies/news/424759-walt-disney-pictures-sets-mulan-for-live-action-adaptation)

(Cautiously optimistic)

Disney needs to really look into doing things that are, I don't know, original. That list of remakes is overwhelming.

That's too much like hard work

To be fair they mostly did fairytales in the old days anyway, far from original really.

That does raise the question of whether or not a re-interpretation of a work (and perhaps how far one goes in changing it) is an original work of art rather than a remake.  Kinda like how Kurosawa's "Throne of Blood" is more than MacBeth with samurai.  A lot of the Disney classics are the same way, being different enough from the source material to qualify as something new instead of some simple cash cow.

Here is one vote for Ang Lee to direct Disney's live-action Mulan. To me, I think he has the right mindset to mix the adventure, the characters, the action and the romantic sub-plot.

Or they could just not bother, and you could watch the 2009 movie:

Okay, real talk...I just watched the Aladdin "remake" and I loved it. I would call it an adaptation rather than a remake. Sure it hits several of the same points the original does, but the more I watched it, the less I compared it to the original and just enjoyed this new version. I felt that Beauty and the Beats was kind of the opposite and I am trying to figure out why. I think Aladdin had its own style. It really sold you this new Agrabah, new characters, and more importantly, new character arcs! With B&B I didn't feel like the content was new enough to stand on its own. Sure they added a couple of twists, but Aladdin really just said "you know what, lets tell this story a different way." Sure it starts the same, ends the same, has similar songs, etc. The thing is, there was enough newness and great writing for that newness that it felt like it came into its own.

I couldn't really rank the remakes, but so far I really liked Aladdin, The Jungle Book, and (in a guilty pleasure kind of way) Cinderella. I liked Lady and the Tramp, but it did feel like a beat for beat repeat of the original with slightly changed/added dialog. Like it was a live action directors cut. Still liked it though.

Now that I see this, based on the trailers I think I'd actually would prefer the 2009 one.....

It's pretty good. Of course you have to buy that anyone would think that Zhou Wei was a man, but then the same problem applies to Liu Yifei too.

Huh.
I'm kind of surprised that nobody has brought up Disney metaphorically shooting themselves in the foot with their copyright dickery. Isn't that one of the biggest reasons for the remakes in the first place?

That's too much like hard work
Original material means taking risks. Hollywood seems to have forgotten how to do that.

I could care less what Walt Disney thinks anyways, he was kind of a dick.

The workers at the Orlando studio literally started calling it 'Mouschwitz' at one point.

Yes, and once informed that people would be sacked for doing so, they started calling it "Duckau".

I'd be curious to learn what people thought/think the parallel is between the Disney studios and Nazi concentration camps.

....There's several search results for it. Including a book about it called Fear and Loathing in Mouschwitz: A Nauseous Ride Through the Creation and Commodification of the American Dream. I wonder if it's on the public library's ebook app? Incidentally, the book happened during Michael Eisner's reign.

Trying to find when the term was coined is proving difficult, though.

...... Oof! That Rescue Rangers movie looks awful! And they don't even give an update on Gadget in the trailer despite showing Little Zipper. Is she the twist villain?
