Post by: signature on 22 Dec 2004, 12:22
not even like guilty pleasures because you do not feel guilty about them

Soul Coughing
Cake (except not the new one)
Bee Gees
Meat Puppets
Bran Van 3000 (except also not the latest/last one)

no one I know seems to dig these bands. Especially Soul Coughing, who are unjustly hated.

Anorexia Nervosa.  By taking one look at them, you'll understand why they don't get much respect.  However, I love their stuff.

As for jazz, I respect it a lot.  That stuff is pretty hard to play.

Blind Melon.  I love Blind Melon.  Their first album is seriously soooo good.  It is tragic they get the one-hit wonder notoriety, because really, the rest of that debut album is great.

The Divorce
The Kills
I got both of the above at my favorite local record store's going out of buisness sale, because they were really cheap and I liked the covers. I ended up loving both, but none of my friends will listen to them.

Poe
Scout You Devil

Robbie Williams
sometimes, I like a sappy love song. Sometimes, I like songs about hollywood and drugs.

Yellowcard & Simple Plan
You know, both groups can write some damn catchy songs.

I'll stop here, because my list could go on forever.

I fucking LOVE The Divorce. They've got a new one coming out in a few months. Oh man.

Edit: I'm going to nominate Rjd2 and Windir.

Rjd2 is a really awesome DJ who layers the soul on with a military-grade ladel.
www.rjd2site.com

Windir is a really fun viking metal band from Norway. They're pretty removed from the Opeth school of metal but they are really enjoyable. Unfortunately, their founder and lead vocalist died of exposure while hiking to his family's cabin up in the mountains, so they've broken up.  If you can find any of their stuff though, I highly recommend it.

Soul Coughing is one of my all time favorite bands.  I cannot say enough good things about them.  People who don't like them generally only heard "Circles".

RJD2 is actually pretty widely appreciated.  Rivalled only by DJ Shadow as far as instrumental hip-hop/breaks go.

As for me:  The Flashbulb, Joseph Nothing, and Bit_meddler.  All obscure idm.

I'd have to say...

Jarcrew - obscure Welsh band, kinda dancey-punky-weird
The Bronx - Excellent 50mph punk
Minus - Hardcore mob rejuvenated as a stomping hard rock/metal crew
Modey Lemon - fuzzed up moog rock for the acid-inclined
Salem - Excellent singer fronts post-hardcore band, probably
Silvertide - Classic revivalist 70s style rock

Not big on indie points, but bands I enjoy nonetheless

Allow me to destroy you now. Don't even step to the San Diego Hardcore Art Rock scene. The Locust and The Plot To Destroy The Eiffel Tower, though not paletteable at all times, own you, your soul, and your ancestors souls.

That being said, Im not too big into The Locust either.

props to those that dig the BV3 (their second album ruled as well, even if it didnt rule as hard as the first) and jackoffjill (check out jessika's new band, scarling. Beautifully dark and etheral stuff, not hard at all like joj's stuff. They've got an ep floating around soulseek).

ok, crap I listen to that no one else seems to:

-Human Waste Project/theStart - I would be Aimee Echo's whore any day of the week. I absolutely adore her voice. It is incredible.

-boilermaker
-The Sundays

i love rachel's!

i have a hard time getting anyone into matt pond pa... i just don't understand why everyone who hears them doesn't go out and buy all their albums!  don't make no damn sense.

i'm a jazz musician myself, so i'm surrounded by others of my kind.. so i don't have a problem finding people who dig jazz.  it's actually the other way around for me- most of the people i know, except for my roommate, don't listen to indie music.

Well, there's a lot of bands mentioned in this thread already that I recognized and have liked/loved or one reason or another:

The Meat Puppets ( named one of my RP characters "Cayenne" thinking of that song )
Blur ( before they became Elastica II. Ok, so after that too. Gotta love Blur. =P )
The Cranberries ( My friend was a Cranberries freak, so I got to get into them quite a bit )
Bowie ( is God. listen to the Labyrinth soundtrack for proof )
Blind Melon (yeah, their debut album was frickin' awesome. Don't know how many times I've sat down and played "No Rain" on acoustic. Funny how they thought their second album was going to do so well since they weren't stoned when they recorded it. It was a piece of crap. =P )

Here's some on my list:

Bikini Kill
The Breeders
Belly/Tanya Donelly
Juliana Hatfield
Veruca Salt
DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince ( just. can't. hate )
Harry Connick Jr
StarPimp ( anyone ever heard of them? I think they're originally from San Fran )
Bis
Sonic Youth ( guess don't really need to be mentioned, but there's so many Sonic Youth haters out there )
King Missle
Guitar Vader ( prolly my current most favorite band, but they got such a bad rep from the songs they released for Jet Set Radio and JSRF... listen to the album "From Dusk" and you'll understand why I adore them )

Prolly tons more I'm forgetting... just the ones that came to mind right now. Man, I love this forum.  I feel sort of a comraderie thing goin' on. XD

I knew this one girl way back that I had a crush on who was really into music and was starting off a band with her little sister and a friend. She'd make mix-tapes of all these unknown chick bands that were just so raw and personal. I caught wind of a lot of bands that way. Some of them don't even have albums, but I so wish that they did.

Oh, and I've heard of The Raincoats actually, but haven't heard a lot of their songs. Coincidentally, the reason why I've heard of 'em is also because of Kurt. =P

awesome! and yea it's because of him that their albums are even available. their records would have been long forgotten had he not cited them as a favourite band, which led to the release of all their albums on cd. the same thing happened with the vaselines. thank god for his good taste in music/god-like influence.

A different kind of love song by dick gaughan is a good album if your hands on it.

I totally saw them last year. And I also totally caught the drumstick that got thrown out. One show, and it was beaten to shit. Seriously, it was the most abused drumstick I've ever seen after one short show. They play fast.

Anyway, my friends do extremely well on the music front, but there are a few areas where I don't get much support. Mainly the IDM/Drill n Bass area.
I have a friend who loves IDM, and introduced me to most of Warp, but he refuses to listen to any Squarepusher except for Iambic 5 Poetry. In fact, he send me 'Come on my Selector' as a joke, as he thought it was the worst song ever. Fool. He even refused to see Squarepusher when he was playing at Glade festival. Watched Plaid, then sat in his tent for an hour or so until AFX came on. Double fool.
This lack of enthusiasm also stretches to Kid 606, 65daysofstatic and Venetian Snares.
I'm also failing to get any love for Explosions in the Sky, Themselves, or cLOUDDEAD.

When you need to ramp-up or cool-down from listening to deiselboy, you absolutely NEED to get Mocean Worker's "Mixed Emotional Features" album.

That is one of the bands I listen to that noone I know listens to.  He does a New York style DNB... when you hear it you will see what I mean (assuming you have spent a good amount of time in New York).  Dorn is my hero.

Also, tilt was a very very very incredible band. However, like most range&angts bands, they lost a lot of their steam after the first few albums. I still listen to "'Til It Kills", 10 years or so after I first heard it.

Idlewild
Biffy Clyro

I cannot praise these bands enough.
Also download These are just years by Idlewild now if you can. Its one of thier B-sides and one of my favourite songs of all time. It takes elements of thier old sound (louder and more forceful) and thier new tone (much more melodic).

Edit: Oh and Coheed and Cambria. Yes his voice is so very high but I like it

Ben Folds Five
Blur
The Who
Feeder- I saw them when the played their tiny homecoming gig in Bristol quite recently (I know the promoter and thus pulled a blag and got to see them soundcheck and hang out with them) they're phenomenal live and lovely guys, and I'll never understand anyone who says a bad word about them
The Darkness
Dave Matthews Band
Robbie Williams
Simple Plan (Only their first album, it holds some cool memories)
Vex Red
Snow Patrol
Interpol

And now for the ones no-one else has mentioned:
Fleetwood Mac
The Eagles (I don't know why, but both of these two have some weird stigmata and they've created some of my favourite music ever)
Matchbox 20
Goo Goo Dolls (always greeted either with sniggers or blank stares)

Werd.

I find it's funny people are throwing out Dave Matthews Band considering that they've sold a hogillion records and are continually one of the top touring acts in the country.  I love Dave and the boys (and I've got the concert collection to back it up) but you're not in the minority when you say you like 'em. ;)

For me it seems to depend on the circles I move in.  When I'm at shows it seems that everyone is all over it when I talk about Umphrey's McGee or Gov't Mule (to name two bands).  But out on the wide ineterweb as a whole quality bands like UM and the Mule just don't get the credit they deserve.

There's only one worth mentioning here:

Babybird

Although this might be just because I'm in love with Stephen Jones, people have only heard You're Gorgeous and forget that there's 10 years of tracks he wrote and recorded on a 4 track that reach indie-pop perfection.

Also, if you're wanting to get into it, don't bother with the best of, you need to go straight to this box set. (http://flakmag.com/music/babybird.html) That is gorgeous.

THey're out of Scotland... probably their most well-known album in the US was "Script for a Jester's Tear". Besides myself there's maybe 5 guys I know that also like him. If no one here has heard of them, then I will consider them truly lost.

Drop Kick Murphys is fun... and Kamper vanBeethoven.

Anorexia Nervosa.  By taking one look at them, you'll understand why they don't get much respect.  However, I love their stuff.

Goign back quite a bit, but I must say that Anorexia Nervosa is very good indeed. I think it's the fact they sing in French that makes it so good. They do indeed look very silly though. The only bands I can think of with more amusing photos are Theatres Des Vampires, Sopor Aeternus and Dimmu Borgir (when they had that guy in the top hat and opera cloak).

Also, Hreidmarrs other project apart from AN, Count Nosferatu Kommando, is  brilliant as well. Sort of wierd industrial/medieval/black metal stuff. You could almost dance to it.

As for me. Cradle of Filth. Don't care how much they sold out, the first three cds (including V Empire) were excellent, and they really didn't become BAD until Damnation and a Day. Also, Zombina and the Skeletones are criminally under-rated (They're utterly hilarious imo) as are Inkubus Sukkubus, pretty much the only decent proper goth rock band still around nowadays.

Skyclad (In my opinion the best and most original British band of the nineties in any genre) also deserve some credit on home soil. They made the top 40 in Greece once I think (About the time Martin Walkyier stopped writing songs about being on the dole I suspect).
