Title: WCDT 14th - 18th December 2015 (Strips 3111-3115)
Post by: BenRG on 13 Dec 2015, 12:55
Because, IMHO at least, the sky is the limit if Jeph has decided to start experimenting with character redesigns! BTW, I've voted for the return of anthromorphic Winslow and a totally weird relationship with May!

Seriously, I'm wondering if we might see the start of winter soon. So much is coming to an end. Faye is confronting her demons (through the prism of Bubbles' own demons). Hanners has reached a stable point in her self-discovery; Marten and Claire are a thing as are Clinton and Emily; the internships are ending and Emily is now working at CoD! Probably the only thing to address now is whether Claire will get a weekend job to help cover her costs. Maybe she'll end up working in the bookstore where Penny used to work?

That said, I've  just got the feeling that we're going to see Jeph moving the timeline along a bit. What could that mean? IMO, possibly as little as us getting the start of winter (say around October in-universe calendar) with us learning what winter fashions!Claire looks like.

It's barely fall if that. Considering Claire's been around 3 months expect winter in 1000 strips.

I like the idea of lips on Pintsize, mostly because I could never like that idea AS MUCH as Pintsize would. He'd be very aware how horrifying that would be.

To be clear, I would be actually upset if Jeph did that without it being a plot point. It would be horrible in almost all possible versions

Lips with thumbs, what would that mean for the world at large?

Or did you mean thumbs with lips? That would make for speedier eating, and a lot of thumb spit.

Ah. This both makes complete sense and means greater than four minutes to wait from the moment I am posting now. I am okay with the explanation and the pause, whatever it might be, specifically.

I was non-specific to the length of time greater than four minutes because I'm an artist(ish) myself, and I'm more than a tiny bit familiar with what fucking happens when you don't have a piece of work finished in time and you say "it should be finished in 'x' minutes."

It rarely is.

What happens is, it is usually finished in 'X+ Y' minutes.'

And I'm not gonna lie, I'm typing this out to spend time that otherwise would be spent doing jack shit while I wait for the new comic.

Marten and Claire are a thing as are Clinton and Emily

I'd want to see more evidence before making that judgement about Clinton and Emily. One weird date, and being engineered into getting left alone together in the park does not 'a thing' make. Especially as you never really know where you are with Emily.

New comic up! (http://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=3111)

Firstly, we learn that Tai is extremely frisky when she's happy and/or relieved (which shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone). Then we find out just for what she and Dora have been using the office at CoD over the months. This probably explains why Hannelore never goes in there without her HAZMAT suit on. Seriously, something tells me that it's going to very quickly become Penny's lair; Dora and Tai are just going to have to find somewhere else to do their hanky-panky! What's the bet that the shop is about to become better-organised than it has for years?

Actually, I do think that this is the first time we've seen the office at CoD. Several things catch my eye including flasks with poison labels. Either those are cleaning fluids for the machinery and possibly heavy-duty floor/bathroom cleaner or the rumours about how Faye treated customers she really didn't like are true!

Now... just why has what is either the vacation schedule or the duty rota got 'Oh God No' written on it?

Definitely the copy room at the library.

Now being completely serious, that was an expected turn of events, somewhat. I would like to answer your question at the end of the post with one of my own - are we sure it doesn't read "Oh COD no"? I think that'd be right up Dora's alley for the schedule.

Not much more exposition going on in the comic. It seems like there will be some dissertation going off-camera but we're not here to discuss that.

I am bored today, and I just keep coming back to look at today's comic.

I like it a lot, partially for aesthetic reasons, that diagonal paneling, as has been mentioned, but I think it's mostly because of Tai, being all pro-active in one way as a reward for Dora being all pro-active in an entirely different manner. That's something I can appreciate seeing in female characters. Nice counterpoint to the all-too-common 'women-don't-get-genuinely-horny' trope I see in most media. It's not the only time I've noticed this, I want to clarify, we've seen it in the comic plenty, I'm only pointing out that, in most media that I've absorbed, women always have some ulterior motive behind wanting physical intimacy. It's nice for that not to be here.

I'm taking a lot of words to say this. There has to be a better, simpler way of saying why I like this. Ugh.

I thought the cuteness was off the charts on this one.

... Yeah...

This.

New comic (http://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=3112) at roughly 10:50 GMT or 11:50 CET. Probably tells us when Jeph gets up when on vacation!

Onto the comic: Emily is... Emily, who likes things. She likes things a lot and she just naturally has the carefree air of a spree killer around her, as Faye once pointed out. Meanwhile, Hannelore is having the strange experience of having to be the voice of sanity and rationalism when she's normally the child-like enthusiastic one.

This idea may yet explode in Dora's face!

P.S.:
Anyone else notice that Emily's smile for the nice customer lady was spookily similar to Hannelore's old 'I don't really know how to smile' slasher grin from way back?

I knew this day would come, but I didnīt expect it to come so soon. But here it is. Already.
So what to do with it? Well, best way is to face the facts and get over it.

What day? The first day featuring Hannelore with the new lip design.

I revisited the comic maybe ten times today and looked at it again and again, trying to get a feel for the new look.
But sorry, I donīt get it.
I think Hanners looked much better with her old mouthform. She looks very different, like another person. Amazing what such a little difference in the character design can do.
Donīt get me wrong, it doesnīt look bad. Itīs just that she looked so incredibly cute without the lips. And that cuteness is kinda gone. She looks more serious, more grown up. Unlike herself.

Of cause I know that Hannelore was drawn with lips in the past. But I like the version of the last years better than the older strips too.

This is just my humble oppinion and Iīm in no position to critisize Jeph here. Itīs his comic, his protagonists and of cause his design. And Iīm sure Iīll get used to it soon. Itīs Hannelores character that counts and the character wonīt be affected by the way she is drawn (hopefully).
But for now Iīm a little bit sad that Jeph took his design in this direction.

What's the deal with gratuitously calling Penelope "Pen2"?  :?

Working at CoD means subjecting yourself to  a neverending parade of inventive nicknamery  (http://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=729)

Speaking of which, I wonder what Emily's will be?

I think that Jeph is really enjoying playing up Emily's 'She can only pretend to be one of us' side. She has a definite auteur-like air to her sometimes; she's able to say the words and dance the steps but you get the impression that she doesn't really understand them on a certain level.

Part of it is, of course, that she's just so genuinely sweet and nice that she can't really pull off unpleasant behaviour in a believable way. That won't stop her developing her own cult following at CoD, primarily because she far outstrips even Faye's ability to make up bizarre nicknames (remember the dogs (http://questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=2994)?)

The comic is up! And...Hanners looks hella creepy, or is that just me?

I'm rolling with it myself. Jeph is still trying to get used to giving all female characters full lips and he is struggling with them in certain shapes and angles.

Hannelore's hair is bothering me more than the lips. It looks like she has a bunch of blonde leaves stuck to her head. I can't imagine how you would make your hair look like that, let alone why you would want to... :psyduck:

Oh, wait, now I know who she's trying to look like! http://blog.retroplanet.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/sprout.jpg

But she'll have to dye her hair green to get the full effect.

I totally grok Emily. I was like that when young. Aspergic, very.
The parts of the brain to do with "common sense" are used for other things.

My bet is that with more socialisation, she'll pick up the basics though.

Or maybe I'm just not equally weird, but even more so. That hypothesis has some evidence for it too.

Well, the basement does need the arachnids removed before the roasting training can progress and Emily is the one most likely to move them to new accommodations without loss of limb. Human or Spider.
Down side would be that she may end up naming each and every one of them or train them to weave in colloquial Klingon..

Emily is moving at the speed of coffee, last observed in fiction when Philip J. Fry drank 100 coffee cups. During that state, as seen on that Futurama episode, it's not so much that your speed increases but rather the time slows dramatically, which not only allows for everything you do to be done faster in the eyes of people not inflicted with the "made of coffee" state but also to be infinitely aware of your surroundings (hence the statement "I CAN SEE FOREVER" that Emily utters).

Yes. I am overthinking this again. But you probably are too. That's why we're here, right?

Hannelore never felt comfortable enough to tell Dora about how hard her first few days were. Faye addressed this well; "It'll never get easier. You either get better or get fired" At the time.[1]. But none of the other employees felt comfortable telling her? The supposedly micromanaging Dora never figured it out? We're starting to border on willful ignorance.

Blah blah blah overanalysing blah.

However, the other thing that makes me more uncomfortable is that so far Emily seemed to be doing a lot better on her first day then any of the other recent hires[2] and they didn't get trashed so hard by management. Dora's immediate response to how hard she crashed on coffee was "So she sucks at this?". Why? Did it follow on from the customer service story? That wouldn't have been the worst customer service Coffee of Doom had that hour, let alone day, let alone week! And again, Faye was comparatively lenient. Emily was doing fine until Hannelore suggested she drink the shot. Like, we can't even say this was bad decision making on Emily's part!

Any argument replying to this with the words "Someone who can't handle coffee shouldn't work in a coffee shop" will immediately met with; "And yet the recovering alcoholic worked in with bourbon under the counter?" Unless Emily voluntarily starts abusing caffeine highs, this whole strip just hits me wrong. Maybe if we'd seen Emily fuck up harder than her supposed customer service incident?

On something I did like: Dora's lips worked. Hannelore's lack of lips worked. The dichotomy was subtle but really helped make the two characters distinctive from each other. I agree with this art decision.

[1] Well relative to the Pugnacious Peach, I s'pose. Though admittedly good advice to those suffering from depression?

[2] With the notable exception of Dale

The fourth entry on this list (http://io9.gizmodo.com/10-tv-episodes-that-everybody-pretends-never-happened-1657886672) explains the salamander thing. I've never watched Voyager and had no idea what to expect when googling "salamander episode never speak of this"  :psyduck:

I had no idea either, but I never could stand to watch much of Voyager.

This is an impression of Dora that I got from the earliest CoD-based strips, specifically when she was dragging her feet over hiring Penny... or anyone else (I seem to recall that Faye basically had to force her to take action). Coffee of Doom is her independence and a central part of her sense of self-identity. She isn't happy with anyone else being involved in any way. She certainly isn't happy with anyone being in a decision-making position there. She tolerated Faye and Raven but I really got the impression that there were days when she wasn't happy when she had to share the place with anyone else.

Basically, Coffee of Doom is Dora, to a certain extent; there are days and situations where no-one else is ever going to be unequivocally... welcome there, lest she may lose her complete control of this aspect of herself.

To be fair, neither Cosette nor Hanners spent at least three hours of their first day out of commission. For Emily to react that way on her first day does not bode well from a business sense.

But Dora isn't immediately letting Emily go, either. A lot of employers would, in this situation. Dora is giving Emily another day, training with someone who will have a completely different style of management than Hanners will. It should be interesting.

Another thought, Cosette and Hanners both made mistakes and such on their first day, but the mistakes were not huge. They also each showed that they at least had the social acumen to interact with people in a coffee shop. Emily does not seem to have that. Who knows, maybe Emily's fascinating new approach will bring in customers... More likely she will put customers off and other employees will constantly have to drop what they are doing to handle Emily.

We will see.

So Emily has a reaction that is completely out of her control and Dora gets pissed at her? If she drinks coffee again knowing this happens I could see getting frustrated but what the fuck, Dora?

Notice what she also said about Hannelore (to her face, by the way). As I've already posted above, CoD is both Dora's baby and a central part of her self-esteem and identity. I really think that she doesn't like sharing it with anyone. So, there is always a little subconscious bitterness and resentment at new faces taking a little bit of that one thing that is uniquely and absolutely Dora's place, even in such a benign way.

The girl has a dump-truck full of issues, quite frankly.

I'm thinking that Dora's reaction is less about Emily and more about Dora's tendency to assume the worst. She expects everything to blow up in her face all the time, so on hearing that Emily had a reaction to caffine and was high strung here reaction was 'Well, this idea sucked again.'  I'm... somewhat familiar with the feeling that no matter what you do, it's going to fail and how you can over-react to the least of setbacks, or automatically jump to the worst conclusion. Trust me, if that last one was an Olympic event... I would probably fail at it and break my leg in the process.

The salamander episode was a bad episode even by the standards of Voyager. You're lucky to have missed it.

Now, if only Voyager had done "A Year of Hell" as a season-long arc as originally intended, instead of just a two-part episode with an it-never-happened reset at the end... but that's a conversation for another thread.

So next week we'll see Penelope training Emily. Watching that unfold will probably be a lot like watching a horrible auto accident - you don't want to look, but can't turn away. Only hopefully funnier - Jeph could make a week's worth of strips out of that, each ending with poor Penny pulling more of her hair out. The girl may end up bald by next Friday (or Thursday, if Jeph decides to take the Christmas off).

Someone may lose their job in the fallout, though. Penny may quit out of sheer frustration ("If this is what training new employees is gonna be like, I'm outta here!!!"), or Emily may be fired based on Penny's report to Dora.

I still think Emily will fit in.  She's the kind of personality that suits CoD once she gets over her overenthusiasm and the fact she's never had an Espresso before.

Pretty much anything directly science or engineering related the new Treks somehow gets it all wrong.
The writers don't talk to or just ignore science for the story THEY want to tell and to hell with continuity or consistency.

I think thats why Bab5 or even Captain Power was much better story wise.

Dora is not looking pissed to me.

So Dora had a thought you disagree with, and... your reaction seems angrier than hers.

And Voyager was blessedly free of holodeck episodes and Q.

Fairhaven.

Q civil war.

Yeah.    I stopped watching because of the holodeck tripe and Q stuff.    For a show with a theme of "boldly going" they sure were into duplicating the same things over and over and over again.

Now DS9,  that was blessedly free of Q.    Sisko punched Q in the face and Q never came back.

Agreed.  Or anything to do with the big-eared money-grubbing capitalistic [edit] parodies of a well-known and often put-upon religious denomination.  (Ferengi).   It is a shame that is what they evolved into,  especially considering insiders involved in the show pretty much acknowledged they were mocking said folks.

In small doses they were great foils,  entire episodes... eh.        Interestingly enough they were intended by the TNG team to be the new "bad guys --" replacing the Romulans and Klingons as Baddie Of The Week.     Sure didn't turn out that way.

And another thing DS9 did to death was LETS EXPLORE MORE KLINGON CULTURE WITH ANOTHER EPISODE.    Great.   One or two is fine...   But holy moly we had more than enough chance to flesh out the Romulans...  or any number of cultures.    Lets have another Klingon Episode!   WHEEEE!.

Apparently though my opinion was in the minority as these were the things that drove the all-mighty ratings.

Close to the mark on that comment and unnecessary and unacceptable.

[EDIT:  Rephrased to avoid issues.  Apologies!]

I wonder, will Emily become the Banana Smoothie Meister of CoD and with The Hammer Of Smash be added to the arsenal?

And will it be a miniature version of Mjolnir?

"Whom soever holds this Hammer and is deemed worthy, has the power of Emily."
