Wednesdays or Thursdays comic had the little comment of "what you thought I was going to (or I should have) have a week of steve eating cereal
didn't he get married?
-
....How the hell did you go from Steve eating cereal to him being married?
He's not married, he's in a relationship with Cosette and I'm sure they're living together.
-
It's well-known that married people do not eat cereal. Oatmeal, sure, but no cereal.
-
Last I recall, Steve was talking about he and Cosette moving in together, but I don't recall hearing that they've actually done it yet.

I ate cereal when I was married. Of course, then I got divorced.... coincidence?

I came gliding into this thread all set to defend polyamory as a concept and I now have no idea what is going on.
OP; would you please enlighten us as to what you're referring to?
-
Polyamory? What, Steve/Cosette/Tortura?
...well. I'll be in my bunk.
-
I seem to recall a conversation between Tortura and Cosette some time back when she was visiting Steve, catching up and waxing nostalgic.
And zero jealousy or animosity passed between them beyond "Don't you dare hurt this wonderful man or I will come hurt you...." which speaks to still caring about Steve, in her own way. So they do have that much in common.
Cosette wasn't saying much though. It's hard to know what was in her head about Tortura. I don't think there was any indication that either of the ladies finds the other attractive or acceptable as potential relationship material. And Cosette may (or may not) be entirely terrified of Tortura. Or may want to use her as a reference when she applies for a teaching job later.
I would giggle nonstop at Cosette and Tortura going out to spend some time together doing things and getting to know each other. Maybe if they can trust each other enough, and like each other enough, this 'Steve' thing could be something they want to do together. Which IMO ought to terrify Steve way more than getting together with Tortura did.

I never got the impression that any of those three were at all interested in polyamory. Steve and Cosette seem to be happily monogamous, and Tortura seemed to be happy with the guy she was currently with (other than her perfectly sensible paranoia that the CIA was going to come along and try to use him against her).
I definitely got the impression that Cosette was entirely terrified of Tortura. It looked like she could barely squeak out an "o-okay" when Tortura threatened to feed her to the pigs. Can't say I blame her. Your boyfriend's ex shows up at your house, and you discover that she is - as Steve put it - "some crazy Russian chick with more scars than good sense", how would you react?
And to save everyone else looking them up, the relevant strips for all of this are 1350 (http://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=1350) & 1406 (http://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=1406)/1408 (http://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=1408)(Steve & Tortura), 1918 (http://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=1918)(Steve talks about Cosette moving in), 2629 (http://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=2629)(it appears Cosette has moved in), and 3428 (http://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=3428)(Tortura threatens Cosette). The only time we've seen Steve since then, he was, in fact, eating cereal (http://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=3692).
I feel like Jeph would have made a big deal out of it if Steve and Cosette got married, since Steve is one of Marten's best friends.

Thank you for finding the references! I had forgotten "I'll settle for something more attainable. Like ... EATING the MOON." I'm going to have to find occasion to use that one.

Cereal is Steve's primary partner.

He's not married, he's in a relationship with Cosette and I'm sure they're living together.
He and Cosette are in a dedicated relationship. Presuming the length of either time skip and the amount of time between to have been over 2 years (2 1/2-ish), Steve and Cosette would be common law married in most states.
Better question: how did someone jump to the idea of Steve being in a polyamorous marriage?
-
oatmeal is a cereal
fight me
Go drunk, Tova, you're home.
-
I had assumed that Steve must have seemed affectionate with someone other than his primary partner, and instead of considering that to be a writing error by Jeph I was going to headcanon it as them being poly!
-
Steve once "flirted" with Padma, but vehemently denied that he was flirting. Then Cosette was very upset when she found out about it. And Steve was very upset when he thought (incorrectly) that Cosette was flirting with Marten. To me, that makes it pretty clear that they are both monogamous (at least as clear as it can be when we hardly ever see them).

Actually there are only nine or ten states where you can currently establish a common law marriage now, according to this FindLaw article (https://family.findlaw.com/marriage/common-law-marriages-faq-s-what-states-recognize-common-law.html).
(Note that DC is included on the list. Does that make all the married politicians permanently in bed with lobbyists guilty of bigamy?)

It should, but they voted down that bill.

I think we'll get a poly couple soon (on screen, I know Tai was in such a relationships before) but I feel like Steve and Cosette aren't going to be it.
