So, I was reading through the archives, and noticed something. In 2262 (Faye and Angus still together, WAY before Bubbles was even introduced. This was friggin' 2012) Pintsize tells Faye "Leave him for a robot! A GIRL robot!"
So, did Jeph actually have that whole arc planned six years ago, or was it just an accidentally prescient throwaway line?
IS PINTSIZE SECRETLY GOD?
-
On his Twitter feed, Jeph said that he decided that he would write a romance between Faye and Bubbles at the time he was writing the "Bubbles' Lost Memory" that introduced SpookyBot. So, that was about two years before we saw the Fayebles arc.

Thanks, BenRG! I don't keep up with a ton of social media, because it just seems to result in endless screaming into the void. So, I'm gonna go with:
1. Pintsize is, in-universe, god or god-like.
2. Has thereby slipped the boundaries of his own universe, reaching unsettlingly phallic tentacles into our own realm, and planted the idea in Jeph's brain.
HAIL GOD-EMPEROR PINTSIZE!

Welcome, new person!

Naw. If it's apt to be considered the least bit transgressive by anyone, Pintsize will think of it. I shudder at what he has planned for the coffee grinder.
-
You're not half as worried as the coffee grinder is!

The great god Pintsize predicted Faye would have romance with an AI all the way back in #8...

It had become obvious it would happen sometime basically after the Spookybot incident. But they were on special terms straight away anyway, though. Faye cared about bubbles from the start, and there's a chance this might have happened without Spookybot.

I think that it is fair to say that, prior to the 'No matter what happens, always remember that I love you' moment between them just before Emily went brain-diving, Faye and Bubbles could easily have ended up best sister-friends forever. However, after that, it became clear that the two of them were getting a lot closer than just friends.

Personal bugbear. "Just Friends". I am closer to one of my friends than anyone I have ever dated.

See for me it's a bugbear because I bang some of my friends.

Don't bang the bugbears.

Don't bang the bugbears.
Not quite bugbears, but in the Pathfider game I'm in, we recently left a city where they had undead brothels (with or without control collar at the customer's request).
-
That sounds like a city I couldn’t leave quickly enough.
-
I like that Jeph didn't know they would be lovers until quite a long time after they met.
So it could have gone either way...but I'm really glad it went how it did!

Personally, and with the benefit of hindsight, I felt it seemed a done deal when the brick wall was punched. It was a marker that if Faye was to get close enough to help Bubbles in any way, it would require a level of commitment that meant there could be no turning back.
And Faye's not the type to back down from a direct challenge.
One does not make that level of commitment lightly. They may both have been oblivious to the end game, but it was always a possible, and even likely path.

I wouldn't necessarily say likely, but definetly possible. I think, deep down, Faye had always seen the broken person Bubbles was. Alone, not necessarily frightened, but in desperate need of a friend and some kind of fresh start, just like Faye after her dad's suicide. Faye may just not have realised she kinda knew.
At some point it had become obvious they'd at least be besties. Kijda nice thing developmentwise is, that Faye wanted to make it work, and threats of violence were never a viable solution (Faye admitted it quite late though [my archive-fu is still a little fledgling, otherwise I'd link it]).
-
That level of commitment is something we've seen between Marten and Faye but have any of the other romantic couples reached the same level?

That could have been her head, you ass! :-P
