I was wondering about how long "permanent" marker could be expected to last on a robot chassis.

Wonder if Swordsmary is a hipster who likes 80s sunglasses or if her optics are similar to Geordi LaFarge's VISOR.

"Hey Bubbs?  Do we have a laser?"  Faye is warming to the idea.

Wonder if Swordsmary is a hipster who likes 80s sunglasses or if her optics are similar to Geordi LaFarge's VISOR.
The same question crossed my mind.  Does the thing have a Cylon-style scanning blip?

To me, panel 3 proves that Swordsmary is a very average and middle-of-the-road being who desperately needs to be seen as hip and/or edgy. For some reason, I think that she will get on very well with Claire.

Meanwhile, congratulations to Sam for thinking ahead about how to make her ouvre more permanent!

Wonder if Swordsmary is a hipster who likes 80s sunglasses or if her optics are similar to Geordi LaFarge's VISOR.

Why can't it be both? A different optical sensor array chosen for aesthetic reasons?

Probably getting shoulder wings, then.  The trapped psyche's need to fly, and all that.

I like the notion of impermanence being the cool aspect of robot tattoos, when their bodies don't change (other than deterioration or accidents).  It's the conceptual opposite of the human notion, a permanent mark on a changing body.

You could always just lacquer over it, too, but lasers would be more fun.

One wonders how skin sensitivity works and if it varies among robots. In armor I assume Bubbles has limited sensory imput, while out of it more. And one wonders if lasers would sting...

Part of why I enjoy my tattoos, and also kind of had to get used to, is that they'll always be a snapshot of myself at the time I got them. Anecdotally, two big reasons people have told me they won't get a tattoo is they don't know if there's anything they like enough to have permanently on them. That's understandable but also makes me think of this comic (https://tapas.io/episode/175152).

The second reason is pain.

I doubt AIs feel pain like humans do, but getting something lasered into your skin just sounds terrifying (both in concept, and I imagine in action). Even if it didn't hurt, I'd imagine there's a large mental element, like Roko having sensitive feet (https://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=3567). I get the appeal a lot of having something semi-permanent, able to be unique to you and is very comfortable to get. Plus it looks cool.  8-)

You know, I gotta say, I am really digging that third panel.  I love the way Faye looks back (down-panel) to ask Bubs something, and we get and off-panel answer from the bottom perspective, instead of the usual left or right.  I can honestly say I've never seen that before (not counting when the reply is coming from someone in the scene but too short to be in panel, like Pintsize), not in comics of this format anyways.  May have seen it in some mainstream comics like Marvel or DC, but I couldn't say for sure.

That was my reason for the longest time. But since two or three years ago I have at least a couple in mind that I might like to get.

Now the main reason I don't have them is not pain, but that I don't really have the disposable income to get them. I'm told a decent-sized one, like about the size of my palm, would set me back around a Ben.

Yes, Jeph said once that they don't ("they're computers").

Without some kind of damage sensors they'd be as vulnerable and miserable as people who have no pain perception. The input from the damage sensors could be emotionally neutral I suppose.

I find it interesting to read a discussion on the reasons to not get a tattoo because I don't have reasons. I just ... don't want one. I've never felt the slightest interest. I guess I can see the appeal, though. It's just not for me.

If I had to give a reason, I'd say that it's because they look kind of tatty (pun unintended) when they get old, as great as they can look when they are brand new. But that's more rationalisation than reason.

Anyway, Swordsmary's defense of sprays is kind of similar to the reasons I like my graphic designs on t-shirts. I don't really need to have a public reminder of the space I was in as a teenager.

Pretty sure it's just a random joke and not meant to refer to an 'actual' haircut favored by "bi-sexuals". As, of course, there's no such thing.  :-)

That style of haircut has been associated with being bisexual due to it appearing on several bisexual characters. Like... at least four of them   :-P. Max from Life is Strange and Korra from The Legend of Korra are two examples I can recall. Ruth from Dumbing of Age is another example, but I think that was done as a homage to the meme.

Kelsey Darragh from Buzzfeed has been rocking the bisexual bob for a while now. Judging from the engagement videos I’ve seen from her and Hannah Hart, so has Ella Mielniczenko.

On the other hand, my doctor had it too last time I saw her, and as far as I know she’s gay.

I have to say that I preferred Bubbles with long hair. Actually I prefer most of the female characters with long hair with the exception of Tai and Melon, neither of whom I can imagine going long. Still, I know about Jeph having a kink for ladies' necks so this doesn't surprise me.

Artistic choices aside, I find myself wondering just what sort of parties Bubbles went to in the army. I mean, I know that military folk can be rough-tough but I would have thought that EOD as a party trick is suggestive of that bit in Aliens when Bishop does the 'knife between the fingers' trick with Hudson. Was it being the life and soul of the party or was it being a performing monkey? We'll probably never know.

Just looking in panel 3, I suddenly realise that Bubbles has changed so much from her introduction as to be nearly a completely different character.

I agree with you about Bubs and long hair.
Also, I don't think Faye ever had actually long. Maybe in the beginning, like the very early days but IIRC the redraws gave her shorter hair. so that's somewhat up for debate.

The only time we've seen Faye with long hair was in a time-skip sequence where we see how Faye's aesthetic changed as she was working for Corpse Witch. I kind of fell in love with one of the panels where she has her long hair in pigtails. What can I say, the idea of Faye choosing a cute aesthetic was strange enough that it's stuck in my mind ever since!

While the comic works great as a gag, one might question how Faye could possibly not be aware that they have several lasers.....I mean, she and Bubbles are the owners after all, so one would assume they both are well aware of the equipment they possess....

Can't blame Corpse Witch for everything.  Bubbles had a lot of problems after leaving the military which Corpse Witch exploited, but Bubbles wanted to be alone and all she did was encourage that.

That's happened with a few characters - like Hannelore, and to a lesser degree, Brun. I think it's just an effect of Jeph still getting a sense of who the character is as he works them into the story.

And by change, it is as far as I can recall, someone correct me please, he has chopped those long locks pretty much consistently.
I am surprised he hasn't gone full brush-cut yet.

Yes I have long hair. [ponytail at work - it tucks under a bouffant easier that way]
Yes I was made to cut it to collar length for a certain Org back in college.
Yes I let it grow out again.
Yes I have people bug me to cut it using all sorts of inane reasoning.
No it is not waist length anymore.
Yes I like long hair in others if kept well groomed.

This is a joke that's been around a while.  Apparently, someone pointed out once that the hair Marceline from Adventure Time has in a flashback to when she was still friends with Princess Bubblegum (one of the writers said once that they would have been dating in those days if not for the international market, but claims it was a joke) looked a lot like the hair Korra has in the fourth season of, er, Legend of Korra, in which she enters into a romantic relationship with a female ally (they don't kiss, or use words like "dating" or "girlfriend," because 2014 was a different time, but the writers are weirdly defensive about it, saying that if you didn't recognize it as romantic you're "steeped in heteronormativity"), and, well, memers gonna meme.

Jeph REALLY has a thing about short hair.

Either that or he really has a thing about long hair, but it's so much work to draw that he finally decides, "Screw this, I'm chopping it."

Although to be fair, he does kind of have a character-driven reason for doing it this time.

I don't oppose people wearing ink, but there are 'way more people wearing ink than people who wear ink well.  I don't think I'd be part of the latter group.

So, basically, Bubbles has a superpower and can permanently change her lovers' hairstyle? Is that what Jeph is saying here? :-P

This aside, I notice that, yes, they've started to receive Punchbot's replacement parts. That's the shoulder joint that Bubbles is playing with there! I wonder what kind of over-optimised monstrosity that Bubbles is planning for him, given that she seems to be determined to build him a 'permanent cure' for his 'punch stuff and break himself' issue?

Regarding poll: I am the obe for less drama and more antics and interesting thoughts.

I love todays! (Hey, Bubs? Do we have a laser? Several!)

While the comic works great as a gag, one might question how Faye could possibly not be aware that they have several lasers.....I mean, she and Bubbles are the owners after all, so one would assume they both are well aware of the equipment they possess....

I noticed many people do not realise they have laser equipment in their house.  People think of laser beams as high power tools for cutting and welding. Always fun to remind them: do you have a cd player? Optical cable perhaps? A laser-pointer?

Bubbles new hair style looks like the one she had in the beginning, but still totally different. In a way less structured, less... neat, more chaotic. to me, that somewhat means she's still the same person, but she approaches life differently now, less controlled in specific.

Also, I love the fact that Bubs keeps making Faye blush HARD quite often. Faye, of all people. Faye the indifferent. "I'm nothing but snark" faye. Faye the sasspool of doom. Fleshy Punchbot.

Right, of course, but in this case it was specifically about having a laser capable of imprinting a design into metal. Having that kind of laser is something Faye should really be aware of ;)

When I was in grad school we had a CO2 laser. There was a story passed down from the earlier grad students about the time my advisor got his arm in the beam. Instead of pulling his arm up, so the beam would run perpendicular to his arm, he pulled it back, so the beam went down his arm and across his hand...

Then there was the time when we were trying to get an optical dipole trap using this laser and some in-vacuum zinc selenide lenses. The conversation that day went as follows:
Me: "Um, is that lens supposed to be glowing?"
Other grad student: "It's probably just burning some crap off of it. Turn the laser up."
The 'crap' turned out to be the anti-reflection coating...  :psyduck:

There is a whole story being told in Bubbles's facial expression in panel 2 of today's strip.

When Bubbles first met Sam, I get the impression that she didn't get on terribly well with her; maybe it wasn't being used to kids, or at least ones as hyperactive and daring as Sam is. However, her happy little smile and relaxed expression really suggest to me that she's now finding Sam and her interactions with Faye, very cute.

I also wonder if Bubbles is thinking: "She'll make a wonderful mother one day!"

Oh, and Sam? How you do a cool pegasus is like this:

But that's kind of the point, she is impulsive. Too impulsive in fact.

Sam might forget that its not her business and that she's a guest of Faye and Bubbles, to the point where she might act like its her own private area and not, as it is, a workshop where two people are trying to run a business.

That or Sam will end up taking away customers from Faye and Bubbles or something to that effect.

Sam will cross a line exactly once.  Bubbles will assume her infantry NCO aspect and speak to her.  Sam will stammer out, "M-M-Ma'am, YES MA'AM!"  Unseen by Sam, Bubbles will subtly wink at Fayr.  Nothing further will need to be said and it will never happen again.

Bubbles doesn't fool me; her posture in panel 3 is too practised and calculated. Either she's testing to see how Faye reacts to her doing heavy work whilst lightly clad or she's practising for her audition for the lead role in the rumoured The Evil Dead reboot movie. I'd heard that the producers had decided that chainsaws were too old school and were looking for a new gimmick!

Oh, and Bubbles has no navel confirmed. There's just a join between her abdominals.

Seriously, I suspect that Bubbles keeps the concrete saw around as a time waster detector. If there appears to be no physical cause for her subject's complaint, she says 'I need to go in' and pulls out the saw. If the subject is then miraculously cured, she knows that there is no physical cause to find! It's an old sugeon's trick going back centuries!

Looks like Stihl's Cutquick line.  Often found on fire trucks and rescue rigs.  I've known more than a couple chainsaw artists who can turn a stump in the yard into a large critter- bears are a local favorite - but I don't know of anyone using a disk blade to sculpt stuff.

But, this is Bubbles.  I reckon she can get at least as much detail with that as I can with a Dremel.

To test Faye's Reaction? I think it was more of a subtle try to scare/startle Sam, but it didn't work out. Sam seems to be attracted to the dangerous things, like snakes and gasoline powered rock cutters.

Definitely the former and I'm wondering if Sam will twig onto the fact that her best adult friend and her giant robot lady room mate are in a relationship. It might lead to an interesting conversation between Sam and Momo about how common human-AI relationships are and what it's like when humans and synthetics 'smooch'.

And she knew it would get a reaction out of Faye. She’s multitasking. :D

It doesn't explain her shorts changing as well, they aren't loose. If we don't get an explanation on Monday or Tuesday it smells a lot like Jeph just forgot what she was wearing.

And why change into something that exposes more skin when you are using what is essentially a large grinder? Wouldn't you want to wear something that covers more skin instead?

Cover up when using power tools! I learned that the hard way a long, long time ago (still in this galaxy though).

Using an angle grinder to remove risers and sprue's from a bronze statue, the small sparks hitting my hand did not really hurt, so I worked without gloves (I was more or less using the grinder as a sculpting tool, and wanted maximum control). In the evening I had a very serious 'sunburn' from the back of my hand up to my elbow, and 'tight skin' lasted for several days.

Also, when did Bubbles change clothes? right after cutting her hair? Admittedly, this may be better work attire, especially if you want to operate a (fast) rotating machine - no loose clothing or hair.

My guess is she had the sport bra and bike shorts under her previous outfit.

Sounds sound. I also agree with the "not getting oil and other (robotic) bodily fluids all over my new clothes". Interestingly the red bodysuit she kept wearing seems to be mostly gone now, or only as PJs.

Faye managed to get Bubbles out of every shell so far. Only thing she hasn't done is opening her up for repairs and stuff, but Bubbles may be too sturdy amd used to do "field stripping" and basic maintenance all by herself.

Oh, she was using that concrete cutter to do the repairs.  I thought the cutter was what she was repairing.

I thought she was repairing the concrete cutter, but it belongs to Union Robotics, not to a customer.

There's no problem that can't be solved with an angle grinder.

Bubbles really looks badass with that grinder in her hands. And sexy.

When all you have is an angle grinder, everything starts to look like an angle.

When caught in a zombie outbreak, the angle grinder is far superior to the chainsaw, which gets gunked up very quickly.

When loose clothing (protective leathers aren't loose and billowy) gets caught in a power tool, it can result in injury or death to the human operator.  Or if Buggbbles is operating it it would damage or total the tool.  A low end one of those is damn near $1K so she doesn't want it getting trashed, and Bubbs takes good care of her equipment.  Remember, in the Army she was equipment herself.

Amateurs go with man portable equipment. Pros go the brush cutter route.
When I say brush cutter, I mean the caterpillar unit that treats small trees and slow moving vermin as brush. It also mulches and turns over the topsoil.

As for Swordmary .. I get deja vous all over again. She reminds me of an online acquaintance from ages past, early WWW chat boards, who used the online handle swordy and she had a thing for tattoos and retro accesories. Nah, couldn't be based on her... or could it? Stranger things have happened.
