Here's yer thread. Mods can add a poll, as I'm just waking up right now.
-
Oh good. I wasn't the only one who was going to do that.
Finally thought of a poll though*: What's the worst part about summer?
- the heat
- the humidity
- the tourists
- the drought (weather)
- the games drought
- the noise (damned cicadas)
EDIT: *Which is why I finally hopped on the forums.
-
Comic!
...proof that Sven is, indeed, a hipster?
-
Either that or they've both found out they have an amputation fetish... :psyduck: :psyduck: :psyduck: :psyduck:
(we really need a vomiting or silent screaming emoji)
-
With that shifty-looking person in there, I think that May is fucked, and not in the fun way.
-
I laughed too.
-
There's a part of me that's wondering what an "adult buurito" is (especially the "adult" part). But long experience has taught me that no, I really don't want to know.
-
An adult burrito is a burro.
-
On the note of the poll, I rather like this page from Paranatural (http://www.paranatural.net/comic/chapter-4-page-89) discussing 'the greater good'. Be wary of what is claimed to be the greater good.
Also, here's a reading of said page (https://soundcloud.com/user-974883694/paranatural-chapter-4-page-89).
EDIT: I suppose it's more of a 'rant' than a 'discussion', but it was still fun to voice. I'm going to have to have another go at that now that I've a bit more experience with VA.

May is so fired, even in spite of Roko's bluff on the boss. Sven will pay for the losses, but the boss will 86* him, too.
*To eject and ban from the premises, for non-USAians. No one knows for sure where the expression came from, but I suspect it was a section number in some town's municipal code.

At least in my part of the USA, to 86 something means it's off the menu/ you ran out/ remove from the menu. To 86 a person is a euphemism for killing them ...
-
Is it just me, or is this quite possibly Jeph's best strip ever?
So much happening, yet so little happens.

"The greater good."
"SHUT IT!" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5u8vd_YNbTw)
-
Faye: "Your leg fell off HOW?!"
May: "SHUT UP and fix it."
-
Yeah, May is probably gonna get fired. Which makes me wonder if she isn't going to become Sven's songwriting partner. Sven has admitted more than once that a lot of his songs are pretty horrible, and I can imagine May getting a kick out of seeing how banal and clichéd a lyric she could come up with.
-
Faye: "Your leg fell off HOW?!"
May: "SHUT UP and f**k it."
FTFY (or I eat a ban, either way)
In other news, I vote for Mays new chassis to be her current chassis, but with 50% more self-deprication. I.e. "I love to hate how horrible this body is".
-
Somehow, Sven and May combined are a lot more horrible than the sum of their parts ...
-
Calling it now, they're going to get stuck like that and have to get Faye and Bubble to 'disconnect' them.
-
I'm amazed that people are still hollering about that T-shirt that appeared in one panel like six months ago. It's almost like Jeph put it into the comic with the express intent of marketing it or something.
-
There are several things that it's deeply unwise to do with one's private parts. Sticking it in a precision-engineered mechanical apparatus with lots of moving parts is definitely one of them. I just hope that May holds still and there are nothing in her hip joint that automatically moves every now and then.
Calling it now, they're going to get stuck like that and have to get Faye and Bubble to 'disconnect' them.
That would be super-bad. I mean, Faye might injure herself from laughing so hard!
-
Is it just me, or is this quite possibly Jeph's best strip ever?
So much happening, yet so little happens.
The one where he buried the Faye/Marten hopes forever was like that too. There was a question about Toto, there was a hair tousle, and even Marten didn't know how much was happening.
-
Love the Beavis and Butthead laughter at the end xD
-
With that shifty-looking person in there, I think that May is fucked, and not in the fun way.
Looks like the teen from #4067 (https://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=4067) and #4073 (https://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=4073).
-
Yes, and they've probably filled their pockets with everything that they could. So, May is probably in deep and likely job-terminal trouble but, in the end, I suspect that other prospects may be on the verge of opening to her via Sven and Roko.
-
This is immediately one of my favourite comics in the history of the strip.
-
I was gonna say "It'll be funny until it gets stuck in there", but Killspree beat me to it. I wonder if Faye/Bubs make "house calls"... Or are we gonna see Sven and May hopping together down the street to UR...

A very awkward walk of shame indeed.

A very awkward walk of shame indeed.
It might even be a race to get there without anyone seeing them. A three-legged race, even.
-
Considering Sven's involvement, methinks it might be better to hop to a hospital first. :psyduck:
-
Plus Sven and Faye had a thing at one point. That'd be... really, REALLY awkward.
-
This strip made me laugh but then I thought about it a bit longer and it got a bit too body horror.

YOU'RE BACK !!!!! :)

Which would probably give May a fit of giggles at the very least, making things even more awkward.
-

Why though? Its not like Sven and Faye are still in a relationship. Faye has long since moved on and Sven has made some progress. Even if Sven came into the workshop with his dick in May's hip, its not something Faye hasn't seen before. Also, the idea of there being any awkwardness lessens the impact her relationship with Bubbles has had on her.

Faye: why am I not surprised?

The universe is absurd and your actions are inherently meaningless. So you are free to create your own meaning and if you fall flat on your butt, it doesn't matter.

Doesn't that count as work accident? That means May is insured by the employer and if they refuse, Roko can spin in into a building code violation (as I don't see any machinery that could otherwise cause loss of limb).
-
This is... an interesting... comic. I like it. Just the "hehehe"s at the end.
-
Comic’s up.
Ker-CHUK
-
Sven’s getting into an ambiguous fling with an abrasive, emotionally guarded woman who likes poop jokes and whose name rhymes with Clay, so I guess time is a flat circle.
-
Someone needs to point out to Sven that he now has a type for girlfriends. :-D :-P

May is doing things at work that she shouldn't be doing, so I doubt it's covered as a "workplace accident".
-
Herecs hoping May's boss is a big fan of Sven. That's about the only way I can see her keeping her job.
-
Just when I was thinking this strip couldn't get any weirder
Hey - what if this was meant to happen?? I mean, May and Sven plainly have a connection (beside the obvious one you perverts :-D) - they both are somewhat damaged individuals, they both have a desire for the purely physical interaction of sex, they both tend to push others away who might get too close emotionally, they both end up making their friends wary of what they might do next and thereby alienating themselves...
It's almost like... May was intended to be like this, to suit Sven - almost like an AnthroPC??
What if she was originally intended to be an AnthroPC - to be Sven's AnthroPC?? - but her personality was such that she rebelled against the whole AnthroPC concept and, seeking freedom, decided to steal enough money to become a fighter jet instead... OMG HOW LONG HAS JEPH BEEN PLANNING THIS :-D
-
There is something very, very teen romance about the way that Sven and May are being so overt about denying an emotional connection of any kind. It's clear that May is a very vulnerable person (that has been clear since the end of her very first appearance) but what is interesting is that Sven just admitted to her that he has his own reason to fear a connection too.
Nonetheless, that connection is there (or at least I think so). It's actually amazing what May and Sven are willing to share with each other and the trust that they show. So, yeah, I think that Jeph is planning a 'denial' story thread for the two of them.
-
I know Faye has moved on, but she may have some issues treating May’s damage if she knows what’s been in there.
-
I'm not sure Faye and May have a great deal in common other than rhyming names and being abrasive. And given how many people Sven has seemingly slept with, I doubt they contribute 1% of his total between them.
I generally hate both these characters but for some reason really like them together.
-

I saw the root before seeing the smiley face. In retrospect, it is probably an AnthroPC (similar to Winslow's old chassis) with a hand to the left and speech bubble on top. The thing that looks like antennae is actually the speech bubble tail. The outline of chassis looks like root sign completely by accident. With no meaning, as you rightly have pointed out.

Awwhhhh how can you hate May!?
Poor wee broken sweetheart that she is!
-
I know Faye has moved on, but she may have some issues treating May’s damage if she knows what’s been in there.
Given that what might be in there is a human fluid, and therefore capable of infecting her, I'd hope Faye used gloves inside an AI's internals. But then in 4085 we see her without gloves and digging into a space with unexplained fluids... Eeeeuuuuuuuuuuwwwww. And then considering the possibility that robot goo could be toxic - even if only mildly as May has found out, well.... Yikes, Faye! Maybe this becomes a future plot point as Faye learns the job?
If May is leaking joint fluid, how come we never see any stains/wet spots on her clothes?
And if the innards of an AI are a lot of open space (think Barry's keys going missing), and likely warm, then any human ... er ... residue ... inside an AI is going to ferment, maybe cause corrosion, and eventually require some kind of cleaning if only to reduce/eliminate the odor. :-o Yuck!

But Sven hasn't slept with hardly anyone. They almost never get so much as a wink.
I really do like this pairing, too.
-
I really hope they cleaned that joint before he reassembled it.
-
As long as hipsters are the only ones hip to hipfucking, it will be a thing. But once there's hype, the hipsters will flee and let the hypesters take over, and hipfucking won't be hip anymore. But if it can't be hip fucking, what will it be?
-
I generally hate both these characters but for some reason really like them together.
I'm the precise opposite of this - generally enjoy reading comics featuring these characters, but I'm finding the current storyline uninteresting, insofar as it is (as Ben mentioned) very "teen" and is also retreading (not for the first time) very old ground with both characters. It reveals nothing new, nor does it develop either character or even their relationship (apart from the bare fact that they've bonked again).

Uh, I'm seeing

2. In this comic & town, the Truth will often be stranger than pragmatic &/or probable explanations. ;)

Weirdly I actually hope May gets canned, if only for realism.
Poor Sven. Tells truth, doesn't get believed...
-
In case today's comic feels familiar (https://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=3010)

When it becomes easier to make up your own reality than accept what has actually been happening around you because it's more plausible. I think that I passed that watershed when I was still in my mid-teen years.

I disagree. Especially after 4098, where Sven is trying to do the right thing, is telling the truth, and getting ever more frustrated that others are reacting as if he hasn't changed; especially Dora. He also knows, now, that he's hooked and wants this relationship to work even if May is still resisting.
May is digging her own emotional hole ever deeper and getting more attached to Sven which is why she's pushing him away so hard. I wonder what cataclysm will happen that forces her to see this. A new body perhaps, with more appropriate accessories?
-

I just wanted to say that I was curious about that as well but nearly made the mistake of finding out what it is. You are wise and I have learned from your wisdom.
-
As noted in several posting it is likely that May (the robot) may get fired for this. I hope not she has had a troubled life.
Although, i was shocked sorta when i saw her and Sven on the bench...hehe
Looking forward to seeing what happens with May

I feel like reading any of her origins whatsoever will show you she has had a pretty troubled life well before now.

Technically correct for certain values of "scissors."

Is it wrong that I kinda wanna hear how bad Sven's songs are?
-
Is it wrong that I kinda wanna hear how bad Sven's songs are?
Yes and no.
-
I now desperately want to hear "Did My Wife Leave Me Or Is She Wearin' Realtree?". It sounds jaw-droppingly bad and therefore hilarious.

Basically the same melody as "I Gave Her Mah Ring An' She Gave Me Thuh Finger."
It's worth noting that, in a 'verse in which AIs can control anyhing from a humaniform chassis to a space habitat-laboratory, the song "She Thinks My Tractor's Sexy" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=udaSVJmmXYk) tells a completely different story than it does in ours.
-
I've always felt a bit sorry for Sven in this area. Yes, he's successful and, as a consequence, nicely comfortably well off. However, I feel that he's somewhat artistically unfulfilled as a result. What is worse for him, he is increasingly aware that he is, in his own mind, something of a fraud and he's really starting to wonder if he has a talent other than pandering!
This micro-arc is interesting because it reminds us that, even though they have reconciled, Sven and Dora still have a decade or two of being feuding siblings behind them and it's easy to revert to default behaviour. Especially if it's funny.
-

On the other hand, he's financially comfortable and seems to have plenty of leisure time. He could pursue more artistic stuff, no problem.
There *are* artists who create well-selling tripe for money and pursue art as a hobby in addition to that. Many of those have less time to do that than I assume Sven does.
-
It seems to me, Sven and May can have that kind of unadulterated, brutal honesty relationship. Nothing would ever be too weird, no taboos, no whatever color tinted glasses.
Whether they'll be more than what had happened already is up to them, and whether they'll allow to let at least some kind of friendship to grow.

I guess it was a real barnburner.
-
Oh, good. It’s another Sven self-loathing strip.
-
Have Marten hear it. "Dude.. you wrote DEATH METAL. No wonder your agent hated it."
-
...why does his agent have a barn?
-

I love Brad Paisley. You're not alone.
...why does his agent have a barn?
Why not?
-
...why does his agent have a barn?
Not enough horses for a stable?
-
...why does his agent have a barn?
His agent specializes in country music. Of course they have a barn.
-
Okay, that's depressing in lots of ways.
So, I find myself wondering what the lesson for Sven was here. I suspect that he thought it was: "Stick to what you're good at because you don't have the talent for anything else!" Which must have been a dreadful personal blow. Still, doing stuff like this is always a risk. If you have a familiar 'genre', going outside that always risks alienating fans because it isn't what they expect from you.
FWIW, I think that his agent's reaction was probably invalid. They were upset because it likely wasn't a commercial record at all but something more complex that would likely only please a few core fans. Low commercial saleability = reduced value of the agent's 20% cut!
I do hope that Dora is paying attention here. She always thought that Sven had things easy and today's comic proves that he has not.
-
Oh, good. It’s another Sven self-loathing strip.
This has got to be at least the second, possibly the third, time where Dora and Sven have had this conversation.
-
[quietly walks away whistling as he realizes this is probably not the place to confess that he likes Brad Paisley]
Not a country fan, so I went and listened to a few of his supposedly greatest hits. At least the man can sing reasonably well, unlike waaaaay too many other country singers of the last two decades...
However, given the titles I saw, I'm not sure but what Jeph has an alias he uses for that market. Wouldn't it be funny if it was Sven Bianchi??!??
-
Faye listening to radio

Faye, "SVEN YOU ASSHOLE...."
Sven: Listen to the whole song.
Verse 2 is why 'Titania' was right to dump him for Effervesia, who is much better for Titania anyway.
-

A note: the only time he really has this conversation is with Dora. It's like she's his personal flogger.
-
Do song writers actually have fans? How many people actually know who wrote their favourite pop song? Unless the performer is also the one who wrote it, I would wager not many.

Just a thought - what if all the people who listened to (and hated) Sven's song, were the same people who bought his usual songs? I mean, what we're talking about here, are people with the sort of taste in music that appreciates Sven's usual highly successful trash :-P
In other words, maybe it could be a potential hit with a discerning audience whose taste isn't just in their mouths?

FWIW, I think that is precisely what happened but Sven's self-esteem is pretty rocky in the end and I think it would be very difficult to convince him of that...
Unless his sister's ex-boyfriend wants to talk up his more experimental stuff on his music/pop culture blog, maybe?

So will Dora actually support her brother for once?

So will Dora actually support her brother for once?
NEVAR!!!1!11!1
She will, one day, realise, it's never going to be any better. And since they're siblings, teasing is the best thing to do. She'll learn when he's being sincere and when it's OK to crack a joke at his misfortune.

A little aside: most of the people who do the songwriting in Nashville tend to congregate (or at least they "used to" congregate) in houses over by 16th Avenue South in the Music Square area of the city. This is also the general area where many major recording studios are located.
Lacy J. Dalton had a song ("16th Avenue") that memorialized these songwriters.
