I think that Faye is pretty determined to improve the business (and its takings) somehow. How can she possibly do that? I've come up with some silly ideas, why don't you share your own?
If I had to ask where I think that Jeph is going, I think it is using Sam's sudden in-trend fame as a form of marketing promotion: Throw Sam's work in for free (the cost of actual engineering would would cover Sam's fees and then some anyway). In exchange, promise Sam that they're never going to tell Jim that she's started drinking coffee at a young age!
-
Word-of-mouth is one of the most powerful ways to get business, even to this day.
Probably explains the wording for slander and liable laws. It doesn't matter if it's true. Just that it hurts their public reputation.

Word-of-mouth is one of the most powerful ways to get business, even to this day.
Probably explains the wording for slander and liable laws. It doesn't matter if it's true. Just that it hurts their public reputation.
But truth of the allegation is an absolute defense to slander/libel charges, criminal or civil.
The problem UR is having has plagued small businesses since the invention of competition. Technical skills don't always live in the same head as business or advertising skills. Look at all the tech outfits with excellent products that have gone belly-up since the mid-'90s. Right now the people hearing the word-of-mouth, friends of May and Melon, aren't the kind with disposable income for custom butts. (I'm not sure Bartholomew Punchbot, PCA is publicizing that he's also "Basher Bart" Punchbot, Fighting Robot. If he was squishy, he might want to keep a lid on it.)
-
I remember reading somewhere that a small business starting out needs to budget for a YEAR of not making money.....
So, this could be interesting.
-
Probably more for a year, in the case of an overhead-heavy outfit like UR would have to be.
And, hey, Sam (and Faye) -- it doesn't have to be poaching. You can complement each other, be a business draw for each other.
I like it when festival organizers set my caricature tent up next to the face painters. We bring business to each other. I've seen other operations where the same outfit offers caricatures and face painting (generally different artists, because of workflow logistics and because the skill sets and required equipment are different.)
-
That might not work here. The impermanence of Sam's work is the draw, every piece unique and soon lost to time, like tears in the rain. Faye's welding work would be more like a permanent change, which might fly in the face of what those AI want.
-
It does also raise the question if EXTREEEEEME body-mod is a thing for robots. *lol*
-
I vote for other although it’s similar to the livestream idea. I think they could host a reality show about AI repairs and upgrades that would be fake as hell for the sake of ratings, but bring in potential customers.
-
Did Faye and Bubbles ever complete the penis Pintsize has commissioned (https://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=3502)?
-
Yeah, this is going to get awkward between Faye and Sam to the point where it strains their relationship, isn't it? Faye obviously is feeling very jealous of Sam's success and Sam is still young enough not to get that and respond to Faye by basically sticking her tongue out at her! We'll see whether or not they can work this out with time but I do think that Sam is going to be very quickly coming up on a learning experience or two about how business matters can ruin friendships.
Did Faye and Bubbles ever complete the penis Pintsize has commissioned (https://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=3502)?
Jeph sometimes forgets little moments like that. I strongly suspect that's so in this case so don't expect to see that answered.
-
Think bigger, Faye. Custom chassis or bodyshell.
-
Picturing a head that is an open framework with wind chimes suspended within it.
-
As bizarre as that sounds, when it comes to QC synthetics, it is only a case of finding the right customer!
-
Did Faye and Bubbles ever complete the penis Pintsize has commissioned (https://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=3502)?
I remember even earlier he wanted her to make him a gauss-rifle dick, though he never got to the point of asking - his opening was poorly executed. (Can't be arsed to find and link the strip)
-
See if they can get a charity gig doing zero-profit repair work for low-income synthetics
...
Oh futz. I shoulda thought of that for a Yay intervention point. Maybe Jeph already did. That would help keep them busy and would help generate a bundle of new customers as well as cash flow - often more important to new businesses than profit.
-
I generally only have the spoons to lurk on forums (in general ) these days, but I need to post this: has it yet been observed how ENTIRELY Sam is making herself over into Faye's image? She's now wearing the same kind of tank top and the hair, the hair!! Faye might not realize it (Sam either?), but she's becoming a mentor.
-
It would only be poaching clients if they were offering the same services, but they are not. The two lines are not competitive but are naturally complementary (think dog groomer next door to a veterinary clinic). Methinks Faye will eventually figure this out, perhaps with a nudge from Dora who most certainly DOES have a noggin full of business sense.
-

Just so long as they come up with something better than "Pimp My Chassis".
-
No doubt some won't like Faye in this strip (and I'm the first to admit I generally don't like her generally) but here its never a bad idea to let a child (ok young teen) know their place. Kids need encouragement but also boundaries and Faye is, inadvertently, teaching Sam where her place is.
-
Not just kids.
-
Not just kids.
Hopefully Sam won't be one of them
-
Just so long as they come up with something better than "Pimp My Chassis".
I can only imagine the horror show that could happen from that.
Pimp My Chassis host Exhibit Z: "Hey Roko, we heard that you like baking bread, so we've replaced all your limbs with dough kneaders and mixers and we've made your torso into an oven!"
Roko: "Err...how am I supposed to get home?"
Exhibit Z: "Ain't my problem. Enjoy your fire hazard body that will cost a small fortune to insure!"
-
Show of hands: does anyone NOT think that May's going to blurt out that her hip keeps popping out when boning Sven, and Faye's going to have a tizzy?
(Maybe someday Faye's going to grow up some and stop thinking that the guy who was nothing more to her than a periodic booty call is the Source of All Evil, but I ain't holding my breath on that one.)
-
"What's this goop in the housing?"
"....."
"What?"
"You don't want to know."
(Also hope you wore gloves, Faye.)
-
Artemisia or Orazio Gentileschi?
[Yes, I had to look that up.]
-

Looks like she may have overcorrected whilebeing vague in that department.

Everyone expecting this comic to suddenly have a plot:

Yeah, that's the first time that I've ever seen Faye genuinely angry at Sam. She's annoyed and jealous and her whole anger control thing is making her mean. That said, doing it in front of May means that there is now a timer running down to when someone confronts her about it!
That said, I also think that Faye remains sceptical of Sam treating the customers with due respect, so, all other issues aside, she's got a reason for keeping her away from serious examinations.
FWIW, I think that May's chassis was once pretty good before years of wear and tear and likely only semi-warranty-approved activities made the parts start to give out.
Show of hands: does anyone NOT think that May's going to blurt out that her hip keeps popping out when boning Sven, and Faye's going to have a tizzy?
No, I don't expect May to address that unless Faye specifically asks. I've noticed that now May is actually having sexual contact with someone as a real, personal experience, she's lost her usual boundary-free attitude towards the subject. It's obvious that she's found the emotional baggage is a lot greater than she expected and that she prefers to not talk about it, even with someone she trusts like Momo.
-

It's the classic "hardly anyone has the full context" problem. Right now, May only sees Faye being pushy, but doesn't know what happened before. If there'll be shouting, Bubs will have to be the one sorting it out.
-
At first, I was going to put "Take May up on her 'dancing with a sandwich board whilst handing out fliers' idea" - but then I realized that having May's hip randomly popping out of joint would be somewhat counterproductive...
-
At this stage, May seems to be Faye's only regular customer.

I believe Punchbot is also a regular

The upside is Roko stops having dissociative episodes.
-
The downside is that she burns her apartment down.

The downside is that she burns her apartment down.
Given enough time Melon probably will.
-
I know that not everyone loves May, but there are moments when it's good to have someone around who is this brash.

She knows. Her emotions are just getting the better of her.
-
The downside is that she burns her apartment down.
Marten gains a new roommate. It is getting a little crowded by now, though.
-
Roko hasn't experienced a bread episode since The Squishing, has she? Maybe that's the problem, her bread lust is gone.
(If she's got a kink for bread, does that make her a pansexual?)
-
She was worried about that, but a visit to the bakery quickly proved that wasn't a concern....
-
Uh, the head on Pintsize's body, or the end of his mysterious Appendage?
Depends on how much she wants him to suffer... I guess?
-
Hopefully Sam won't be one of them
Sorry but hopefully, Sam will be one of them, and soon. I've been losing patience with Sam for a while, but I've been over her since she climbed in the window instead of waiting. Someone should have reminded her what happened last time she was unsupervised in the workshop. That was completely inappropriate on her part. All she does is doodle on people with sharpies for ****'s sake and she acts like she owns the place.

New strip up.
Not to be mean, Faye, but THIS IS WHY YOU'RE NOT MAKING MONEY.
You are a (self) trained mechanic. Your time is worth money. At least charge May $20.
-
Marten gains a new roommate. It is getting a little crowded by now, though.
Heck, between Bubbles and Pintsize charging up, Marten's electric bill's got to be sky high as it is!
Mod edit: fixed the quote tag.
-
Man, May's expression just broke my heart. I've made that face May, more than once. That's the face of someone who just found out that they don't have nearly enough money to fix something the rely on for day-to-day life.
I've also been Faye here, as an IT professional. Plenty of friends have come to me for professional assistance, and I've ended up doing the work for part cost only because I knew they couldn't afford my rates.
That said, I feel like I've hit on the best "friend" rate. Take me out to lunch/dinner. Not as a date, just as friends, but if we're not close enough as friends for it not to be weird then we're not close enough friends for you to get my "friend" rate.
-
I still charge friends $20 an hour, but I don't count time sitting as something installs or updates. I also have the condition that I don't support anything Windows. Mac or Linux please.
-

Faye also knows that May is broke AF.

Welcome, new person!
Sam has certainly irritated other people but she does have the handicap of being a character in a webcomic built around boundary violations.
-
Yeah, May's been in this situation before and it must feel awful for her. That said, I think that Faye's sympathy comes from the fact that she's been in this situation before. Especially early in QC's history, Faye more than once mentioned just how badly her financial situation was and the 'food' upon which she was having to subsist before she moved in with Marten.
Meanwhile, I'm wondering when May's brain will catch up with the fact that Sven left stuff behind in her and that Faye knew what it was. Talk about an embarrassing medical consultation!
"Sven is not a mooch" is an interesting footer comment from Jeph. Is he suggesting that Sven would help out if asked but that May is reluctant to ask?
-
At this point I'm waiting for the "Welcome to the club!" moment.
-
Technical Note:
Do you remember when May's right arm fell off? That was an issue with the retaining ring too. I'm thinking that early decay of those particular components is a known issue with that class of chassis.
-
All she does is doodle on people with sharpies for ****'s sake and she acts like she owns the place.
All she does is doodle people with sharpies and then those people spread the word about the place on social media (https://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=3799). Union Robotics has no advertisments or anything, Sam's drawings are how every paying customer finds the place.
-
Technical Note:

Sounds feasible. Or scheduled maintenance on hard-worked components has been neglected.
Can anyone explain the "Sven is not a mooch" comment? My American English dictionary defines mooch (as a noun), as a beggar or scrounger. Sven is well-off so why would he be begging? Especially off May? I am confused.
-
I'm not too worried about Faye's financials. More money will come from the same place as all of Union Robotics' high-end equipment.
-
(If she's got a kink for bread, does that make her a sliced pansexual?)
FTFY.
-

I don't think anyone understands that comment. You are correct on the definition of mooch, but Sven is nowhere to be seen here. I think perhaps it is meant to contrast Sven to May, who is acting like a little bit of a mooch here, or to say Sven probably should owe May a little bit for repairs, seeing as he did deposit at least some of the, ah, material in her leg socket, but those are just guesses.
-
So if we apply Occam's Razor, Jeph made a mistake and meant May, not Sven.
-

Having fixed my share of retaining rings on various devices, I can see why they would be covered under a maintenance system (replace every 300,000,000 steps or annually, whichever comes first), which we know May's Chassis no longer has support from. And having seen May in action before, she'll figure out a way to repay everyone eventually.

The Sven comment was used at the bottom of comic 4101 (https://questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=4101), so perhaps Jeph started from that comic and accidentally left the bottom phrase unchanged.
-
Just a thought: perhaps the comment is meant contrastively: Sven is not a mooch (but May is).

A mooch more specifically seems to carry the conotation of the beggar/scrounger being unwilling to make an effort to reciprocate others' generosity towards them. Often referred to as an 'unrepentant mooch'. A number of sitcoms have one of these characters.
EDIT: Found a good entry on Urban Dictionary:
Someone who takes and takes but never gives. They could take food, money or anything that you give them but never give you anything in return.
-
Aye. They're the one who is perpetually, magically absent when it gets to be their round, or conveniently "forgets" their wallet every time that they go out. Their actual income or resources don't matter.
-

Supporting your theory, the topline got reused as well. Comic 4128 has "4101: IOU" at the top, not the correct number.
The reuse is kind of amusing given the situation, though...

Roko hasn't experienced a bread episode since The Squishing, has she? Maybe that's the problem, her bread lust is gone.
(If she's got a kink for bread, does that make her a pansexual?)
Roko was crushed in #3900 (https://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=3900), and checked out The Secret Bakery in #3959 (https://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=3959).
Find out more at the QC Wiki (https://questionablecontent.fandom.com/wiki/Roko_Basilisk#Body_crushing_incident)!

I know. I was just too eagar to do the pan (spanish for "bread") gag. Since my life hasn't been threatened I must assume no one got the joke.
-
More likely a lot of people decided not to encourage you.
-
Slow your roll! As far as I am concerned, those people are the problem, and are a bunch of croutons to boot!
I thought that pun was pantastic. I'm bread to enjoy such things. I always want a pitta that. Anyone on this forum who doesn't agree with me is toast or secretly loves puns and is being an open-faced liar. It's unfortunate that OldGoat's joke got overlooked, sandwiched as it was between serious discourse about the comic.

No worries. I'll just go back to loafing around.

Yeah capitalism sucks but its still better than anything else currently available
-
Sorry, everyone.
-
About what? There's no knead to apologise for anything!
-
It's just that once this thread gets a starter, it's toast.
-
New strip up. :D
Faye is just too nice at times.
One wonders if the money Spooky donated will eventually pop up.
-
Ditching a paying customer to go ogle a sentient being's dismemberment as if they were a just a thing...yeah...
At least Beeps is getting a first hand look at May's issues.
-
Is this the first confirmation we've had that Beeps goes by "she"? I remember that was a bit of confusion a while back...
-
Oh, hello Beepatrice! You know, I'm thinking that maybe she's overdoing the "Roko is edgy and that is what makes her strong and assertive, therefore I must look more edgy" assumption! Still, if she is getting a kitty, it isn't going to at all be out-of-character for her!
It also might be useful for one of May's two case-workers to be here right now, given yesterday's conversation about funding. I wonder if Beepatrice will realise that or if none of this will reach Roko's ears until the 'what did you do yesterday?' conversation beside the coolant top-up machine?
There is such an edge of sweetness to this. Sam desperately wants to be involved in the engineering side of this and the wonderfully teenage way she tries to avoid Faye's glance made me grin. Of course, Faye has been there herself (probably many times) and she knows the symptoms, so Sam doesn't fool her! FWIW, I'm wondering just how undignified Sam's doubtless very rapid scramble from a kneeling position behind Beepatrice to a standing position in front of Faye was in retrospect?
-
As has been noted above...
Sam really is a Faye Mini-Me now, huh!? :)
-
Sam has an ally in May.
and ... Don't poke the pube, Sam!
( cute kitty huh see the fangs the claws i mean just lookit the bones )
-
Sam is giving me focus whiplash. First she's overly excited and focused on sprays, but now that Faye has some of her actual work to do, Sam wants to drop everything and be all up in her business.
GET YER SPRAYS DONE FIRST, KID!
Don't get me wrong, it's good to be excitable about possible future career path options, but Sam seriously needs some chill. Maybe once puberty has settled.
-
Yea, I'm feeling some second-hand awkwardness for Beeps here. Imagine getting a tattoo and your artist jumps up to help someone work on a car halfway through. Or, I guess... assist in surgery? AI/human metaphors are tricky sometimes.
-
At least Beeps is getting a first hand look at May's issues.
It's not clear Beeps knows who May is (Roko hasn't named May to Beeps in-strip yet) and even if she does know, hasn't officially met May or even seen May. I expect May is behind a curtain or in another room at the shop, so not within Beeps sight currently. So to Beeps, Sam leaping up to help isn't all that sensical.
-

Sam is there to learn about robot repair and while the sprays are something to do that she has a talent for an opportunity to observe emerges so she really should be there for it.
-
New strip up.
Ah, May, never change. :-D
-
Some of still don't have a leg attached.
-
At least she’s not legless.
-
May, I don't know if you've been following but what Faye and Sam are doing is sort of a prerequisite to reattaching your leg. Faye probably never realised that she has it in her to be a teacher. Meanwhile, Bubbles never realised that she would end up being an elementary school teacher for a bunch of adults.
Bubbles' cat face made me think of an article I read about true sentience. A machine, no matter how 'smart' its software could only reproduce an image it has either captured or is in its memory to the best quality its hardware can provide. A true AI can actually 'draw something that looks like a cat face' that is an amalgam of memories and abstract ideas about what cats ought to look like. Bubbles probably never saw that cat before she started drawing; that's what marks her a real conscious being.

Cross-training and broadening the institutional skill set. This will be good for the future of Union Robotics (and Body Art).

I dunno why but Panel #3 gave me flashbacks to the pottery wheel scene in Ghost lol.

Bubs, what you've done here - although probably highly skilled - might not exactly be what Beeps has signed up for...
But which side is which artist's??
(Have you extrapolated from an incomplete set of data?? :) )
-
If Beeps raises a point, they could always say that its a comment about the dichotomy of the originality of art and the mass production of "art". Or something to that effect.
-
Such an explanation would, of course, raise the spray to the status of 'fine art' with the automatically-assumed increase of fee by about a solid order of magnitude.
-

Because of how brains work, I didn't notice that typo at first; my mind just kept filling in the missing word.

Honestly, I passed over it on my first reading as well.
I just take some comfort in seeing an artist fuck up publicly. Like when I saw Fates Warning live and there was a slight goof in the second chorus of "Silent Cries" (I didn't actually notice it, but the band members laughing about it was hard to miss) - I had regarded them as somewhat godlike up until then. Or on my Kenso concert DVD where Dr. Shimizu fucked up the opening guitar lick on "Shining in the Sky", a mistake preserved for posterity. That bothered me at first, but now I'm like "okay, he's a human being too."

Not only yours. I kept looking for a misspelling, not a missing word. Guess that's why it slipped JJ.

Bubs, what you've done here - although probably highly skilled - might not exactly be what Beeps has signed up for...
But which side is which artist's??
(Have you extrapolated from an incomplete set of data?? :) )
I created a multi-part extrapolation. Which means it's probably wronger than I'll ever care to admit.
The way I see it, Bubs is o the left off Beeps, so the left side is hers. And judging by the designs other customers left with, none had the detail that one half Beeps has, and also Bubbles is waaaaay too proud to complete the spray with the right side if Sam's was the left half.
-
And here I was thinking Bubs could just duplicate Sam's left half on the right to complete the spray. Seems like it would be easy: impose a grid on the visual data stream and then (re)draw the mirror image. But I suppose that wouldn't be "artistic"...
Actually, as far as characterizations go, I'm kinda disappointed in this strip. While Sam may be in character, seems to me Bubs and Faye aren't - they would be forcing Sam to finish with her customer first.
-
And here I was thinking Bubs could just duplicate Sam's left half on the right to complete the spray. Seems like it would be easy: impose a grid on the visual data stream and then (re)draw the mirror image. But I suppose that wouldn't be "artistic"...

Maybe Beeps said it was okay and she would wait? That would be in character for her.

Something I'm surprised I haven't seen mentioned here so far: Didn't Jim explicitly say "no more power tools?"
Is Sam going to keep this from him or will she spill the beans and get everyone in trouble?

Deliberate play on words or delightful accident?
But, you make an excellent point about Jim having forbidden the use of power tools by Sam.
Wonder if this is a deliberate decision by JJ or if he forgot about that?

Some of still don't have a leg attached.
Because of how brains work, I didn't notice that typo at first; my mind just kept filling in the missing word.
Not only yours. I kept looking for a misspelling, not a missing word. Guess that's why it slipped JJ.
There are two types of people: those who can extrapolate from an incomplete set of data.
Also, Sam has been shown to draw righthanded in multiple comics, and in #4129 her positioning and where she's looking appears to indicate she is working on the right side of Beepatrice's back. Not 100% certain of course but I feel pretty confident about it :)

Such an explanation would, of course, raise the spray to the status of 'fine art' with the automatically-assumed increase of fee by about a solid order of magnitude.

I am reminded of a pic in (Look?) Magazine eons ago showing two toddlers at an art museum peering intently at a ventilator grating.

He and Faye talked about it. (https://questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=4077)

I'd forgotten about Chaos Loaf. Damn, I AM getting old!

Ah yes, the least understood but most often encountered kind of artist. The one with what we shall delicately call the B.S. degree.

Was it an art deco grating or some older?

Poll Results Post
Save Union Robotics! What publicity stunts are needed?
1. Get Marigold's help to seriously upgrade the shop's on-line presence and SEO - 12 (34.3%)
=2. Free cosmetic upgrade consultation with Faye. "We'll make you unique!" - 5 (14.3%)
=2. See if they can get a charity gig doing zero-profit repair work for low-income synthetics & then persuade clients to purchase optional extras - 5 (14.3%)
=4. Get Roko, Punchbot, Chimevera and other satisfied customers to do on-line endorsements - 4 (11.4%)
=4. Live-stream major rebuilds (not only would there be an audience, I'm sure synthetics would volunteer to be the subject!) - 4 (11.4%)
6. Ask Crushbot or the Cloaked Emu to hang out outside the shop; the customers will soon be streaming in! - 2 (5.7%)
=7. Take May up on her 'dancing with a sandwich board whilst handing out fliers' idea - 1 (2.9%)
=7. "Say 'Bubbles Sent Me' and you get a FREE Sam Bean original spray!" - 1 (2.9%)
=7. Other (please specify in comments) - 1 (2.9%)
Well, a clear and interesting winner this week! Interesting because, whilst I agree it's the most sensible option (and in-universe pretty intuitive; good Google, Ask and other ranking equals greater interest when you're dealing with electronic customers), I would argue that it's the least sustainable as a plot arc. One or two strips talking to Marigold plus possibly one or two others for wisecracks about the whole thing and then that's it beyond the Wiki noting that Marigold is the webmaster of 'unionrobotics-repairs.biz'.
Contrast that with, say the option about May being a singing and dancing publicist. You could literally have a strip a week of the latest weirdo (or member of the cast) who approaches May with some 'witty' observation!
Ah well, no-one ever said these things were scientific!

No. Plainly meant to keep stuff out of the ventilation system, period.
'Functionalism', if anything.

Wow... It's not even one of those fancy turn-of-thezcentury grates. Just a plain old (brutalist even) grate.

I'm reminded of the episode "The Chimes of Big Ben" from The Prisoner wherein The Prisoner builds a boat to escape the Village, and enters it as an abstract piece in an art competition as a cover, and during the event he spins a load of bullshit to the judges about the meaning of his piece, which is titled "Escape".
[EDIT] actually he entered the competition at the suggestion of Number Two, but still used it as a cover as he built his boat; the gist is the same.

Alice? Who the f*** is Alice?
Not just someone else who fell down the rabbit-hole but the very first! (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alice_Liddell)

Alice? Who the f*** is Alice?
Go ask her.
"You can get anything you want at Alice's Restaurant."
I was never a fan of Alice in Wonderland, so depending on the context, my mind will jump to "Alice's Restaurant Massacree" by Arlo Guthrie (which contains the lines above) or "White Rabbit" by Jefferson Airplane when a Wonderland reference is possible.

Alice? Who the f*** is Alice?
She's Bob's friend and Eve's enemy.

Oh, THAT Alice. Was thinking a bit more neighbourly (https://youtu.be/zw08Py5nz1w).
