<insert socially appropriate greeting here>
Some wildly interesting facts about me:
- Born and raised in Utrecht, Netherlands
- Currently living in Christchurch, New Zealand
- Likes knitting, crochet, D&D, boardgames, binge-watching various streaming shows, playing video games, and myriad other things as the mood strikes her
- 36 years old
- Cisgender, heterosexual female
- Motto in life: 'Try not to be an *sshole'
- Kinda worried about the state of the world
There's more, but this is a good starting point. I stumbled across QC a couple of months ago, and I love the variety and inclusiveness of the characters that Jeph has created. I can't wait to see where the storylines will cross, diverge, and/or merge in the future.

Welkom!

Greetings! (melts your lug wrench) :)
NOTE: This is an old joke from a gentleman who used to live in Aussieland and was a regular poster on the forums - until he went blind due to various medical reasons. :( We on the QC Welcoming Committee occasionally dust it off for such situations, especially when it's someone from Down Under joining us.

Welcome, newcomer. Having read everything twice means you have slightly less than doubled my readcount, congrats!
Feel no need to censor your profanity here; we're a fuckin' free-swingin' forum in that regard for the most part, but do be sure to read the forum rules, as we are certainly not a free-for-all.
Be sure to venture into the non-comic-based subfora, as there's quite a lot of emotionally and intellectually enriching stuff on there!

Welcome, frae Bonnie Scotland...!

Willkommen in der Klapsmühle!

It's great to be here :)

Willkommen in der Klapsmühle!
Welcome to the... slap grinder?
-
My translation add-on in my browser offers "funny farm", which I'm sure is near enough what he meant! Well, one of the three services it uses, at least...

I got "loony bin" and "funny farm" from Google as well, which makes sense in context, but also it said it wasn't commonly used so I didn't necessarily trust it.
-
Ha, my Google search ended up with 'nut house'.
-
Willkommen in der Klapsmühle!

Pretty much - and yes, it does mean 'bughouse/Asylum' - the idea being that mental illness is likened to having received sold blow(s) to the head, and that therapy in the early psychiatric wards was rather intense (Wikisez the term was coined during WWi).
It's a bit old-fashioned, but by no means uncommon, at least in my neck of the woods.

Psst! Guard your lugwrench!

That reference went straight over my head :o

Although not uncommon, ut is rather colloquial these days.

Of all the phrases above used for that particular sort of institution "Nut Grinder" is the only one I've never heard in common usage.
All the others, totally interchangeable :)
-
For some reason I want to translate "Klapsmühle" as "slap mill". Like a water wheel powered people slapper.

Part of a (sadly defunct) gentle hazing ritual we used to greet newcomers with - one of our regulars made a habit out of greeting newbies with a hearty "Greetings! *melts your lugwrench*", a reference to a scene from 80s SF movie Starman.
Over time, other regular members took to leaving warnings with their welcoming posts ("Hi there new person! *psssst - watch your lugwrench*), which usually served to immediately summon the lug wrench-melder. It became sort of a two-bit comedy routine cum hazing ritual, and part of the unspoken rules was that plaintive inquiries about what the hell the business with the lug wrenches was all about must be either ignored, or answered with equally cryptic 'explanations'.
Sadly, our resident melder of implements suffered a serious impairment of his vision recently, and is currently unable to partake in community life.

That's a bummer 🙁
-
What's sadder is that we have no way of knowing if if he's still around, from a breathing point of of view.
If anyone in Kiwiland knows of Kugai's whereabouts (https://forums.questionablecontent.net/index.php?action=profile;u=7634), send Melody Powers in after him.

🙁

Anyway, welcome to our microclimate!

Thank you :)

I now see that this has been explained a few times in this section of the forums, but this is the first time I've seen it.
Goodness.
I've not seen the film. Clearly.
Anyway, welcome!

Neither have I. One to put on my ever-growing 'to watch' list.
Thank you :)
