Title: The Synthetic Aesthetic - Could it take off as a human fashion?
Post by: BenRG on 29 Jan 2021, 01:44
Willow's offhand attempt to brush off not expecting Clinton to notice that Iris is a synthetic has got me thinking (always a bad thing).

Union Robotics has always had a huge cosmetic element to its customer base - most notably the sprays, Millie's butt implants and getting a new glove for Robo-Hand. I'm wondering if Jeph is planning to turn it into a bizarre pseudo-tattoo parlour? Seriously, the main driver for elective medical care tends to be aesthetics. If there is one thing that Cyberpunk 2077 proves is that humans have a bizarre fetish for looking like androids. So... let's sit down and do some thinking.

Does Derma (the synthetics' flexible skin equivalent) 'breathe'? If it does, why not start creating 'Derma Suits' that lets humans have the same tactile feel as synthetics? Why not articulated face masks or helmets to give them synthethic-like faces? I'm sure some hip kids would pay to have an LED face like Beepatrice's! If only for the lulz of having emoji expressions on tap. Actual cybernetics are outside their skillset but prosthetic exo-frames would be relatively trivial, so long as they get someone to set up the movement sensor grids and control software. A part of me wonders if Emily would be their first customer for a full body-suit!

"Do you envy your Synthetic friends for their look, feel and abilities? Well, we've got you covered!"

Wait, what was the robot related equivalent term to furries? Yeah, those guys. You want Union Robotics to turn into a specialist fetish store for them?

Well, okay…

Well, elements of the cybergoth aesthetic are well on the way to looking like a robot, so... yeah.

Emily wouldn't so much be a customer as the person who designs said suits. She does have a flair for fashion, what with Bub's sweater and Dale's CoD outfit 😊

I'd think that there would be a good market for this sort of thing, it's just a step up from tattoos and piercings.

One wonders if you can do Iron Man style mech suits in the QC world too.

I know Vespavenger had a mecha....

Well, okay…

If memory serves, it's 'clankers'. Though, that term's specifically for the ones who want to bone down with robots.

[Annoyingly, there's no differentiation between terms for people who think anthropomorphic animal characters look cool and the people who also want to screw those characters.]

UR hasn't the machinery or the know-how, to make such things.  Even the artificial skin used on May (and the monsters from planet heck) was a stock item, not something they manufactured.  While Bubs could certainly learn the basic of such fabrication from the web, as we all could, the UR building isn't likely big enough to take the equipment necessary to that kind of organic fabrication.

Now, if you want to talk about bespoke suits made from stocked materials, we know Bubs sews, but then you'd need to posit materials that don't yet exist in our universe.  Put Hannelore's father on this case!
