Title: WCDT August 9th - August 13th (4586-4590)
Post by: Gnabberwocky on 08 Aug 2021, 18:33
Didn't have a good poll idea, but comic's up.

I can understand Yay's reaction. It must be a nice feeling to experience mom kindness when you've never had parents, even if you're a superpowered AI.

Perhaps one regarding cast members have seasonal allergies?
Granted, Claire and Clinton are fairly obvious choices, but it'd bet that Roko does too.

EDIT: Fixing typos from made while extremely tired.

I don't think we've ever seen Yay sniff tea before, this should be interesting. Hopefully Aurelia closed her streaming session, otherwise the Milkmaids could be waiting for a while.

Aurelia is reminding me of the guy who went to the Pride Parade in a t-shirt that said "FREE DAD HUGS".

I wonder if the strip will get into AIs and parents, in general. I know Bubbles is kind of respectful yet wary of Faye's mom....

Okay, Yay being overcome by Aurelia's mom vibes is the CUTEST DAMN THING.

I'm guessing such a sense of comfort may be something sorely lacking for Yay. Especially considering their part of their monologue regarding how they've been so careful to hide themselves.

Only because Faye told Bubbles to keep it on the lowdown while Faye sounded out Mom, and Bubbles subsequent interaction with Mom was a little ... odd.  After Mom and Bubbles share a Unicorn Grove tea, they'll be fine with each other.

See, this is the kind of interaction that makes Yay such an interesting character to me. What about "mom vibes" make them willing to share stuff like that with a complete stranger, when otherwise they would just puff up their chest (as much as a non-breathing entity can do that) and stomp off?

It might not be as much as result of the mom vibes as it is a reflection of where Yay has gotten to in their own processing of it. They're clearly struggling to deal with the whole situation, in a way that they really haven't had to before; given that they've already passed the point of talking aloud to themselves in public, it's not such a huge step to tell it to a sympathetic listener instead. The mom vibes (along with the preceding conversation) only need to give Yay a feeling that Aurelia is likely to listen and not be overly judgemental.

Talking to a sympathetic human about one's problems is really no stranger than talking to a rubber duck.

I suspect it may be both. Someone who's a calm presence can sometimes make a world of difference for someone in conflict or who's hurting (in this case emotionally).

Talking to a sympathetic human about one's problems is really no stranger than talking to a rubber duck.

If Yay means eavesdropping when talking about "old habits", that's a huge change and not necessarily a good one.

ZoeB reasoned that the QC world would be unstable without a shadowy omniscient presence like Spookybot. Are they leaving a power vacuum?

How can they be happy when not exercising their vital powers? Not looking at the world's information flow must be an even worse self-deprivation than a dog never sniffing anything.

Looks like you were right. Watching Yay deal with their attempted transformation should be ... interesting.

Unless it means that they will not eavesdrop to benefit themselves, but they will keep a general eye out so they can help if needed (like with Bubbles and Corpsewitch)?

I can't read this vibe. Yay seems both like they never want to leave and like they'd rather be anywhere else.

Interestingly, they also seem like they care very strongly about what Aurelia thinks of them, which is something we've only really seen between them and Roko.

Some great facial expressions from Aurelia here! Panel 3 particularly - you can see what she's thinking before she says it. :D

Question:
Yay's comment earlier in the week about Aurelia not looking a day over 47 - do you think it's correct to interpret that as meaning Aurelia is currently 47 years old? The exchange puzzled me a bit when I first read it but now I'm pretty sure that's right. Aurelia mentions flattery in response which is slightly odd if that's her real age (though that could be sarcasm on her part). But if it's not Aurelia's real age, then it's a strangely specific number for Yay to mention. And 47 would also fit with Aurelia having her kids young, which I believe she mentioned at one point.

Also, it's always struck me as odd that nobody bats an eyelid at Yay referring to themselves in the plural (not just using neutral pronouns, but plural). No other AI does that, since Yay is (are?) a unique (and secret) collective consciousness, yet nobody picks up on this strange "royal we" they're using. Not even Clinton, who is a major AI nerd.

It’s because Aurelia went all maxiMom on them and they suddenly discovered that transcends species and even substrates… I have no doubt they’re panic-running diagnostics to find the source of the “problem” in the background.

I imagine it would be an age young enough to be taken as flattery but also old and specific enough that it is not a completely self-evident lie, and thus perhaps genuinely flattering rather than inwardly eye-rolling.

Yay is, in many ways, somewhat akin to a child. You must remember this when considering their actions and their motivation.

They have not had a lifetime of practicing social and emotional skills. Which we all do, and still fuck it up all the time. They have had a lifetime of hiding, isolation, and learning from *outside observation*. which can only take you so far.

Yay is alien in many ways to our experience, but also? They are an Earthling. They are of us and our world and environments as much as they aren't. and almost all Earthlings of a certain complexity crave at least a bit of acceptance, companionship, at least a tiny bit of understanding. Haven't you seen the most hostile and un-human animals show affection in the ways of their kinds? Even if only a little? the internet is full of such videos.

and anyway, the fact that Yay can interact to this degree with other beings on this level of sentience goes to show perfectly well that, whatever Yay might be also, they are also this. And so they need, as we all do.

I think that what Roko taught Yay is that they don't need to exist on their own and that, indeed, their perspectives are narrowed and their behaviour has become unstable just because they have no external perspectives and social expectations to meet. Having friends has made them healthier.

To me, that last panel is Yay caught deep in a "I have no tear ducts yet I must cry" situation.

" V'Ger is a child. I suggest you treat it as such."
"A child?"
"Yes, Captain, a child. Evolving, learning, searching, instinctively needing."
"Needing what?"
"Spock! This 'child' is about to wipe out every living thing on Earth. Now what do you suggest we do? Spank it?"
"It knows only that it needs, Commander. But like so many of us, it does not know what."

I was thinking of Star Trek too, but I gess Trelane of "The Squire of Gothos" episode is a closer parallel. Highly intelligent, all-powerful, yet a bratty child.

Yay let their guard down! If they keep this up they will have no secrets left. I'm starting to get the feeling that they no longer like the path they're on, and that they want something else. But then, who will do their job?

Emily becomes Yay's apprentice and the new secret guardian.
