I only left off one. It starts with an "h".
QC already has elements of seinen, josei, and slice of life but I was wondering what sorts of other anime genre it might be interesting to drop these characters into. Feel free to include any specific subgenres when picking. I included examples of each to help those unfamiliar with all of the genres and definitely didn't have to look a list of genre examples[1].
One of my votes is going to be 'mecha' mostly because seeing Martin respond to characters like Coconna and Vanilla from VOTOMS would be funny.
[1] I knew/knew of 26 of these, just not specific classifications for all of them
EDIT: And elements of iyashikei to a degree with both Bubbles' main storyline and Roko's body dysmorphia.
-
All of these have subgenres that correspond to the traditional Western genres of fiction.
A horror kodomomuke would be GeGeGe no Kitarō, whereas a horror seinen would be Elfen Lied[1] or Biomeat. Not sure if Neon Genesis Evangelion counts as horror mecha or not.
[1] This one is VERY MUCH upsetting to watch, and it's not just the graphic violence.
-
Hey, I have a badge that says 'I love anal' on it!
-
Well, that's interesting nightshirts...
I'm still hoping Yay turns up.
-
In which category of anime is Grendizer?
-
Beeps is just so oblivious. It might be she never read what's written on those pajamas...
-
"Other" because I really couldn't tell you what any of these are.
I only saw occasional bits of Sailor Moon and Dragon ball Z in passing because my kids were watching them.
I only saw a few scenes from Ghost In The Shell as an animation example during an Animation/Graphics class.
That's pretty much the extent of my knowledge on the subject.
...And Beeps seems kind of casual about her choice of "sentiments" expressed on her night attire! Has working in a sex toy factory completely burned out her capacity to be surprised by human sexual foibles? :-D
-
If you focus on Elliot/Clinton you could do Yaoi.
About today's comic. I really love Roko's face in panel 5.
-
In which category of anime is Grendizer?
Mecha.
-
....kind of casual about her choice of "sentiments" expressed on her night attire!
With no excretory or other biological functions connected with orifices at the base of the torso - if indeed there are any, and from an engineering point of view its not a smart idea to have them there - the associations for AIs ought to be utterly different from human.

... What they said. I'm not into manga at all :)

In which category of anime is Grendizer?
Looking up images of it, I'm going to go with 'mecha'. Some of the anime genres overlap with eachother (especially mecha). Escaflowne is another mecha anime that fits into other genres (isekai, shoujo).
Is that the same artist as Mazinger Z?
EDIT: typo correction plus another example of genre mashup.
EDIT 2: Ah, right. Sarcasm.
[Was legitimately too tired to process the concept.]

New comic.
I never thought to see Melon with a crank in her head, but there you go.
Did a quick check to see which PJs Roko is wearing - she went for the pink version. The text is in mirror image on panel 3.
Is that a picture of Beeps with her creche mates in the background?
-
I have no idea about manga or anime (except for Princess Mononoke and Akira and Serial Experiments Laine) but is this "I love Java" that says on Roko's shirt?!
-

In all the panels where it's visible. I'm pretty sure this means Roko put it on inside out to try to cover up the message. [Edit: I actually just noticed that you can also see the tag sticking out the back in panel 2. So yes, she's wearing it inside out.]
Is that a picture of Beeps with her creche mates in the background?
Appears to be - it's titled Creche 2021472 <something> with "Hello!" written underneath. Probably a creche graduation picture.
I have no idea about manga or anime but is this "I love Java" that says on Roko's shirt?!
Noooo. Have a look at the last panel of the previous comic. As noted above, she's wearing it inside out.
-
I hadn't notiteced this, but that's what makes it evil, then. Turn something nice into something evil inadvertently.
-
Ah, inside out! That makes sense. Good job on spotting the little tag :)
-

The first two are seinen, and I think Serial Experiments Laine is too (I still need to watch it).
EDIT: combined a double-post
If you focus on Elliot/Clinton you could do Yaoi.
About today's comic. I really love Roko's face in panel 5.
..... I specifically left hentai off the list, but I'm guessing you mean for ecchi?
-
The last panel of today reminds me of me in high school. I often had a variety of odd items in my possession, and whenever one would prove of use and I took it out, someone would say something along the lines of, "Why do you have that with you?" To which I would reply, "In case of this exact situation."
-
Anyone else imagining a music box rendition of Pop Goes the Weasel playing as Beeps turns the crank in Melon's head, or am I just super tired?
-
No, but now I'm imagining a Jack-In-The-Box. Disturbing mental image!
-
No, but now I'm imagining a Jack-In-The-Box. Disturbing mental image!
Melon!Jack is vastly more erudite and coherent than big Melon, somehow, despite clearly being 100% wood and cloth.
-
Jeph is a Resident Evil 2, 4 and 6 fan confirmed. So, which of is characters is most like Ada Wong?
-
I like the inside-out t-shirt. And that Melon's ahoge is sticking straight up in panel 3. Is that something she does often?
-
Robot Sex Disco album. Heh...
-
Jeph is a Resident Evil 2, 4 and 6 fan confirmed. So, which of is characters is most like Ada Wong?
Raven
-
Did Millefeuille and Melon change before going to Beep's? They are dressed (barely) for a different style club then the classier dresses that Beep and Roko were in earlier :}
-
Melon lives in the same building, so she could change clothes very easily. I also don't really see a difference between "class" or "formality" in their outfits. Neither set of outfits would look amiss at any of the bars around here, and not everyone in a group of friends is necessarily going to go for the same look, even when heading out together.
-
Anyone else imagining a music box rendition of Pop Goes the Weasel playing as Beeps turns the crank in Melon's head, or am I just super tired?
Yes, that is the only way to imagine this. What happens when you get to the "pop"... well, it's beyond human imagination.
Also, the phrase "crunk crank" floated through my head.
Does drunk Melon start... making sense?
-
No, but now I'm imagining a Jack-In-The-Box. Disturbing mental image!
Like, the top of Melon's head popping open like a lid, and an explosion of confetti flying out? That was my first mental image.
The more Monty Pythonesque part of my mind then gave me the mental picture of Melon's head flying open and her brain flying out... an organic brain*, landing with the appropriately squelchy sound effects...
*Hey, it's my mind - it doesn't have to be logical! :-D
-
These go to eleven.
-
That's one more than 10.
-
Exactly. One louder.
-
Maximum overdrive!
-
Warp eight, Mr. Sulu.
-
Yeah, they're going to reboot in jail tomorrow morning.
-
I see one of the categories has a few more votes now.
-
In which category of anime is Grendizer?
Mecha.
The poll doesn't offer that option, sadly.
As a french who grew up in the 70's and 80's, I was a Grendizer (or "Goldorak", as it is called here) fan. It was one of the first anime to be broadcasted in France, and even now, everybody knows its name.
-
Exactly. One louder.
[/quote
For when you need that extra 10%.
-
When Melon goes to eight, she will be -less- crunked.
( melon operates on the diatonic scale )
-
It would be cool if you could just WILL yourself more drunk. Or sober.
-
I have mixed feelings about Roko getting really drunk so soon after a dissociative episode.
My experience, even getting a little drunk after a seizure or a migraine could screw me up for days. But Roko is in a very different situation and getting drunk might act like a reset and help her integrate better.
-
One of the nearly universal tenets of scifi is that social sentient creatures, without exception, enjoy altering their state of consciousness while socializing. Whether that's ethanol, cyanide, electric current, the DrinkR app, or blue light, the means matter far less than the ends, as long as you take reasonable care not to injure, consume, or traumatize other beings. (See The Draco Tavern stories by Larry Niven (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Draco_Tavern))
Nice to see how it plays out with AIs here!
Anyway. Can we talk about robot toes?
Roko went from no toes to one big toe plus a uni-toe (uni-quad-toe?) in her new body. Beeps and May 2.0 have five toes. Melon and Bubbles don't have toes. I'm not going to trawl the toe status of the other AIs with humanoid bodies like some weirdo, but suffice to say that there is a lot of toe variation.
This amuses me greatly for some reason.
In humans, the big toe is an especially important stabilizer (not to mention it's necessary for some sandals). And thus it makes sense that many AIs in humanoid bodies would have a similar mechanism, at least some sort of articulated uni-toe. And with, uh, foot-shaped feet, they have their choice of human shoes.
I love that Jeph has thought through the toe question for each character, and many other almost or entirely unnoticed character design details besides.
-
IIRC, even within a visible robot uni-toe, there were other multiple sets of skeletal material underneath, as if their feet were webbed to the point where it just looked like one giant toe.
-
Can any of you imagine how would it be like if Bubbles used the "drunk" software?
-
If I found the right math e! is only about 4.26? So Melon is practicing moderation - most unusual!
-

Well, of course, Melon gets less scatterbrained the higher she sends her drunk setting, can't have that.
-

Right, that's kinda what Roko 1.0's foot looked like when they removed it to fix the ankle joint.
To walk like a human and wear human shoes, you'd need articulated toes or a toe-like structure of some sort.
Bubbles seems to have the flexible uni-toe. She also seems to have some sort of dark red "slipper" or foot covering. Or maybe that's just a durable part of her actual foot. In any case, Bubbles seems to be the only humanoid AI who doesn't wear human shoes.
Bubbles' feetses:
https://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=3792
Millie usually wears shoes, but has a split toe sort of thing happening.
https://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=4084
OK, that's probably enough robotoetalk...
-
If I found the right math e! is only about 4.26? So Melon is practicing moderation - most unusual!
Euler's Constant is approx. 2.71828... If we ignore (for convenience) the fact that e is not actually an integer, then e! (e factorial) would be 1 x 2 x 2.71828, or 5.43656.
Thing is, even at 5.4, Melon will be beyond the point of performing even simple math, so how will she know when she gets there?
-

The extension of the factorial function to real numbers is the Gamma function, specifically e! = Γ(e+1) =~ 4.26.

Not music box. But midi/8-bit.

....Going to go out on a limb and guess someone showed Jeph fanart. Either that or he knows the internet too well.

Mecha should be the 6th option from the bottom. The examples given were Gundam, PATLABOR, and Armored Trooper VOTOMS. I'll have to check that series out
-
I'm amused that everyone has apparently concluded that Melon meant "e factorial" and not "e, but with gusto".
-
Can any of you imagine how would it be like if Bubbles used the "drunk" software?
Either quiet introspection, or sad crying? Might just get a bit silly.
-

I note that in the first panel, Melon's crunkles are angular, rather than rounded like the others. Only in the first panel. So she's less crunked now.
-
Comic's up.
Ugh, I'd hate it if someone started streaming me without permissions, especially if I was under the influence :(
-
And you know there are people out there who would just get more into Roko scolding them, which just make the sudden streaming worse. Realistic, but uncomfortable.
-

I hope so - I'd be a little worried that she might turn out to be an angry drunk - I mean, she has good reasons to be angry...
-
Why do people feel (and indulge) the urge to livestream private events (like a friend gathering) on public platforms? That will forever be beyond me.
-
Why do people feel (and indulge) the urge to livestream private events (like a friend gathering) on public platforms?
Because, on a conscious or unconscious level, they want to have everyone looking at them, talking about them and thinking about them. It's quite a remarkable level of narcissism when you think about it and it suggests that the modern on-line media culture has induced this condition in a vast range of people with a vast range of underlying psychological backgrounds.
As I heard one person say: "Once I'm famous, everything will be okay!"
-
Why do people feel (and indulge) the urge to livestream private events (like a friend gathering) on public platforms? That will forever be beyond me.
I mean, it's not my instinct, but if I did, it would be the same reason I'm taking pictures to post later; I'm having fun and I want my friends and family to see what I'm doing. There's of course the consequence that other people will see it, but I mean, that's up to them to actually tune in, right? You may ask, "why would you want to live stream private events on public forums", but idk, I ask, "why do you want to watch strangers party"? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
-
Some people show you they're dicks by showing you their dicks.
-
I'm wondering why Roko is so hostile to anyone watching? Or is this a leftover from her police days when anyone watching was automatically assumed guilty by the police? Or is she just upset at Millie and venting on the supposed audience? Any way you slice it, Roko appears to have some lurking anger issues.
-
Some people show you they're dicks by showing you their dicks.
Roko's reaction makes me wonder. I'm not sure I want to hear this story.
( unsolicited dick pics )
-
Granted, I've posted this before, but it was some time ago. I once had a friend in need of a good laugh, so I sent her pictures of Dick van Dyke, Dick Tracy, Dick Cheney and Dick Turpin, and then promptly apologised for the "dick pics". At least I knew my audience well enough. The closest thing to pictures of genitals I've ever sent would be ones of flowers. Now why people want to cut the naughty bits off of plants and give them as a romantic gesture is beyond me.
-
Some people show you they're dicks by showing you their dicks.
Honey consider this stolen
-
I'm wondering why Roko is so hostile to anyone watching?
I do not like being photographed. Even by a friend, someone streaming, without an understood plan of events and consent, would get their camera removed. If their target is elsewhere and I am "just" a bystander, remove myself from their view. If followed, might become an altercation of self-defense against assault.
-
I'm extremely camera-shy, even though when I was an art student, I primarily did photography. It was rather funny that one professor took polaroids of the class in order to try to learn everyone's name. Thankfully, my hair was long enough to do the cousin Itt thing every time he had a camera pointing anywhere near my direction.
-
So for Melon, it's turtles? A search for 'lolturtles' actually returns hits.
( am interested in melons philosophical reasons )
-
Every time I see Melon, I fall more in love with her.
-
I'm a little unclear on the extent to which we're supposed to read Roko's grumping as a fourth-wall-breaking admonition to us readers (vs. the obvious in-universe admonition to whoever's watching the stream). The former feels a little...unfair?
Like, the last seven comics have featured:
- Beeps in her underwear putting on a slinky dress
- Roko monologuing about how inappropriately short her dress is
- Roko, in said short dress, making a "is that a baguette in your pants" joke
- Beeps, after Roko's dissociative episode, offering her a choice between "I <3 Anal" and "Pound My Holes" pajama shirts
- Millefeuille bragging about her fat ass and putting on "Robot Sex Disco" as party music
- Millefeuille getting drunk and removing her top
- Roko yelling at people watching them for having their dicks out
I don't wanna say that Jeph has definitely had his dick out for the last week, but it does feel a little questionable to be admonished by the authorial voice after he decided to go this hard on Sexy Robot Week. But maybe I'm reading too much into this, and he's really just telling a story about Roko being grumpy, not chiding his readers for finding Sexy Robot Week sexy.
-
Apparently, mistakes were made.
-
I'm guessing that Roko went on a blistering rant about those **********ing ****ers at Valley Semiconductor (and possibly a few other *********s she's had to deal with lately).
-
Or maybe ranting about the faulty AI prison system, and the lack of support for AIs like May.
-
Apparently, mistakes were made.
Seems that way.

I'm surprised that Melon didn't try a Slinky dress
As far as the comic itself goes, Jeph does enjoy trolling his readers at times, and at least what I got from it is how things can and will go horribly wrong.
-
I see that exactly the kind of shenanigans you can expect from a situation where someone encourages you to get drunker than you typically would have, in fact, occurred. Never a good sign when someone asks you what you remember from last night.
Also, deeply entertained at the idea of drunken robot amnesia. Like, is part of the protocol that memory banks just stop recording or are they archived and you need to sudo in somehow
-
Did the last evening's events involve any rabbits? Or combine-harvester? Or carrot bread?
-
Like, is part of the protocol that memory banks just stop recording or are they archived and you need to sudo in somehow
Maybe their memories get stored in the RAM, and when drunk, they dont get transfered to ROM. Depends on how many processes they can kepp running alongside the booze software.
-

Are you saying you feel the Content is Questionable?
(sorry, couldn't resist)
-
Thinking more about how everything went down, it does make quite a bit of sense. The whole "girls' night out" thing is supposed to be an emotional boost. Beeps wanted them to be able to be their hottest, consume some questionable data (booze), and, for a few brief hours, be (along with Roko and the others) be unstoppable forces. But, particularly with *that* dress, the thought of getting tarted up a little was a major trigger for Roko's dysphoria. No matter how "hot" she looks to others, any attention to her looks, even her own just makes her more of aware of what she normally suppresses.
-
Did the last evening's events involve any rabbits? Or combine-harvester? Or carrot bread?
Carrot Bread. But for some reason it was with Emus? Could have been worse, only a couple of them had the invisibility add-on :}
-
Try to be more charitable, folks, Remember Jeph is a Butts Disease sufferer in recovery.
-
One cheek is one too many; two is not enough.
-
Beeps: I mean, what with Mille being topless again...and what Melon was doing...I'm sure - pretty sure - that no-one even noticed what you were doing at all...
Roko: That is even less good news, Beepatrice
-
This may have been covered already, but does Mille also have a screen face like Beeps'?
-
If I found the right math e! is only about 4.26? So Melon is practicing moderation - most unusual!
But e, the base of natural logarithms is never capitalised.
Whereas E, the last-but-one digit in base 16, (perhaps especially relevant to an AI .. do AIs have binary brains ? IDK) is quite often capitalised.

wwooooo, and 14! is 87,178,291,200? that would be very drunk!!! A mere organic would have been dead long before reaching such heights :{
-
And as Melon starting melting trying to go to 11, it seems the hex interpretation is wrong...

Maybe they could get a witch to come down from Amhurst and remove that hex?
-
This may have been covered already, but does Mille also have a screen face like Beeps'?
Since she's sans nose, apparently yes.
Beepatrice's choice of sleepwear cements in my mind that Beeps was built as a sex droid, found defective, and is now working in the factory to pay off her indenture. Or else she is completely and utterly clueless about how organics handle the whole sex thing. Or both. Sigh.
Millie popping her top off was a surprise. I wonder what that portends.
And great, now Melon is going to be dysphoric too? Can the negaverse cope? Or are we going to see more of Lemon?
-
Millie popping her top off was a surprise. I wonder what that portends.
We've seen before that she has an exhibitionistic streak, and likes to turn Drinkr up pretty high. So this wasn't surprising for me.
-
And why does Melon have different colored eyes now? Is that all UR had in stock?
-
Just to illustrate the level of fame of Grendizer TODAY in France: some metal-working business put a giant Grendizer on roundabout in 2018 (so 40 years after the show first aired in France) somewhere in the middle of Auvergne, and it made the tv news on the main french tv channel, TF1. Just saw that now.
