I'm confused: Twitter was initially conceived as a thing for people who have not access to the Internet on their phones by SMS on the Internet -- kind of like WAP. It's apparently a different thing now (I mean I knew but seriously)? I know its user base changed throughout the years, but that much?

This is in the wrong place as far as I can tell.

Long story short, part of said changes happened when Yahoo! bought tumblr, banned 'female presenting nipples' (a.k.a. "the tumblr titty ban"). Which, in turn prompted many of the artists on tumblr as well as the most annoying users who'd given it such a bad rap to migrate to twitter. The latter group forming up the so-called "twitter mobs".

@Gyrre : "part of said changes happened when Yahoo! bought tumblr" oh, I can see that.

I have a 50 inch monitor that I have to stand half a meter from because I don't have a wireless keyboard or mouse. It's extremely disconcerting.
edit: thankfully for only this evening.

Yahoo is the "reverse Midas" of the information industry; it touches gold and turns it into dross.

Aah, yes. The Mierdas[1] touch.
[1] "Mierda" is Spanish for "shit"

I'm going to wait and see, but I'm going to wait outside and I'm not optimistic. The toxicity level was already pushing my limits.
It's confusing to compare the erratic impulsiveness of the Twitter takeover with the cunning and focus of Tesla and try to understand how they could come from the same man.
Advertisers are getting advice from their advertising firms to stay away at least for the time being, and GM and Volkswagen have raised the question of how safe their ads would be on a platform run by a competitor.
I'm going to miss Michael McFaul though.
Oh, reportedly massive layoffs in engineering too.

Any betting pools on how long it'll be until it tanks?

Fine, I'm going to stick my neck out here.
Ultimately, I think it will be too big to fail.

That's one of the guesses I've seen put forward; set up a president for rent social media site to be bailed now. That way the Titans can remain entrenched and never fall.
Another potential motive for crashing Twitter intentionally would be to kill it as a new source oddly enough. Just look at how much was prevented in terms of --frankly-- unwarranted US "interventions'" (invasions) thanks to whatever BS was getting propped up for backing it being quickly debunked.

I don't think so. There have been other social media sites that have come, and gone. Myspace anyone? Ultimately, advertisers will want nothing to do with their ad being put next to a post by an overt Nazi. Therefore revenue will fail. The only hope it has is Musk will keep selling Tesla stock (another $3.6 billion this week). The only thing it will be good for is Nazi organizing though.

Which will be a sad loss. It was weirdly good for disseminating precient timely news like the Australian bush fires, the Fukashima disaster, and so many major storms.

Sure, we all remember Myspace, the canonical example given of a fallen social media giant. I'm not betting any money either way, and I won't cry if it fails. That's just my guess. Still a lot of people there with a lot of skin in the game.

Elon has started banning journalists. Here's (https://twitter.com/Azi/status/1603553903529938944) a full list so far. Surprise surprise it's mostly folks that have spoken out against him
