'Boing-oing'.

I imagine that that made much the same sound as the Gossip Stones in Skyward Sword.

It's too long; I'm thinking it'll only be a short while before it gets cut.  Or Melon will drop out of the storyline for a while and then show up with cropped hair again.

Some people both here and elsewhere have complained that nothing was resolved, that Faye and Bubbles learned nothing from this incident, etc.  I don't think it's quite that bad.  Faye's apology was far from generic--she acknowledged what she had done wrong, and--I think this line is important--said "I know you're just tryin' to make sure we do good work" without another character having to tell her that.

Faye is, in many ways, a bit of a flake.  But the same can be said of a lot of people.  Who knows if their relationship will withstand the test of time?  Most don't.

Also someone asked if Faye was in AA.  She attended a support group ("No Creeps.  We have a separate group for creeps.") where people were telling their stories.  She got a sort of "I'm not alone" half smile on her face.  She has since made references to stuff she has been told like "it's like a muscle" which to me implies that she went back at some point, just not on-screen.  Now, was this AA?  Northampton being Northampton, I would not be surprised if it was some sort of alternative to AA where you don't have to believe in god, they don't care if you smoke pot instead of drinking, etc.  I have never been involved in AA, but some people who have complain that it is a bit like a cult, and have tried to develop alternatives.

Hello, new character in the form of Professor Becky Bennett, the Canadian (and thus nice) mother of Emmett. I wonder what she's got a professorship in? It could be anything but one wonders if it is child development and thus we'll get a case of "unconsciously testing her theories out on her kids" scenario.

Meanwhile, Emmett is going to have to  get used to Sam 'dropping in' whenever she feels like it, just like Faye and Bubbles have.

Also, I suspect that Emmett hates that cereal but they're going to pretend that they love it to impress Sam. Because impressing Sam is important for some reason.

There are several corn-based breakfast cereals that have 'puffs' in their brand name; basically they're popped corn kernal-based.

To be fair to Emmett, the only healthy cold cereal I cared for as a kid was oats. Honey O's and frosted miniature wheats tended to have quite a fair bit of sugar on top of the otherwise relatively healthy cereal base.

Why do people play games with their kids' names like this anyway? I knew a couple who named their kids Nadia and Aidan. If they'd had another girl, they were going to name her Diana...

I knew a couple who had named their son Rowan.  Which I thought was a girl's name for some reason, but whatever.

Later, they were expecting another kid and tests showed it would also be a boy, and they were discussing possible names.  I feigned surprise and said, "You mean, you're not going to name him--" and the father angrily finished the sentence for me, "NO WE ARE NOT GOING TO NAME OUR SONS ROWAN AND MARTIN!"

(If you don't get that joke, congratulations you're not an old fart.)

It is a shame that Quaker Oat Squares (or its generic knock-offs) are not available unsweetened, or artificially sweetened.

Also a shame that cereals that are fundamentally based on sweetness, like Peanut Butter Crunch, are not made in an artificially sweetened version.  We might have fewer diabetics if artificial sweeteners could become the default.

Considering Emmett's an enby, it's quite possible that this isn't the name that their parents chose.

It wouldn't exactly be universally great if artificial sweeteners became the default...

Oh, don't be like that. Mehmet Oz does have a medical doctorate. He uses it for evil, but he DID earn one.

As for Emmet's name... Is is possible that their last name isn't the same as Becky's?

Also: Given this conversation (https://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=4712), I suspect that even IF Sam's dad felt that Emmett was a bad influence, Becky here would ask that he allow it, since Sam is a Good Influence on Emmett.

It wouldn't exactly be universally great if artificial sweeteners became the default...

Perhaps, but having HFCS as the fundamental basis of American food is provably not universally great.  And no I am not ragging on HFCS specifically, it's just the form of sugar that is subsidized to the point of being cheaper than any other ingredient you can put in food.  If we replaced all the HFCS with "all natural unprocessed organically grown cane juice" and still sweetened the $#|+ out of everything, it would be equally bad.

I posit that lots and lots of sucrose is worse for people than the tiny amount of sucralose that could replace it.  (Or one of the older sweeteners that were banned for bogus reasons.)   Prove me wrong.

I'm not proposing abolishing sugar entirely.  It's just that instead of having a tiny diabetic section with a lousy selection of unsugared foods (which the supermarkets in my area got rid of anyway), we could remove sugar from the foods that kids grow up eating and have a tiny "want to become diabetic" section with breakfast cereals that are mostly sugar, canned soups that are mostly HFCS, etc. for those determined to pursue that lifestyle.

BTW, I have actually seen food labeled as "contains no sugar" that was sweetened with "all natural unprocessed organically grown cane juice" instead.  In a so called "health" food store.  If we had any real health food stores--as in "I have a list from my doctor..."--they would sell sugar free alternatives to the sugared foods in the regular food stores.

Maybe he doesn't want to buy it for reasons unrelated to nutrition -- e.g. only one store in the area carries that brand and it's out of his way, or there's a similar kind of cereal at a much lower price, or he dislikes something about the company and doesn't want to buy their products....

1) HFC is cheaper

The first time we saw Cosette is when she asked Marten out (https://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=1322) and it led to a big fight between him and Dora. Also, I believe she is now part of the roughly 98% of the population of Northampton who works at Coffee of Doom.

That's why I hardly ever got to have Grape Nuts as a kid. They have no sugar and only four ingredients, but Post does not charge per ingredient. I don't even get to have them now because of a) shortages, currently, and b) adult me not being able to swing that price tag for a smaller than average box of cereal either.

And btw, if you think that eating Grape Nuts is basically like chewing gravel, you need to either heat it in the microwave for a minute or let them sit for something like 5-10. They soften up and their actual flavor comes out. I wouldn't like them either if I'd just poured some milk on them and crunched away.

--

Flondrix, I also super disapprove of the way HFCS is shoved into everything, for both public health reasons and because of how busted the whole system is with the corn subsidies that are the actual reason the stuff is in everything. I don't, however, think that bringing a generation of children up on artificial sweeteners would turn out well. Gyrre has mentioned just one big concern, and there are others. Also, sugar in general isn't the devil if you're not practically mainlining it like our nation is because of the bullshit corn subsidies. Anyway, there's no need for this "prove me wrong" business. I'm just a random person on the internet who is in favor of moderation and fixing a badly run system rather than stocking the shelves like humans are all ticking time bombs of Type 2 diabetes.

Or because it's Healthy (tm) it costs like four dollars more per box, and he thinks that's a scam and refuses to pay it even though there isn't a lower-priced similar product to buy instead.

That's when you just mix your own müsli. For supposed to be healthy, most mixes here contain between 10% and 22% sugar, so i ended up getting cereal flakes of my liking, crunched nuts, dried fruits and some kernels to mix, and it's both cheaper and tastes better than ready made müsli.

Milk contains about 5% lactose, and dried fruits contain a lot of sugar, for example dried banana has 23%. The rest, not so much.

So I would guess abour 3% total ? Assuming about half of the meal is the milk, absorbed in the grain, and the dried fruits are only a relatively small part.

Much less if you're lactose intolerant, because then your body doesnt converts it to glucose like any other digestable carbo hydrate. Instead bacteria in your stomach process it, leading to the known consequences (that this webcomic likes to exaggerate).

I'd say between 5 and 10%, depending on the dried fruits i have at hand.

Well, this is a weird inversion. Instead of Steve eating cereal, we've had two days of other characters eating cereal and planting the seeds of an actual narrative plot and then cutting away to Marigold eating pizza for what feels like a one-off joke.

*Sigh* I was just getting invested in the whole thing with Sam, Emmett and Professor Becky too!

The URL-only thing may be annoying at times, but it does make sense.  Granted, server storage is cheap these days, but I could see potential liability issues with directly hosting images/clips, and not wanting to even deal with those.  I do wish that more webcomics would do like xkcd does and provide specific links for embedding.

I'm watching those right now.  Currently on season 6.

Going by some of the low viscosity BBQ and uncooked BBQ batch samples at work combined with highly caffeinated low sleep days, probably like someone dunked a cheap American school lunch sloppy joe in your latte and left it their for a bit.

To be clear, they’re not related to this fandom either. I feel like QC is generally pretty clear, narratively speaking, and there’s not enough lore to lead to wild speculation for me. The characters are really self reflective in a pretty rewarding way, so I generally don’t theorize about them

But I do.  For example, why is it that Bubbles and Drunk Dora have the same method of cutting hair?  And we saw Bubbles using it after Drunk Dora.  Did the former learn it from the latter?

Bubbles cutting hair (https://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=3852)

(I think I would prefer to have Bubbles cut my hair.)
